Book Description
Ever wondered how the monuments really looked in ancient Egypt? That is to say, how they were part of the natural environment, or more properly, how the natural environment was brought to the architecture? This is the first English-language book to go beyond the identification and classification of ancient Egyptian plants and discuss the gardens and gardeners of ancient Egypt. The book focuses on garden design, as evidenced by archaeological remains, written documentation on stone and papyrus, and visualization in models and paintings. It covers the entire history of Egypt, from Predynastic times to the Thirtieth Dynasty of Egyptian rule. When faced with the deserts of modern Egypt it is sometimes hard to realize how beautiful and lush this landscape once looked. In this beautifully written book, Alix Wilkinson brings back to life what the glorious greenery of a lost civilization. REVIEW: Wilkinson's The Garden in Ancient Egypt is both well-written and instructive, and is nicely illustrated with drawings and black-and-white and color photos...This evocative book will be read with gusto by the gardeners among us, and it will also be a handy reference book for anyone with an interest in seeing yet another-in this case living-dimension to the culture, history, art and architecture of ancient Egypt (KMT, Spring 1999)

excellent.......2000-08-29
In this book, the first to entirely cover the gardens of pharaonic Egypt, the author discusses their archaeological and botanical evidence. Paintings and sculptures of garden representations are also analyzed. Plants, orchards and groves are thoroughly portrayed. Well illustrated in black and white, this is an excellent book for both the general reader and scholars in need of information about Ancient Egyptian gardens.

An Amazing Resource for Nursing Moms
Although breastfeeding is the natural and healthy way to nourish your baby, it’s not always easy. Many new mothers are scared away from nursing because of difficulty getting started and lack of information about what to do when things don’t go as planned. In this fully revised and updated edition of The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, two of today’s foremost lactation experts help new mothers overcome their fears, doubts, and practical concerns about one of the most special ways a mother can bond with her baby.
In this comprehensive guide, Dr. Jack Newman, a leading authority on infant care, and Teresa Pitman, a La Leche League leader for more than twenty years, give you the facts about breastfeeding and provide solutions for the common problems that arise. Filled with the same practical advice that made the first edition a must-have for nursing moms, the new edition features updates on:
• Achieving a good latch
• What to do if your baby refuses the breast
• Avoiding sore nipples
• Ensuring your baby gets enough milk
• Feeding a colicky baby
• Breastfeeding premature and special-needs babies

NOT the best breastfeeding support.......2007-10-13
I am breastfeeding my 3-month-old. Almost as soon as I started reading this book I was aware of the author's condemnation of women who choose not to breastfeed. It was frustrating and discouraging to have to weed through the judgment in order to find the information I was looking for. I think there is a consensus that breastfeeding is the best type of feeding for a baby - even Nestle and other companies that sell formula admit this. When a woman reads a book like this, she is trying to learn how to nourish her baby through breastfeeding and doesn't need to be sent the message that she has failed her baby if breastfeeding is not for them.
The process of learning to breastfeed can be highly stressful, and a book with this much "anti-anything-else" opinion was honestly too much for me to handle. I've even tried rereading it since my baby and I became comfortable and successful nursing in case I was being oversensitive when he was first born, but still found it to be too discouraging.
I gave it two stars rather than one because the book does contain some useful information, but I would not recommend this book to any new mother.
The Very Best Breastfeeding Book.......2007-08-27
My son is 5 months old and we didn't get the hang of nursing for at least 14 weeks. First we had poor latch and nipple confusion. Then we dealt with foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and three rounds of thrush. I went to LLL meetings and 3 lactation consultants, but this book was the ultimate resource guide for dealing with thrush and block feedings for the foremilk imbalance. I couldn't have done it without Dr. Newman, and now I give this book as a shower gift to every pregnant woman I know. Practical, straightforward and HELPFUL. The book to get when you feel like every book you read isn't helping your nursing problems.
The Best Breastfeeding Book.......2007-06-27
I have read several books about breastfeeding in preparation to be a postpartum doula and just to educate myself while breastfeeding my son....and this is the most informative and factual that I have found. Dr. Newman is the expert about breastfeeding. This book felt like a personal consult with him.
I have spent lots of hours in breastfeeding support groups and have heard lots of questions and problems...and all of them are answered in here. Dr. Newman is a strong advocate of breastfeeding and provides information, support and encouragement to nursing mothers and those supporting them. Some people may find him judgmental, but breastfeeding is better than formula-feeding, no doubt about it. This book will tell you why it is best and how to do it.
Book full of Information.......2007-05-10
This book helped me a lot!!! I didn't breastfeed that long for my first child, but after reading this book, I'm going to breastfeed my second child as long as I can.
The Definitive Guide to Breastfeeding.......2007-03-03
This book is absolutely the best resource I have seen on the subject of breastfeeding. Dr. Newman offers a vast array of information from basic how-to and troubleshooting to social issues and lactivism. He even calls out big pharma on their UN-baby-friendly marketing techniques. All babies deserve to be breastfed and all women deserve to be supported in fulfilling that need. Newman provides enough info to make breastfeeding practical. This book gives woman a break (you don't have to be a virginal saint to breastfeed) and dispells hundreds of myths and misinformation that keep many woman from breastfeeding or continuing to breastfeed. Highly recommended.

