This book is amazing!.......2006-11-15
I have met Marcus Engel, and he is a really good guy. His story is haunting and very vivid. It is so sad what has happened to him, but he does not grieve over it. His book touched me so much that I want to tell everyone else about it!!!
Engrossing & Poignant.......2006-05-09
Marcus uses vivid descriptions to share his very personal account of injury and recovery. He brings readers into his life and makes them feel as though they know him. Through this connection, others are inspired to overcome obstacles and take control of life.
Inspiring, motivating and well worth it!.......2006-05-08
Marcus' vivid, truthful and honest depiction of a horrific event makes the reader stop and think. The impact Marcus leaves is invaluable and will last a lifetime. Marcus' journey is not a tale of tragic woe, but one of empowerment and inspiration. He encourages you to see obstacles and challenges as opportunities. One comment that stays in my mind is "Negativity won't pull you through." How very right he is.
Entertaining read, great story, meaningful message.......2006-05-08
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Marcus' story is engaging and a real page-turner. His insights and humor make the book really enjoyable. Everyone I've loaned my copy to has loved it!

Book Description
Diana Foxton is the toast of New York. She's rich, British, and beautiful, with a designer wardrobe to die for. Recently married to the head of a publishing empire, she fills her days with shopping, gossiping, and hosting the hottest parties in town. But when Diana discovers her husband is having an affair, her glamorous bubble bursts. She suddenly finds herself without any money or job qualifications, shunned by the glittering society that she once ruled. On her own for the first time, she takes the only job she can get, exchanges her Manolo Blahniks for Payless, and tries awkwardly--and hilariously--to settle into the life of a woman who does her own laundry, buys her own groceries, and takes the bus. Will she attempt to regain her throne? And can romance find her again?

Teaches you a lesson.......2006-09-14
This book is great. It got straight to the point and you realize that life is not always green when you have money. The book really shows every characters point of view which helps the reader really become a part of the story. It's great and I got attached. I found myself really loving certain characters and could not stop turning the pages.
A fair read.......2005-12-13
This book started out interesting and then got bogged down by Ms. Bagshawe's repetitivenes.
The novel tells the story of Diana, a spolied and beautiful English woman who marries Ernie. Ernie is not an upper-class man, but has become quite wealthy as a corporate raider type in a big publishing firm. Together they move to New York City where Diana becomes a society wife while Ernie becomes even more ruthless in business. During the course of Ernie's business dealings, he meets Michael Cicero, a small publisher of children's books. He takes a dislike to Michael and vows to destroy him.
Meanwhle, Diana and Ernie's marriage falls apart and Diana is left humiliated and penniless. Somehow, she manages to fend for herself and begins working with Michael. A love affair of course ensues.
It makes for a fast read but is very much spoiled by repetitiveness. Bagshawe must provide at least a hundred descriptions of Diana's beauty, Michael's attraction to Diana, and Diana's attraction to Michael. This gets very old and makes the story drag on and on.
A fair try but is in desperate need of more imaginaion and good editing.
Romantic tale of revenge.......2005-05-31
Diana Foxton marries publisher Ernie for money, hoping that the love will come along later if she provides a great home for him. After expressing boredom, she asks one of his new managers for a position in his office. Michael is not really enthusiastic about hiring British Diana as he thinks she is too cold and unfeeling.
Michael also does not realize that the plum contract he signed with Ernie will render him penniless, as Ernie is a known shark, and plans to steal Michael's business out from under him.
Shocked that Ernie has a predilection S&M, as well as a mistress at the office, Diana immediately leaves him, and confides in what she thinks is her best friend. Of course, Felicity soon takes advantage and moves in on Ernie. Just as Diana is served with divorce papers, Michael has the rug pulled out from underneath him and he is bitter. The divorce pretty much leaves her broke.
Shortly thereafter, Diana seeks him out for a reference. He gives her another chance, and soon the two become partners in creating education game software. After a few sleepless nights, the two become more than partners in the office, but because both have been hurt and are not ready to fully express the depth of their feelings, they part and start to see others. Diana meets up with a real estate mogul (which further enhances Michael's feelings that she is just after money); while Michael takes up with the trampy office secretary.
Ernie soon finds out about their enterprise and tries to ruin the two again - his feelings are that once he has knocked someone down, they need to stay there. Michael and Diana are ready for him this time. They soon start to question the chemistry between each other and try to come to terms with whether or not they want to be together once and for all, and whether it is for all the right reasons.
Okay at first but not enough to hold my attention.......2004-11-13
Okay, at first I was really enjoying this book. Diana Foxton is a British woman who got married to her husband just cause he is rich, and then it turns out he was cheating on her. Even though it was quite obvious, I mean she had to be really naive!! But after she left the guy the book went from Jackie Collins type sleazy to over the top Harrelquin type sleazy!! I mean all she and Micheal did besides build their business, is go to bed together. Other then that, what chemstry did they have??? It was also kind of fake how Ernie suddenly lost everything, I mean I know he was cutthroat and defintely had it coming, but how many cutthroat New York busiessmen really get what they deserve?? Plus, this book is just like a Jackie Collins novel, except it takes place in New York instead of Hollywood, is mainly about rich businessmen and their wives/girlfriends instead of celebrites, and there is no drug use. In other words, if you want a great steamy novel read Jackie Collins, the true author of that genre!
Bagshawe Does It Again........2004-01-15
I have read quite a few of Ms. Bagshawe's books and have to say that this one is my favorite so far. It's fun to read about how Beautiful, but bitchy Diana Foxton goes from the top of the food chain down to the very bottom and right back up again. The book is also packed with lots of steamy scenes describing the animal attraction between Diana and her business partner, sexy Michael Cicero. Overall, it's just a really fun way to pass your time; Ms. Bagshawe always keeps you wanting more and never disappoints.

