Book Description
The history of great architecture is the history of buildings that adapt creatively to light. Light possesses the power to transform an ordinary building into a majestic edifice that inspires awe. Architects rely heavily on light, looking to it as a tool that reveals form and forges the important connection between vision and construction.
Designing With Light, by award-winning architect Victoria Meyers, explores the myriad ways in which light is used in contemporary architecture, both internally and externally, to enhance the design and sense of space in a building. Vivid color photographs depict how architects employ light in buildings such as the Guggenheim Las Vegas and the National Gallery of Canada. Meyer looks at recent developments in the science of light, giving an overview of the history of light in architecture and demonstrating how the use of light in film, theater, and art has influenced light's use in architecture. Meyers goes on to discuss how light creates architectural features such as color, line, and form, and how architects strive to control light through glass, windows, skylights, and the manipulation of shadow and reflection. She clearly illustrates these cases with intriguing examples from recent buildings designed by internationally renowned architects including Zaha Hadid, Steven Holl, Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas, John Pawson and many others. Meyers' lively, informative text and hundreds of rich color photographs are sure to fascinate those interested in architecture and design.
Customer Reviews:
Good for Begginers..........2007-05-23
The book is good, not AMAZING! but it is a nice walk into the world of architectural lighting trough a group pf great projects.
Architects: good choice for ideas, if you are interested in lighting.
Lighting Designers: I won't lie to you, it is nice, but only that.
Good for Beginners...
Beautiful and Useful.......2006-09-22
Architects work with light as one of the basic components of design. Unlike the more technical and morphological aspects of building, light is very difficult to learn and understand without direct experience. Knowledge of the nature and effects of light comes by seeing examples and thinking about them. This book provides the next best thing to being there.
Discussions of light usually tend to the poles of the technical or the mystical. "Designing With Light" approaches it as a medium and discipline. The book provides wonderful examples and also begins a necessary process of categorization to help build a basic 'vocabulary' of light and its behavior. Victoria Meyers is an accomplished architect whose work exhibits a sensitive handling of her topic. I look forward to Volume Two, in which her analytic eye and mind continues the difficult project of making knowledge of this 'ineffable' subject more systematized and communicable.
Beautiful, Informative, and Inspiring !.......2006-06-13
Victoria Meyers leaves no stone unturned as she weaves through the worlds of Architecture, Art, and Science to illustrate the broad and intricate capacities of light.
If you are familiar with the work of hanrahanMeyers you will not be surprised to find the genuinely breath-taking spreads that are to be found within its covers. The pages of this book are jam-packed with beautiful imagery and words that are sure to inspire any creative mind as much as it has mine !
A Beautiful Design Book.......2006-05-16
Designing with light is a georgeous book. I love the title as well. It has amazing photos and it is stunning to look at. Every page is like a new adventure. It is one of the best design or architecture books I have ever seen. This book makes a beautiful coffee table book that you would love to share with your guests. The author shows a vast knowledge of architecture and the way that light aids in creating sophistication in design. I would highly reccommend this book for any artist's, architect's, designer's or anyone's collection for that matter. Bravo!
An Illuminating Read.......2006-05-10
I saw this book featured in the latest Newsweek special issue "The Good Life" and was intrigued to learn more about "Designing with Light" Kudos to Newsweek for discovering this beautiful and intelligent book. Architect Victoria Meyers (HanrahanMeyers Architects - hMa) has created a delicate balance, so rarely seen; educational content, and beautiful photography of ground breaking architectural work. Meyers takes the reader on a fascinating tour from the science to the history of light and as a tool by the worlds leading architects. I highly recommend this to all architecture enthusiasts, both layman and professional.

