4 out of 5 stars if you're looking for a book with no coddling.......2002-07-06

This book has been an enormous help to me and I've read a lot of books....The Strong willed child, the difficult child, etc. They either encourage brutal force or hand-holding, neither of which I agree with. This is just straight forward, don't be stupid, you're the adult, parenting. And I like that. I got so tired of reading books that enouraged me to talk my child down gently from his or her tantrum. Please!!! Dr. Garvey puts it right out on the line, if you're child is over the age of about two or three and is still having tantrums, then it is quite clear who is in control of the child/parent relationship....the kid!! Then there have been books I've read that made me think that if my child is out of control that maybe she is ADHD. I knew this could not be possible since her teachers do not have a problem with her....the problem seems to be just with me. Dr. Garvey talks about why kids do the things they do. (Why they talk back, why they're bossy, why they whine) He refers to them as "oppositional styles" Basically, they do these things because it works for them. Dr. Garvey explains in the book how to handle these oppositional styles and how once you correct one style, the other styles will correct themselves. It's all about what you expect from your child. I think too many parents are "enablers." We've all become a bunch of wusses. We've forgotten who's in charge, myself included. And Dr. Garvey helps to remind you that you are in charge. Although let me say, he also encourages family meetings and giving kids choices to create a feeling a fairness in the home. It's like democracy with a firm reasonable leader at the helm.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute best book to start with.......2001-06-14

I have read many good and helpful books but this is the only one which gives an effective strategy on where to start. With a demanding and misbehaving child,a parent can be easilly overwhelmed when they try to change unwanted behaviors or wear themselves out tackling the symptoms of the problem. This book focuses on the way children talk and relate during discipline which is easily overlooked when trying to correct a misbehavior. It also lists the many parenting styles that do not work and why. I have recomended this book to several friends who have found it very readable with very easy to work with. We used this book in conjunction with "The manipulative child" and our child is now happy, confident and fun to be around. People are constantly remarking on the positive changes.

3 out of 5 stars Needs more in depth information.......2000-05-12

This book seemed more like a compilation of other discipline books that I've read and didn't provide any new insight. I didn't think the book was in depth enough to be effective and really didn't offer any suggestions for children too young to reason with.

5 out of 5 stars Ain't Misbehavin' : The 10 Discipline Issues Every Parent Fa.......1999-12-04

I read books and write reviews for the tokyowithkids.com web site, and this is one of the best books I've come across. Easy to understand, positive, and extremely down to earth, logical and helpful. Since I've been using Garvey's advice with my three year old, there have been a lot fewer blow-ups. That's saying something.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Resource!.......1999-03-19

As a family therapist, I often recommend Dr. Garvey's excellent book to my clients. The feedback has been uniformly positive and many of the parents tell me it's the most useful book on parenting they've read!

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2007-07-03

I'm currently serving as a Captain in the Air Force with Space Command. There's a possibility I might transfer to the Army through Blue to Green. Since I wouldn't be attending any type of OCS, I have to learn as much as I can on my own. This book has described all the branches, career paths, promotions, etc. It's been an invaluable tool and helped me make my decision an where to go in the Army - Military Police Corps.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-02-18

This reference will tell you everything you need to know and more about being an Army officer.

5 out of 5 stars Must have resource for new officers.......2007-01-10

I read this before Basic, and it made my life a lot easier. It's full of "somebody should have told me" information. I bought an older version than is currently available, which doesn't have the ACUs or beret, but much of the information is a hundred years old and still relevant.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for an United States Army officer........2007-01-02

I am honorably discharged as a Captian from the United States Army. This is the book that tells you the basics of what to expect in terms of military branches, duty stations, the Army "language", etc. Every US Army officer needs this book. It is a great reference for family, friends, media, and those who write about the Army. It has some excellent leadership principles in the book as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to teach a new officer what is expected of them!.......2006-11-04

