The smells of the great outdoors are captured in DK's small, sturdy board book Scratch and Sniff Garden. "What can you smell in the garden? Is the scent of the rose sweet?" the book begins. When you scratch the lovely yellow rose, it does indeed smell quite realistically roselike. Kids can also experience the pungent smells of lavender, a log, a newly mowed lawn, and a bunch of mint. This is a great way to introduce your kids to the aromatic wonders of the plant kingdom. And, DK's Scratch and Sniff Food is fun, too. (Baby to preschool)

Book Description

Two new books, chock-full of rich DK photography and lots of specially encapsulated sniffs, make these the board books toddlers will be itching to get their hands on!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-10-03

My two-year-old and I really love this book. After I initially took off the shrink wrap, I thought the smells were a little hard to take; however, after the book "aired out" for a couple of days, the smells were not so strong and were very pleasant. The pictures are fun with the ladybugs, butterflies, beetles, etc. A great little book!

5 out of 5 stars Like Real Life.......2007-08-01

I got this for my 2 toddlers and they love this book. The smells are very strong and they have nice big pictures. The smells really do smell like the real thing. It is a short story so a busy toddler's mind can consontrate long enough. I enjoyed this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very Smelly.......2006-02-23

This is a very nice book. Good pictures and very potent smells. I would have given it 5 stars if 2 of the smells didn't smell VERY much the same. The smell is put on the page not with stickers (like I am used to when I was little some 30 years ago) but with a texured surface that is only visable when you look at it from an angle. Very large areas of smell make it easy to get a good whiff. I am hoping this new way of smell application also lasts much longer than the old way!!? Happy sniffing!

5 out of 5 stars Scents of Summer!.......2005-05-09

Santa brought my little 2 yr old daughter this book for X-mas! She loves this book and so do I as it is a delight to smell fresh cut grass and fresh cedar wood in the dead of winter here! Am even getting a copy of this book for my 90 yr old grandmother who lives in a nursing home. How she would love to revisit these "warm weather day" smells!

5 out of 5 stars Great to teach little ones to smell!.......2004-08-07

My son who is 11 months loves this book and he loves to smell (and lick!) the different items. It has simple text in the form of questions ("Does the rose smell sweet?") alongside with real-life photos.

The smells are: Rose, Lavendar, Pine, Grass, Mint.

It has lasted for a few months of abuse so far except for the last page (Mint) which the scent has faded.

I would definitly recommend this book and I look forward to owning the others in the scratch and sniff series.

Scented Containers comes to us from the garden author Sue Fisher (also known from radio and TV) who began writing following a career in the nursery and garden-center business.

In the modern world, visual images and technology tend to dominate, so that sight and sound become the chief senses, leaving smell lurking in the background. This is a shame, especially where gardening is concerned, as scent is often the most delightful of the pleasures that plants and flowers offer. This book sets out to redress this imbalance by showing how plants with scented flowers or aromatic foliage can be easily grown in portable containers to give ever-changing, year-round enjoyment in different positions in the garden. Whether you are new to gardening or are a seasoned gardener looking for fresh ideas, you will find an abundance of information here, ranging from which plants to choose and how to grow them to tips, projects, and seasonal reminders offering encouragement to gardeners of all abilities.

The text is clearly set out, straightforward, easy to follow, and liberally interspersed with truly magnificent color photographs, watercolors, and black-and-white diagrams. Of particular interest are the projects, the most glorious of which is the creation of a fragrant evening garden. Others include making herb hanging baskets and constructing and growing a cone of spring bulbs. The book concludes with a comprehensive directory of scented plants and herbs for easy reference, containing practical information on how to plant and care for your containers in order to obtain maximum results with minimum work. Scented Containers succeeds in providing fragrant inspiration for any gardener. --Susan Naylor

As a New England gardner based outside Boston, I found the prose enjoyable but the recommendations had little relevance to local needs.

This book complements in a minor way but does not supersede Wilder's FRAGRANT PATH or WILSON's FRAGRANT YEAR.

