I have two small daughters. This book will come in handy for years to come! It deals with divorce and remarriage (which I am going through) as well as how your daughter is feeling at different ages. I suggest this book to parents with daughters of all ages. It is insightful and well written. It will become a permanent part of my library for future reference.

Book Description

Submarines had a vital, if often unheralded, role in the superpower navies during the Cold War. Their crews carried out intelligence-collection operations, sought out and stood ready to destroy opposing submarines, and, from the early 1960s, threatened missile attacks on their adversary’s homeland, providing in many respects the most survivable nuclear deterrent of the Cold War. For both East and West, the modern submarine originated in German U-boat designs obtained at the end of World War II. Although enjoying a similar technology base, by the 1990s the superpowers had created submarine fleets of radically different designs and capabilities. Written in collaboration with the former Soviet submarine design bureaus, Norman Polmar and K. J. Moore authoritatively demonstrate in this landmark study how differing submarine missions, antisubmarine priorities, levels of technical competence, and approaches to submarine design organizations and management caused the divergence.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-14

I sought a book with a serious overview of the topic of Cold War submarines, and not a book about one or another aspect of the topic. I ended up with a book that contains both an excellent overview as well as serious discussion of specific submarines, strategies, technologies and the men behind the scenes.
The story is well placed within the historical context of the political, military and economical events and processes of the Cold War. The text is well written and well structured.
Especially fascinating is the look behind the scenes of Soviet submarine design, construction and operations - those were among the best-kept secrets of the Soviet Union.
Besides dealing with "main stream" submarines, there are several interesting chapters about different experimental projects; rescue submarines and several fantasy projects, like freight vessels and aircraft carrying submarines.
Although the story is focused on the Cold War period, there is a detailed discussion of WWII technology that highly influenced Cold War designs, as well as descriptions of post Cold War vessels and fleets.
The book is well illustrated with photographs and line drawings.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-16

Not as many actual pix of subs as most books but it is very well written and also dabbles into the politics and design that went on with each new design of submarine. Nice charts and missile specs and things like that. Goes into greater detail of the US boats more than Soviet.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely The Best.......2007-02-13

I was somewhat skeptical of this book when I saw nothing but 5 star reviews from purchasers of the title. However, having read it, this is THE Cold War submarine reference. It contains insights not only into the technologies deployed, but the rational (or in some cases the Irrational) that led to the development of the mysterious technological marvels we could only speculate on during the cold war. The authors clearly show both American and Soviet perspectives on the cold war submarine development. I found the information regarding the CONFORM design on 1967 to be of particular interest. Rickover's insistence on developing the 688 class killed CONFORM. Yet CONFORM was 40 years ahead of anything available at that time. It is interesting that the 688's were far more fragile than one might imagine. Yet Rickover insisted on having his way. Where would we be had the CONFORM design gone through?? This book is absolutely the best material that I have read to date on cold war submarines.

5 out of 5 stars A very balanced overview.......2006-12-03

I knew about a Polmar from reading references in some papers, so I finally decided to give a try. I wasn't disappointed. There were lots of technical details giving an overview. Better yet, it is a balanced account - by no means are Americans portrayed as all powerful.

If there were two things it can be improved on - well, one would be the placement of the endnotes. It is a matter of taste, but considering how many there were and how interesting they were, it might have been more convenient to have put them at the bottom of the main text as footnotes for each page.

The second is that I would have killed for a chapter or two on "other than the equipment". Subs are not just their designers, their admirals and the technicals - it is also the men, their organization and their training. Polmar briefly goes over the differences, but it could have been given a full chapter or at least an Appendix if extra efficiency measures were applied to the pre-Cold War history stuff.

Now, I'm going to buy another Polmar book that would hopefully fill up the gap. Wish me luck.

5 out of 5 stars Covers Much More than the Title indicates.......2006-03-10

I thoroughly agree with Mr. Dougherty's enthusiastic reader review. The authors have put together a virtual encyclopedia on modern sub design and construction with real insight into what the subs were intended to do, and how some politicians and bureaucrats sabotaged the projects. I found particularly illuminating how each side of the Soviet-US conflict used the records and existing prototypes of Nazi Germany's U-Boat experiments. Baker's line drawings and diagrams are quite helpful in visualizing the boats, as are the ample photos of the real subs and scale models. This is a book to which I will return again and again whenever there is some news item about
undersea naval competition.

    Book Description

Although the United States Air Force was founded upon strategic bombardment theory and advocacy, the service has traditionally had tremendous difficulty in obtaining the adequate funding for bombers that it requires to fulfill its mandate. For more than 45 years, senior Air Force leaders, both military and civilian, have struggled to convince decision-makers in the White House and in Congress that modern manned bomber forces were needed, acceptable, and affordable. In this study, Donnini produces one of the most exhaustive analyses ever undertaken of Congressional subcommittee decision-making in the funding of defense procurement initiatives. He concludes that no program achieved measurable success of deployment with the original force structure requested; and only two, the B-1B and B-2A, received approval to acquire lesser numbers of aircraft for operational use. Donnini found that an important part of each new bomber program appeared to be funding support through federal appropriations. If the right amounts were appropriated, the programs survived; if lesser amounts were given, chances for program failure were good; however, was funding support the deciding factor? This book used multiple case studies and the unorthodox methodology of applied content analysis of Congressional budget hearings to examine Air Force efforts to fund the most recent main bombers it sought (the B-70, B-1A, B-1B, and B-2A) and to determine measurements of success. The author's findings have implications concerning the way the United States handles procurement initiatives for major new weapon systems considered fundamental necessities for national defense.

