Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Should be called the Compact Tractor Primer.......2007-07-13

I was mislead by the title and believe that this book should more accurately be called the Compact Tractor Primer instead of "Bible". The scope of info is large but the depth is shallow. The writing is excellent and the material is presented in a very readable manner, but being new to owning a tractor I was looking for an in depth reference that went well beyond my owners manual. I was disappointed that this book spent most of it's pages exploring an extremely wide variety of small farm, landscaping and construction machinery and less time examining the maintenance and use of what most people consider a "compact tractor", i.e.: a mini tractor with a PTO and 3 point hitch. If you don't know what's available or exactly what you need for your small scale task you may find this book helpful. This thin book took me an evening to skim the relevant paragraphs and will end up at the local book store for sale.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know about Small Tractors.......2007-04-04

Power, price, performance, and design of various small tractors are discussed and compared. Informative photos explain each model's pros and cons.

5 out of 5 stars Specifics key to understanding the pros and cons of each........2007-02-03

The small tractor is here defined as under 75 horsepower and there are nearly a hundred brands of compacts offered in North America - with accompanying variations in style and presentation. Any who would use a small tractor will appreciate the clear insights of The Compact Tractor Bible: it surveys power, design, price, and performance levels and offers up everything from safety assessments to operating costs. Color photos and diagrams also cover mowing specifics and operations and use, giving the would-be owner specifics key to understanding the pros and cons of each.

For years the talented folks at the Muppet Workshop have been turning out characters that are adored the world over. And it seems the Muppeteers are also quite adept at making friendship quilts to mark special occasions among their extended family. From this tradition has sprung Quilting with the Muppets, a celebration of Muppet characters and the humans who create them. Each of the 15 quilt block projects features a different Muppet, with brief directions for reproducing it in fusible appliqué. The quintessential furriness and dimension of the puppets read instantly in many of the blocks as shown, made as they are with fake fur and sculpted foam, but since the very basic instructions explain only flat appliqué, some readers may be disappointed. Still, the personalities of Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Oscar, Big Bird, and the rest of the gang shine through clearly even when rendered in simple fabric form, and Muppet enthusiasts will enjoy having good templates of the characters. The book's second half documents about two dozen of the delightful friendship quilts made by the Muppet artists. --Amy Handy

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-07-29

There are some good ideas in this book, but many projects were not completed with a few simple sketches or explanations. Also too many of the projects were useless ideas. I also bought one for my daughter and she came to the same conclusion as I did. She said "Dad I think you wasted your money".
I think a thoughtful rewrite of this book would make it a winner as both my daughter and I have seen many other good uses for PVC pipe.

5 out of 5 stars Over a hundred projects constructed from PVC piping.......2005-04-10

PVC pipe is a cheap, versatile material which is easy to work with and thus lends to home and garden projects, but until now there hasn't been a single source focusing on PVC as a foundation for such projects - enter Charles A. Sanders, who presents over a hundred projects constructed from PVC piping. From gutter cleaners to containers, racks, and holders, The PVC Project Book: 101 Uses for PVC Pipe in the Home, Garden, Farm and Workshop packs in practical project applications.

      4 out of 5 stars Ignore DLA2's review!.......2005-03-28

This is a really good book. I don't know why DLA2 reviewer was so negative. He complains because the book is simple and easy to understand? hey, building with PVC pipe is not rocket science! Sanders includes many useful designs and all info that is needed to build them. While not as good (it IS good, just has a narrower appeal) as his previous book, The Self Reliant Homesteader, PVC Project Book is well worth the purhcase price, and a solid second book for the author.

1 out of 5 stars Save yourself the trouble..........2005-02-10

This may in fact be the worst book I've ever purchased.

Fully 80% of the 'projects' are "cut a piece of pipe, put a cap on it, and place it over something sharp" The other 20% are "cut a piece of pipe, put a cap on it, screw it to the wall and put things in it"

The 'furniture' portion of the book (which is what I was really after) says "pvc furniture is so popular that you should check your local hardware store for specialty joints and designs"

There are /no/ scale drawings/plans, just the occasional drawing of a piece of pipe with a cap on it.

I was unable to find anything in this book that was useful to me, and nothing that was any more complex than 'holder' or 'cover'.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bonsai Book!!.......2005-11-09

I was mostly...unimpressed by the bonsai books you normally find in a book store, so I asked my mentor(world famous) for a good suggestion for a book. He suggested this book. I went out and bought it. It is so easy to understand. It made the hardest stuff seem easy. It put everything that would seem extremely difficult into words even a beginner could understand. I used this book to save a tree that was almost killed by Hurricane Katrina! Using this book I still havn't lost a single tree.