I'd be honored to be the first person to review this book. It seems odd that nobody bothered to before me; nearly every other work by Crowley has been reviewed by a representative selection of lunatics with bad grammar. Hmmm. I wonder what it is about this one.

Whether or not you "buy" Crowley as Prophet of the New Aeon and all that other crazy stuff, you have to concede that a) he was an extremely prolific writer, and b) nearly everything he wrote is extraordinary, if only for its audacity. The man had some nerve. In the present case, he dared, in 1910 London, to publish this volume of "ghazals" (sonnets on the Persian mold) treating vividly and explicitly of homosexual intercourse. This is no sublimated Oscar Wilde stuff either. Crowley gets down to plumbing. True, he does it from behind several pseudonyms - a "Major Lutiy", a "Reverend P.D. Carey", and of course, "Abdullah el-Haji" himself, the supposed original seventeenth-century Persian author of these crimes. The Major, it seems, had infiltrated a Sufi sect and acquired a rare copy of the "holy text" so jealously guarded from Westerns (hence its absence from the local library) and prepared it for publishing. But he was killed in S. Africa before he could complete the task; so a colleague picked it up on his behalf, and got the Reverend to put in his two cents on the general subject for the introduction.

This gives Crowley an opportunity to vent his own ideas on homosexuality from three different points-of-view, and while nobody today will read this book unaware of its true authorship, it was also intended to impart the credibility of three "respectable" men to this rare amalgam of oriental mysticism and hard-core gay sex. They speak of "sodomy" with absolute frankness as though it had never been considered socially tabu. The Reverend's essay is particularly explicit.

Then we get to the ghazals themselves. The first line reads: "As I placed the rigid pen of my thought within the inkstand of my imagination, I tasted the bliss of Allah..." Immediately you know what you're in for. He doesn't restrict himself to euphemisms for sex - rather sex is supposed to be the euphemism for the mystic "relations of Man with God," and is therefore treated in graphic detail. The text is littered with footnotes containing an amazing assortment of esoteric "odds and ends." There'a a table with the ninety-nine names of Allah, a clairvoyant's description of the 72 demons of the Goetia, a demonstration of magic squares - even an advertisement for "orchitic testicular substance - prepared from the testicals of the goat."

Crowley's major precedent here was Sir Richard Burton with his lush descriptions of Arabic homosexual practices in the footnotes to his translation of the "Arabian Nights," but of course The Beast takes it a hundred times as far in about a thousandth of the volume. Unique, elaborate to the point of rococo, vivid and contradictory and sure to offend practically everybody.

    Book Description

Color, leaf, and texture tend to dominate gardeners’ criteria when it comes to plant selection. But in the garden, floral scent is often the most powerfully sensual experience. In this book, expert gardener Ann Lovejoy recommends and describes over 300 scented flowers that will provide fragrant beauty throughout the year. And because night-bloomers have some of the most aromatic scents, they get a chapter of their own. Here are profiles of longtime garden favorites such as roses and magnolia, as well as forgotten charmers like night phlox and the intoxicating datura. The descriptions include expert cultivation tips to attain the best results.

5 out of 5 stars A superb book on gardening.......2004-07-06

In Fragrance In Bloom: The Scented Garden Throughout The Year, expert horticulturist and veteran garden writer and columnist Ann Lovejoy has once again created a superb book on gardening. This time, as the title suggests, Ann focuses upon gardening for the fragrances that various garden plants and flowers can bring throughout the growing cycles of spring, summer and fall. Beautifully enhanced with gorgeous full color photography by Lynne Harrison, Fragrance In Bloom is confidently recommended reading -- especially for the novice garden wanting to cultivate a truly memorable, imaginative, and fragrant garden offering a true diversity of aromatic scents. Also very highly recommended are two of Ann Lovejoy's previous works: Naturalistic Gardening and The Garden In Bloom.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars lovely pictures.......2002-03-27

The photographs in this book are gorgeous and the text is interesting, informative and inspiring. Rather than leaping right into a description of flowering plants, however, the author begins with a chapter on smell itself, discussing it's importance, the fragrances that were popular in the Victorian era and those that are sought after today. The plants themselves are divided by type: annuals (which, for some reason, is where he puts scented geraniums); perennials; roses; bulbs, corms and tubers; shrubs and vines; water gardens; night gardens; and scented houseplants. Each chapter describes a large variety of plants and explains where and how to grow them. Also included is a design map for planting a border of annuals; a brief section on the diseases and pests that attack roses; a short chapter on general garden maintenance; and a complete index (but no list of suppliers).