I bought this book after feeling out of my element as a new Army officer. There are so many little acronyms and words that I had no idea what they meant. This book helped emensly. It will go through what is expected of you, how to act, what to do, what not to do. I would definitely recommend this book to others who have recently joined, or are thinking of joining the Army as an officer.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Practical Leadership.......2007-03-28

This manual has evolved over the years, and while it extrapolates from the theories of Transformational/Transactional Leadership, it gets down to where the "rubber meets the road." This is leadership 101 in practical application with many real world examples inserted in key places to demonstrate that this is not just "hot air" to pump up some author's ego blimp. While this may be a military focused book, with a clear sense of situations (while not life threatening) one can interpolate the stressful leadership issues in a civilian context that can have dire personal economic consequences. This book will "Git 'er done!"

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-22

Reads just like the Army manuel we received in the military but in laymans terms.

    4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-04

As the army's touchstone for leadership, The U.S. Army Leadership Field Manual stresses ethics, high moral character and the honorable refusal to obey unlawful orders. This volume makes you ask, "How could the prison abuse incidents in Iraq in 2004 have happened?" American army training repeatedly emphasizes moral leadership, character and integrity, as seen in this primary field manual of leadership, which is used by soldiers and officers everywhere. Read the principles that helped shape such leaders such as Marshall, Eisenhower, Schwarzkopf and Powell. You can employ many of their lessons of moral courage and determination in the corporate boardroom.
We highly recommend this very readable book for those who seek to put current events into clearer context and to make use of their lessons.

4 out of 5 stars Cheap and good.......2004-05-03

This book is very cheap. Just about the cheapest leadership book you can buy. But its valuable knowledge far exceeds its price. There is a reason why this book is used for mandatory leadership curriculum at West Point and virtually all military leadership training schools. It teaches soldier to 1)Be of strong ethical and moral character (loyalty, integrity, discipline) 2)Know valuable skills and knowledge (technical and personal) 3)Do utilize the leadership skills to make a difference.

There is a best selling book "Be, Know, Do" which relies heavily from this book as a source. I recommend buying this book instead because it is much cheaper and contains virtually all the information contained in that one.

I wish this book was thicker with even more useful information. The book could have expounded far more in detail, especially things related to interpersonal skills (communication and motivation). I know there is a wealth of psychological research on the subject of leadership which the book could have used for further enlightenment. But the book limits its focus only on its history and military leaders as a source.

Leadership is a deep and complex subject because it requires one to deeply understand oneself and the others. This book provides a solid basis.

      Book Description

In addition to military academies and Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), the United States military services draw a significant number of officer trainees from the military enlisted ranks and from civilian college graduates, commissioning them as second lieutenants or ensigns after completing Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Officer Training School (OTS) programs. This brand-new manual prepares candidates to pass the acceptance tests for those schools. It presents in-depth reviews of all test topics, which include math knowledge and reasoning, word knowledge and reading comprehension, and general science. Specialized topic reviews include mechanical and spatial comprehension and flight aptitude. Full-length practice tests are as follows: two Air Force Officer Qualifying Tests (AFOQT); three Army/Marine Corps OCS test; and three practice tests for Navy OCS and Marine Corps/Coast Guard Aviation applicants. All tests come with answer keys.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Beware bad math.......2007-10-03

Although this book is the only one that I know of that covers the revised AFOQT, don't buy it unless you have no other option. You would be better served by simply buying an older but better book and reading on the internet about current changes to the tests.

The mathematics section is where I noticed most of the mistakes, because they were easiest to spot there. And I'm not talking about typos either. Some of the "explanations" give you blatantly false information, such as "Square roots cannot be multiplied or divided, only added and subtracted." That is the exact opposite of truth! The only positive is that I got lots of extra math practice by having to do many problems multiple times to determine if I made a mistake or the book did. For the record, fully 15% of the math problems are incorrect!

