Customer Reviews:
A great place to start a conversation.......2005-06-22
I have liked, How To Say It to Girls; Communication with Your Growing Daughter by Nancy Gruver. This book gives a parents (of boys or girls) talking points on a wide variety of topics that are broken out by child's age 1-7yrs and 8-13yrs. It covers issues like, anger, cliques, courage, as well as sexuality, pornography and much, much more. There must be 80 or more topics to talk to your kids about. I am shareing a bit of one of the more challenging topics.
The Pornography section says, "Media and marketing are using more pornographic imagery and manipulating healthy sexuality into crass titillation to sell products...The challenge of parents is threefold. One, we must not put our heads in the sand and pretend that these images and messages aren't visible...two, we must clearly tell our kids that perverse use of sexuality is wrong and openly challenge those who pervert it for profit. Third, we must "walk the talk" in our own lives. The book goes into language to use with the young person, like, "Sexuality is not about how much skin you show. It is about making a connection with yourself and others spiritually, emotionally and physically. Now, every parent can custom fit the comments they use with their own child to match their own family values, but it is a good starting point.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to read, use, and teach.......2007-07-30
Dr. Petersen's practical guide to better communication not only answers the question that is the title of his book, but takes the reader and user of his techniques (the innovative TALKER/Listener card) on a journey into a higher quality of life. Good relationships start with clear communication of expectations, feelings, and desires. They flourish when we help each other listen carefully to the deeper meaning of what we say by practicing basic fairness with each other and by offering equal opportunity to our partners to speak and be heard correctly. This is more than a self-help book. I've used it to teach communication skills and insights in my marriage and family course in college. I recommend highly.
Really clear cut and helpful.......2007-04-18
Being a nursing student I need to be able to hear what others are telling me and then have the skills to listen even harder. I deal with a lot of people that communicate differently than I do and don't have a lot of time to get to know them. This book helped, and continues to help me, do my job.

Book Description
In this delightfully informative and entertaining book, Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer gives new meaning to the words "We need to talk." In her unmistakable voice, she urges couples to speak, listen, share, sing, get dressed up, write things down, or do whatever else it takes to express the feelings in your hearts. Best known for her plain talk about human sexuality, she encourages setting time aside each week to read and discuss one of the lessons she's written. Do this together weekly for a full year, and it could make a world of difference in your relationship.
Here is a sampling of the valuable tips and advice you'll read about:
DO tell your partner how you feel and what your needs are, but choose your words carefully and express them at the right time. Be sure what you are saying is what you want him or her to hear.
DON'T wait until you are blind-sided by sudden crises, tragedy, or anger to express your feelings.
DO unplug the TV, put away the to-do lists, turn off the computer screen playing in your mind, and find some quiet time along to be with each other.
DON'T focus on old grudges or make promises you can't keep. Apologize if you need to or accept your partner's apology; then move on.
DO close the blinds, light some candles, listen to your favorite song, and take time to reconnect if you've been apart.
DON'T expect to find an instant soul mate. New love needs time to grow, but when both people work at it, the rewards can be incredible.
DO deviate from routine. Be spontaneous. Plan something unexpected. Boredom is one of the leading killers of intimacy.
DON'T miss any opportunity to touch. No matter how fleeting the moment may be, make every hug count.
ABOVE ALL... DO keep the conversation flowing... It will strengthen the bonds between you and keep you connected with the one you love.

Customer Reviews:
Compassionate writing, for Dads, too; not just Mom/Grandmom.......2002-08-31
Stacey Roberts is a trainer /coach /physical therapist/ counselor/ friend who has worked with adolescent girls for 15 years. She writes with wit and compassion about girls' teen years and their need for relationships to help steady down the turmoil in family and the developing self. While she cites various authorities on teen years, she has developed her own compassionate authority from her experiences. She is, in a sense, a "natural" therapist, one of those genuinely helpful persons who has great empathy for teens.
It is not so much a "survival guide" as an affirmation of how important relationships are, especially when they change during a girl's maturation. Roberts is clear about the importance of fathers in this affirmation. In a divorce situation, she astutely observes that girls often reserve their anger and confusion for their moms and hold back on their (more distant) dads. Her recommendations make good sense--talking things through, affirmation, being clear about limits, asking about the girl's feelings.
I think men will get a lot from this book, also. We know that when fathers pull back from daughters in their teen years, many girls end up hurt/confused/wounded/angry, so it is important to maintain an appropriate relationship with your daughter. Roberts is on the right track.
Thanks from a grateful grandmother........2000-06-11
Kudos to the Breast Fairy author! My daughter, who had her own supreme struggles with the Breast Fairy as a teen, is now the mother of three girl-women (ah, justice!). We've both prayed for a book like this! Seldom does one find such an honest, clear, practical guide such as Stacey Roberts has written. Too bad this book can't be "required reading" after the baby shower, but then this gives loving mothers like myself a great gift for our daughters (and their daughters) when it's most needed! A grateful grandmother.

When the Breast Fairy Comes.......2000-03-10
This is an outstanding guide for any parent. There is no waste of time here. Everything is pertitnent, easy to read, and most important practical to apply. We all want to know how to foster self-esteem in our children. This is a great resource to refer back to time and time again to do so. I highly recommend it. It knocked my socks off.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2006-01-13
When we started doing the things suggested in this book our sons language and communication started to grow much more than before. The method is very easy, and yet so hard. The point is that to help our son develop, we have to change to fit him. This book covers all you need to get started right away (without even reading the whole book). It's great both for parents and professionals. My son has Down syndrome.
This book has been the MOST helpful!.......2005-03-15
After reading this book, and I have previously read other books by Dr. MacDonald, I must say that the techniques in it are the most family friendly ideas I've ever heard of! The viewpoint is so refreshing, to think that we as families CAN be the most influential people in our child's social development is a new approach. This book has shown me how to incorporate very do-able ideas into our everyday life. The techniques included in it are something the entire family can learn and can supplement any professional's course of therapy. Professional therapists would also find this valuable...it concentrates on the social aspect of development, and really, that is the basis for all communication. To get into the child's world and to be able to match his abilities, without judgement or correction, has unbelievable, immediate results! I highly recommend this book, to families, educators, therapists, and physicians!

"A useful book filled with information and insight." -- The Kirkus Reviews
Customer Reviews:
Thorough but long-winded.......2006-01-27
This book is designed to help you improve your ability to interact with others through everyday conversations. The author identifies six "talk- tools":Disclosures,Reflections,Interpretations,Advisements, Questions, and Silences. He devotes a chapter to each tool, and follows with a chapter on how to improve your use of each one. The book has over 200 densely printed pages, complete with research references, extended samples of recorded conversations and much discussion of possible variations. The length and completeness of the book works against its usefulness as a practical guide, especially compared to Laurie Kuhn's wonderful book Instant Persuasion on the same subject. Although Kuhn's book is short and simple (e.g., regarding Advisement she simply says "Don't give unsolicited advice") compared to Goodman's treatise, it is much easier to remember and apply.
