Wish I'd gotten the updated version.......2007-08-07
As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me. She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health. Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training. I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard. I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply.

Please note how old this edition is (1992!) and choose the updated edition Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding: The Complete Nutrition Book for Nursing Mothers. We've learned a lot about diet, nutrients, and bfing in the last 14+ years!
Well Written!.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book. I found that it was really easy to read and it didn't take long to read the entire book. I really didn't want to "diet" while breastfeeding but was wanting information on how I should eat while breastfeeding. I found that when I started eating better by following the book's suggestions and began excercising regularly, I started losing half a pound a week. I am now proud to say that I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter.
Are you kidding me...???.......2006-10-04
This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know. I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.
Excellent Read!!.......2006-05-29
This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it. It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding.

Customer Reviews:
Simply the BEST pregnancy book!.......2002-10-24
I have bought a number of pregnancy books and looked at many more, and this one is definitely the best. I would say that if it is information you are after, don't bother buying any other book - just get this one. Like other reviewers have said, this one actually provides scientific evidence for the claims it makes, and it is well-written and easy to understand too.
Do you want to know about episiotomy (an incision made in the perineum between the vagina and the anus) and if and when it is a good thing? Here's the place to find out. And what about electronic monitoring of the fetus during labour? Sounds like a good thing, right? That's what our intuitions tell us - but what are the empirical facts about its use? This book gives you the evidence. Do you want to know exactly what is happening inside your body during conception, pregnancy, labour, delivery and breast-feeding? This book gives you the physiological details, not just vague, general descriptions.
Doctors, although well-meaning, are not necessarily being rationally guided by the scientific evidence when they perform episiotomies or c-sections and so on. So, in order to have the best chances of having the kind of birth you want, you have to find out the evidence for yourself - and this book helps you to do that. It is, of course, no replacement for a knowledgeable, helpful, sympathetic midwife or doctor (who can answer very specific questions that you have at 3am!) but it is an excellent supplement to their advice.
For Women Who Need to Know WHY.......1999-11-16
I bought this book after having read all the other more popular pregnancy books, and I found this one to be my favorite. Unlike the others, it includes lots of scientific data and discussion of various studies that answer all the "why" questions I had about pregnancy. Most books tell women to eat right, exercise, and maintain a low-stress lifestyle, but they offer little in the way of explanation of how such choices affect the baby. This book thoroughly explains it all! I'm so thrilled to have found it, I'll recommend it to any pregnant woman I know who is as frustrated as I was to have felt talked-down-to by other, more vague books.
A must-have book for every pregnant woman!.......1999-09-13
When after 6 years of trying I was finally pregnant, I remember the joy of the moment, but also the intense fear of now having to face labor and delivery. This book, like no other, "coached" me during the entire pregnancy, and helped me face labor and delivery without fear. I came to understand fully why my body was doing what it was doing, and I was able to work WITH my body instead of against it. As a result, I was able to have my son without any drugs -- natural childbirth at its best. For any skeptics out there, I always did keep my options open to make use of drugs, should I not be able to cope. No woman's childbirth experience is the same as another's, but understanding what was going on physically helped me deal with it psychologically. For the past 9 years, I have given this book to all my expecting friends. And, I just bought it again for my expecting sister-in-law!
Great book for people who have a biology/science degree.......1999-04-13
This book is extremely detailed in its presentation of material. Everything from medicines to general attitudes of doctors in this and other countries on certain subjects. This book explains c-sections in great medical detail so you have advanced knowledge of the procedure. I have not yet had a child, yet I still recommend this book to anyone who is interested in getting or is pregnant.
Quench your thirst for "prego" knowledge.......1999-03-02
This book is all about information. I never felt this book left out any facts I was looking for. It was the definitive book I got my information from (out of many, many books). It was a valuable resource for both my first AND second pregnancies. It can be a little text heavy at times, I certainly wouldn't recommend sitting down and reading it like a novel. But when taken a topic at a time, this book is one you don't want to be without during your pregnancy.

