5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Serious Seekers of Sexual Ecstasy.......2003-07-19

A liberating and fascinating introduction to the historical evolution and practice of Tantric sexual ecstasy. This book goes a long way toward promoting a healthy understanding between men and women of their differing sexual personalities. Intriguing and candid, Nik Douglas' "Spiritual Sex: Secrets of Tantra from the Ice Age to the New Mellennium" deftly explores how the concept of consciousness expansion, human sexuality and spirituality are intricately bound. His detailed review encompasses not only the historical origins and nature of Tantra, but also its diffusion and practice in the Judeo-Christian sphere. The author's thorough presentation of Tantric sexual techniques, culminating in "The Tantric Great Rite of the Five Essentials", offers a no-nonsense guide for serious seekers of sexual ecstasy. The abiding relevance of "The Science of Tantra" and "The New Tantric Sexual Paradigm" is clearly articulated in the closing chapter. The works useful "Chronology: People and Events Pertinent to Tantra, in a Historical Context", its exhaustive bibliography and comprehensive listing of germane Internet sites render this scholarly book an invaluable reference tool. Highly recommended reading.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource tool to be taken seriously.......1997-09-17

When most westerners hear the term Tantra, they typically think of Oriental erotic sex using secret rites. In reality (a strange word to use in this context), the Tantra is Sanskrit and means to expand, spread like a universal "cosmic weave". Tantra deals with a spiritual sex that when applied correctly expands the horizon of the individual and subsequently that of society.

Nik Douglas, renowned for his previous works on erotica and the Orient, provides the definitive work on the Tantra with this intriguing work. The book provides a historical perspective, but is not limited to just the east or the ancients from which Mr. Douglas affectionately provides information. Instead readers are also guided through the interface of sexuality and spirituality in the Judeo-Christian philosophy, and in other western thought. Mr. Douglas also provides more fresh insight into spiritual sexual topics than this reviewer or her spouse has ever seen in any book, including college social science courses. Finally the book provides a section for those readers who want to delve deeper into this concept with a comprehensive list of other sources.

SPIRITUAL SEX - Secrets of Tantra From the Ice Age to the New Millennium is an intriguing nonfiction work that is clearly not for everyone. It is for anyone either interested in the New Age, Oriental philosophy that wants to set their spirit free, or is just plain curious about an intriguing new concept. Not only will they want to read this book, they will find themseves opening their psyches to an radically different but believable mindset. One warning : although sexual topics are graphically pictured and described, this is not a pornographic book. Those looking for a quick thrill, need to turn elsewhere because this nonfiction work is a serious tool designed to enhance the mind and body of the reader.

So much more than a book about parenting, Ms. Adler provides guidelines for succesful living! Her wit and wisdom combine with personal stories to illustrate just how rewarding and sacred the process of parenting can be, and how easy. I have always heard that the problem with raising kids is that they don't come with a handbook. Well, now they do, thanks to Ms. Adler!

I especially loved and appreciated the short stories of wisdom and vision from moms and kids at the end of the book. I felt freer and stronger as a person and a parent after reading this.

                        Book Description

The 50 million people born between 1965 and 1977, raised on Sesame Street, disco, and video games, whose mission up to now has been establishing a unique identity, are growing up, pairing off, settling down, and having kids. Now, the generation made up of Scotts, Jennifers, and Starrs (with two R's) is faced with the task of finding just the right name for its offspring. In Puffy, Xena, Quentin, Uma, Joal Ryan's well-honed trend radar helps them get the job done.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Baby Name Book.......2005-03-06

I must have looked at every single baby name book in the big downtown Seattle library. Though I was initially turned off by the name of the book, I am glad I did not judge this book by its cover. Great names, great descriptions. I even found the name for my baby in this book. And one year later, I still like my baby's name and think I'll keep it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Writers Who want something different!.......2003-05-15

I'm an amateur writer, and I LOVE Puffy, Xena, Quentin, Uma! This is an excellent book that will help you come up with great, contemporary and hip names for modern characters. No more, should your contemporary characters be stuck with names like Justin, Lance, and Alex. Instead, your characters could be called: Gage, Ozmon, and Lizbet! Each chapter header comes complete with famous 'real people' who are using the names in question. I love it.