Was This Rewritten?.......2002-06-15
I purchased a new "used" book with this title, but authored by Wanda Jankowski, ISBN 0-86636-142-1, no print date but a copyright date of 1991. This book gives wonderful ideas for anyone who's just won the Lotto (with Powerball) and needs ideas for decorating and lighting their new multimillion-dollar mansion. It's utterly useless for those of us with more ordinary "how-do-I-light-the-bath" needs. I've tossed the book in the trash. Buyers beware.
Designing With Light: The Creative Touch.......2000-06-27
This is one of my favorite design books. It provides a great variety of different lighting options. Some of the pictures show the same room and how different light affects it. I recommend this to anyone interested in lighting design, or interior design.

Book Description
A diverse collection of readings on trends and issues surrounding the African American family. This book provides a combination of empirical research and scholarly essays on such diverse issues in the African American community as the Black maleÂ's role, interracial relationships, poverty, AIDS, and the health status of Black women.
Book Description
Interracialism, or marriage between members of different races, has formed, torn apart, defined and divided our nation since its earliest history. This collection explores the primary texts of interracialism as a means of addressing core issues in our racial identity. Ranging from Hannah Arendt to George Schuyler and from Pace v. Alabama to Loving v. Virginia, it provides extraordinary resources for faculty and students in English, American and Ethnic Studies as well as for general readers interested in race relations. By bringing together a selection of historically significant documents and of the best essays and scholarship on the subject of "miscegenation," interracialism demonstrates that notions of race can be fruitfully approached from the vantage point of the denial of interracialism that typically informs racial ideologies.
Customer Reviews:
Solid.......2006-12-14
This is a great compilation. It covers various aspects of the issues of "interracialism,"-- as the title indicates-- and seeks to historicize the subject in order to gain greater perspective. I appreciate that there are articles by DuBois and Carter G. Woodson next to deep literary analysis on cannonical peices.
It's deep.

Book Description
A boy discovers his sexuality in the shadow of a murder spree in Atlanta. A U.S. marine writes of his fierce, tragic love for a fellow marine. A man is forced to do a thing he dreads-play basketball-or risk losing face to the youngster for whom he is trying to provide a role model.
These and twenty-seven other illuminating essays reveal a world of double barriers and two-fold prejudices-a world of men looking for love and careers, companionship and mentors, rough trade and gentle understanding among those who alone can know what it means to be African-American and gay. Writings that range fromthe street-smart to the erudite, from the erotic to the political and the spiritual, this collection explores the vicious crosscurrents of pressures that black gay men face, and the ways they have coped with them-or failed to.
A vivid, candid and provocative portrait of a diverse community, Fighting Words is a remarkable anthology of individual journeys experienced by African-American gay men.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent story-telling and beautiful narratives.......2004-07-17
The stories told here range from that of a child experiencing his first feelings of attraction and angst to adults negotiating a world which does them no justice. Well written essays and a well varied array of perspectives make for an entertaining, stimulating and inspiring text.
I wish it could have been longer............2000-01-06
This is an excellent collection of essays by black male writers, excluding the gay part, because as mentioned time and again in many of these essays they must come to terms with their African-American heritage before they even think of coming to terms with their sexuality. I only wish that some of the essays were longer and some not edited. Essays that stood out for me were Coloring Outside the Lines, The Letter, and Dearest Brother Set. They and many others have helped me to evaluate the inner predjudice that lies within the gay community itself, a community whose so called main goal was to establish equality. Don't get me wrong, not all of these essays were like that but of those chosen for this book, essays of that matter were the ones that stood out the most.

Book Description
This is a thoughtful analysis of the ongoing interracial mixing of white and black Americans. Gardner's conclusions that America is a melting pot in which the races will be increasingly blended will not please those who wish to maintain separate race identities. The author looks at a variety of sexual relationships between the racesmaster/slave liaisons, prostitution, cohabitation and marriageall of which produce mixed race offspring, many of whom can choose to live either in white or black neighborhoods. As a counselor who has interviewed and visited many mixed-race couples, Gardner is extremely aware that many of the stereotypes of White/Black couplessuch as psychological maladjustment, or a way of climbing the social ladderare of limited accuracy, or dead wrong in most cases. Most interracial marriages are based on the same motive as same race marriageslove.

