Book Description

After thirty years together, Cokie and Steve Roberts know something about marriage and after thirty distinguished years in journalism, they know how to write about it.  In From This Day Forward, Cokie and Steve weave their personal stories of matrimony into a wider reflection on the state of marriage in American today.

Here they write with the same conversational style that catapulted Cokie's We Are Our Mother's Daughters to the top of the New York Times bestseller list.  They ruminate on their early worries about their different faiths -- she's Catholic, he's Jewish -- and describe their wedding day at Cokie's childhood home.  They discuss the struggle to balance careers and parenthood, and how they compromise when they disagree.  They also tell the stories of other American marriages: that of John and Abigail Adams, and those pioneers, slaves and immigrants.  They offer stories of broken marriages as well, of contemporary families living through the "divorce revolution".  Taken together, these tales reveal the special nature of the wedding bond in America.  Wise and funny, this book is more than an endearing chronicle of a loving marriage -- it is a story of all husbands and wives, and how they support and strengthen each other.

1 out of 5 stars It takes a narcissist.......2004-05-04

It takes a narcissist of tremendous proportions to foist this scrapbook off on an unsuspecting public. On the plus side, Cokie Roberts does more than her usual cut and paste from the work of others in From This Day Forward. When not pulling from the work of others, Cokie (and the compliant Steve) offer up tidbits that are supposed to inform the reader how s/he too can have a great marriage.
Apparently the basic rule for a successful marriage is to live in your own little world the way kooky Cokie does. I doubt she realizes how racist she comes off in parts of the book. (Yes, Cokie, condescension is a form of racism.) Or how laughable most will find her book. Reading of the great "trauma" of her life, you realize this is someone who hasn't experienced many character building moments in her life. The great "trauma"? Learning that her new employer wouldn't provide a limo and that Cokie would have to take taxis around NYC. Oh, the horror! Oh, the shame! How did Cokie ever survive?
(Had she been told to take the subway, one gets the impression Roberts would have called it quits right then.)
A vapid celebration of what appears to be a vapid marriage isn't necessarily shocking -- what's shocking is that Cokie (and husband Steve) put their names to it. Had a child offered this slight volume as a souvenir to a wedding anniversary, we all would have "oooh"ed and "aaaawe"d over it. But for grownups to write such a book about themselves is the height of narcissism.
The book works best as anthropological study of When Gigantic Egos Mate.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read.......2003-11-01

I always loved Cokie Roberts on TV and when I saw this book, I figured it would be fun to read about her marriage to Steve Roberts. I recommend this book highly to everyone thinking of marriage especially.

From the beginning I was drawn into this couple's world and liked the way they each expressed themselves in separate chapters. I found the entire book exciting, informative, inspiring, and so thankful that they took time to write about their unique marriage and how they make it work.

This is a refreshing book. A rare book about how a marriage can work. I've been married for fifty years and I know this couple will celebrate gold as well. Lots of love and best wishes to Cokie and Steve and thanks for sharing your busy happy loving life with us.

You'll be glad you read this book too.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, light, cheery..........2001-09-26

I picked up this book for $5 at Borders, mainly because I enjoy listening to Cokie Roberts on NPR. I was curious to get to know her a little better.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. She and Steve take turns writing, as if they're dialoguing back and forth. I appreciated their commitment to their marriage in a day when it's not all that popular to stay married to the same person.

I also enjoyed the glimpses into slave marriages and Old West marriages. I'm glad I picked up this book. It was a pleasant read for sure.

1 out of 5 stars A boring book.......2001-06-05

A boring book filled with narratives, possibly copied from an encyclopedia, about historical figures. Apparently, stories from their own lives could only fill a few chapters of this book.

What a lovely gift for the bride-to-be! "Creating A Beautiful Wedding" is worth it for the photographs alone...simply breathtaking. The text is equally appealing, filled with helpful ideas. "A Private Wedding Journal" is a book to be used and cherished forever. There is ample space to record every vital stage of the engagement and wedding process, with poems and thoughts on love interspersed between the pages to be written on. Both books are encased in a keepsake box. I highly recommend this wonderful set!

1 out of 5 stars Hate to give a 1 star rating but..........2005-02-26

Well, I think I have only gave a 1 star rating 1 other time & I don't like to do it but I couldn't wait for this book to be finished. It was a chore for me just to pick up this book & keep going but I don't think I could ever not finish a book & I've always hated when people leave reviews & say that they couldn't even finish the book because who knows maybe it got a lot better at the end but that is not the case here.

This book had the least amount of dialog I've ever read in a book, which meant the majority of the book (probably 95%) was just really long, boring & winded paragraphs. Then to top that off Lori & Adam had the same thoughts over & over & over again. I'll explain.

