Book Description

"Many parents I meet," says John Croyle, "feel discouraged and defeated in their relationships with their children. They want to be good parents, but they don't know where to find that `something extra' within. This book is meant to give you some positive principles that will help you find that. Then you in turn can bring out the winner in your child."

Bringing Out the Winner in Your Child challenges parents to examine their skills, recognize their inadequacies, and love their children enough to make the changes needed to provide a stable, peaceful home. Croyle's life is an inspiring story of an All-American defensive end whose love for children prompted his coach, the legendary Bear Bryant, to advise him to "forget about pro football and follow your dream."

In 1974 Croyle founded Big Oak Ranch as a home for abused, neglected, or abandoned children. Since then it has been a refuge and a natural, loving environment for more than 1,500 children from ages six to twenty-one.

Croyle's practical guide to raising children encourages parents to develop skills as guardian, disciplinarian, provider, and friend so they can provide their children with love, stability, protection, and wisdom. His wide-ranging experience is the basis for his many lessons in dealing with typical parenting problems. Croyle offers such valuable insights as how children listen with their eyes (not their ears), how children and adults speak different languages, how realistic boundaries can affect children in positive ways, and how discipline with love, not anger, creates an atmosphere of growth and trust.

His daughter, Reagan, was a four-year member of the women's varsity basketball team at the University of Alabama. Croyle's son, Brodie, was the top-rated high school quarterback in America when he graduated in 1990, and in 2002 he became the starting quarterback of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

5 out of 5 stars All kids can be winners.......2007-07-23

I met John Croyle a few years ago at a fundraiser for Big Oak Ranches put on by country music legends Alabama (done every year as part of their Fan Apprecation celebration). He was extremely cordial and very sincere about his life's work. In the few minutes we chatted my impression was that 'this guy knows what he is doing, and he knows he's doing the right thing'. This book very concisely expresses his values and opinions as well as genuine love and concern for all children.

My kids are grown and gone, now parents themselves. They were raised with similar values and responsibilites with very good results. I'll be passing John's book on to them.

5 out of 5 stars This should be every parent's textbook.......1999-08-10

John takes the reader through his step by step process of raising a child to be successful. Over their 25 years of raising disadvantaged and abused children John and his wife Tee have changed the lives of many children in a positive way. This book will give you the gameplan you need to raise your children to be Winners. This should be mandatory reading for every prospective parent.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for all parents, care givers, teachers,etc........1998-11-22

I didn't know what to expect from the book. Once I started to read it I was amazed how much I had to learn. I always felt I was making the right choices in situations where my children were concerned. This book helped me realize many of my decisions were right but there was so much room for improvement. I just started a new career in teaching. I am in a classroom with severely emotionlly disturbed children. The section of the book about boundries and how important they are holds great meaning for me. These children want someone to care enough about them to make those hard disciplinary decisions. It takes time, patients, love, and the will to want to help create a caring, responsible human being. This is too often more than most parents feel they can give. This book could put them in the right direction. I hope parents in need will read!

4 out of 5 stars Good Local Area History.......2000-08-31

This book covers N MS, N AL, and Middle TN from 5 Sept. 1864 though 6 Oct. 1864. Events preparing the attack of CS General Hood on Franklin and Nashville, TN in late 1864. In great detail you will understand the feats of CS General Forrest's, "The Wizard of the Saddle", conquest of Union forces with only 4500 men (3500+ Union troops captured). You will discover why US General Grant and Sherman moved 30,000 troops into this area to stop Forrest's success over an area of 200 sq. miles. This well written book also explains several acts of bravery by USCT (Black Troops) along US General Sherman's supply lines and the avenue for advertising the 600 captured Black troops return to slavery. The reader will understand why US Generals Grant and Sherman offered rewards for this Confederate General's capture either dead or alive. General Sherman preferred "devil Forrest" dead. The history is written in an exciting and concise manner with unit actions and commanders view points given from both sides of the conflict. Several individual accounts of escape, daring, and determination by both Union and Rebel soldiers are told in a honest and honorable manner. The book is very interesting reading for the Civil War history reader.