My only peeve with this book, is the low quality paper it is printed on. This paper is a very low grade, and seems only a few grades above toilet paper. Don't let this deter you, however. This is a great book. A must buy.

5 out of 5 stars The Totally Excellent baby book for us! (not our parents).......2001-08-12

I was sitting down thumbing through the pages of another book and getting NOWHERE. I was having about as much fun as one has trying to BBQ in a rainstrom.

I needed a book that would work for me. I saw the title of this book a decided that it might be worth a good chuckle to atleast look at. This is the book!!! I love the way she has organized it. The little "Crib Notes" are a great eye-opener and a good chuckle. It saves you time, thought and the ever-so-friendly opinions from family and friends when you might be considering naming your child Elvira or Shaq.

Having grown up during the same time as her audience, Joal is in tune with the reader. She doesn't bother listing some names that haven't been used in 100 years just so she can have a book of 25,000+ names. She is smart and gives names that you might actually consider naming your child.

If you are looking to enjoy naming your baby, I highly recommend this book. If you are just looking for a name (like for the pet goldfish) then the book on the checkout stand (you know, the one by the National Enquirer) will work just fine.

5 out of 5 stars Throw away your list and buy this book!.......2000-12-29

That's what my wife and I did while trying to pick a name for our fourth and final child. We had a huge list of more traditional-style names, but had no luck choosing a name we both could agree on. So we threw the list away, got this book, and let our imagination run wild. Two days later, Zoe Piper was born! This book is fun to read and will bring back lots of memories for those of us in the 30-35 age range. Oh, the joys of feeling like a kid again! Joal, thanks for making a difficult task fun.

                          Book Description

This family sociology book provides conventional sociological perspectives, but also includes exciting new research from sociology as well as other social and behavioral sciences. Family sociology has benefited from recent innovative research in a variety of related fields. Families in the New Millennium is the first family book to integrate some of this new body of knowledge with the standard subject matter. Readers will be exposed to a wider range of theoretical perspectives and methods, and a fuller picture of family life in all its richness and diversity. While emphasizing the broad themes of social inequalities, gender roles, the functional community, and public policy, Families in the New Millennium puts more focus on the nuclear family and intergenerational dynamics than on intimate adult relationships. For anyone interested in sociology, especially family studies.

Let's get this straight: yes, Food and Whine is organized around food, but no, it is not a cookbook. The recipes and meals described in each chapter of this funny and heartwarming memoir are merely a vehicle for author Jennifer Moses's quirky take on a single year in her life as a modern mother--the year her twins were born, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and her husband decided to change careers. Moses, a journalist and fiction writer who wore black and dated performance artists before she morphed into the mother of three loud and grimy children, uses each incident in the life-affirming chaos (her mother's chemotherapy, an old boyfriend's visit, moving to the Deep South) to demonstrate to the reader that above all, she has the art of the rant down. Throughout the turmoil, Moses keeps her head (more or less), her sense of humor (at least in retrospect), and her cooking abilities. The recipes in Food and Whine look tasty, though the reader may be laughing too hard to actually follow them. --Ericka Lutz

                            Book Description

Hailed by many as Erma Bombeck's heir apparent, Jennifer Moses -- journalist, essayist, prizewinning short story writer, and mother of three -- brilliantly transforms the mundane into the hilarious in her no-holds-barred record of a year in the life -- and the kitchen -- of a modern-day mom.

Writing about the year in which her twins were born, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and her husband decided to change careers, Moses regales readers with funny anecdotes and gut-wrenchingly true pictures of the chaos and joys of family life. Capturing the essence of motherhood today in all of its complexities and contradictions, this true-to-life story (that reads like a novel) dares to say out loud what moms secretly think.

I wish I read this a few years ago....and I would have called the author up and said "let's start a support group!". Motherhood is a frustrating and rewarding stage of life, for those lucky enough to be able to have kids. It is something I am glad that I did not miss, but no one warned us....we had a dreamlike vision of happy kids and pretty experiences, someone forgot to tell us about he work and sleep deprevation. No wonder our generation was so disillusioned! Born in the 50s, flower kids in the 60s, wild in the 70s, parents in the 80s, reality hit in the 90s....so now we face the aging process...perhaps we can give our own kids better advice. Funny if you like a sarcastic way of looking at life! Read it and enjoy Jennifer! Please write some more!!!