Customer Reviews:
Wry, funny, philosophical.......2006-10-13
In a way, this collection reminds me a bit of "My Dinner With Andre," in that it also examines life from many angles, often through tiny details & absurd situations, while leaving the reader with much food for thought afterwards. It's also fascinating as a chronicle of the growth of the artist, following his work from its earliest days through nearly two decades. Enjoyable from the first, it grows in subtlety with the passage of time, delving into more serious material without losing its charm or sense of humor. Additionally, it's a delight to watch his development as an artist -- it's just amazing how much feeling he can put into the deceptive simplicity of his work!
I see that this is listed as Volume 1, so I can only hope that Volume 2 will be coming along eventually. Glenn Dakin is good company, a fine storyteller, and he'll leave you both amused & a bit wiser for the time spent with him. Highly recommended!
Excellent..........2002-12-04
This is just a great collection of comics from Glenn Dakin. It's cool to read about a cartoon character with such down to earth thoughts and feelings. If your curiosity has gotten you far enough to read this review, I would definitely recommend giving the book a shot.

The first was having a baby out of wedlock and then convincing herself that the only way to right that wrong was to marry her baby's father. Although the warning signs went off to deter her from making this decision, she forged ahead, a mistake that almost took away her self-esteem, finances, and most importantly her life. Take a journey through the pages of Nadia's life and see how she by the grace of God managed to pick up the many pieces of her broken life and was able to emerge victoriously.

All the Wrong Reasons.......2007-02-03
I loved it!!!! I bought several for gifts and LaQuinta graciously signed them for me. This is a must read for young people/male or female about relationships, heartaches, pains, growing up and letting go. Thank you Laquinta.
5 stars and more!!!!!.......2006-05-06
This book is actually outstanding! If you like soap operas, this one will have you pulled in and will have you feeling the character as if you are there going through the trials with her! Ms. Washington is a very talented writer and I believe strongly that she is the next Terry McMillan!
Emotionally riveting story.......2006-04-06
This is definitely a good read. A lot of true stories tend to be boring. This one, however, will pull you in, it will be hard to put down. The story is told very personably, like the author is there with you telling the story.
Very Good Book.......2006-03-03
I would have to rate this book as a good read. It shows the many challenges young women face in relationships. How one can go through many trying situations and still find their strength in God to make it through. Of course, I am some what bias because I wrote the book, but many people that have read the book expressed to me how much they enjoyed reading it.

Book Description
All the Wrong Reasons reveals the historical, political, and philosophical route which has formed today's government school system and argues for separating education from the state. It explains that the establishment of government schools grew out of nationalistic movements which took place in western culture during the nineteenth century due to the desire for freedom. The author discusses the major influences on the development of contemporary education including progressivist educational innovators such as John Dewey, Bronson Alcott, Leo Tolstoy, Friedrich Froebel, and Johann Pestalozzi as well as their predecessors in romantic philosophy Georg W.F. Hegel and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. She examines the collectivist philosophy, rooted in Marxism, present in the educational system and how these philosophies promoted self-absorption and self-revelation which have led to a coercive and monopolistic government school system.

