Book Description
Who hasn't gazed out a window and pictured the sumptuous meals, past and future, set in their own garden? With a trio of top food experts--photographer, writer and chef--enter a country garden and chronicle its life in the course of a year. A pictorial account of the garden as dining room takes us on a tour that begins with the chill remnants of winter, with earthy pleasures like truffle for tagliatelle; into the promise of spring with a potato, asparagus, and celeraic terrine; the glory of summer and the bounty it delivers for a sumptuous vegetable quiche...into a late, lazy visit to the "apple and mint" garden; and, finally, the chill of bittersweet autumn, complete with pot-au-feu or pumpkin soup. With scores of stylish table settings, this visual feast and treasury of exquisite recipes is a visit to a "dining room" not soon forgotten.

Rankin Redux.......2002-07-17
This is exactly the same book as "Creative Lighting for Outdoor Living"; only the title has been changed. There is something vaguely suspicious about re-titling the same text and illustrations to lure the unwary into a second purchase. That said, my earlier review stands but my opinion of Lark Books has taken a fall.

Book Description
Vermont is the home of The Cooks Garden, America's premier organic seed catalogue. Since 1984, The Cook's Garden has been the ultimate source for kitchen gardeners seeking European-style greens, heirloom vegetables, radiant flowers, and pungent herbs. Each winter more than one million eager gardeners await the arrival of The Cook's Garden catalogue, looking forward to reading about new seed varieties as well as reliable classics.
Successfully growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers is just part of any gardening challenge, but what do you do once they are harvested?
Ellen Ogder's recipes are one of the most delightful aspects of The Cooks Garden catalogue. As Deborah Madison, bestselling author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone and Local Flavors writes in her foreword: "These recipes, which are entirely guided by the garden and choice of seeds that grow in it, bridge the gap between a dream on a page promised by a seed packet and how the seeds can be used in the kitchen."
Ellen's recipes are simple yet elegant and speak of freshness whether you harvest ingredients from your own garden or select them at your local store -- flavorful soups such as Zesty Lemon Cucumber Soup and Brilliant Butternut Bisque, salad combinations such as Arugula and Roasted Pear Salad, and Leaf Peeper's Carrot and Red Cabbage Salad, main courses such as Savory Vegetables in Polenta Crust or Herbed Chicken with Cider Sauce. Too many tomatoes or pears? Ellen offers ideas for preserving the bounty of any garden.
Illustrated with full-color woodcuts by Caldecott winner Mary Azarian and packed with topics from Ellen's favorite culinary herbs to favorite autumn vegetables, From The Cook's Garden offers a yearround garden of culinary delights.

Useful book.......2007-03-08
This book was useful to me in some previous trips to Italy. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I wish the info was kept more current.
Good Guidelines.......2007-01-17
Bought this book to help me plan a New Years Trip to italy, and though it was helpful and interesting, I think I had better luck browsing around on the internet on sights like Venere and rick steves bulletin boards. The one thing i really did like is that she gives honest opinions about the hotels, and most of them were spot on. I would recommend this book as a baseline for finding hotels, but also look for reviews online.
It was also really nice that she has a range of price options, though most of them were a little over our budget. Good if you want to spend $150 and up a night, then it would be a really great book. Otherwise, stick to the Let's Go books.
Solid information, a little dated........2004-07-26
I picked this book up along with Rick Steves'. I've found Great Sleeps Italy to have many more choices, several being much less known and therefore a better bargain, and easier to get into. That being said, the book is from 2002, and a little dated. I've noticed several big price increases from what she shows and even a few hotels that appear to no longer be in existence. For $11 on this site though, it is worth it.
Excellent, personalized recommendations.......2004-02-11
Although Ms. Gustafson's series of books is now "Great" instead of "Cheap", they still contain valuable, personal reviews of relatively inexpensive hotels. The idea is not the cheapest spots (see the Let's Go series for those), but less costly hotels which give above-average value for the money. I've stayed at her recommended hotels in both Florence and Rome and found them exactly as described. You won't be disappointed unless you expect 4-star amenities in a 2-star hotel.
Book Description
Susie Coelho's down-to-earth personality and practical smarts about bringing beauty to life have won her millions of fans. Now, in Susie Coelho's Everyday Styling, she offers a liberating plan for infusing personal style into readers' home and gardens, often without spending a dime.
Susie's credo is that the most appealing spaces are usually not the most expensive or decorator-correct. Homes develop authentic personal styles the same way people do -- through creativity, change, and the process of living. But how do you develop your own sense of style? Susie will show you how to find it, define it, and put it to use. The secret is the Style File: She'll help you create a collection of looks you love (pictures, swatches of material, scribbled ideas), organized as a practical reference for every space in your home and garden. As you discover common threads and new possibilities, your own vision will start to take shape.
But do you have the time or the resources to bring this vision to life? As a wife and mother juggling the demands of family, career, social life, and community, Susie understands the obstacles -- and how to work around them. The aim is to start with what you already have, then rearrange, refresh, and add unexpected or missing elements to create a new look all your own. It's not formal decorating or landscaping according to someone else's rules; it's a personal process that Susie calls "un-decorating" -- or everyday styling.
Filled with gorgeous color photographs, styling how-to's and tips, and lots of inspiration, Everyday Styling helps readers on any budget wake up their homes and gardens while putting their unique thumbprint on everything they do. You'll be able to create a whole new look and mood -- using pillows or fabric to jazz up old furniture, displaying and highlighting favorite possessions, or redoing a living room in three different ways -- all in one day.
Moving outside, Susie offers tips on styling entrances according to the season, creating fantastic outdoor rooms for entertaining or play, and turning your yard into a garden of earthly delights. At every step, she helps you develop and draw on your most important resources -- your own imagination, creativity, and passion for living.
Whether you're entertaining friends, hankering for a new perspective on that same old bedroom, or just hoping to perk up your patio with colorful plants, Susie Coelho's Everyday Styling shows how easy it is to keep you home and garden looking and feeling fresh and alive every day. Her message is simple but universal: Keep creating. That's the joy of life.