"Food and Whine" had me laughing so hard I cried. Jennifer Moses' descriptions of exhausted, stressed out motherhood are hilariously on target. A must read for any new parent who's awake enough to focus on a printed page.

A lover of wit and a good read, I picked up this book after reading the back cover's rave reviews. I opened "Food and Whine" with excitement when I read Moses is "the Erma Bombeck of the Beltway."

I made it through fifteen pages of Moses whining about her therapist, her children, her mother, her life...until I could take her no longer. With a rolling of the eyes, I shut the book once and forever. I could go no further.

Even her therapist avoids her--no wonder.

I truly loved this book. I'm at a loss to understand some of the absolutely scathing, negative reviews from some of the other readers. Here is a stay-at-home mom, dealing with a young child and a set of twins, while at the same time dealing with her mother's diagnosis of cancer and that the fact that she (the author) never wanted to grow up and be a "domestic goddess" but rather, a painter, a writer, a skinny person in black, living in a garrett in France. I've been there and so have many of my friends. The stories she relates about the jewish holidays are right on track, as are the stories about different relatives.

Jennifer Moses is funny. I wish she were a neighbor of mine!

Ruff's been preparing for economic catastrophe for 30 years. Now he's added moralistic sermons to the cataclysmic mix. In the 1970s, Ruff told us to buy gold and fill our basements with silver and food, then nothing happened. In 1999, he told us to buy gold and fill our basements with silver and food for Y2K, then nothing happened. You think the gullible public will ever learn? Is this guy in the food or gold business? Or does he sell generators? Ruff blames America's problems on welfare and the breakdown of the family even though welfare rolls are reducing rapidly, he demonizes Clinton even though the economy is the best in 35 years, and he tells us sex outside marriage is breaking down America and causing (guess what?) more welfare and the breakdown of America, Social Security insolvency, and a pile of liars. Ruff has 13 children and 48 grandchildren so more power to him for his solid religious and family life, but it ain't exactly a model of restraint! He wants the government to be there with Social Security, but blames the government for regulations. His 70's book was poignant and thought-provoking; this one, for me at least, couldn't cut mustard.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent treatise on the subject of preparedness........1999-07-21

Having met the author personally several times, I know that he truly does walk the talk. This book deals not only with y2k preparation, but, generally in getting your life financially and generally prepared for any catastrophe. If this book falls short in any area it would be that it focuses on those who are already financially set. It would seem absurd for anyone living from pay check to pay check to aquire some of the basics the author recommends. Also, Howard paints a picture of gloom and doom, which may put some readers off a little. However, as he writes in his book, "hope for the best possible scenario, but prepare for the worst." Personally, I would love to see Howard Ruff, or someone with his inegrity to run for president. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, cover to cover.

A am glad to see an author of Howard Ruff's reputation weighing in to the fight for truth. He was there in the 1970s and again two decades later to shine a little reality on a foggy situation. Clear, understandable advice on what is likely to happen with the banking systems and social security and how to assess the impact on one's life, health and finances.

I also recommend The Survivor's Guide to The Year 2000 by David Epp as it had compelling reasons to invest in the metals because of Y2K - and most interesting - even if it were not for Y2K. With the FED printing money at over 10 percent, inflation is sure to raise its ugly head very soon. The question is what next and when? These two books clarified that for me perfectly. I am ready and will be prepared thanks to two very well researched books.

                                Book Description

Based on the research and experience of Dr. Bellamy, this definitive reference work, months in the making, is one of the most complete and authoritative evaluations of early care and education made available to the public. As welfare reforms put more mothers back to work and off public assistance, the need for quality child care in the new millennium will reach an all-time high. Cities throughout the country are facing the ultimate question: How does the government help families become self-sufficient and productive without jeopardizing quality care and development of the children? This book provides a critical look at welfare reforms and at families who struggle to comply with policy guidelines without compromising the care and development of their young children.
