Book Description

* Displays innovative techniques for flower arranging * Over 200 photographs * Sakul Intakul has made floral installations for the Queen of Thailand * Sleek, contemporary, cutting edge design

Flowers have always been an integral part of the cultural fabric of Thailand and a constant reminder of the country's Buddhist heritage and identity. As in other Asian cultures, flowers are lavishly used in Thailand to mark rituals and rites of passage; they are indispensable in age-old acts of worship, in celebrations, and in daily life. On their way to work, many Thais offer flowers and a heartfelt prayer at wayside shrines. Every day, scores of women at the royal court create floral offerings for the venerated Buddha images in Bangkok's temples and palaces. Thai Airways routinely presents orchid corsages to female passengers.

This stunning and refreshingly original book goes beyond the everyday: it elevates flowers from mere floral arrangements to meditative floral "installations." Created from a combination of exotic and colorful tropical flowers, plant materials--fibers and leaves from banana plants and coconut trees, culms and twigs from bamboo--and unconventional materials like wire netting, harmoniously blend a strong, usually three-dimensional, structure with the sweet and subtle elements of flowers. The philosophy behind the arrangements, the interiors or occasions for which they are appropriate, and a brief explanation of the techniques and materials employed will inspire readers to create their own artistic arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars Tropical Colors.......2006-05-22

I own hundreds of books on all types of design. This book on design with tropical flowers is the absolute most beautiful I have. The ideas depicted in this book are very simple for the most part and easy to do. And yet, the designs create a spectacular effect.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Flowers.......2006-01-16

This book is a feast for the eyes. I stumbled on this book in a bookstore and was just mesmerized by the pictures. Beautiful exotic flowers in vivrant colors are arranged artfully in creative settings. Photography is brilliant.

      Book Description

Adele Dawson's classic guide to the seasonal use of herbs for food, drink, and medicine.

      • Clear directions for growing and using many wild and cultivated herbs.

      • Detailed pen-and-ink drawings help readers identify 70 herbs.

With irresistible enthusiasm and an endless store of knowledge about the plant kingdom, herbalist Adele Dawson traces the human-plant relationship through the seasons, providing practical and enlightening information about every aspect of herbalism, including spring foraging, summer gourmet gardening, the preparation of remedies in autumn, and the brewing of healing potions in winter. The mysteries of preparing infusions, decoctions, tinctures, and essences are unraveled through the author's clear and cohesive chapters on how to identify, collect, and preserve herbs. Detailed pen-and-ink drawings show the essential elements of flower and leaf anatomy as well as 70 wild and cultivated plants in their budding, blossoming, and dormant stages. Sprinkled throughout the text are recipes for impromptu wild feasts such as milkweed buds tempura, directions for soothing hand lotions of marigold and milk, and an enormous variety of medicinal and culinary teas. In equal measure an herbal encyclopedia, a health-food cookbook, and a nature guide, this book deserves a place on the reference shelf of both the new and experienced herbalist.

5 out of 5 stars Blessed Gardens loves Dawson's Herbs.......2007-09-04

Adele Dawson's "Herbs: Partners in Life" is a great garden companion. There is much detail on the art of gardening, cooking, and healing with wild plants. It serves itself up as a great read and a source for quick information.

I liked Dawson's voice. She conveyed much reverence--not only for the plants, but for the reader as well. I enjoyed the well-placed historical anecdotes, and came away feeling enriched.

One of my favorite stories centers around the 17th century pastor, Cotton Mather. During his time, if a woman was caught dabbling with herbs, she was accused of witchcraft and often hung or burned at the stake. However, Pastor Mather praised the 'gentlewoman' that kept a closet of 'harmless' herbs. He, himself, encouraged his congregation to chew on the 'Bible leaf' herb, costmary, because it had a stimulant effect and was often the only thing that would keep his listeners awake through his lengthy, and dare I say boring, sermons.

"Herbs: Partners in Life" brims with beautiful and detailed illustrations of each herb and flowering plant. Dawson also provides natural remedies for a spectrum of ailments from high blood pressure to bronchitis, with simple instructions and the occasional song or blessing.

Make "Herbs: Partners in Life" your partner in the garden, and start using wild plants to enhance your quality of life.

      3 out of 5 stars Good info.......2007-08-11

Some really good information here. Helpful suggestions with excellent photographs. However, this book becomes cumbersome to use simply because of the lack of a badly needed index. I would also like to see included some cautionary information about plants and pets.