ideas i'd like to implement.......2002-10-21
I've been watching hgtv endlessly since we begain serarching for a new home in the spring of 2002.
Now that we have purchased our dream home in beautiful upscale Rosedale Park Mi. we have a lot and a half of landscaping to negotiate in the spring. I have many ideas but am in a quandry as to what would be best for our taste, lifestyle and this jewel of a home we don't want to skimp on. Please give your expert advise or if possible; I think our home would be a wonderful location for your suprise gardener program.
Many of our neighbors are local Judges and City council people as well as law enforcement personel and educators. We want to upgrade this property w/an appropriate garden design.
Anxious to hear from you,

Really fun book w/ fantastic photos.......2002-09-09
I spotted this book at my local (store) ... As a fan of "Surprise Gardener", I had to take a look. I was amazed to find that Susie's home decor is *very* similar to the colors and style selections I've made in my own (albeit much more modest) home. I've also been keeping a style file for about 3 years now, and it's been very helpful. I bought the book, and have enjoyed it. I'm already planning on making the forsythia wreath for my front door (have been searching for just such a simple wreath).
Susie Coelho's Everyday Styling.......2002-06-12
I love the pictures and ideas, but mostly I loved Susie's approach to decorating. I found that I could re-decorate my house with things that I already had and didn't have to go out and spend a fortune to have a great looking place.
Everyday Styling made easy!.......2002-05-28
I love your show Surprise Gardener on HGTV and just bought your book, Everyday Styling. I'm having a dinner party in June and I just carry it with me everywhere!! It is jammed packed with fabulous ideas and I'm going to make your French Herb Chicken recipe. Thanks for making everyday styling simple and attainable!!!
Nice photos with little substance.......2002-05-21
This book has lots of attractive photographs but not much in the way of useful ideas. Unless readers happen to have the same furniture in their homes as the houses shown, they will be challenged to find examples that can help them improve their surroundings. The author tries but does not succeed in her effort to be viewed as a credible designer. The Use What You Have Decorating books offer a lot more value to budget-conscious readers who are searching for real decorating guidance.
Book Description
Dinner under the stars in a formal garden, a tea amid the roses, rustic breakfast in an Adirondack camp, a harvest luncheon . . . these are parties that celebrate the best that nature has to offer, paired with food and drink perfect for the surroundings. You know how much enjoyment and relaxation your garden brings you—why not share it with friends and family? Throughout
Garden Parties, Suzy Bales inspires fancifully fun parties that transform outdoor spaces into enchanting playgrounds for the senses—the plants, the decor, and the food intermingle to create truly memorable themes.
But
Garden Parties isn’t just a beautiful book for inspiration. It’s also eminently practical, with how-to instruction on prolonging the life of cut flowers, constructing wreaths, and using a birdbath as an hors d’oeuvres stand, as well as making edible treats such as candied petals, floral-decorated ice cubes, and flowers for salads and garnishes.
And
Garden Parties is packed with delicious recipes perfect for the occasion: the spring luncheon features the spring treasures Asparagus Bundles with Chives and Lemon Butter, Mustard and Garlic Grilled Butterflied Leg of Lamb with Fresh Mint Sauce, and Creamy Watercress Soup; the midsummer eve’s romantic dinner includes seductive Champagne Framboise, Seared Scallops on Rose Petals, and Blooming Salad. All the recipes are designed to utilize advance preparation, allowing you to greet and enjoy your guests instead of struggling with last-minute details.

