The Poetics of Gardens
ASIN: 0262132648 |
Book Description
The Architecture of Western Gardens presents an international tour of garden design from the Renaissance to the present. As object and as literature, it is a sumptuous and unprecedented resource. The more than seventy essays by scholars from Europe and America all commissioned for this book - and over 650 illustrations raise the standard of garden literature to a new level. The result is an invaluable compendium that will serve as a fundamental starting point for exploring the many expressions of the place where nature and culture, project and diversion, work and pleasure meet.
Organized chronologically, the essays and illustrations make up a mosaic of the garden in the Western world. The humanist garden in Renaissance Italy, the concepts of the "Sublime" and the "Picturesque," mazes, grottoes, and other curiosities, city parks, American land art, and even Disneyland are among the topics treated. Discussions of characteristic aspects of history and theory are followed by analyses of individual gardens as paradigms of their type: the Hortus Palatinus in Heidelberg, the Parc Monceau in Paris, the Park Güell in Barcelona, Stowe in England, and many more.
The illustrations are a model of how iconography can function as text. They include ground plans meticulously redrawn from original archival material to provide precise information on the scale and nature of many of the projects, as well as a wealth of drawings, reconstructions, paintings, and photographs.
Monique Mosser is Ingénieur at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris. She is an art and architectural historian, specializing in the study of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in France and elsewhere, and also teaches garden history at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure du Paysage in Versailles, regularly taking part in restoration schemes for historic gardens. Georges Teyssot is Professor of History of Architecture at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice and a Visiting Professor at the School of Architecture, Princeton University.

A Real Treasure For Grandchildren.......2007-09-13
This book allows you to easily leave a legacy for grandchildren. Can include generic info such as geneology, as well as very personal memories/reflections and lots of space for those special pictures you hope would never be lost. It is truly a way to give a gift of love.
Wonderful gift!.......2007-07-11
Having a copy myself, I searched to find another for a newly 'grandmothered' friend- She loved it!
Grandmother Remembers.......2007-07-06
Great book and project for giving to your grandchildren. I have completed one book and plan on filling others. A nice gift for a new grandmother.
special keepsake. .......2007-05-13
My mom bought this book for my grandma to fill out for me when I was a baby. (1983) My grandma liked it so much that she bought six more over the years for my siblings and cousins. She added in as many photos as she could fit and some of the little pictures I drew for her when I was a kid. This book really means a lot to me.
Good Book.......2007-04-12
Good book. I order several for grandparents and great-grandparents. It is hard to find this kind of book. This is the best one I have found so far.
Book Description
This keepsake journal makes it easy for grandparents to share the richness of their lives by drawing out recollections of travel and romance, family and friends, dreams and special places, and more. With photo pages at the beginning of each chapter and a pocket at the back to store letters, recipes, or other treasures, grandparents can now give grandchildren a gift that's everlasting.

Very Creative.......2007-09-04
This book was great! It was full of questions that I would probably never think to ask my grandmother and the book is not cheap in any way. Aside from questions and answers there are envelopes inside the book and also slots at the end of each little chapter for pics. It's really a neat book and I think my grandmother will enjoy reliving old memories while filling in this book. It will be a good read for me someday as well. I wish I could have given one to my great grandmother before she starting forgetting things.
Nice book but not what I was looking for.......2007-02-14
I had gone back and forth trying to find the best book to have my parents fill out for my new daughter and I settled on this one. Most of the books are for one individual to fill out. I got confused with all the books I was looking at and purchased this one thinking that it was for both grandparents to fill out together however it is not. It is a nice book and the grandparents are going to try to fill it out jointly, however it is not easily set up for that.
Memories for My Grandchild.......2006-07-18
The book has tons of space to put family information and pictures.
the only problem is it will take me a year to complete the project!!! But when it is done it will be a wonderful keepsake for both my grandchildren. I bought on copy and when I saw how nice ist was I oreder another.
Add this book to your Baby Registry!.......2006-05-16
My wife and love this book. The book's thoughtful questions lead you effortlessly through the process of creating your own family documentary. Now that we're parents-to-be (4 more months and counting), we can't wait to give it to our own parents/soon-to-be grandparents. A must-have addition to every baby registry!
A perfect baby gift.......2005-07-23
I just got 2 copies of this for my friend's new baby... or, rather, for the baby to "give" her grandmothers. Most of the other gifts my she received are things that she will grow out of, but this is one she'll have forever. It's amazing how the stories have engaged her whole family! The book is beautiful - I'd recommend it to anyone lucky enough to have grandparents with them.
Book Description
An ingenious "fill-in-the-blanks" album for Grandfather to complete. When finished and given to his grandchild it contains his likes, dislikes, wedding picture, happiest memories -- and more. Lighthearted color illustrations throughout.