Essential reference book for breastfeeding counselors.......2007-02-28
This is *the* book to have if you are a breastfeeding counselor; it is the first one I reach for whenever a nursing mother calls for help. The information is well organized, making it easy to quickly locate topics. Quick facts are bulleted to the side of main entries, and the information provided on each topic is comprehensive and well researched. Each chapter contains a bibliography, with lists of publications for parents and references for counselors.
This book has been worth every penny, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who works with breastfeeding mothers.
The Breastfeeding Answer Book.......2006-03-09
I have read a few breastfeeding books and resources in the past few years. I am a mother of four children, all of whom have been breastfed. I can say without a doubt that this book is AWESOME! It has more information and more detailed answers than any other book, resource, or class that I've seen. I highly recommend it to anyone who is breastfeeding or considering breastfeeding. It's a really great book!
Answers all your questions!.......2004-10-15
I loved this book! I bought this when having difficulty nursing my second baby. After having experience with nursing, I was surprised after 8wks and visiting with a lactation consultant (which cost me $75) I was still having discomfort. I found this book to be a great resource!
Very useful, though hard to navigate.......2004-04-30
This is a very good reference book for anyone who works in the field of lactation. It is not a book that you should read cover to cover; instead, it is a reference tool.
One downside to this book is that the index leaves a lot to be desired. It is not complete and it is poorly organized. Yes, it is in alphabetical order, but the words they indexed are often not helpful. I generally find I have to go through the TOC to find what I need - something a bit backwards from other reference material.
Other than that, this is well worth the money.
Required resource for lactation counsellor students.......2004-01-04
Having reviewed more books on lactation than I can list, the breastfeeding Answer Book stood out as the best book for both students and practitioners. The information is easy to access and is set up so that you can use it quickly.
This book is required for several programs at the Global Birth Institute and tends to be out of stock often. If you see the book listed, don't hesitate to order it.