The author has an easy to read, rambling writing style. He tells stories, gives personal reflections, supplies quotes from litereature and horticultural writings, and clearly know his subject. If you are looking for a general book on fragrant gardens, then you'll probably like this one a great deal. But if you're looking for more of a guide to scented plants, which ones to grow where, in a concise format, then this isn't the book for you. The author does supply light/water/soil requirements and hardiness zones for the plants in the book, but it's included in the text, it isn't in an easy-to-find table which means that you have to read through the entire thing in order to find appropriate plants for your garden.

This book is so pretty and fun to read that it would make a nice present for someone who likes to read gardening literature but it really isn't for the person who, like myself, was looking for quick reference guide to the types of scented plants for zone 5 that grow in full sun and under dense trees.

    5 out of 5 stars Really fun!.......2003-11-30

This is such a fun book - the artwork that decorates every page is terrific, the writing style is fun, and while I've only played with a few recipes so far - I can definitely say so far so good! The book opens with an intro to faeries, the flowers of faeries, and essential oils. The it gets to drying flowers/herbs (I actually buy mine but plan to expand the gardens next spring so I might be doing some rdying next summer). There's general info on making potpourri in here like using fixatives to keep the scents etc. Then there's a great one-pager that lists the different plants and the type of scent they have so you can be creative if you want too. The recipes comprise the rest of the book and they have great names like "christmas magic", "dance of the morning nymphs" etc. On the facing page to each recipe is a little text of faerie lore pertaining to different plants that were used in the recipe. The recipes are broken out by season so as you welcome the changes of the year you can make a corresponding potpourri. The results are pretty and smell nice too.

    1 out of 5 stars a bit of a waste.......2003-04-04

the book is just a bit too cutesy, and doesn't really fit in any category. It is certainly not a guide to scent or perfume blending, nor is it a book about aromatherapy. I regret spending the money on it, and plan to offer it used for the price of shipping.

          5 out of 5 stars Great 1 a.m. reference book.......2007-07-25

Dr. Kelly is our pediatrician, and when we met her during our pregnancy visit, we were given a copy of the previous edition. There were many nights when we would pull out this book to figure out when and if we should panic... it was a good guide for new parents. We still used it occasionally with our 2nd child, when we needed a reminder of what to do for croup or how long to store breast milk or whatever.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for new parents.......2007-01-26

This was a very insightful book that covered almost everything that a baby could need. I suggest reading this before getting a baby, because it will show you the responsibilities that you're going to have to do when you get one. It has a lot of black and white illustrations, mainly drawings of certain procedures like CPR which guide you well.

4 out of 5 stars Recommend to any parents to be!.......2005-09-17

This is a great book. Like it says it covers just about everything you need to know about the babys first year of their life! Might not be a good review, but if you dont know what to expect with your newborn this book is a must.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for new fathers.......2000-05-09

It's hard to find a more crowded section of a bookstore than the pregnancy/parenting section (unless it is the computer guides for dummies section) But how many different caring-for-babies books does a new parent need? Hopefully only one or two, but keep in mind there are different books for different personality types and needs.

Which is why "First-Year Baby Care" makes a good book for a new father. Written by a pediatrician and mother, it contains all the necessary information in an easy-to-use, nicely illustrated format. But doesn't have the personal vignettes and "tales from the front lines" advice that books like "What to Expect When You're Expecting" have, advice and personal accounts that I found comforting as a new mother. I would suspect fathers would benefit more from a book like this, with it's "cut-to-the-chase and tell me how to diaper this baby" approach.