Garden Parties shows you how.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring.......2007-02-12
I was looking for garden party inspiration for our wedding. This book gave me ideas and better still, a focus. I love the way it's broken into themed parties. You can pull a bit from each of them. Decor ideas. Great recipes included, some of which we tested and will serve for the reception. I'll be able to use this book not just for the wedding, but as a reference for inspiration for all parties...indoor included.
Stunning and Inspirational.......2004-04-21
Suzy Bales' Garden Party will make you want to, well, have a party. Michael Luppino's gorgeous photographs, coupled with Bales' clear, simple writing style combine to create a book in which fantasy can become reality and the beautiful is celebrated.
Some of the ideas presented are not new (for example, sugar coating flower petals) but are presented clearly and in an easy to follow fashion. But Bales really shines when she describes her own new concepts like the bird bath serving stand - it's a great idea that deserves the spotlight it receives. Every page holds an idea that someone who loves home entertaining will want to try. The recipes all work, to boot (not always a guarantee with cookbooks!).

The BEST!.......2005-12-07
I have to say, I have a fetish for cookbooks! This, however, does not mean I cook alot!! But this cookbook is set up so perfect! I love the photos of EVERY recipe. The ingredient list is easy to skim over and clear to the point directions. And the recipes are great! I made 3 of them over the Thanksgiving holiday/hunting season and all were a hit! I am trying two more over the Christmas holiday. I love that they have the amounts for large or small groups. I checked this book out of our local school library and am now going to buy it. Recipes you can use over and over! I am also making 3 of the recipes for my son's class dinner at school this week!!
I love the way it's set up.......2003-11-01
This book is great--there are pictures for every recipe, and amounts for making the recipe just for your family, or for a large gathering (ie. for 4 or 8). It's spiral bound inside the hardcover, which is nice. And the recipes are very do-able and sound really good (I just got it and haven't had a chance to make them all yet). My mom wants a copy too.

Understand your child without reading an ADHD reference.......2001-11-05
After 8 years of trying to understand my daughter, I found her in this book. I knew she thought differently, but all the professionals were stumped as to how to help her. I finally found this book and it was as if I saw my daughter for the first time. Not only did it identify her learning style perfectly, I was able to see how that learning style formed her personality and how she reacted, positively and negatively, to different situations. As a parent, that understanding has allowed me to be more proactive with her education and more patient in my parenting. I recommend this book to anyone, especially those parents or caregiving professionals who know there's more to their child than what is being seen.
Tremendous help in understanding my children.......2000-03-19
Until I read this book I just couldn't understand how to relate to my young son. Though I can't say that I agree with everything in this book, it was a huge help in learning how my son was figuring out his world. He learns through his eyes! My older son and I learn through our ears. I thought everyone did until I read this book. It is just as valid to learn through your eyes or your fingers or your movements as it is through your ears. Every parent and teacher should read this book.
Opened my eyes to my child's mind!.......1998-10-20
I picked up this book from an LLL meeting's private library, just for something to read for the month. I never imagined that it was going to change the way I looked at my child! In learning my child's thought pattern (and mine and my husband's as well) I not only discovered how he learns, but reasons for the ways he behaves. When reading the description of a typical person with my child's thought pattern, it was as though the author was describing my child exactly! I now understand such behaviors in my child as never having an appetite, not enjoying coloring, although he can very nicely, being able to memorize things he hears with seemingly no effort at all, talking and asking questions from the moment he wakes up untill he is asleep, and being timid about defending himself physically even when necessary. This book also enlightened me to the fact that my thought pattern and my son's will fit perfectly while I endevor to school him at home, as I enjoy talking and enlightening people, and he learns easiest through hearing. Never before has a book influenced my life in such strong and beneficial way. I have recommended this book to every parent I know, and strongly to those that have chosen as I have to educate their children at home. It is true that every child is smart in their own way and it is important to understand this in order to help each child learn to lead a productive life.
Must read for all educators and parents!.......1997-08-26
A "typing" scheme on how we learn (geared towards children). People understand things in differing ways not because of the intelligience but rather because of the process of how their minds work. This book is full of practical ideas to connect with children