There's a huge difference between "natural" and "easy"--just ask a woman who chose natural childbirth! Breastfeeding is certainly the most natural option for feeding your little one, and repeated studies have shown its nutritive value. But that doesn't make it easy, and not all medical practitioners are trained to answer questions about the process. In The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, authors Jack Newman and Teresa Pitman have assembled a mass of real-life stories from their clinical experience, and with their straightforward, helpful advice, you'll be breastfeeding successfully in no time.
Divided into three main sections, the book provides new information about why breastfeeding really is the healthiest option and where you can find good, hands-on help locally. Later chapters deal with feeding-related issues like sleeping patterns, babysitters, and when to wean your baby--the authors strongly believe in long-term (through toddlerhood) breastfeeding, a slightly different approach than many working moms may prefer. The majority of the book falls under the section "Common Problems and Solutions," and this is where to turn for advice on everything from breast refusal to slow weight gain. Special topics like illness or medication in mom's system are dealt with in detail, as are sore breasts, colic, and premature or low-weight babies. The chapter covering unusual situations, such as breast surgery and adoption, emphasizes the possibilities rather than the difficulties, and offers advice on the use of hormones and finding a breast-milk bank. Ending with four pages of resources on everything from Web sites to hospitals, you'll find the answers you've been looking for in this unique guide. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Great Book Gives You A Different view from other BF Books.......2007-10-04
I was told about this book from a BF Group I am a member of. I was intrigued by some of the Author's views because some of them are very different than other BF books I have read. After reading his book I feel empowered and liberated from the typical sterotypes placed on BF moms. The Author takes his many experiances from around the world and puts what should be a natural event in a woman's life into perspective. BF is a difficult journey for many women and this book will help you with BF, starting solids, multiples, and tandum nursing. He also talks in detail about formula and formula companies, Details that I had no idea about formula. You won't be sorry you got this book!
A down to earth approach.......2007-07-09
After reading through several other breast feeding books, not to mention many online searches, this is the one that became the breastfeeding bible for me. Highly recommended for any pregnant or new moms. I had problems nursing my baby for 6 weeks but eventually we got the hang of it, thanks to this book and a local La Leche League leader (ladies if you are in pain call your local LLL - especially if you are close to quittting!!!). AND you can email Newman at his website as well for advice! One of the best things about this book for me was the confidence it gave me that I could feed my baby and that I didn't have to follow a litany of rules or be perfect in order to do that. He reminds you that women are and have been breastfeeding their babies for millenia...and helps open your mind to a way of mothering that is more natural and instinctive as opposed to the more 'traditional' way that basically involves trying to control your baby through scheduling.
Excellent Book for Logical Thinkers.......2007-05-21
I thought this book was wonderful! I'm not trying to offend anyone with my title for this review, but I found this book to be very logical, precise, and to the point. I tried reading "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding", but found it wasn't for me. I needed someone to break it down for me and I feel like Dr. Newman and Teresa Pitman do that very well in this book.
This book was very reaffirming for me. It caused me to really think about what doctors and friends were telling me. I got a lot of wrong information about breastfeeding and this book really opened my eyes and caused me to really think about what these people were saying.
I completely disagree with the negative reviews about this book being too harsh, preachy, and biased. Of Course it's biased and pro breastfeeding! It's a book about BREASTFEEDING! Also, some of these reviews make it sound like he has a hidden agenda. Guess what ladies, he makes his agenda known throughout the book so it can't be hidden. He is pro-breastfeeding and not afraid to say it throughout the book. I found it very refreshing.
K from Virginia.......2007-05-13
Dr. Jack Newman's book is a must read for every pregnant woman and new mother. My midwife recommended it to me and it has been a wonderful guide even as I breastfeed my third child. Dr. Newman's information is thorough and his style is warm and witty. I also appreciate a book that normalizes when so much of the information we receive today warns us that something is wrong. Thank you Dr. Newman!!!

Customer Reviews:
Very good resource.......2007-03-27
I've used this book a TON at work with breastfeeding moms. (I work in a Neonatal Intensive Care environment). I also bought it to use for review for the IBCLC exam. It's not the only book I own but I'm glad I have it. It contains more information than the "average" mom may want, but it sure gets borrowed a lot! It's easy to read for "lay people" or professionals and has a lot of practical information. Love the spiral bound copy so it will lie flat. When it says "LLL" you know it has to be good. I do wish it contained more pictures.....if so, I'd give it five stars.
Your Breastfeeding Questions Answered.......2005-06-14
I purchased this book after I began my journey to becoming a lactation consultant. Though I never read the book from cover-to-cover, I have covered nearly every page (some pages over and over!) over the last several months in my effort to support nursing mothers within the LLL philosophy. The information in this book is thorough and simply written, though at times I have considered it poorly organized. The BF Answer Book is probably the best book for helping breastfeeding moms. I hope to continue to learn from this book as I explore it's pages while providing support and information to mothers who need it.
If you are a medical professional who treats or consults nursing mothers... this book is a "must have" for your professional shelf!
