If John Holt had his way, today's primers would be replaced with the large-print edition of The New York Times, cursive handwriting would fade into disuse, and talking "cutesy-wootsy" to children would be considered a criminal act. This highly opinionated former teacher and original thinker spent the last half of his life challenging widely accepted classroom practices. The author of 10 books that concentrate on early child development and education, Holt is widely considered the father of the modern-day homeschooling movement because he grew to believe that schools stifle the learning process. In this, his final book--compiled by colleagues from drafts, letters, and magazine essays written by Holt before he died in 1985--he strings together his own observations and philosophies to show how young children can be encouraged to learn everything from reading and math to music and science.
Holt's thoughts carry the power of common sense. One of his pet peeves: the silly, nonsensical rules of phonics drilled into schoolchildren today. One of those adages, found on the walls of many an elementary school classroom, goes, "When two vowels go out walking, the first one does the talking." Holt points out that two pairs of vowels in the sentence violate the rule. This is not only confusing to some children, but simply "dumb," he complains. He dismisses picture books and primers, with their small, simple vocabularies. In their place, Holt urges parents to expose children to the Yellow Pages, warranties, letters, ticket stubs, and newspapers--the print trappings that adults rely upon for everyday life. Holt's call for context amid learning is delivered in a sensible, delightful writing style. He even includes several graphics and number games that can easily be used at home. This is as good as all his other books. Very practical as well. Several other sources are listed in the text, as well as many materials and a wise way of using them.

Once your read this book Holt's ideas will be so obvious and self-evident that you will feel stupid for not realizing them yourself. He truly loves children and has tremendous respect for them and their capacity as human beings.
This book completely changed the way I think about children. It had a domino effect that had me reevaluating my entire worldview.

I loved this book. I've been homeschooling for 4 years now. My children are a little older than what is talked about in this book but I still loved it. We recently started "unschooling" and this book made me realize I've been doing it really all along. I wish I would've come across it sooner. The author is not only insightful but truthful in his findings. He is full of wonderful advise and "light bulb" moments. I highly recommend it.
Wonderful, just not what I was looking for........2006-02-21
I borrowed this book from my local library along with a number of other books, in order to better prepare myself to begin my new job as a teacher for toddlers. While the book covers a wide spread of ages, the focus on toddlers wasn't as extensive as I had hoped. Over all it is a great book, just not what I was looking for.

As always, John Holt gives you the information you need to have faith that our young children are capable of so much more than we give them credit for and their accomplishments are much more meaningful when it comes from within rather than we try to "teach".

Pseudoscientific claptrap.......2003-02-21
I picked this book up in a "bargain bin," so my expectations were rather low. Unfortunately, they were fulfilled.
The actual practices in the book are rather good. Some of them I've seen before and practice in my daily life. But the book itself tries to back them up with the saddest examples of cargo-cult science and unverifiable "case studies" I've seen this side of _The Peter Principle_.
One example: the author is trying to convince the reader that near-perfect recall is possible to achieve. As a convincing argument, she puts forth the fact that the average desktop computer has near-perfect recall, and scientists have stated that the modern computer is many years away from being able to emulate or compete with the human brain. Therefore, a human should be able to do anything a computer can! This kind of sad logic can be found in every chapter.
Intriguingly, the author includes a chapter on how to read critically. The fourteen techniques are all good, if not groundbreaking. The irony, to me, was that this book as a whole fails every test--from relying heavily on (flawed) analogy as noted above, to vague attribution (aside from a rather light bibliography, there are is not a single endnote backing up any of the many "scientific studies" referenced), to appeals to authority (the author likes to drop the name of Isaac Asimov as a "personal friend") and "emotionally loaded arguments" (the exuberant infomercial theme evident in the title is carried throughout the book).
All in all, if you already have a habit of reading or thinking critically, you will find this book hard to read. If you can hold your nose past the garbage long enough to read about the techniques, you may find them interesting.
Really Weak and Unhelpful.......2001-01-06
This book was very impractical and unhelpful. Stine spent most her time telling stories and describing situations instead of presenting effective techniques to actually help her reader learn "how to" memorize and utilize all the things the front cover totes. If you are wanting a book that will actually help you learn how to memorize more effectively then don't waste your money on this one.

This book was terrible. I bought it in the hopes of learning something better than the normal mneumonic techniques;however,her book showed techniques that were impractical and plain dumb. For all those out there looking for a good book on memory that will really WORK!!!! Try Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas's The Memory Book. The techniques are easy to learn, but will take time to apply to information for school. However, you will be rewarded for your efforts.
The book is helpful but not great.......1999-01-13
This book falls into the category of books that claim that a few mental exercises can make Einsteins out of all of us, that the Einsteins and Newtons of the world are not that much different than the rest of us. While I don't agree with this belief, I do believe that mental ability can be improved through exercises and I found many of the exercises to be interesting and helpful. I had a problem with the author's demonstration of how these exercises can help the reader. In the introduction, the author has the reader read a section of text and then she introduces a "Brain Power Doubler" for the reader to use while reading a second section of text. The "Brain Power Doubler" is supposed to allow the reader to read the second section of text in less time than the first section of text even though the two sections are supposed to have the same number of words. When I went back and checked the number of words in both sections, I found several times as many words in the first section than in the second section, which had more to do with the time differences than the exercise.
Finally... A well researched book without the sales pitch!.......1998-11-10
Folks.... I have wasted a good chunk of money on those memory boosters books, kits, and instant reading stuff. I wish I found this book back then. All you get in those high ticket seminars, kits and home study courses is here for less than $15.00(Tax included). I recommend this book to anyone. Scienice based facts, with none of the over hyped claims.

30 Year Old Freshman .... :-) .......2004-08-04
As a 30-year old freshman hitting the books for the first time in nearly ten years, I figured there had to be some kind of guide out there that teaches you the basics of studying. All of the books "what not to do" studying examples are EXACTLY the 'techniques' I used during high school which explains a lot!
I found the sections on effective note taking, listening, and reading to be very helpful.

As a college student I really needed some help because I didn't have very good skills when I started college, & I'm still developing them & this book has helped me do that. Just because one isn't a stellar student, doesn't mean that they can't become one in the near future.
Most of the advice people have probably heard of, still there was a lot of advice that I haven't. Even though some of the advice isn't new, its very helpful to go back and read it again when I don't feel like studying or feel discouraged. Good grades are possible, and they're not just for straight A students or geniuses!

Gives great note taking advice and samples. Great for something that isn't taught much in schools (how to actually take good notes so that you can have something to study by). I would recommend to everyone. I surely will be giving them to new high school students and returning students. A++++++++++
Not helpful for college students.......2002-01-04
This book is not very helpful for college students. It goes over basic study skills that most college students already know or have by this time. One of the study "skills" he mentions is to study in the library where it's quiet?!? His study tips also assume that college students have a lot of time outside of class to take notes on our notes. His goal is to have us spend less time in the library but if we were to actually try his tips...we would be living in the library.

I found this book to have a little of everything, but nothing in any kind of depth. Basically it is full of information you can get for free on most college campuses but it is just compiled in one place. It didn't really help me figure out how to get better grades