Learn the nurturing habit now.......2004-01-07
If you're not in the habit of practicing self-care, it's a habit you want to acquire right now -- while you are pregnant -- and this book will teach you exactly how to do it. I read and re-read this book countless times during my pregnancy. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Five stars!
It really is comforting.......2003-09-29
I have come back to this book time and time again during my pregnancy. It really enjoy that it offers a sense of humor and is light-hearted while it also is honest about challenges. It suggests writing assignments and self-nurturing home projects that I never was interested in doing BUT just reading about the common experiences of women was really helpful. Reading this, I never felt alone in what I was feeling.
One of her best.......2003-06-15
I have read a lot of Jennifer Louden's books, and I have to say this is one of my favorites. It speaks to exactly what a woman experiences during pregnancy. Highly recommended.
A wonderful pregnancy companion!.......2001-08-06
The Pregnant Woman's Comfort Book is one of the few pregnancy books out there that addresses the emotional tides a new mother goes through. Yes, it's vitally important to understand the biology of growing a baby, which so many books focus on, but this book has helped keep me sane, grounded, cool, and in love with my daily changing body.
Yuck! Too New Age touchy-feely........2001-07-02
I got this book as a gift -- I surely wouldn't have spent any money on it. It encourages self-absorption, which is never a good thing, and focuses on silly New Age "self-discovery" techniques. I suppose there are always going to be people who eat up this sort of thing, but I for one don't have time for such nonsense. This would be a great gift for a pregnant friend who is into cats, crystals and aromatherapy, but no-nonsense types are not going to like it.
Book Description
Motherhood is a powerful and sacred experience. It can be exciting, thrilling, frightening, exhausting and rewarding all at the same time. The Mother's Book of Well-Being begins and ends with the premise that the better you can take care of yourself during your baby's first year, the better caregiver and mother you can be. From one mother to another, Lisa Groen Braner offers 52 essays, one per week, about different ways mothers can learn to take time for themselves.
Portraying both the reality and the joys of motherhood, The Mother's Book of Well-Being offers spiritual sustenance combined with practical tips to assist new mothers in transcending common feelings of isolation, frustration and uncertainty.
From the prologue:
"As most mothers learn sooner or later, perpetual giving leaves you depleted. Recovering a sense of balance often feels impossible after the tumult of giving birth, breastfeeding and late nights. Yet it's important that we replenish the well from which we regularly dispense unconditional love. Sometimes we need to escape, have lunch with a friend or walk in the woods with our mate. We need to make time for our spouse and our friends, who give us the support and strength to care for our children as we do. Most importantly, we need to take time for our own rest and reflection. As we learn to care more deeply about ourselves, we extend ourselves more intently to our children. Motherhood is a journey into wholeness, and the way is self-care."
Customer Reviews:
Bran for the Soul.......2004-07-28
Lisa Braner provides for her readers a nourishing, cleansing and nurturing book of wisdom, broken down into manageable, bite-size pieces. Her 52 bits of sage advice take the new mother through the phases of motherhood from newborn to toddler. Even the cover evokes images of comfort: three little ducks in a sudsy bath; a baby's foot in a mother's hand; and cozy slippers resting delicately in a basket.
Braner's honest examination of motherhood left me, a two-time mother, feeling understood and, quite frankly, loved! Her thoughtful essays interweave the right amount of personal stories to give the reader the feeling that Braner has been there, too. I will never look at my "skinny jeans" in the same way; nor will I engage in negative self-talk, which so many mothers do. Her book made me want to kick back, take a guilt-free bath, and enjoy my kids as their childhoods enfold before me. Thank you, Ms. Braner, for your contribution to mothers' wellness!
Very inspirational! Perfect for new mothers!.......2003-11-20
The joy of new motherhood is often overshadowed by the need for rest, relaxation and the search for a little private time. Ah, I remember those days as though they were yesterday.
In "The Mother's Book of Well-Being," by Lisa Groen Braner, new mothers will find 52 weeks of inspirational passages, self-giving ideas and suggestions for enriching their role as a mother. Children will benefit not only from the love you give to them, but also from the love you give to yourself.
MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book - mothers will find a wealth of support and helpful suggestions on how to enrich their lives, thus enriching the lives of their children. The short passages allow just enough time for quick reads throughout the day. It's small size is perfect for carrying in your purse or a diaper bag :). New mothers, who often forget to care for themselves, will learn how to stay on the path to well-being.
Dad liked it too.......2003-03-04
I bought it for my wife who found it enjoyable and wished she had it 20 months ago (out daughters age). I am also finding it terrific reading and as a stay-at-home Dad can relate to many of the experiences and am in need of many of the remedies.
Treat yourself (or guys, treat your wives and come off looking like the caring husband you are) and read this book.
The Mother's Guide to Well-Being.......2003-01-15
Lisa Braner has written a wonderful book that touches a deep part within all of us, whether we are a new mother or a grandparent. The wisdom contained in this small book, found on almost every page, is so universal that no one can read it and not be richer for having done so.
Her words flow effortlessly, teaching all of us that the best parts of life come in those small moments we can't plan for no matter how organized we think we are. Learning to treasure the unexpected joys that our children bring reflects a larger truth that runs its course throughout our lives.
Instead of mourning the days that are gone or anticipating the days that are yet to be, Lisa Braner gently reminds us that we have to steady our focus in the here and now because that's the only time we really have. Whether those treasured moments rest in the love light of a child's eyes or in the quiet of a garden after a soaking rain, the larger truth of her message is that we must ensure our lives maintain Balance because, as she so eloquently writes, "our most treasured memories usually hang on the edge of mere moments."
A wise and insightful guide to motherhood.......2003-01-03
I came across a great quote recently: "If you don't take care of your body, where will you live?" Likewise, if a mother doesn't take care of herself, who will take care of the baby? Lisa Braner's book is wise, poignant and full of grace. Consider her our flight attendant on the turbulent ride of motherhood who tells us to put our oxygen mask on first and then put it on our child. She takes us through the first year week by week, giving us many tips on how to keep the oxygen mask on -- the importance of carving time out for our souls, our soulmates, as well as our babies. This is a great gift for the first-time mom as well as "veteran moms." There is always room for growth in the motherhood journey.

A very useful book for new parents!.......1999-11-24
This is a wonderful help for pregnant or new parents. I used it all the way through the birth and raising of my son, who is now thirteen. The book focuses on the physical side of things: illnesses and injuries. It was always reassuring to be able to look up physical problems and find a sensible and helpful answer. The Well Baby Book was my bible on physical ailments as my son grew.