      4 out of 5 stars A lovely little book.......2007-04-13

I came across this book at my local Costco. After flipping through it and noting the gorgeous photography I was mildly surprised that it was already selling at a warehouse, seeing that it was just published in late January. I hadn't heard of Jon Carloftis, but apparently his work has been featured in several magazines.

The photography is lovely--if you like the interiors pictured in Martha Stewart Living and Real Simple, you'll probably enjoy this book. Carloftis does a good job of explaining the light requirements of 60 fairly low-maintenance plants, which he helpfully breaks down into categories (low, medium, high) based on those requirements. He includes the ubiquitous golden pothos among his recommendations, but there were also many interesting and gorgeous plants I'd never heard of. I could easily see where I could outfit my whole house in greenery without going outside of his recommendations--and since I'm somewhat new to gardening, I may do just that.

The book is missing an index and a list of resources, so I docked a star.

I really enjoyed reading this book and am reading it again right now. I loved the recipes and the photos are great. Good reference book for those getting into the field of herbs, whether it be for growing or for crafting.

4 out of 5 stars Had to have one for myself.......2005-11-27

I bought this book as a gift, but had to buy two so I could keep one. It covers all the standard herbs in the standard way, but what stands out in this little book are the photos of some very creative uses for the herbs. The "cooking with herbs" section is also well done and I've actually used some of the recipes! The print is very small, but the typeface is clear and simple so that helps to keep it readable.

British florist Paula Pryke and photographer Kevin Summers have produced a stunning book of floral designs which is well worth owning. Amateur and professional floral designers alike will be charmed by the quality and variety of the photographs as well as the very readable and informative text. This book is a must-have for arrangers interested in new ideas.

The chapters center on specific flowers (e.g. orchids, gerbera daisies, roses) which is a unique approach.

The book would make a lovely coffee table book for those who just enjoy beautiful floral design photography. For those of us who take floral arranging seriously, it is an inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars The most artistic creative floral design book yet........1997-07-11

I have been reading and buying floral design books for years. Paula Pryke is the most creative imaginative artist I have ever seen in this field. And she shares all of her creative ideas and techniques with the reader. If I pick up this book and start reading it I cannot put it down! I lent both of her books Flowers Flowers! and Flair with Flowers to a friend who said the same thing! There is a flood of new floral decorating books out there and none of them can come close to these two books!

I have every victoria book ever published and this is the only one I did not like. Where were the flowers. I have a passion for anything with flowers on it, especially roses on fabric.I ordered this as part of an introductory offer to a book club and boy was I disappointed. There were hardly any flowers in the book. If you like the rest of victorias book you will not like this one. It was almost as if it were published by someone else.

There's useful information on china patterns that feature floral motifs and large photographs of colorful interiors utilizing various wall coverings.

          Book Description

A smart, authoritative, and comforting source for expectant mothers and their loved ones

"An outstanding blend of practical information and humor. Dr. DiLeo provides a wealth of useful information in a style that ensures a productive relationship between patient and physician. This book should be required reading for any patient who desires a "low stress" pregnancy. Dr. DiLeo's insight on pregnancy is so valuable my plan is to recommend this superb contribution to the literature to all of my patients."
--Douglas M. Montgomery, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., Chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans

"A wonderful, must-read book. Dr. DiLeo possesses an extremely rare combination of medical expertise, along with the ability to write in an informative and entertaining style, adding strong doses of compassion and wit. I've read just about every pregnancy book available, and many make great bedtime reading (as the medical jargon and dry writing styles often put you right to sleep). This book will not only keep you awake, you will be compelled to read it from cover to cover while you celebrate the miracle of your pregnancy with your favorite book and doctor. Dr. DiLeo is a wonderful person, an excellent doctor, and a brilliant writer. If only he could deliver your baby too!"
--Jeanine Cox, publisher and cofounder, BabyZone.com

"As both a surgeon and first-time pregnant woman, I had the privilege of reading this book from both perspectives. Dr. DiLeo provides a guide that interweaves the parent with the obstetrician, the philosophy with the physiology, and the practical with the miraculous. This book is nothing less than a complete celebration of pregnancy and childbirth, but with all the facts. An entertaining read! True to its title, my anxiety as a prospective mother has been successfully tamed by the perspective Dr. DiLeo instills into even the serious complications that are a part of any thorough discussion of pregnancy. The surgeon in me applauds an important, informative book. The mother in me finds great comfort in the perspective provided, and the woman in me had great fun reading such a charming and funny book about such a serious subject."
          --Elizabeth Kinsley, M.D., F.A.C.S.