I shudder to think about errors in other sections where I am not well versed enough to notice the mistakes. How many might there be in the pilot section?

I should point out that the author of this book, Rod Powers, is a retired USAF 1st Sergeant. That's right, a retired enlisted member. If his math was of this level, its no wonder he never got a commission.

      5 out of 5 stars must have.......2007-05-04

Out of all the prep material purchased, I found this item to be the most useful and beneficial. Not only is it the most current and up to date afoqt book around, but MANY of the questions mirror the actual questions that will be found on the test. I was able to breeze through many sections due to the challenge this book put forth. Yes, there are a FEW errors, but I found that to be true to some extent in all my purchases. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

2 out of 5 stars Too many errors for a test prep book........2007-02-05

I would agree with the guy who previously reviewed this. I am in the process of studying for the AFOQT and while taking the math practice exercises I have found three errors in the first 41 questions. What gives? Someone should have checked these before going to print.

Under the Mathmatics Knowledge practice exercises, there are errors on #28, #34, and #41. And I am not even all the way through yet.

3 out of 5 stars Rod Powers should be ashamed of himself........2006-11-18

It's a useful book, I'll give him that. It's also one of only two on the market that seemed very applicable to someone about to take the Navy Officer Aptitude Rating Exam. I don't have massive time to study. I work 8-15hr days. I work about every third weekend, and sometimes 3-4 weekends in a row. I work out 2-4 times/day. I'm trying to make the All-Navy Triathlon Team. I have two degrees.

Which is why when I do sit down and study something written by a 23-year veteran of the military, about something that he should be intimately familiar with, it disturbs me that there are so many mistakes.

I scored 3 wrong answers on one of the math tests. Mr. Rod Powers had at least 7 wrong answers, and he had the benefit OF WRITING THE TEST, with presumably a few math books open right next to him. Did no-one proof-read this or go through all the tests to make sure the answers matched the questions?

In some instances, he even had the right answer to the question listed in an explanation, but the answer key was wrong. Once he even has two explanations, one wrong and one right. Some answers are COMPLETELY unrelated to the question asked.

Some of the basic math he teaches is just BLATANTLY WRONG, not that I remember much from AP Math back fifteen years ago, but I'm pretty sure his stuff about square roots is just not right.

Holy crap, pal. If this is the best you can do, then the US Air Force was wrong to keep you around for 23 years. Good game job security working for the government, huh?

From the Tally Shooter Writers' Group:

The sixth edition of this perennial best-seller has finally hit the streets! (OK,it finally hit the "river" since it's only available at Amazon.com right now.)

Very much up-to-date, the revisions to the 1999 edition of the NCO's bible provide Army noncoms with a made-to-order reference for just about any situation they may come across in today's modern army. The author, CSM (Retired) Robert S. Rush, has taken this guide to new heights. There are revised sections in the guide on caring leadership, training, NCO career development and promotions, awards and decorations, and "customs and courtesies." Army policy concerning the new fraternization rules-of-engagement is included and the latest military Web site info pertinent to NCOs is included as appendix.

The benefits of owning this book are enormous. Tuck it in your BDU trouser pocket before you deploy and you will have a modern day reference containing individual treatises on one of the broadest compilations of NCO subject matter ever made available in print.

      A must-have guide.

2 out of 5 stars Army version of 'The Rules'.......2007-02-28

I ordered this book, as a service member, hoping it might help in those intricate situations not quite covered by the regulations. I suppose it does that in its way, but only for the Army and only for wives. There is no guidance for the other services, despite the broadened appeal that would offer. Also, this book is more modern then a version from the 60s would be, but not by much. It is very gender specific and traditional. However, my biggest grudge is how misleading the title is, though that may be paltry. Nonetheless, it should be "A Wife's Guide to Customs and Courtesies of the Army." I am extremely irritated that I bought this book that is utterly useless to me and I don't even have anybody to hand it off to.
