Customer Reviews:
A great panda book.......2001-01-27
There are not many panda books out there, but this is a great one. There are some wonderful pictures of ZooAtlanta's two bears, as well as other great pictures. It also tells the story of Maple's journey to bring the pandas to Atlanta. In addition, it has some panda facts on it. It would look great on anyone's coffee table.
A Private Sector Success.......2001-01-25
This is a fine introduction to the Giant Panda, its patterns of life, the complexities of conservation, and the inevitable politics of a zoo trying to work with both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Chinese Government to bring Pandas to the United States.
Terry Maple's story alone is amazing and will interest anyone who believes that private interests can perform public services better than government. He is a professor of Primate Psychology at Georgia Tech who has been the director of ZooAtlanta since 1984. He saved a zoo that was run by a city government and was on the verge of disaccreditation by transferring management responsibility to a private association. This has allowed him to move the zoo from a poorly run, poorly managed institution that was not the best environment for its animals to one which has an amazing research focus, which has developed a world class gorilla, orangutan and Mandrill program, and allowed him to set his sights on bringing Pandas to Atlanta. In the process he was also a pioneer in privatizing government run zoos as ZooAtlanta has flourished as a privately run institution leased from the city.
Panda ethology is worth studying because it raises troubling questions about lessons we might need to learn about our own species. Consider the implications for overly bureaucratized education for humans while reading the following passages:
"Pandas receiving enrichment were much more active in the presence of the test stimuli, and in many cases stereotyped behavior was reduced or eliminated. Enrichment was a strongly motivating condition in the lives of these animals... enrichment keeps pandas active." (p.76)
"New social opportunities are often powerful motivators"(p.79) "Baby pandas do not show any signs of independence until the fourth month of life, and they may stay with their mothers into a second year." Research has indicated that they stay "together two and a half years, about a year longer than most researchers thought was the norm".
Maple goes on to discuss a variety of lessons being learned about Panda behavior and many of them will stimulate you to think about challenges we face in understanding the best way to raise humans.
This book is also an excellent outline of the relationship between conservation in the wild and conservation in zoos and the degree to which both approaches are necessary if we are going to optimize biodiversity - especially for large vertebrates. It is a worthwhile introduction for anyone who cares about conservation in general, pandas in particular or the method by which two countries can combine government and private activities into effective conservation.

Book Description
"Of course the panda is not safe. Nor will it ever be. It will always be threatened by something, attracting adversity as readily as adoration. We know what the panda needs: a forest with bamboo, a den for its young, and freedom from persecution."--George B. Schaller
Giant Pandas in the Wild: Saving an Endangered Species takes an insider's view of one of the most alluring--and until recently, one of the least understood--animals on the endangered species list. Through stunning photographs never before published in a book, readers enter a world of magical landscapes in a remote, mountainous area that is home to China's remaining 1,100 wild pandas.
Lü Zhi, who began her research in 1985, made the panda's habitat her second home, and in the process, gained the trust of more than twenty of these animals. Her observations and photographs of nearly every aspect of the panda's daily life dispel the myths about these creatures that have accumulated in the public's mind. From intimate pictures of a mother raising her infant cub to photographs of these magnificent animals throughout the seasons and over the years, the author presents the fascinating world she shared with her subjects.
Giant Pandas in the Wild offers not only an in-depth study of the animal's natural history but also a story of the dedication required to save the panda from almost certain extinction.

Book Description
The Goodman of Paris (Le Ménagier de Paris) wrote this book for the instruction of his young wife around 1393. He was a wealthy and learned man, a member of that enlightened haute bourgeoisie upon which the French monarchy was coming to lean with increasing confidence. When he wrote his Treatise he was at least sixty but had recently married a young wife some forty years his junior. It fell to her to make his declining years comfortable, but it was his task to make it easy for her to do so. The first part deals with her religious and moral duties: as well as giving a unique picture of the medieval view of wifely behaviour it is illustrated by a series of stories drawn from the Goodman's extensive reading and personal experience. In the second part he turns from theory to practice and from soul to body, compiling the most exhaustive treatise on household management which has come down to us from the middle ages. Gardening, hiring of servants, the purchase and preparation of food are all covered, culminating in a detailed and elaborate cookery book. Sadly the author died before he could complete the third section on hawking, games and riddles. This unique glimpse of medieval domestic life presents a worldly, dignified and compelling picture in the words of a man of sensibility and substance. The distinguished historian EILEEN POWER was Professor of Economic History at the University of Cambridge.