4 out of 5 stars The Campaign that Captured Jeff Davis........2004-02-07

In the spring of 1865 Union General James Wilson mounted a cavalry campaign designed to destroy the industrial sections of Alabama and Georgia that were still untouched by combat. From the Tennessee River to Selma and Montgomery Alabama and on to Columbus and Macon, Georgia this campaign was lightening fast, crushing everything in its path.

Moving 14,000 men over 500 miles in just a month is a remarkably uncommon feat. So is fighting 4 major battles along the way. But General Wilson's forgotten campaign not only defeated and captured Nathan Bedford Forrest but also captured Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens as well.

This book is the study of a massive Union cavalry operation that was executed with impunity, one that destroyed what little was left of the Confederacy. It is also the campaign that captured the Confederate government!

James Pickett Jones details this event exceptionally well. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A vividly reconstructed account tracing Wilson's run.......2001-03-11

In the spring of 1865, Major General James H. Wilson and 14,000 Union cavalry troops destroyed key Confederate industrial facilities in what had been, until then, relatively unscathed areas of Alabama and Georgia. Yankee Blitzkrieg: Wilson's Raid Through Alabama And Georgia is a vividly reconstructed account tracing Wilson's lightning run south and places the campaign within the larger context of the last days of the Civil War. Historian James Jones describes in detail the strategic background of the raid, covers the raid from both sides, and notes the economic significance of the industrial facilities destroyed. Jones' description of Wilson's capture of Jefferson Davis is the standard interpretation of what happened when Davis was taken by Union forces. Yankee Blitzkrieg is superb reading for Civil War buffs and students of Civil War history.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent study of one of the most ignored campaigns!.......1997-04-08

Yankee Bltizkrieg is one of the most enlightening studies of Wison's raiders in their finest hour. The book follows Wilson and his men from rain drenched northern Alabama to a triumphant capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Irwinville, Georgia. It explores how Wilson effectively moved over 12,000 men for over 500 miles in the span of about a month. A feat which would have made Guderian proud! It is a must for Civil War enthusiasts and military strategist

    Book Description

"The most brilliant expedition of the Civil War." --General William Tecumseh Sherman

In 1863 Union colonel Benjamin H. Grierson was chosen for a secret mission: to lead three regiments of horsemen and a battery of artillery -- seventeen hundred men in all -- on a slashing raid through the state of Mississippi. Their objective was to damage a major Confederate rail line, spreading alarm and destroying enemy supplies in the process. Union leaders were relying on Grierson to provide cover as they moved thousands of troops into position for a major and ultimately victorious assault on Vicksburg, the South's vital transportation hub on the Mississippi River. Owing to Grierson's shrewd tactics, as well as luck and the skilled soldiering of his men, the raid was wildly successful in every respect.

Here is an exciting day-by-day account of this grueling sixteen-day adventure, which weaves together several first-person accounts from Grierson and his soldiers themselves and is heavily illustrated with maps and period photographs.

    Book Description

In war, the raid is the epitome of daring. Usually outnumbered, raiders launch surprise attacks behind enemy lines, taking prisoners, destroying communications, and seizing supplies. In the Civil War, these men marauded on horseback, stunning opponents with their speed and mobility. This book covers the adventurous and often dangerous exploits of the Union and Confederate cavalry officers who had a flair for plunging into the enemy's lair. Covers raids from J. E. B. Stuart's 1862 ride around McClellan's army to James Wilson's crushing raids in Alabama and Georgia in 1865.

4 out of 5 stars Raiding - Civil War Style.......2005-06-02

The author, retired Colonel Black, wrote that fighting pitched battles is not the purpose of a raid, and notes that raids are "A sudden and often surprising attack. The purpose of a raid was not to gain or hold ground, but to confuse, disrupt, destroy, capture or free, and the force withdrew after the mission is accomplished." The text is organized in two main sections: Chapters 1 thru 3, Confederate Raids; Chapters 4 thru 7 Union Raids. These chapters review major Civil War raids and their accomplishments.