The book starts with Lori (a poor daughter of a farmer) who has recently been raped by Eric Ross. Eric Ross is now off fighting a war & Lori finds that she is pregnant from the rape. Adam Ross (very respectable plantation owner) who is Eric's older brother is told by Lori's stepmother that she is pregnant & that he should make it right. Well, Adam proposes to Lori & she eventually accepts for her child's sake but partially because this is the man she has always loved & wanted to marry. Well, the thoughts that are repeated at almost every turn of the page is Lori thinking that Adam doesn't love her & only wed her to do right by the Ross child that she is carrying when the fact is that Adam always did have an eye for Lori & it doesn't take him long to realize that he loves her. Also, Adam doesn't believe Lori loves him even when she tells him because he thinks that she actually loves Eric. He thinks that she always wanted Eric & fell in love with him & that he tricked her into giving up her virginity to him. Adam thinks that there is no way that Lori could love him because he has a crippled leg & that she is disgusted by him but that is the farthest thing from the truth.

Neither Lori nor Adam showed much personality & I thought they were both stupid. I didn't understand why they never believed each other. I'm not kidding you the only thing the story was really about for 9/10 of the book was their thoughts of the other not loving them. It was ridiculous. I for one hated this book & would not recommend it to anybody.

            5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-04-28

I don't know if I can properly express how much I loved this book. It isn't easily defineable, just that it hooked me from the beginning and didn't let me go until the wee hours of the morning. The characters feel real, and their emotions and actions ring very true. I have never had to deal with the horror of rape, but the fear and lasting injury that it causes was described so vividly here that I agonized along with Lori. And while lesser romance authors might have had Adam believe her from the start, that wouldn't be realistic. Of course he wouldn't want to think the worst about his brother. But he supports her and helps her overcome her fears because he falls in love with her (and her baby!) despite all the obstacles in the way. Yes, he makes *big* errors in judgement, but his loyalties are understandably torn. Interesting secondary characters help highlight the complexity in the dynamics of relationships on a late-Civil War plantation. Let's just say it's not all "black and white". An intense read that held my interest to the last page. It goes on my keeper shelf.

3 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read with an important insight........2003-07-06

In 1997 when VT wrote this book, it was on the cutting edge of an important problem in society called "date rape". To write about it so poignantly and insightfully yet incorporate that within the context of the civil war era took great talent and research. The story is very good, the characters well defined, and the problems of that era very apt..I only gave this a 3 because I save 4*-5* for books I would re read..Although I am glad to have read this and it certainly held my interest I probably wouldn't read it over. The one thing that
I disliked about it was that Lori, the heroine who was raped by the hero's (Adam) vindictive/sadisitic brother(Eric)is described often as poor white trash, "beneath" the hero's sociol strata. The fact that the hero has been interested in Lori all of his life does soften the characterization somewhat. In reality, Eric would have raped any woman that his brother was interested in out of spite whether she was rich or poor so that rape had nothing to do with economic issues anyway.Ther hero was a good man, very patient and likeable...and perplexed as to how to help Lori heal from this trauma. Good job, VH. Thanks for giving us all insight into the emotions of a rape victim with the context of a love story.

            Book Description

Every aspect of the wedding ceremony, from the candles to the vows, reflects God’s incredible love relationship with His people–and His ideal design for marriage. Yet amid all the planning and preparations, we often miss the underlying meaning and beauty of the ceremony.

To help you more fully enter into the exquisite wonder of the wedding day, From This Day Forward offers a unique look at the truths symbolized by each element of the traditional marriage ceremony, including
·the lighting of the unity candle
·the entrance of the groom and his men
·the presentation of the rings and flowers
·the giving away of the bride
            ·the exchanging of vows
            ·the presence of witnesses

From This Day Forward will open your eyes to the spiritual importance of the wedding ceremony as a beautiful expression of God’s love–and of His divine design for marriage.

The wedding ceremony signifies so much more than a commitment between two individuals; it’s a living portrait of God’s love for His people. The whole drama of God’s love and plan for all of us is represented in the rites of the traditional wedding ceremony and the daily experience of marriage.

God designed marriage to reveal His love relationship with His people, His bride. When others look at an excellent marriage they see a husband gladly setting aside his own desires to care for his beloved, just as Christ abandoned His life for all of us. And they see a wife who, having taken on her husband’s name and calling, loves to please him and spend time in his presence, just as believers in Christ respond eagerly to God.

When your eyes are open to these realities, your marriage–and your relationship with God–will shine with the wonder of this divine romance.

From This Day Forward beckons you into a joyful celebration of the wedding ceremony and marriage relationship as you embark on the everyday adventure of love as God designed it to be.

            1 out of 5 stars It's Just So SACRED!!!!!.......2006-11-07

Ted & Gayle Haggard have combined to present a wonderfully campy delineation of Christian marriage in their book, FROM THIS DAY FORWARD: TURNING YOUR VOWS INTO A LIFETIME OF HYPOCRISY. As a closeted homosexual evangelical amoral self-loathing hatemonger, I give this book my highest recommendation to all Marys contemplating marriage. Limited to only 87 pages, much of it is filled with simply fabulous photos of hot horny steaming beafcake. However, I'm afraid that any readers with a brain in their head will be put off by its total overall lack of honesty, integrity, decency and compassion. That said, I would suggest, instead of putting one more dollar in Pastor Ted's pocket, trying to find a deep massage source if price is no objection.