Identifying American Architecture: A Pictorial Guide to Styles and Terms : 1600-1945
ASIN: 0140281126 |
Book Description
From saltboxes to split-levels, Victorian Ladies to Colonial Revivals, Prairie Styles, bungalows, and Moderns, these are the houses that have defined the architecture of a nation for the past three centuries. In House Styles in America, these classic examples illustrate the major movements that have shaped the American landscape. This beautifully illustrated tour of America's houses begins in 1640 with the early roots of American style--a combination of European skill and attitude combined with American know-how. This architectural journey continues on through the 18th and 19th centuries, through the Greek Revival, the Americanization of the Gothic Revival, and the early Colonial Revival. The houses of the 20th century are the main attraction as House Styles in America delves into the major movements in the Romantic Revivals of the 1920s and 1930s: English, French, and Spanish. Replete with 200 color photographs, this architectural journey is an essential and beautiful guide for realtors, tourists, and students of architecture.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on the subject.......2003-02-25
So why is it out of print? (Had no trouble getting one though.) This book is based on a series of magazine articles for Old Home Journal, so the style is informal. The carefully chosen color pictures set it apart from its competition, A Field Guide to American Houses, by the other husband and wife team. But mostly it's the authors' ability to explain in simple language the events that caused the rise and fall of the various styles: the switch to stud framing, the widely circulated pattern books, the Arts and Craft movement, World War I and the various European styles brought home by the soldiers, etc.
A house for everyone.......2000-07-09
House Styles in America is a well constructed collection of american houses dating back to the old Ironworks houses, Like the Turner house and Bacons Castle, but this book also contains modern houses, like Phillip Johnson's glass house. This book is a great addition to anyones growing architecture library.

How to Build a Cheap Sports Car (Motorbooks Workshop)
ASIN: 0060191937 |
Book Description
What does a man do on reaching midlife? Stereo-typically, he buys a red sports car. But that was too pat for Chris Goodrich; he decided to build one instead, hoping to understand a culture generally considered unsuitable for a prep-school, Ivy League graduate. A self-confessed "auto-idiot," he was soon in over his headbut that proved part of the fun, because this immersion in auto mechanics forced Goodrich to can-front new ideas, new people, and new perspectives. In fourteen months it took to build the roadster he learned to appreciate not only how cars work but also the role they have played in shaping American culturein the evolution of mass production and the reduction of craftsmen to wage slaves, in making the nation almost totally dependent on a machine that seemed to promise freedom.
Ultimately, Roadster is a celebration of the automobile, for Goodrich builds a Caterharn Seven. A 1957 Lotus design, it's everything a sports car should be and more-noisy, drafty, uncomfortable, and absolutely thrilling. In completing the Seven, and finally driving it, Goodrich finds a completion of his owna personal connection between theory and practice, the mental and the manual.
"As antidote to a virulent case of modern anomie, Chris Goodrich decided to build himself a car. The example he chose was a Lotus Sevenperhaps the most charming retro vehicle in historyand he succeeded not only in assembling a worthy roadster but in tossing off along the way a lighthearted look at the history of industrial ideas. I envied him the process of building it almost as much as the caror the bookhe ended up with."
John Jerome, author of Truck: On Rebuilding a Worn-Out Pickup, and Other Post-Technological Adventures When I told my friends I had decided, in my middle thirties, to build by hand a street-legal roadster, many suggested I was too young to be going through a midlife crisis. As time went on, I realized that the comment, intended humorously, held more than a grain of truth. It captured something I was loath to admit: that my working life was much less than I wanted it to be. I had held responsible positions, earned the respect of my peers, made a name for myself in (minor) professional circles ... and yet something was missing.
That something? Joy. Of discovery, of open doors, of seeing the world in new ways; of living in the moment; of following your bliss, as mythologist Joseph Campbell put it. Surely you could do the work you loved without succumbing to its incidental baggage? Pursue a career without kowtowing to careerism; grow professionally without being professionalized? I would come across, years later, the perfect diagnosis of my work malaise. "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities," the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki told his students, "but in the expert's there are few."