Great new grandparent gift.......2007-05-28
I am at the age where so many of my friends are having their first grandchild, and I want to do something special for them. This book is it!
my favorite.......2007-05-24
I looked at several grandparent memories books at a bookstore. I thought this one was the most modern and had the best remembrances that I want my child to know about her grandparents.
Dated style.......2007-02-14
This was published in the 1980s and it has a dated look and feel to it. I returned it.
I love it!.......2007-01-16
This was a great Christmas gift for my grandpa, and it was delivered well in advance. Thank you!
This is our third time around for this excellent book.........2007-01-15
When our first grandchild was born, I received a grandmother gift: a copy of this book's companion (Grandmother Remembers). I was so pleased with it that I looked for a similar book for my husband, and was delighted to find Grandfather Remembers. For each succeeding grandchild, I have bought a new pair of these books. We take our time filling them in, and present them to the grandchild at a time when the child will personally enjoy them. (The reason I bought only one this time is that the one my husband was working on got damaged.) These excellent books can be filled in briefly or in minute detail (which is the way we do). We have enjoyed the process in each case, and our two eldest grandchildren (22 and 16) do treasure them. This pair was a special "Sweet Sixteen" gift for our granddaughter. The earlier pair was a Bar Mitzvah gift for our grandson. We have one more pair, which we'll work on in a leisurely way for our 7-year-old grandson, to be given at a future date.
Book Description
Today’s grandmothers lead full and active lives that include everything from working and traveling to taking classes and volunteering. But that’s no surprise. Through the years, they have enjoyed many rich and wonderful experiences, and now it’s time to share them.
This unique memory book gives a new generation of grandmothers a way to do just that. Your grandchildren will love finding out more about you, a fascinating person in your own right. The coolest fashions in high school, how you became engaged, your role models, and the values you cherish most are the types of details that your grandchildren are really interested in. They’ll also like learning about their ancestors to gain a better understanding of themselves.
For My Grandchild will help you open up that dialogue with the special young people in your life. There are straightforward fill-in-the-blanks for specifics such as family-tree information. And you’ll find broader questions followed by plenty of space for writing in longer, more personal answers. This keepsake volume also includes places for pasting in photos and mementos that you would like your grandchildren to have.
Use these pages to pass on traditions, such as your famous cookie recipe, and to offer wisdom, such as an inspiring quote, in a contemporary, appealing way.
Tell your family’s story in For My Grandchild and create a strong connection between generations.

An heirloom for the grandkids.......2007-10-03
A collection of questions and spaces for photos that act as a useful prompt for grandparents to record all those things that a grandchild might wonder about later in life.
Nicely presented, but I worry about the paper sleeve over the hardcover getting torn. Also, it would be nice to provide pockets for photos rather than just spaces.
The questions are good and far ranging however some are USA-specific, for example: 'who was president...'.
All in all a worthwhile purchase.