Young marriage.......2004-03-17
Tish and Peter are a young couple who find themselves having to make a major decision when Tish becomes pregnant. Tish wanted to have a abortion, but Peter didn't so they get married. Peter has to get a job and take time out from college. The couple soon comes to realize that their marriage is not going to be easy. The book is good in that it shows people that marrying for a reason other than true love, is not always the right reason. I think the book is a little much as far as sexual content for middle school kids.
It was good........1998-12-07
This was a good book that I would recommend to anyone. It wasn't the best book in the world, but it was interesting. It wasn't boring at all. It is very realistic.
It's about a high school couple that had to deal with a baby.......1998-06-04
I extremely enjoyed reading this novel. It is very interesting and realistic. The novel included many of the topics a teenager can relate to. Also, by seeing how the main characters handle their bad situations, it can give guidance to a confused and scared teenager that may be faced with adult problems. Teenage love use to be innocent, but not anymore, and this novel proves it. Tish and Peter are the main characters in the book faced with reality. They are seventeen-year-old sweethearts that took things too far. Tish became pregnant and Peter refused to let her have an abortion. He proposed to her. They moved in together and Tish gave birth to a baby that they named Kate. Neither of their parents were supportive, so they both had to drop out of highschool to be able to make money, and college was just a "frustrated dream". I urge all young people to read this novel and to learn, learn from Tish and Peter's mistakes.

An extraordinarily disquieting read!.......2007-06-08
I finished this remarkable book several hours ago and I am afraid that it will stay with me forever; there are memories of events that will never leave me and I have no idea how the people actively involved in those events will ever outlive their memory.
Vietnam was my war; I was supposed to participate in it's patriotic overview but instead I grew enough between finishing high school in '65 and scoring a high number in the draft lottery in January of '71 (I think that date is right) to become 4F and miss the mental carnage of that terrible conflict.
How can any person forget the horror of the incidents chronicled in these 291 ages? And when you think you have read about the worst, along comes Arthur Woodley's story on page 236 and you enter a whole new world of actions you had tangetially read about in the main-stream media decades ago and here it is presented as a memoir of one of the guys who carried out some of those actions. I fully admit that I am not mature enough at 60 to read that these things happened to people so I have the Fates to thank for denying me the right to be a participant--the VC I could probably handle, breaking bread with these guys would been suicidal.
Anyone living through the Fifties and Sixties and even into the Seventies probably, could not avoid the heavy veneer of racism glued, seemingly permanently, to American society. It was a cancer that sapped the society of the very goodness that it so desired to demonstrate to the rest of the "uneducated and undemocratic" world. Any reader must, as I was, be struck by the horrendous racial slurs, both words and activities, in that "Christian" society; a scratch, regardless of how minute, would immediately open to view the putrefaction of this racism. I am reminded, again of Woodley's emotionally draining description of the American guy he had to shoot because the guy begged him to end his misery: there was no hope of medical treatment, he had already been suffering for several days before he was found and the maggots were eating his flesh while he was still alive. These maggots are a metaphor for the racism eating American society; at least however, the soldier knew what was happening but many, many Americans did not. This race question is a companion to the terrible story of war within these pages; it is the canvas upon which Terry has painted the tasles of these men fighting for "freedom."
In short, even after 23 years since publication, Bloods is a massively difficult read--attempt it only after a strong whiskey and the
fore-knowledge of what is to come as nthe book unfolds..
History As How We Should Read and Understand It.......2006-12-21
The book's title comes from the name black soldiers used to describe themselves - blood brothers - during the Viet Nam War.
Wallace Terry, who covered the war for Time magazine, interviewed 20 veterans of various backgrounds & ranks and let their experiences present to the reader a real history of the war. The individuals include a son of migrant farm workers to the son of an Army recruiter.
The powerful and moving interviews show the variety of emotions that drove each person; the injustices suffered on the battlefield and homefront, coupled with the emerging black power movement that was demanding permanent solutions to the institutionalized racism in this country.
The war was fought disproportiantely on the shoulders of those who did not have the political influence/savvy to use to their advantage the loopholes in the select service regulations. Sadly, the heroism of black soldiers continues to be skirted in "mainstream" history books and more than 20 years after Bloods was originally published.
No war - and especially the Viet Nam War - can be adequately described by someone simply researching documents many years later or from talking with politicos who sat behind desks that were thousands of miles away from battle. It is the living history from those who were casualties in so many ways - from the battlefield of war to the scars of racism - that loudly speaks the truth.
Right from the Brothers' mouths-.......2006-09-12
First off- these accounts aren't heavily fictionalized stories of what people stereotypically view as the Vietnam experience (war atrocity, drug use, etc.) they are honest accounts of men who lived in a tumultuous time, and were part of a marginalized part of society and yet chose to serve bravely, honorably and with dignity. These men are heroes and this is their story in their own words. For the reviewer who makes reference to the excellent "Stolen Valor" - if you had actually read both "Bloods" and "Stolen Valor" you would know that Mr. Burkett raised exception with only two of the stories presented in "Bloods"- he spent a scant three paragraphs questioning some of the details of these two stories. Mr. Terry has been adamant about keeping this book updated over the years and you will see numerous revisions. He has, as a matter of course, removed some of the accounts he now considers fabrications. If you find it repetitive, you may want to think about the fact that these men are all describing the same experiences. This is not the presentation of a doctorate submission that requires a bibliography- it is an oral history, told as best as people can remember- like any oral story there are going to be muddy facts. This book is an absolute must read for any African-American, enlisted and officer- in the Army. It shows how far we've come over the years and what out predecessors had to endure.
Unreliable.......2006-03-15
Terry makes numerous conclusions based on data that is either unreliable or taken far out of context. Also, several of the stories contained in this book are exaggerated and even complete fabrications.
I could not possibly recommend this book. However, if you do choose to read it, make sure that you also read Burkett's, "Stolen Valor."
A powerful contribution to the literature of Vietnam.......2005-03-30
"Bloods: An Oral History of the Vietnam War by Black Veterans," by Wallace Terry, brings together the voices of 20 veterans. The book includes, as Terry notes in his introduction, "Enlisted men, noncommissioned officers, and commissioned officers. Soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines." Also included are men who served time as prisoners-of-war. Altogether the time spent by these men in Vietnam spans from 1963 to 1973.
This is a diverse and compelling collection of personal stories. The men in the book held a wide variety of military jobs in Vietnam, among them rifleman, combat engineer, medic, interpreter, combat photographer, electronic warfare officer, armorer, combat paratrooper, and more. The veterans discuss many topics: racism, interracial friendship and bonding, receiving and recovering from wounds, wartime atrocities, and post-Vietnam life.
It's hard to pick out a few representative stories from this rich and rewarding collection, but I'll try. One man describes his work as an activist for incarcerated veterans after the war; another discusses becoming a champion amputee athlete after being disabled in Vietnam; another fondly remembers one of the war's military working dogs. Fred Cherry's graphic account of his suffering as a POW is devastating. Dwyte Brown's memories of the inland R&R spot-a "paradise"-make for an ironic and enjoyable contrast to some of the grimmer entries. And Sergeant Major Edgar Huff's chapter recalls not just Vietnam, but a Marine Corps career that spanned three decades.
Terry's text masterfully captures vernacular speech. I could really imagine these veterans speaking the words. The book also includes black-and-white photographs; a glossary of military terms, acronyms, and slang; and a chronology of the Vietnam War. Moving and powerful, "Bloods" is, in my opinion, an important contribution to the fields of African-American studies and military history.