3 out of 5 stars Photos alone worth the price, though text lacks detail........2005-07-11

This book is a brief(92 pages), introductory look at the two major classes of destroyers currently in use by the US Navy, the Spruance Class DD, and the Arleigh Burke Class DDG.

Text wise the book includes a brief introduction of the history of the destroyer, which should be a book in itself, a chapter of the Spruance class, one on the Burke Class, and then one on weapon systems and future products. Though the chapters on the Spruance and Burke are interesting, the supporting chapters are lacking. For example, at the time of publication there was plenty of information regarding the proposed DD 21 or DDX class of future destroyers. The author mentions this in passing, without including any relevant detail.

Where the book shines is in the photography. Shots both by the author, the Navy, Ingalls Shipbuilding, and Bath Iron Works present fascinating depictions of the destroyers in all stages of construction, sea trials, and even combat use. The photography is simply beautiful, and allows for a better understanding of the ships, their weapons systems, and the little bits and pieces that you only see up close but make up such an important part of any ship.

Naval enthusiasts will enjoy the photography immensely and merely skim through the text. The average Joe will enjoy both, Is this book worth $10?? Absolutely.

3 out of 5 stars Good photos but General Information.......2001-05-25

I am 90% through the book and it's a disappointment compared to Stephen's excellent book on "Carrier Battle Group." The text information is very general and vague and is more geared towards someone who has never seen a destroyer before. Anyone who lived during and read the newspapers on the Gulf War or went to a few "Fleet Weeks" would know the information contained in this book.

The book is divided into four parts: Spruance-class destroyers, Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, weapons, and the future of destroyers like stealthy Sea Shadow. The Spruance and Burke sections make up 85% of the book.

The information is not much different than what one can read off the web or a Cold War book. In fact, a few pages of information were summarized from a 1986 Cold War book I have as to then-Congress's reaction to the Spruance destroyers' design.

The new content is not enlightening and causes a bit of confusion too. Not much range or facts are given as to weapon and system performance although one can find these off the internet. The ranges that are given for some weapons conflict with other documented text.

Unlike "Carrier Battle Group," this book has very few quotes and first-person opinions. It's all narration and at times, the author repeats the same information on different pages. Thus, I found this book rushed to printing. There are a few spelling and grammar errors that stand out that I have never seen in a Motorbook before. One photo caption states, "Helicopters cap refuel while hovering over the ship." "Cap" should be "can."

The book is only 97 pages (unlike other Motorbooks which are longer) and the text is pretty large font. Some pages are nothing but photos and I find the photo captions more informative than the text. Unlike "Carrier Battle Group," the photos on the page do not go with the text on it so one has to flip backwards or forwards a few pages to see what the author is talking about.

The back cover says the book gives a tour of the ship. This is not really true. The photos do somewhat, but the book text doesn't. The book text says the CIC does this and the bridge is where one drives the ship, information that is obvious and can be obtained via some other books or a trip to the Navy's "Fleet Week."

I find this book isn't really written for an adult audience but more for a teen or child due to the lack of information, first-hand accounts, and description. There's not much new to learn information from reading this book if you know a few things about the Navy and its ships.

    4 out of 5 stars Poor man's Janes' - when your company isn't paying.......1999-06-01

As a Computer Combat Simulations Analyst who recreates units and equipment on a simulation training model for the US Army Reserve and National Guard - I find this book a handy reference to create workaround vehicles not able to be replicated by my database. In such cases, visuals of similar equipment are invaluable.

My only criticism stems from the work related uses I need this book for. The MIXING of competitors prototypes with actually accepted models of (especially) support vehicles is mildly annoying. Ditto for historical items no longer in the current inventory. Putting these units in their own chapters - dividing by service - would make this book even more valuable for me as a user.

Other than Janes' series ($$$$) which my company isn't about to pay for - this is one of the few available volumes that has visuals on current Army support, engineering vehicles, specialty vehicles and truck, tanker, cargo and utility vehicles.

As a suggestion, the Army also owns logistics boats of 300'+ length in it's Transportation Co and Bn's - putting them in would be very entertaining for the casual reader.

Good book. Buy it, use it and enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Fun reading but not technically informative........1999-03-28

Mr. Crismon's Modern US Military Vehicles is a fun book to browse through. However, its technical information and photographic quality is disappointing. This book does not compare favorably to the 2 previous books in this series, the wonderfully informative- US Military Wheeled Vehicles and US Military Tracked Vehicles.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful quick reference guide.......1998-12-14

An excellent scource for information on some of the lesser known vehicles in the US inventory. Good pictures although lacking in text and technical data. As a battle simulation instructor for the US Army one needs to have up to date reference material and this book will definately help me with my job.As this book shows the armed forces use a lot of equipment and it is hard to keep it straight even when you work on it on a day to day basis. So this is a valuable assest.