        5 out of 5 stars IT I S IRREPLACABLE FOR ME.......2004-10-03

After many starts which led to complete disasters for me, this book finally gave the information I need to get started in this wonderful art. The instructions are great for a beginner like myself. The combinaiton of written, step by step direcitons along with the wonderful photographs makes this book a joy to work with. I cannot say if this is a good book for the advanced student, as I am far, far from that category, but I can say without a doubt that it is great for beginners. It certainly answered all of my questions. This book was far better than any other I purchased on the subject! Thank you SO much Mr Gustafson!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Beginners.......2004-08-26

Interested in bonsai but clueless on where to begin? This book makes an excellent starting point. It clearly and concisely explains the basic "rules" - which the author advises the reader to learn, practice, then feel free to ignore as their confidence and creativity take over. Every basic area, from tools to pots, from soil to common plant choices, are explained and illustrated with hundreds of drawings and color photographs. If you decide to truly pursue the art of bonsai this book alone will not be enough - you will need to draw upon other books and build a resource library. But, for your first introduction to the hobby, I highly recommend this "workshop".

4 out of 5 stars Very well written book.......2001-11-27

The book is very well done and informative. Technically, I don't think I'd call this book for the total beginner as it doesn't go into a lot of detail as to types of trees. It does briefly mention types of trees that work as bonsai, but doesn't give care sheets and the like found in some other bonsai books. The workshops are good in the book, however, it would have been better if the formatting was not so confusing. You tend to see pictures either before or after the text and that does cause some consternation. All things considered though, this is a really helpful book and one definitely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars great for beginning to intermediate levels.......2001-10-09

this is a great way to get someone into bonsai. herb gustafson, in this and his other books, does a great job of walking through different necessities (food, light, watering, tools, etc.) and techniques using several examples. he also gives information without seeming biased towards one style or type of plant, but shares all with the reader. definitely worth getting, even if you're not sure about getting into bonsai.

This book has information on everything from blueing metal and gun smithing to making soap, making soda pop or a still, medical remedies for wart removal, the gout and so much more (the medical advice is quaint at best and dangerous at worst - it's home remedies from a simpler, less informed day). Whether you are a do it your-selfer, a survivalist, or enjoy reading about how it was done in the old days you can not go wrong with this book. A copy of this book and The Foxfire Book and you are good to go.

Yet the simple inventions described for doing everything from managing young bulls to protecting drain outlets can be just as useful for today’s farmer as they were for the homesteaders of over a century ago. Discover how to make such items as a movable nest for hens, a ribless boat, a contraption to extricate a mired animal, a farm cart with adjustable racks for larger loads, a wire fence tightener, a fruit picker, a grindstone set and frame, and much more. This book is a boon for the rancher, farmer, or anyone who loves the rural life.

Cultural historians have long been intrigued with how such cultural treasures as impressionism, psychoanalysis, and the New School of Music could flourish in the depleted soils of fin-de-siècle Vienna--and, not very far behind, Budapest--at a time when the empire was exhausted and eroding. "Was this culture inspired by the 'slight rapture of death,'" asks cultural historian Péter Hanák, "or was the whole structure void of a foundation and its glitter nothing more than a mirage?" The period prior to the First World War was indeed a golden age, albeit wobbly.

The formal tone and well-organized presentation of these essays conceals a sprightly diversity of themes. What thread can possibly link the fin-de-siècle perception of death, popular letters of social grievance, and the worldwide success of the theatrical genre common to both cities--operetta? It is the author's concept of cultural history that provides the thread. Hanák's focus is not trained on cultural masterpieces, but on the "real world" of urban mass culture and the cultural products of peasants.

The theme of urbanization, dealing with all major areas of cultural history, opens the study. Chapter 2 looks at the development of prejudice in this Central European cauldron, analyzing anti-German and anti-Semitic images. The impact of politics on the cultures of both cities gives this work its title essay. Vienna would be characterized by the image of the garden; Budapest, with its factories and café culture, is characterized by the "workshop" conceit. The great upheavals of the century's end would be played out in a field of opposites.

The final chapter offers a unique subject of inquiry--the letters written by ordinary soldiers during the First World War allows Hanák to examine the social perceptions of the lower classes and chronicle the shift toward the culture's revolutionary mood.

This scholarly work, presenting as it does a specific historical moment, will appeal to the cultural historian eager to learn more about Hanák's themes presented through an original point of view. --Hollis Giammatteo

          Book Description

A century ago, Vienna and Budapest were the capital cities of the western and eastern halves of the increasingly unstable Austro-Hungarian empire and scenes of intense cultural activity. Vienna was home to such figures as Sigmund Freud, Gustav Klimt, and Hugo von Hofmannsthal; Budapest produced such luminaries as Bela Bartok, Georg Lukács, and Michael and Karl Polanyi. However, as Peter Hanák shows in these vignettes of Fin-de-Siecle life, the intellectual and artistic vibrancy common to the two cities emerged from deeply different civic cultures.

