Book Description
A magical book of adventures and appreciations written and illustrated by the author of Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots this award-winning title was published by a small press in Colorado in 1991. The reviews say it all: A fetching primer on gardening for children. . . . Irresistible (The Smithsonian). What child, or indeed adult, would not be delighted? Lovejoy's recollections are wonderful, as are the illustrations (Victoria).
Celebrating the lore of the garden and the joy of interacting with nature, Sunflower Houses is a unique garden lover's miscellany, a collection of memories, poems, activities, garden plans, crafts, botanical riddles, stories, games, and planting projects. There are inspirations for a Floral Clock Garden, A Child's Own Rainbow, Faerie Tea Parties, and, of course, the Sunflower House. Plus, from garden lovers, stories of favorite flowers. Throughout are the artist's warm and appealing watercolors of a life in gardening remembered.

Sunflower Houses Review.......2005-10-22
Incredible! I loved it from start to finish. Great ideas for a gardening Grandmother to share the garden with her grandchildren. I especially liked the personal history aspect of each idea.
If you have "Roots, Shoots, Buckets and Boots" don't bother.......2004-05-21
Sharon Lovejoy's "Roots, Shoots, Buckets and Boots" has the a lot of the ideas that are in "Sunflower Houses". It's almost as if she wrote "Sunflower Houses" first, thought of better ways to illustrate and do the gardening plans, and then wrote "Roots, Shoots..." (I didn't check the publishing dates - so maybe this is true?)
I bought both of these books through Amazon, and got "Roots..." first. It's a better book, with amazing illustrations. I thought "Sunflower Houses" would be just as good but when it came I was disappointed. It is really a repeat of much of the same stuff with less illustrations, and actually a lot less ideas. Illustrations are still really nice, and if you don't have the other book, you will like this one.

The Magic of Childhood.......2002-03-29
Childhood is captured in this wonderful little book by Sharon Lovejoy. There are few books that make it into my "Magical Books" category, but this book by Sharon fits the bill. If you want to revisit childhood, or create a wonderful experience with your child or grandchild, this book is a must have.
If you like to garden or like to explore nature, have a child in your life you'd like to share that with, and like things that are child-like, this is a good book to have. It teaches you things like how to make clover chains and hollyhock dolls, it tells you when certain flowers bloom, like Four O'Clocks blooming at four o'clock. Or moonflowers, which bloom, big and white, in the light of the moon. The book is filled with wonderful illustrations to help you recreate magical childhood moments with your children or grandchildren.
Many adults experienced or remember those fun little things, but many of those things that we did as children are being lost, and it's amazing that a lot of kids these days have never done things like making a clover chain/necklace/bracelet. It's as if a part of childhood heritage is being lost. This is a fun book to share if, like me, you want to pass some of that heritage on to your children.
Let your inner child play..............2001-07-05
How many of us take our gardens and nature for granted? I certainly do when I get caught up in day-to-day survival mode. I discovered Sunflower Houses almost a decade ago when my sisters introduced me to a store called Heart's Ease in Cambria, California, which was owned at the time by Sharon Lovejoy. It wasn't long thereafter that I invited Sharon to be my guest on television. A faerie tea party was the theme of the segment. I was captivated by Sharon's ideas and views of the garden - transforming acorn tops, leaves, walnut shells and Japanese lanterns into the perfect faerie tea party. Vivid childhood memories came flooding back to me of blowing dandelions to the wind, climbing trees, rolling on the lawn, trying to catch butterflies and playing Red Light Green Light and Mother May I.
As I thumb through this 10th reprint of Sunflower Houses, I am reminded of the magic right outside our doors. In Sharon's words, "May you always remember that the most joyous and important experiences in life are not to be bought, but grown and nurtured in our homes and gardens." Winter, spring, summer or fall, the outdoors hold grand adventures for us! -Tiffany Windsor--

exactly what we were looking for.......2007-04-10
We saw this book in Lowe's one day and we were looking for a plan that would not get us in trouble with the local permit police. The plan in this one fit our needs. It has a modular deck that is made of modules of about 2 feet by 2 feet joined together that are placed on a stone bed. Just your imagination can stop you from finding ways to use these modules, but it shows a simple square deck made of these components. We plan on building it this summer after my husband has an operation this spring. We needed something not to demanding and simple. All the other books have nothing but complex plans and the easy ones show them built with those concrete engineered blocks, and our township won't allow them even though they sell them in the Home Depot less than a mile from our city limits.
Good but not update for building with laser levels........2004-11-10
In general this book seems to be pretty good. The only complaint I have is that laser levels are wonderful tools and really obsolete a lot of the other leveling techniques. This book does not cover using a laser level at all.