Perfect amount of Questions........2007-09-25
I bought this book to give to my mother. I want her to fill it out for the child that I am expecting in December. I really liked this grandma's journal because it had the perfect amount of questions. There are questions about where she grew up, what her parents were like, her first job, where she currently lives, and favorites.
My mother and father are divorced, but I felt like the section on "Grandpa" was not too overwhelming. I bought several journals looking for one that didn't focus too much on Grandpa. I almost didn't buy this one because of the previous comment, but I am so glad that I did buy it. Many of the other grandma journals would take over a year to complete because of the in depth questioning. I can't stress enough that this journal asks the perfect amount of questions. I am also glad that I am giving it to my mother because I don't know how she will answer many of the questions. It is a good opportunity for me to learn about my mother and her marriage to my father.
To anyone who is concerned about the Grandpa section, there are 6 pages that cover grandpa/marriage. The questions are:
1. When I met my husband-to-be we were
2. He was
3. I couldn't believe he
4. What I liked best about him was
5. He told me
6. We dated for
7. Our favorite thing to do was
8. The things we had in common were
9. The one thing we differed on was
10. He asked me to marry him on
11. I married Grandpa on
12. The wedding was held at
13. I wore
14. Your Grandpa wore
15. The guest list included
16. Our reception was
17. When I look at this photo(place for wedding picture) I
18. After we married we honeymooned
19. Our first home together was
20. Friends & family who visited us were
21. We loved to get away to
22. The thought of starting our own family was
23. I became pregnant
24. I gave birth to ...on
25. Other children include
My parents have been divorced for 27 years and I think that all of the above questions are tasteful and appropriate.
Keepsake Journal.......2007-04-05
This is a very nice book for recording your life for grandchildren; my only complaint is that in this world of combined families it is difficult to record facts, past and present, of ex-spouses and current husbands. There is one section for Grandpa; well my grandchildren call my current husband Grandpa, as well as my ex. There is no place to record for both. So I will probably just fill in what I can and leave the rest blank. With a family that is still "intact" this is a great journal.
Book Description
Grandfathers connect us to the past and give us the wisdom we need to face the future. That’s why this artfully designed keepsake offers grandfathers their own special vehicle for sharing their lives with the youngest generation. The contemporary styling and irresistible format—featuring helpful questions written from the grandchild’s perspective—make it wonderfully easy to explore family history.
There’s space to mention favorite relatives, jot down beloved stories, and pass on the important lessons that Grandfather learned from his parents—and grandparents. He can recount details of his childhood and teen years; reminisce about how he met Grandma; and reflect on his own experiences with fatherhood. Because the grandchild is also the star, there are questions to inspire Grandfather to remember when he first saw his grandchild, reveal what he likes best about being a grandparent, and relate how being a grandparent has changed who he is as a person.
And of course, this essential volume has plenty of room to paste in precious photos and mementos.

Culture, History, and Faith.......2004-01-04
I have been blessed not only to read this book but to have met the author. She is both fascinating in person and in printed word, and her story is enlightening, educational, and entertaining. If you have any interest in Native American history, you'll be glad you read this book.
The old and the new.......2002-07-24
I truly enjoyed this book. It was written in plain language and seemed very personable to me. It is a true story about Alma's life growing up on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana and how she was deeply influenced by her grandmother Pretty Shield who taught Alma the old ways...she was a grandmother's grandchild. Pretty Shield was pretty smart I think. She had an appreciation for the natural world not seen too much anymore in our modern lives. I found these "old ways" interesting. This has influenced Alma for sure and she is able to reconcile this as well as the hardships of life with her deep Christian beliefs. God Bless you too Alma!
Mine.......2002-06-01
I truly enjoyed reading the book and learning of my Aunt Alma's point of view. I have grown up hearing of Pretty Shield and truly am blessed with having an aunt that shares her story and pictures.
Understanding Indian Culture and Traditions.......2001-04-16
A wonderful book! While much of the poverty and oppression of Indian people is painful to read, one can see the wonderful connections between families in Ms. Snell's book. The love and care for Indian children by extended families is probably one of the greatest reasons the Indian people and traditions have survived. We in the "dominate culture" could learn much to change the disintigration of American families by learning more about Native American people.
So good I had to read it twice!.......2000-03-24
Grandmother's Grandchild,Alma Snell, shares memories of one of the first recorded Female Indian Elders..Pretty Shield. Pretty Shield was written about in the 1930's when women were too often overlooked. Pretty Shield saw the buffalo leave and the reservations begin. Alma shares the experience of making the transition to Reservation life with Pretty Shield by her side. This book is a refreshing and deeply personal life story that manages to state facts without undertones of judgement. BEAUTIFUL! READ IT!