"Dr. DiLeo's take on nutrition in pregnancy is right on. Finally, someone has decided to stop over-complicating the diet for normal pregnancy with ridiculous chapters on calorie counting that no one will follow. And finally, someone has decided to champion the role of nutrition and diet in complications unique to high-risk pregnancy. This is the pregnancy book that dietitians and nutritionists have been waiting for. And it's fun too. It's a book that's both delicious and nutritious."
--Diana Davis, L.D.N., R.D., licensed nutritionist, holistic Registered Dietitian, certified American Dietetic Association, national lecturer on nutrition and neuro-linguistics

As expectant parents--especially if you are first-timers--you know pregnancy is synonymous with anxiety. You and your partner require lots of hand-holding from your doctors, loved ones, and friends. Like a soothing cup of chamomile tea, a handy bedside reference, and your dream obstetrician all rolled into one, The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy is your source of must-have information, inspiration, and, of course, comfort, in the angst-ridden world of pregnancy.

Inspired by BabyZone.com, the number-one parenting website (more than a half million visitors a month)--and written by its obstetrical adviser, Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo --this friendly, fun, authoritative guide helps you separate fact from fiction, while calmly and rationally filling you in on common problems that may arise during pregnancy and how to deal with them.

          1 out of 5 stars Unfortunate.......2007-10-07

This is the kind of book for only a small segment of the population. Unfortunately this physician only sees birth as an emergency. In the process, he legitimizes all medicalization of birth. Indeed, he has a captive audience, since femininity is challenged and he is the savior each time.

The irony is that the outcomes of all his interventions for the normal, healthy mother and baby pair are not looked at since it is all over for him after the delivery. Too bad he is not able to visit postpartum and see why the anxiety occurs predictably due to the birth experience for the mother and baby.

I would not recommend this book to the general population---only high risk mothers.

5 out of 5 stars This is the ONE AND ONLY pregnancy book.......2005-07-15

After having my first child and avoiding chapters that scared me half to death (and then being unprepared for pre-eclampsia and a placental abruption)I felt reassured reading this book. Dr. Dileo calmly explains everything in layman's terms and makes me feel that, even if I were to have complications with my next pregnancy, those complications can be managed with good prenatal care.

FOR THE DETRACTORS....I had considered home delivery with my first pregnancy. Had I done so, I would not be here today. I WAS one of those people who he speaks of that is doing fine one minute and hemorrhaging uncontrollably the next.

Oh...and I'm lucky enough to call him my ob/gyn. He's as great in person as he is in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book out there.......2005-06-28

After having an ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage we definitely qualify as anxious. This book covers all the things you wanted to know and then some. Dr. DiLeo conveys these things in a manner which all can understand and helps you to figure out when to worry and when to go with the flow. Some of the other books out there we bought (of course) and this is now THE book I'm recommending to all my friends who are trying to conceive or are pregnant. I think this book will even make my ob smile as he's probably already muttered something about how anxious can they get.
          Great book - excellent information!

5 out of 5 stars Best Pregnancy Book I have Seen!!!!.......2004-10-08

I have read a couple pregnancy books and mostly they have caused unnecessary alarm and don't seem to touch on the questions and concerns that I have had.
This book COVERS EVERYTHING!! Every concern and worry that I have had has been addressed in a clear and percise manner. I had a m/c a little bit ago and there is an entire chapter about conceiving after a m/c.
His writing style is great and easy to follow and makes a VERY easy read while still providing exceptional factual information that has been very very helpful.
Some of the other reviews found his tone patronizing, however, I thought that it was the exact opposite. He talked to you like a good, very knowledgeble doctor that was caring and truly concered about his patients health and well-being.
I am very lucky that I have an OB that I really like and can makes the time to answer all of my questions, but after having a previous m/c I am constantly filled with worry over every little thing. Stuff that you can't call your doctor 12 times a day for, and this book was the solution. It has really helped to ease my mind and concentrate on my well-being instead of being consumed with worry.
I would recommend this to ANY pg women, especially one that has some additional concerns and worries.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for those that are really anxious.......2004-09-07

After losing a baby - I found myself at the top of the anxious parenting hill. Every little thing freaked me out. This book helped reassure me and also helped me learn more about what to really be worried about. Highly recommend it for those who are truly worried, but is probably not necessary for the normal pg woman.
