Debbie Mumm Delivers Again.......2004-05-14
Any quilt book by Debbie Mumm can be counted upon to deliver certain things: lots of charming designs organized by theme so you can mix and match, excellent instructions, and inspiring photos. This book also gives you numerous small projects you can make for gifts, some really quick decorating ideas, and a nice section on organizing your holiday preparations.
In addition to the specifically Christmas designs with Santas, angels, nutcrackers, and such, there are projects with hearts, tools, fish, apples, and animals which could be made at any time of year. The general directions are excellent. While there are no projects for full-sized quilts, the book has enough information and enough attractive quilt blocks that you could easily come up with one yourself. Contrariwise, if you have a book of quilt blocks and need directions for putting them to use in gift and household items, this book will also fill that need.
Quilters need this book for their Christmas shelf, and people who might like to dabble in quilting can use it to get started.
Easy to follow, concise directions, great for all levels.......1998-01-19
This was my first quilting experience Bible! I was able to follow all instructions and guidlines with ease. I now have a new life long hobby. This book is FULL of superb hints, tips and creative suggestions. The beginner or Master quilter will enjoy every page!
Book Description
Renowned for her acclaimed Victorian novels as well as a stunning new series set in World War I, Anne Perry consistently dazzles us with stories rife with emotion, intrigue, and psychological depth. She recently expanded her talents with the delightfully rendered novella, A Christmas Journey, which USA Today called “one of the best books to brighten the joyous season.” Now she has given readers another gift–a yuletide offering full of holiday magic . . . and murder.
The Dreghorn family is gathering for an anticipated reunion in the Lake District of England. The blissful tranquility of the snowbound estate, however, is soon shattered by what appears to be an accidental death. The victim’s distraught wife, Antonia, summons her godfather, distinguished mathematician and inventor Henry Rathbone–one of the most beloved characters from Perry’s bestselling William Monk series. But questions about the tragic event turn into whispers of murder, sending shock waves among members of the Dreghorn clan, who haven’t seen each other in ten years.
Now Rathbone must put his analytical and creative capacities to the test as he assumes the role of an amateur investigator. But while searching for clues and mulling over potential motives, he cannot help but wonder: Will another poor soul meet the same untimely end–and be silenced like the night?
In this Christmas novella, featuring a colorful, somewhat eccentric cast of characters and an irresistible plot as twisty as a ribbon, Rathbone rescues the holiday with a grace that would impress William Monk himself.

Praise for Anne Perry’s A Christmas Journey
“A Christmas Journey is that rarest of seasonal thrillers: one that exemplifies the message and spirit of the holiday. . . . This brief work has an almost Jamesian subtlety, and with its powerful message of responsibility and redemption–‘We need both to forgive and to be forgiven’–it conveys a moral force in keeping with the season.”
–The Wall Street Journal
“A doozy of a Christmas mystery.”

The Second Anne Perry Christmas Novel.......2006-12-28
A Christmas Visitor is the second Christmas tale by Anne Perry. The first book, A Christmas Journey, was a nice book about redemption and forgiveness, yet had little to do with the Christmas season. In A Christmas Visitor, however, Ms. Perry's storytelling skills and the Christmas season take center stage. The story involves the suspicious death of Judge Judah Dreghorn and a house and property that he bought years before after a claimant for the property was sent to prison, by Judge Dreghorn, for forgery. Family friend Henry Rathbone travels to the Dreghorn home as does the surviving brothers and sister-in-law of Judah. The story is very interesting and the mystery is a nice puzzle. Ultimately, family and the spirit of the season are the most important elements of this very good four (4) star book.
A Light Tale for Christmas.......2006-03-20
In this second of her Christmas parables, Anne Perry chooses to focus on Henry Rathbone, a minor character in her Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. The book is short and easy to read. The mystery itself is somewhat confusing-- the issue regarding the date of property deeds took my slow little mind a while to catch on, but by the end I understood everything. If you are looking for a happy ending, you won't find it with this book, but the ending is a surprise and is a good morality tale. I have a feeling that in real life, it wouldn't quite end as simply as Ms. Perry would have it, but then, it is fiction.
hmm..........2006-02-22
Well, I will admit that I was a bit skeptical about Anne Perry's (former name: Juliet Hulme). I was turned off by the fact that this woman was convicted of murder as a teenager and felt it might taint my opinion of her writing. But, I went into the novel with an open mind and found that Ms. Perry is a talented writer and I look forward to reading more of her work. I recommend her books.
Human dignity...from two sides........2006-01-18
Henry Rathbone is a wonderful character and Ms. Perry brings his dignity and sense of right to the story. His unbending sense of what is right is tempered by compassion and we feel as if we are there with him as he sees the whole unpleasant situation unfold.
The story is a clever one and I found the ending a surprise- and liked it all the better for it.
The Honorable Judge Decides.......2005-07-28
On this sweltering summer day, I needed something to cool me off. A Christmas Story about Victorian England by Anne Perry seemed like just the right thing. I was right. It definitely helped!
As we move away from Christmas and Easter, it's easy to forget the things that Christians are supposed to do . . . including following the example of Jesus. There is perhaps no more dangerous occupation for a Christian's soul than being a judge . . . for it is God's job to judge and ours to forgive.
In this novella, we learn about a remarkable, upright judge, Judah Dreghorn. The tale develops in an unusual fashion because Dreghorn has just died and his brothers, sister-in-law, wife, child and friend, Henry Rathbone, are arriving to celebrate Christmas as best they can. Dreghorn's death soon appears to be suspicious, and the visitors begin to unearth the secrets of his final day on Earth . . . with surprising consequences.
For many who prefer a certain type of Christmas story, this book will seem a little off. I found it more morally advanced than most Christmas stories because it addresses the challenges of doing the right thing . . . when there are earthly consequences.
I guarantee that you won't soon forget this story . . . and will probably think about it when you have the chance to right a wrong.
May God bless you always!