Customer Reviews:
caterham and politics - uneasy bedfellows.......2001-07-03
Worth picking up only for the reason that there are few books of this kind out there. It is from a US perspective and covers Lotus/Caterham history in part, the construction of a Caterham in part and the somewhat related essays on industrial society, individualism, the Prisoner in large part. The author is not a car guy so you won't find any construction tips in here (the Caterham manual is spotty in places, it would have been nice . . .)
I do like his attempt to place the Seven "in context" by explaning why anyone would want one of these cars, the purity of its design and craftsmanship inherent in a self built car. However, often when one buys a book of this sort, you thirst for information, statistics and impressions of the car. The author's digressions on Henry Ford do not quench that thirst (what if his Caterham was fitted with a Honda Blackbird or a Rover K-series engine - this book would not have been written!).
If anyone is thinking about putting together a Caterham and wants some encouragement - I think this book offers it.
Excellent read for boomer males.......2000-06-29
Goodrich's book is a very easy and fun read. I particularly appreciated his style of combining wrench turning with philosophy. The style makes you feel as if you are in the garage helping him assemble the Seven while he discusses his views. His perspective on the slow death of craftsmanship and individualism are right on. I did wonder how his family felt about his long absences working on the Seven. Philosophy, sociology, and 0-60 in 5 seconds, an unusual but interesting combination.
Just what I Expected.......2000-03-19
When I read the Local Newspaper's review of "Roadster",I Zipped right out and bought it,diving in with great relish, and reading the rather creative way that Mr Goodrich dealt with his midlife crisis. I in no way expected to read a bolt-by-bolt dissertation on how to build a seven (There are plenty enough out there) but how the process of kit assembly affected this man's life, especially given his Professional background, and how he reconnected with the satisfacton of seeing something coherent rise from the jumble of parts and boxes. However good I think "Roadster" is, I feel that this is the omega of what I call the "Dissatisfied Professional" books. This will probably be the last book of its kind I read, for I feel that the territory of the Automobile and its affect on individuals and society at large has been covered. Very good book, just don't try to read anything else into it.
His writing style needs a tune-up!.......2000-03-09
This guy is a professional journalist? No wonder he had a mid-life crisis. His writing style is awful. This is a book by a man with too much to say. It should have been edited down by fifty pages because 25-percent of every sentence in this 200-page book is unnecessary babble. I bought this book because I am interested in building a Super-Seven automobile. On that note, the book is unique because it describes a first-hand account of what that experience can be like. The author should be commended for sharing his experience with us, but I take exception in the way it was presented. He puts in little Zen anecdotes here and there, which turn out trite, especially when combined with all the whining that goes on in this book. If you really want to learn more about how to build a Super-Seven, become a member of a local car club and talk to car owners.
Lots of 'angst', little 'roadster'.......1999-10-17
I purchased this book based on glowing reviews here and elsewhere, and must admit extreme disappointment. This is not a book about assembling a car, it is a book about an intellectual's struggle with middle age interspersed with occasional comments about putting the car together (which was depressingly uneventful). Had it been marketed more as a essay on how vehicles have changed our lives and interesting tidbits of history, I probably wouldn't be so hard on it. I was looking for another "Truck" by John Jerome, and I was misled that this was it. Roadster isn't a bad book, it's just not for the pure car guy who only cares about fixing and building them and doesn't give a hoot about societal issues. Get "Truck" if zen isn't your thing.