Book Description
This comprehensive, beautifully illustrated volume examines all aspects of the garden conservatory, both inside and out. Expert Peter Marston first looks at how the conservatory evolved, then explores the many different architectural styles suitable for houses of all periods, from the pavilion adjoining the country house to the garden room for the suburban dwelling. Both text and illustrations offer abundant ideas for furnishing, lighting, flooring, glazing, heating, and ventilation, revealing the conservatory to be one of the most versatile and desirable rooms in the house. The book also highlights various styles of conservatory gardening, with suggestions for suitable plants. Stunningly illustrated with 175 color photos, this is the perfect companion for all conservatory owners and aspiring owners. Peter Marston is the founder of Marston & Langinger, Britain's leading manufacturer of conservatories.
Customer Reviews:
Book of the conservatory.......2001-09-20
Somewhat informative but basic pictorial view of modern conservatory uses and alternatives. Like "Garden Room Style", also by Marston, barely veiled self serving to the fact that author is reputed to be linked to a manufacturing plant for conservatories and examples are dominated by same. Little here for the planner of a residential conservatory beyond what can be seen in brochures of British conservatory manufacturers that I have observed. Not much on construction, location and modern day applications of glass buildings. For inspiration and better visuals, see "Orangeries"(coffee table book), and "The Garden Room"(pictorial) or a selection of British conservatory companies' brochures.
A wonderful source of ideas for conservatory designs........1998-06-25
This book is a real gem for anyone who is dreaming of having a conservatory one day. The photographs provide countless ideas for the design of a conservatory. In fact, it is difficult to just sit and read the book without going through all the photos first! What is also nice is that the photos showcase both the exterior and interiors of the conservatories.
Although the book does not tell how to build a conservatory, the author provides many practical pointers that the average person or builder would not know. These tips are especially useful if the conservatory has a dual purpose; i.e., dining room.
This book is an invaluable resource for anyone building a conservatory. I have yet to find any other book that covers the subject as exhaustively as this one.
The theory, aesthetics and practicalities of Conservatories.......1997-10-04
Less of a how-to book than a source book for ideas and a very complete discusion on the history and theory of plant conservatories. Includes considerable detail on design features (floors, framing, furniture etc) and a small section on plants.
Virtually every one of the 170 pages contains drawings and photographs, mostly in color. The focus is British/North American, but translates to virtually any cold-temperate area in the world
You would probably need a how-to book if you were thinking of constructing a conservatory, and a planting guide book to fill it up, but you couldn't do better than start with this book to inspire and stimulate an interest in gardens under glass. A book for dreamers and do-ers alike.

Disappointing.......2003-01-06
I found the patio designs ugly and unimaginative. Don't waste your money on this book.

Best Therapy Yet for daughter's adhd/dyslexia/dyspraxia.......2007-03-08
Having tried multiple alternative therapies to treat our daughter's adhd/dyslexia/dyspraxia we were suspect that anything would work. Since our daughter did not crawl properly as a baby, this therapy made sense - go back and have her crawl. The results were impressive - almost a year after starting the therapy she is more organized, pleasant, and compliant. She mostly does her homework independently. She is on target for her grade although her writing and spelling are still weak, they are improving. Her coordination is outstanding now. She used to trip over everything and fall 1X/week on the playground. Now she never falls. School is so much easier for her than it used to be. She is able to stay seated and her writing is less labored. Combining this therapy with the Feingold diet (she still had residual anger issues, plus lots of allergies which led us to believe Feingold might help her), we have a child who is almost neurotypical in every way. This is not a quick fix and takes much dedication, but the results we feel are worth it.
This book has changed my life!.......2006-01-29
The exercises in this book have definitely changed my life. I can remember better, focus better, and organize better. Although this book is geared toward helping children, I am over 40, and these exercises worked for me. I was diagnosed with ADD just a few years ago. This book is well-written, well organized, and very genuine in voice. I fully recommend this book to anyone who shows signs of this STNR reflex still bothering them. I believe this is a breakthrough in ADD and ADHD treatment.
Finally, A book that I think reveals a drug free solution to hyper active people........2006-01-18
Dr. Miriam Bender should be applauded for her tireless research in revealing a misunderstood subject/label "ADHD". I have completely read this book and have started using the exercises with my child with positive results so far. The author, Nancy E. O'Dell organizes and addresses the subject very clearly so any layman can completely understand. If you have a child with hyper activity and are sincerely looking to rid your child of medication, it is in my opinion that you should study this book.
I am very pleased with the concept out lined in the book as it gives real solutions to a frustrating behavior condition that many children/adults experience in their daily lives.

LIFE CHANGING BOOK!.......2005-05-20
After many therapies, medications, and exercises, we have finally found the underlying cause of our son's ADHD. This book clearly explains what some children miss in their early development. Then it shows you detailed exercises that can cure the problem, not just treat the symptoms! Although the exercises require a commitment, we saw results after only one week! At the end of the 8 month program, we had a "normal" child who was able to focus, sit still, and function completely typical for his age without medication! WONDERFUL!
This is a great book! Learn to eliminate hyperactivity.......1998-11-28
If you want to learn how to really treat hyperactivity, the core issues and causes of hyperactivity, then this is the book for you. So many books only address the symptoms, but Drs Cook and O'Dell go for the underlying causes. And the treatments don't involve drugs, either! Kudos for your brave foray into an overworked subject using innovative and workable treatments.