This is a cross-cultural Christmas tale of a child's self-discovery with introductions to folk characters, traditions, and a bit of language of a far-away country. A pronunciation guide is included: The Snow Maiden's Russian name, Sne-GUR-och-ka, is a guaranteed giggle. The lesson of the fable-like story is to "be yourself and do the best you can."

Russian Snow Maiden.......2007-08-05
Great book to introduce you to Russian Christmas traditions and a some common words. The illustrations in this book are great and done in the Russian style (The illustrator was is a Russian Artist).
This story blends the Western and Russian traditions of Christmas in a way that children and parents will enjoy year after year.
Beautiful and inspiring.......2006-01-04
This is a beautifully illustrated book about how a young Russian girl helps Santa Claus. It is a wonderful introduction to the variety of ways that Christmas is celebrated in other countries, but retains enough focus on the US to make it interesting to young Americans. My daughters love the book and I enjoy reading it to them as the story is interesting for both children and adults.
A First Rate Story with Caldecott Quality Illustrations.......2005-12-18
In this engaging story, the Snow Maiden's dilemma can be appreciated by all ages. At the point where the Snow Maiden makes a significant contribution to Santa's inventory, she gains self confidence and happiness. A perfect book for reading aloud over the Holidays! Children and adults will delight in exploring the plentiful illustrations.

If you can find it, get it!.......2003-06-04
Such a shame that this book is going out of print! I was lucky enough to find a copy through the publisher after months of looking. I have quite a few of HWB, Annie's Attic, Needlecraft Shop Publications (they are all basically from the same publishing house) and many of them have received wishy washy reviews from me because there are as many uninteresting or horrid projects in them as there are gorgeous ones. This book is the EXCEPTION as just about everything makes you want to take out your yarn and hook and start crocheting! It is noteworthy to mention that the styling of the projects are not only cute and country-like as the title suggests but there are also many designs with a Victorian inspired feel to them. The variety and amount of projects in this book are abundant and the projects and pics are fantastic. There are far too many to mention them all....a gorgeous welcoming holiday mat, a warm and cozy ladies Christmas cardigan that is elegant and doesn't scream of tackiness, cute Christmas kitchen projects, tons of beautiful country and Victorian style ornaments, a flip-over Christmas dress doll (one side is a doll, the other a bear), a Victorian decorated Christmas tree...
Why this one is going out of print is beyond my comprehension but if you can find it get it!

amazing illustrations; touching tale.......2007-06-15
We started reading Babushka after our son was born, and my [...]twin girls absolutely love this story. With a slight religious tone that's not too overwhelming, the story brings the meaning down to earth and reminds us of the importance of celebrating life, not gifts... these are some of sophie's best illustrations. We're a huge fan of her artwork.

The One Minute Review.......2006-04-17
I like this book. Sure it may be cheesy and sometimes condescending and pedantic, but it is easy to read. What I like about this book is that it truly teaches parents how to parent in a way that helps children access an internalized sense of right and wrong. It seems like children today, because of our society's lack of social limits, have a shallow sense of right and wrong. There is a difference between not doing something because you will get caught and not doing something because you know that it is wrong.
This technique helps parents communicate in a clear and effective manner what they feel about a situation and attempt to get the child to internalize it. In other words, it teaches parents to help the child become their own parent.
I have used this series of books in my private practice to help clients learn to parent, as well as how to communicate with others. This book is well worth reading.