Hanák surveys the urban development of the two cities and reviews the effects of modernization on various aspects of their cultures. He examines the process of physical change, as rapid population growth, industrialization, and the rising middle class ushered in a new age of tenements, suburbs, and town planning. He investigates how death and its rituals--once the domain of church, family, and local community--were transformed by the commercialization of burials and the growing bureaucratic control of graveyards. He explores the mentality of common soldiers and their families--mostly of peasant origin--during World War I, detecting in letters to and from the front a shift toward a revolutionary mood among Hungarians in particular. He presents snapshots of such subjects as the mentality of the nobility, operettas and musical life, and attitudes toward Germans and Jews, and also reveals the striking relationship between social marginality and cultural creativity.

In comparing the two cities, Hanák notes that Vienna, famed for its spacious parks and gardens, was often characterized as a "garden" of esoteric culture. Budapest, however, was a dense city surrounded by factories, whose cultural leaders referred to the offices and cafes where they met as "workshops." These differences were reflected, he argues, in the contrast between Vienna's aesthetic and individualistic culture and Budapest's more moralistic and socially engaged approach. Like Carl Schorske's famous Fin-de-Siecle Vienna, Hanák's book paints a remarkable portrait of turn-of-the-century life in Central Europe. Its particular focus on mass culture and everyday life offers important new insights into cultural currents that shaped the course of the twentieth century.

5 out of 5 stars The Blessing Of The Skinned Kness.......2007-08-05

Simply the best parenting book I've ever read. Straightforward, simple and addresses every issue I've ever had with my kids. Intuitive and funny.

4 out of 5 stars Some good advice from a Jewish lady.......2007-07-21

This book is very good, in general. There are some unimortant things that the author feels we need to hear about anyway. But still, for everyone who has children, or is intereted in parenting, it is quite a helpful book. I personally do have desire to learn from any book that can teach me something different or make me look at things in a different way. I'm not Jewish yet I felt there is a lot to learn here from the Jewish tradition. Mostly, it is the simplicity which is mixed together with divinity that I find is a very interesting and positive concept. I do recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Take the time.......2007-07-06

I read this book when it first came out - read it once, twice, probably 3 times. The guidance here really helped get me through some challenging pre-teen years. My children (now older teens and college age) have all turned out better than I could have ever imagined! Parenting has a lot to do with following a clear path with frequently discussed values and clear expectations/consequences. I hope Wendy's messages continue to reach a lot of people.

5 out of 5 stars A very good parenting book .......2007-06-28

The overwhelming majority of readers of this book I know of have found it to be a wise, practical guide to better parenting. They found it replete with ways of making their child more respectful, self- reliant children as preparation to becoming better and stronger human beings.
There was only one person whose negative criticism raised a question in my mind, and this in regard to the authors' treatment of children who suffer special disabilities.
In any case I found that there was already a certain wisdom and direction in the way the contents of the book are structured. The reader opens with a chapter on the way she changed her whole practice of counseling children. She then has a chapter teaching parents how to accept the special character of their children. Her idea is basically that we should not simply take children as if they are blank slates in which parents write out their own needs and wishes. But rather each is a unique human being whose special qualities we must understand and help develop in a way best for them.(This accords with the traditional Jewish saying "Educate the child according to its nature") She too teaches the danger of over- protecting children. This is the focus of the title- chapter on the blessings of a skinned knee. She then considers the whole question of how we can find in ordinary decisions sparks of spirituality . She goes on to talk about the blessing of longing , and how important it is to teach children gratitude for what they have received. One of the main messages of the book is teaching children to overcome that kind of mentality in which they are perpetually hungry and dissastified, always looking selfishly for the next treat they can get. Mogel aims to teach parents how to teach Moderation in regard to physical demands, and appreciation for Good received. This connects up with the chapter in which she deals with the traditional Jewish terms for motivation ( Yetzer Hara- The Evil Impulse) and how children need to be taught how to use their drives in a beneficial way . She also speaks about Moderation in relation to food . In her last chapters she moves to more purely spiritual considerations, and teaches how parents should help in teaching their children Faith in God.
While much of the Teaching here has its basis in traditional Jewish teachings about raising children it is clear that the work has a universal meaning and application.

5 out of 5 stars Theology for every day.......2007-06-19

What I loved most about this book was the way in which the author marries theology with the nitty-gritty of everyday parenting decisions. The payoff for me personally has been a sense of joy, freedom and confidence as I rear my son. Mogel isn't only out to save kids' spirits or turn up the butane under the reader's observance of Judaism (I suspect that if I were Jewish, this book would have had such an effect on me); she wants to make parenting fun again, and she succeeds brilliantly. Witty, readable, and profound, this book is a real treasure. Don't miss it.