Masterpiece of "oral history" -- the Souls of MACV grunts.......1999-10-12
This is simply the best book written by an American about war. Mr. Terry interviewed grunts who more often than not had been to Hell and the book captures the flailing, coughing evil of the place. Terry avoids the B.S. that goes with military ambition. His men were Black soldiers with no sense of "pro patria mori" and varying loyalty to the greater patriotic cause. This book is a dead-down opposite to William Manchester's "American Caesar," a first-rate biography of Douglas MacArthur, who is deservedly revered as a courageous soldier and brilliant general. Terry's "Oral History" reaches down into our humanity and finds a core of emotion that must have been with us when we lived in caves, fearing wild beasts. ****** The challenge is finishing "Bloods." Hell is impossible to visit; "Bloods" is as close as you're going to get. ****** This reviewer carries a VA "purple card."
An excellent testimony from brave, articulate fighting men.......1999-06-10
I have bought this book twice and through cross country moves I have unfortunately lost both copies. It is a true tradegy to me that it is out of print. It is a sterling example of bravery, discrimination, and heart in a "tell it like it is" format. It should be required reading.
Excellent! A life-restorer!.......1998-01-25
Racism in the American military helped to prevent American political objectives in Vietnam from becoming a reality. The enemy exploited white racism to the point it divided our forces and reduced our military ability to exert its full capabilities... too many Americans left the Constitution at home. "Bloods" tells it like it is. A superb collection. I applaud it.