    Book Description

Conceived during World War I, tanks still play a crucial role on the modern battlefield providing excellent mobility, sophisticated communications, lethal firepower, and effective armor protection. Together, these assets provide the shock effect necessary to close with and destroy the enemy in most any condition. Modern U.S. Tanks AFVs examines the development, capabilities, and service histories of some of the most important and interesting tanks, armored fighting vehicles (AFVs), wheeled armored firepower, and indirect armored fire-support vehicles used by the U.S. military today, including: amphibious assault vehicles (AAVP), the full range of M1 Abrams tanks, Bradleys, armored Humvees, and Strykers. In typical ECS fashion, color photographs depict each type in training exercises. There will also be discussions of how the 1999 'Army Vision' transformation strategy calling for lighter and more maneuverable armed forces precipitated the development of some of the weapons covered.

5 out of 5 stars One Beaut of a Book! .......2005-06-11

This publication goes out of it's way to show US Armor in all it's possible glory. Although I was at first horrifed to see the book was printed in CHINA, the money saved for highest quality printing and production was worth the irony of having our greatest 21st Century potential military foe printing a book cataloging our armored force.

This is a rare gem of a publication that focuses exclusively on our current era equipment, the source materials, editing and content showing production topic and story discipline very rare in this book category. The book strikes a unique balance between pictures and content. It is not a "list" book - but a beautiful portrait of the US Army and Marine Corps in 21st Century military transition.

Divided between "legacy equipment" and transitional/future combat platforms by track and wheel, tank, AFV, rocket and tube artillery, the book goes into a level of detail that keeps military buffs satisfied - and confuses only a minority of curious civilians. This is more than a starter book.

I enjoyed the clarity of content and portrayal of weapons systems, comprehensive and easy to understand historical storyline and current contractors proudly displaying their latest (2002/2003)production. The detail level is astonishingly accurate - I being directly involved in many of these programs as a defense contractor/retired Army officer. FBCB2 (digital) data in the M-1A2 or M-1D tanks is bleeding edge state of the art capability shared with the reader!

The nostalgia of reviewing early 1980's legacy equipment brought back fond memories of wonderful people, interesting places and threats that no longer exist. Anyone who has served from 1970 on will be be fascinated with the progress of armored vehicle development, capabilities and the lethality of newer equipment. Equipment is mostly shown in field use - photography is stunningly first rate. Looks like many contractor marketing and testing photographs were used.

NOT included are pictures of our latest improvisations and armor updates to the threat our forces face in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since publication - "birdcage" RPG screens have been added to the Stryker and M1114 uparmored HMMWVs have undergone additional modifications. I hope a newer addition of this book sees print.

Pretty enough to display to your liberal friends as a "coffee table" book - the rich color photographs and clear readable storyline of a force in transition is a wonderful addition to anyone's military library.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book on Tanks and AFVs.......2003-11-05

Modern U.S. Tanks and AFVs condenses hard-to-find information into an attractive an easy-to-read format. The four chapters are Tanks, Armored Infantry Vehicles, Wheeled Armored Firepower and Indirect Armored Fire Support. The photography is uniformly excellent and the book's color reproduction is unusually high in quality. A glance at the credits shows that the authors went out of their way to get information from people directly involved with the development, fielding, operation and support of these vehicles. This book provides an easy way to learn about the latest developments in ground combat current technology and tactics. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Reference.......2003-10-30

Mike Green and Greg Stewart have done another outstanding job with "Modern U.S. Tanks & AFVs." This impressive single-source reference provides a very informative overview of U.S. armored vehicles. The photographs are impressive and include some rarely seen photos. This book will be an important addition to the library of anyone interested in the subject of modern U.S. armor.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A Great Book On U.S.'s Current Armored Forces.......2003-10-29

I have been looking for the most recent information on what our boys overseas are fighting with in terms of armored vehicles and this book definitely provides the most up to date information with references to recent events in 2003. Every significant armored vehicle in the current US inventory is described in detailed words and pictures. You will not be bored if you are into armor. Being partial to tanks I am alarmed to learn that more of our forces are depending on lightly armored wheeled vehicles now and in the future. It is my hope that recent experiences with RPGs rockets in Iraq will convince Pentagon planners to put our citizen soldiers under better protection.

There have been so many books about wars and their weapons that one might wonder at the need for another, but the focus is different, here: Bill Yenne's Secret Gadgets And Strange Gizmos: High-Tech (And Low-tech) Innovations Of The U.S. Military narrows the focus to the secret, behind the scenes and largely forgotten inventions and theories of these wars, surveying some lesser-known weapons and military systems from World War 1 onward. These include the strange 'lobber' missile, spy satellites, night-attack systems and nuclear explosion detection devices. Chapters cover history, manufacture, testing results and more and provide plenty of black and white and color photo embellishment: a highly recommended pick any military collection should have.