The first raid narrated was Confederate Cavalry General Jeb Stuart's June 1862 ride around Union General McClellan. The author states "This was the first major raid of the war, and Jeb Stuart's reputation soared." "....Stuart's ride around McClellan caused Union leadership to take men needed for the battle line to guard Washington D.C., and the Confederate success lowered morale in the North and raised it in the South." Confederate General Wheeler's October 1963 raid on Union General Rosecrans's wagons was said to have had mixed results; however, Rosecrans lost 500 critically needed wagons which was the largest lost of its kind in the war. Wade Hampton's cattle raid in September 1864 netted 2,468 cattle; and Union General Grants jokingly said "I have the best commissary in the army, he not only feeds my army, but that of the enemy also." The text covers ten (10) Confederate raids from June 1862 through November 1864.

Regarding Union cavalry Col. Black observes "In the first two years of the war, the Union cavalry was largely ineffective as a result of poor leadership and organization, and given assignments that did not hone cavalry skills." In addition the U.S. Cavalry began with better armament, but here again misjudgments were made." It wasn't until February 1863 when General Hooker recognized cavalry as an excellent tool, and organized Union cavalry into a corps of three cavalry division under Maj. Gen. Stoneman that an effective/capable organization was available.

The book gives an excellent narrative of the April-May 1863 raid by Col. Grierson in support of General Grant's Vicksburg campaign. Grant wanted to divert Confederate attention from Vicksburg, and keep their forces scattered. Grierson and his raiders "created a furor in the Confederate rear that greatly assisted Grant in taking his army across the Mississippi." By March-April 1865, when Stoneman raided Virginia and North Carolina and Wilson raided Selma both Union and Confederate soldiers knew the war was over. The text covers fourteen (14) Union cavalry raids from November 1862 through April 1865.

The text contains brief biographies of the principal characters. Most interesting was that Confederate cavalry generals Joe Wheeler and Thomas Rosser served in the American Army after the war serving in the Spanish-American War. Most interesting, Samuel Carter who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy was made a Union brigadier general of volunteers in May 1862 and was promoted to major general in 1865. Amazingly, while he was an army general, the navy promoted him to commander. After the war he served in the navy from which he retired in 1881.

The book contains several proof reading errors. For example, on page 47 the book erroneously lists Washington College (later Washington and Lee College) in Staunton later correctly listing it in Lexington; on page 156 the text reads "Stuart mad certain" instead of "made certain", etc. In addition, some readers may disagree with Col. Black calling General Joseph Eggleston a "superb Confederate strategist."

Finally, the book contains an excellent section titled Soldiers Talk: Civil War Terms and Expressions. The reader will find this book interesting; it is an informative narration of major Civil War cavalry raids.

    3 out of 5 stars Fast Read...................2002-04-05

Details details.. I wish this book had more of them. I was a bit disappointed in getting this hardcover to see that I could read it in a couple of days. The pages go by fast as they cover Morgan's daring raids throughout Kentucky and the north. I was hoping to get more information than the quick coverage of the events that Morgan and his raiders went through. I would have liked to get some insight from his companions in the field and also from his enemy. This book seems to summarize Morgan and probably isn't the best when it comes to dates and details. It is important to suggest this book for anyone looking to read about a different Confederate cavalry commander instead of Mosby or Stuart that doesn't want to get into serious details. Perhaps this book exemplifies Morgan himself. It was short and fast. Morgan started his command quickly and finished quickly.