Please revise.......2004-10-18
With all due respect, I think this book is a first draft of a subject matter that could potentially provide its readers with crucial information in the struggle for equality. Further research is needed to substantiate this writer's embarrassing attempt to summarize the social, economic, psychological, sociological, and historical, status of blacks and whites. Although this book was published in 2000, reading its pages, at times, reminds me of the binary logic that has haunted the United States for centuries. After conducting 300 interviews with interracial couples, Gardner disappoints his readers by documenting, what seems to be in the end, a troubling personal fascination of interracial sex.
Perhaps the only saving grace for Pastor Gardner is that this "book" is titled an essay.
Mediocre Treatment of a Complex Subject.......2003-09-17
Another reviewer was too harsh. It is not a rehash of mandinka male seeks white female, etc or any such model. It describes real, true to life existing models and motives for Black/White sex and marriage in the U.S. Because black/white sexual models exist that you don't like, does not mean they do not exist, and that they are not commonly encountered.
The book is a decent read. If you are totally a babe in arms about the issues, this book will offer some insight. Remember it is first and foremost AN ESSAY. Yes, the Reverend has "issues" as do all authors (because authors a humans, and humans have issues). Describing himself as the product of a black/white father and a black/indian mother is one issue. The black/indian mixture is a seldom proven, much desired and often cited mixture by blacks who wish to be something else.
All in all the book sheds little light on a complex subject, but for someone who is unaware of the issues involved, I would recommend this book along with reading other more complete treatises on the subject.
Stereotypical Tripe.......2002-08-12
Purchasing this book was one of the worst consumer decisions I have ever made. The Reverend appears to have some very deep issues that he needs to address. According to him, every interracial relationship is based on some whore-mandingo psychosis. He goes out of his way to invalidate every interracial relationship by using people that seem like worn out caricatures from decades ago.
This book was so bad that I didn't want to resell it. Instead I placed it exactly where it belonged, in the trash bin.

SOUL-SEARING, ESSENTIAL WORDS FOR BROTHERS AND SISTERS............2001-07-10
This eloquent, yet hard-hitting book gives a blueprint, instructions and provocative reasoning behind why Black families are in crisis today, and most of his criticsm is leveled at the "men" in the Black community who have yet to step up to the plate and claim their rightful responsibilities in the home and in the world. In often humorous ways, Haki breaks down what the issues are, where the solutions lie and what we should demand of each other in our collective struggle (from our Black mates, children, leaders, etc.). He does all of this without being condescending or pious, but stern and loving, an accomplishment in itself, and I recommend this to any Black person commited to the struggle to make lives better for Blacks in this country as a whole, starting in their own backyards. If more Black men took these word to heart, the world would be a better place for all brothers and sisters. VITAL, CRUCIAL and NECESSARY!!!
A MUST READING.......2000-08-21
This book is a must reading for those who are serious about advancement for those of african desecnt. The author hits on several critical points, and he does an excellent job at providing solutions. THIS BOOK WILL OPEN YOUR MIND!
BLACK PEOPLE - MANDATORY READING.......2000-02-17
Understand yourself and the world around you in a way that you never had before.
ALL black people need to read this book!
You will not be able to put this down as you read about the simplest differences between you and your white equivelent. Madhabutis' almost poetic language is peaceful to read.
If you're a black person who believes that change is necessary but you don't know what to do about it, the educative source is right in front of you, it's now up to you.
THIS BOOK IS A LANDMARK IN BLACK THOUGHT!.......1998-09-29
AN EXCELLENT BOOK. I RECOMMEND ALL BLACK MEN TO READ THE THOUGHTS AND IDEAS THAT MR. MADHUBUTI HAS TO SAY IN THIS THOUGHT PROVOKING BOOK DEALING WITH THE LIFE AND STRUGGLE OF THE SO CALLED AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE. THIS BOOK WILL HELP ANY BLACK MAN SEEKING KNOWLEDGE FIND ENLIGHTENMENT.