4 out of 5 stars Understanding the Meaning of the Wedding Ceremony.......2006-08-09

Ted & Gayle Haggard have combined to present a wonderful delineation of Christian marriage in their book, FROM THIS DAY FORWARD: MAKING YOUR VOWS LAST A LIFETIME. Readers will find a profound treasure within the pages of this small book. The Haggard's combine to clearly and concisely define the rich symbolism of each aspect of the wedding ceremony as well as deftly explaining the significance of the relation of Bride and Groom to that of Christ and the Church.

As a Pastor, I give this book my highest recommendation to all marriage couples or those contemplating marriage. This diminutive book, does however, have a rub to it. Limited to only 87 pages, and much of that filled with photos, inserts and blank chapter heading pages, there is really only about 50 pages of actual text here. I'm afraid many readers will be put off by the overall lack of depth, particularly at the publisher's retail price.

That said, I would suggest trying to find a deep discount source if price is an objection, but don't let that deter you from getting your hands on this wonderful book. You'll find a clearly defined guide for the Christian roles of everyone involved in your wedding ceremony.

            Book Description

This vivid work, first published by UNC Press in 1954, reveals General Joseph Orville Shelby as one of the best Confederate cavalry leaders—and certainly the most colorful.

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, but drawn by the promise of the growing West, Shelby became one of the richest men in Missouri. Siding with the Confederacy at the outbreak of the Civil War, he organized his Iron Brigade of cavalry—whose ranks included Frank and Jesse James—taught his men a slashing frontier style of fighting, and led them on incredible raids against Federal forces in Missouri. When the Confederacy fell, Shelby refused to surrender and instead took his command to Mexico, where they fought in support of the emperor Maximilian. Upon his return to Missouri, Shelby became an immensely popular figure in the state, eventually attaining the status of folk hero, a living symbol of the Civil War in the West.

4 out of 5 stars Shelby: One fine cavalry general.......2006-03-07

Many commanders, both North and South, thought Jo Shelby to be the best cavalry general of the South. From the black plume he wore in his cap to the large sorrel horses he rode (after getting three shot from under him at Cane Hill, Arkansas, he superstitiously would only ride sorrels) to his daring tactics, Shelby struck an heroic figure. A successful businessman in Missouri before the war and a prominent slaveholder, he raised a three-regiment cavalry brigade in 1862, taught it western fighting tactics, and conducted a number of raids in Missouri and Arkansas for the rest of the war. A real thorn in the side of Union leaders, Shelby's "Iron Brigade" inflicted much damage in raids all along the western border region. Most distinguished were his operations in Sterling Price's raid into Missouri in the fall of 1864, especially at Glasgow and Sedalia (both of which he captured), Waverly, and Westport. When the war ended, he refused to surrender, and simply took his men to Mexico to fight for Maximillian. But after Maximillian was killed in 1866, Shelby returned to Missouri. His popularity only increased in the hero-hungry post-war South, which was bolstered further after he appeared as a defense witness in the trial of the James brothers, who had ridden with him during the war. He died in 1897, and his funeral was the second largest in the post-war South for a Confederate leader, after only Jeff Davis's.

O'Flaherty's approach is that of a popular, rather than an academic, historian. So much conversational dialogue is included that sometimes the book reads more like a novel than a biography. At times he over-quotes sources: for example, he includes the complete transcript of an interview that appeared in the Kansas City "Journal" with Shelby just before the James Boys trial. It's interesting, but could have been abridged. His purpose, though, seems to be to present Shelby as a hero in the Sir Walter Scott mold: brave, loyal to a cause, fair and democratic, tough on the battlefield, concerned with the welfare of his charges. In this he succeeds admirably. [This is a reprint of the original 1954 edition.]

            4 out of 5 stars Jo Shelby.......2005-08-02

I was particularly interested in reading about Confederate General Jo Shelby as my great-grandfather fought under him during the Civil War, serving in Co. A, Elliott's Battalion,
Shelby's Brigade. The book was fairly informative, but relied too heavily on the writings of Major Edwards, Shelby's Aide, who was not always objective, and given to hyperbole.
All-in-all though, it was enjoyable reading and gave me a lot of information about the man my ancestor served under.
I am in the process of visiting the battlegrounds where Shelby campaigned and this book will help in visualizing the various battles.

            5 out of 5 stars A very fine read.......2003-04-09

Gen. Shelby did remarkable things with his small command. His genius was unappreciated due to Jefferson Davis' myopic pre-occupation with west point pedigrees instead of ability and results. A Southerner can only sigh at the lost opportunity, if Shelby had been given command of command of the Army of the Trans-Mississippi instead of Theophilus Holmes.
This is a very readable volume about the greatest Confederate cavalryman in the war who led several different lives. About a half of it covers the war, another 1/4th the Mexico adventure, and the remaining 1/4 are split between his growing up and the post-Mexico (1868-97)years.
It features vivid descriptions of many battles in MO and AR, as well as the tale of his expedition to Mexico after the war. The details of his tactics at the Battle of Cane Hill, which he used repeatedly after that is fascinating. The author's style is a bit colorful and folksy, sorta like you're there talking to him. If you demand that your history read like a textbook that may spook you off, but if it doesn't it's a wonderful bio about a neglected figure