        Book Description

The famed Union fighting force of William T. Sherman was plagued by a lack of first-rate cavalry-until James Harrison Wilson transformed a collection of independent regiments and brigades with fierce effectiveness. Wilson's Cavalry helped thwart Confederate General Hood's 1864 invasion of Tennessee, then moved south for the capture of Selma, Montgomery, and Columbus. This book is the first history of the Cavalry Corps, with particular attention paid to Wilson's achievement in creating an infrastructure for his corps.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars These men were the first Selma freedom riders!.......2006-11-28

Beginning in 1863, the Union Army reorganized its cavalrymen into mounted corps of troopers. They could then be assigned to scout and screen, but they could also be quickly concentrated to act as effective forces on their own. In the east, J.E.B. Stuart found that he could no longer ride circles around the Union Army. Alfred Pleasanton's new cavalry corps stood in his way so effectively that when he tried to do so toward the end of June 1863, Stuart discovered he could not get back to General Lee. He didn't get back until the battle of Gettysburg was two-thirds over, and the new and effective Union cavalry arm again thwarted his role in the battle on the third day.
In the west that year, Grierson's Raid into the heart of the Deep South demonstrated even more clearly the tremendous striking power of Union cavalry. A year later, after Atlanta fell, General Grant dispatched James Harrison Wilson to do for Sherman what Phil Sheridan was doing for him. That October, Wilson took command of the Cavalry Corps, Military Division of the Mississippi, soon to be known as Wilson's Cavalry Corps, composed of 17,000 well-armed troopers.
Wilson, young, fit and handsome, combined great organizational skill with the charisma and charm of a born leader. He led his corps of mounted men to Franklin and Nashville where they did their part to destroy forever the Confederate Army of Tennessee. The following spring, he took them on the most successful independent cavalry operation of the war. Cutting across Alabama, he destroyed the rebel cavalry led by Nathan Bedford Forrest at Selma, then rode on to end the war in Macon, Georgia.
Author Jerry Keenan's book on this subject, first published in 1998, suffers from the want of numerous clear and informative maps, but other than that, it provides what any reader interested in Wilson and his men will want. His account is concise, orderly, and gives an excellent overview of Wilson's corps from its formation to its disbandment in the summer of 1865.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-07

First, let me say that I'm not much of a history reader, no matter what the subject matter. And war stories really isn't my thing either. So how was it that I got into reading "The Butternut Guerillas" by Larry Underwood? Rather easily, if I do say so myself. Early one morning (like 5:00 A.M.) I was into my early morning 2-mile walk on the bike path with my two walking buddies, and one of them is a history nut. By chance, he got to talking about the Civil War and mentioned this book to me. He talked about the story and how these men that were Yankee soldiers and called the Butternut Guerillas played a major part in the Civil War, under the leadership of Benjamin Grierson. And their company was mostly from southern Illinois. Now he had my attention. The first thing I asked was if the non-fiction story was boring, because if it didn't grab my attention right off the bat, I wasn't going to waste my time. "Not at all. In fact, I think you'll enjoy the heck out of that book. I did," Big Ed replied. Then I asked if he thought the local library had the book, and of course, he knew that it did. Later that day, I found myself in the library, picking up the small hardback. I'm the world's worst about thumbing through a book, looking at introductions, prologues, dedications, and even to the end of the book for final words. Needless to say, at the end of this little book was a roster of the Sixth & Seventh Cavalry Regiments from Illinois. Men's names from Hardin County, White County, Saline County, Pope County, and names that were familiar to the area, even names from different towns. And you must remember, this was in 1863-65. I was amazed at the names, so I read nearly every one of the field and staff members, when I ran across the name John W. Rogers, Saline County, Illinois. And I immediately knew this was my grandfather's brother. My very own great-uncle John W. Rogers. Little was said about this man while I was a young girl growing up, and when I tried to ask, I was simply told that "Uncle John was kind of the black sheep of the family". I guess everybody has one of some kind or the other. Regardless, Uncle John is buried in the family's cemetery plot and I put flowers on his grave every Memorial Day, even though I never knew him. He didn't play a big part in the book because he was simply a Yankee soldier, not one of the Butternut Guerillas, but now I couldn't put the book down. And believe me, without a doubt this is one of the best-written Civil War stories that has probably ever been told. I was totally amazed at the dialogue and how well Underwood told the events that transpired. In fact, I almost felt like I was there with those guys. This book is EXCELLENT. I can't believe that it hasn't been reviewed before. If you're a history nut and like to know how the events of the war transpired, this book is a great insight. The next time I'm honored with Big Ed's presence on the bike path, I'll have to tell him so.