THE ONE MINUTE MOTHER.......2005-12-15
The BEST parenting book! Why struggle disciplining your children when you can teach them to do it themselves? It is so simple it's hard to believe it really works.
Could have been said in three paragraphs...........2005-03-21
After reading and appreciating THE ONE MINUTE MANAGER years ago, I assumed I'd enjoy THE ONE MINUTE MOTHER now that I have two kids of my own. WRONG! The author's needless use of a silly story, very slow and unappealing, does little to nothing to enhance the principles of One Minute Parenting.
The main three ideas are simple, they seem effective enough, and I'll definitely give them a try when my children are older (not really best suited for real youngsters). THEY ARE: 1. Set and review goals regularly as a family; 2. Catch your kids doing something right and offer prompt praise; 3. Conversely, when kids are at fault, offer a short and succinct reprimand taking care not to scold the person, just their behavior.
Dr. Johnson's characters, a mom to be, a One Minute Mother whom she is interviewing, and the One Minute Mother's children, sound like condescending stick figures in their dialogue and after a few pages you find yourself just wanting to turn to the final chapter to finish get it over with.
The chart at the end of the story easily sums up what could have been said in a one page essay for a magazine -- this was a needless waste of publishing. I'm selling my copy ASAP.
Lots of Filler, Little Content.......2003-10-01
This book is written in the form of a story. My hunch is that it's to supply a *lot* of filler to an idea that could be easily explained in a few pages. As it is, I still finished it in an hour. Even though it didn't take long, I was still highly annoyed at the waste of my time reading so much fluff for so little substance. A young pregnant woman interviews a woman and her grown daughters about what makes a good mom. There are no real-life examples, studies, anecdotes, etc. Basically it boils down to three tips: set individual and family goals and review them daily; catch your kids doing things right and praise them; and address infractions ASAP and condemn the behavior, not the child. Pretty basic stuff. The only reason I gave this book two stars instead of one is because the advice is sound, if simple. If you're still curious, go to the bookstore and take two minutes to look at the diagram toward the end of the book. It explains everything succinctly, and you'll have saved yourself an hour and $10.
Suitable for parents of children above ten.......2003-05-05
This book is very suitable to parents of children above ten years, but as a parent to a three and four years old, I did not find it much helpful. How can I teach toddlers to sit down and write together our mutual goals and seek ways to achieve them!!
I kept this book up in one of my shelves for future reference, I think I will benefit from it later.

Customer Reviews:
HOPE FOR THE BUSY MOM: GOD IS LISTENING TO YOU.......2005-06-16
I picked up this book in my grocery store pharmacy. What a fabulous place to sell inspirational gift books! With a cart full of groceries and a happily kicking two-year-old, I couldn't resist this title, ONE-MINUTE PRAYERS FOR BUSY MOMS.
Is it possible to pray in one minute? If you're a mom, that may be all the time you have. Yet, the Apostle Paul tells us to "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thes. 5:16). So doesn't this mean we're to keep our heart focused on God throughout our busy days?
When we're overwhelmed with our to-do list, we can let God handle the details. When we're bursting to tell someone how happy or sad or excited or lonely we are...then we can lift our thoughts heavenward at any moment. We're not alone.
Hope Lyda has written a beautiful book that allows us to peek into her personal relationship with Christ. She covers a variety of topics that moms face every day: how to have a moment of quiet, things we worry about, disciplining our children, finding purpose, and asking why.
Each short meditation opens with a scripture from the New International Version of the Bible. Then we read a prayer from the author that we may also pray. For example, the topic, "It's About Respect" offers this opener, "Lord, mold me into a mother worthy of honor. I cannot force my children to respect me, but I can live a life that is fruitful, deeply rooted in Your truth, and overflowing with Your love. I vow to bring my childen up in a godly way."
Fresh hope is waiting for readers of this book. I know lots of mothers who could enjoy this as a gift. It would fit wonderfully in a pretty basket along with some other pampering favorites: chocolate, coffee or tea, scented lotions, etc.
Moms give so much to others that it's nice when a book comes along that helps us feed our own souls first. By growing in our spiritual walks, we'll have a never-ending source for the renewal we need to keep on keeping on.
