Pure inspiration.......2007-08-21
Yet another really fine book from Timber Press. I'll spend long, dark winter evenings wandering through these pages, absorbing the wisdom of the writers and generating ideas for next spring. Gorgeous photographs, too.
Gorgeous book and inspired arrangements.......2007-07-30
I purchased several gardening books together and this one was the highlight. Not only beautifully photographed but full of interesting suggestions and writing. My husband and I were able to immediately use some of the arrangements as inspiration for a new bed in our garden. Turned out beautifully!
Enjoyed it all.......2007-05-14
The book is an excellent reference source. Photos are beautiful. Numbering the pictures with the description very helpful. Lovely coffee table book. I have told other gardeners to seek the book out.
container gardening.......2007-03-14
(This review focuses on the photographs in "Pots in the Garden.")
Picture quality is very good throughout the book, and in parts I and II ("the elements of design" and "bringing it all together") the picture content is excellent as well.
Unlike most container gardening books this one neither details container plantings nor uses captions, instead it inconspicuosly numbers each picture and then conspicuosly puts the number in the text with its corresponding description. Garden styles represented vary but the bold, Little-and-Lewis-type modernists lead the way, and even if this isn't your favorite style of garden you will probably love the containers featured in them!
What really sets this book apart is the variety of pots featured. Terra cotta and stone/concrete are great, and the English gardening books display some wonderful copper and lead, but those of you who especially love high quality glazed/rustic containers and know that it is not all that easy to find good examples of them will be happy to add this book to your collection.
The reasons I didn't give 5 stars are the book's slightly smallish size (9 1/4 x 8 1/2) and its 3rd part ("plant groups for containers") which, though it has some very interesting and unique plant picks (dark purple/black perennial clematis?), does not show most of them in containers; admittedly difficult to do, but David Joyce's "The Complete Container Garden" sure did it well. That's about eighty pages where pots are rarely pictured.
Overall a beautiful and inspiring book at a very good price.

It's Perfectly Normal.......2007-08-18
I love this book! I purchased it for my almost 11 year old granddaughter.
It speaks frankly and is very easy to understand. The drawings are anatomically correct without being lewd. The material is presented in a "no nonsense" way which promotes understanding but is not judgemental.
Wish I had this when I was a young girl.
The real test will be my granddaughter's comments when she reads it.
Honest, relaxed & absolutely educational.......2007-08-06
I, too, was really surprised by the scattered negative reviews of this book. My husband, daughter and I have read less than half of it together, but have enjoyed its friendly, informative style and already the parent-child lines of communication are solidly set and wide open.
I purchased the book several months ago for my 8 yo daughter in anticipation of questions I could already feel coming. Not a month afterward I discovered our pediatrician has a copy in her office and recommends it to other parents. I admit to being a little apprehensive about showing my 8 yo some of the more graphic drawings (they are cartoonish, but still correct), but we have been able to share many deep conversations that started with one basic question.
This is not a book you hand over to your child and offer to answer any questions later - share it, read it, discuss it together and enjoy knowing you have reinforced reliable information, a positive self image and a strong relationship with your son or daughter.
An Excellent Learning Tool.......2007-05-28
WOW - this is a fabulous book - I found it at my local library when searching for something balanced and informational for my husband to show my 10 year-old step-son.
I think the illustrations, while accurate, are not lewd or pornographic, and quite frankly I'm stunned by the negative reviews of this book. The fact that it has been listed to be banned amazes me.
I believe that the best deterrent to unwanted teenage pregnancy, abortion, STDs, etc., is educating young people about positive human sexuality.
Fabulous book if you believe in giving complete information.......2007-05-07
I highly recommend this book. It is informative, interesting, presents an up-front and broad perspective, and leaves the moral message to the families. My boys, now 9 and 13, found it fascinating and poured over it for hours. A great resource for both the facts and for reassuring the kids that they are, in fact, normal - and that there is a very wide range of both normal and healthy: a necessary message for children in a phase where they believe that they are the only ones who...
Three of Three: For Middle High Youth!.......2007-03-13
This book came to me through the Our Whole Lives faith and sexuality curriculum. It has two partner books, for older age groups. All three are excellent, and have been "tested" with several friends' families.
I highly recommend this book, and its "younger siblings," It's So Amazing and It's Not the Stork. Check out all three, then look for a church or organization that offers Our Whole Lives!

Customer Reviews:
Cartoon Illustrations are Ridiculous.......2007-02-02
I didn't have to read this book to know that it was far too much for my 11 year old daughter. If you believe that cartoon characters in explicit illustrations including people have missionary sex, oral sex, wearing condoms is appropriate for your age 9-11 year old child, then I would recommend you buy the book. However, if you believe that the subject should be dealt with sensitivity and a bit more seriousness, I would most certainly not recommend this ridiculous book. I returned the book to Amazon.
GREAT BOOK!.......2007-01-23
My daughter learned sooooo much from this book. She still reads it from time to time! :-)
Good for mature kids.......2007-01-09
This book is well done, but definetly too mature for my eleven year old son. I think it will be a good resource when he starts going through puberty. Not all the views expressed are those of my own, so I will always sit down with my son and go over this book together. There are a lot of graphic illustrations which may be too much for some families. I think it is well put together and can help answer some of those uncomforable questions kids have. I recommend the book, but it should be accompanied by parental supervision and content awareness.
Amazing.......2006-10-14
Listen, this book helps out so much it makes kids understand things and gets ride of those crazy old wife's tales that scare kids to death. The topics in this book tend to be viewed as taboo but in reality it's all part of life and there is no reason to be ashamed of your body. So keep reading people and just be down to earth about this it's not porno and its not promoting sex. Look if I was a kid at age 10 in the 21st century, there are far better place to look for porn i.e. the Internet. Anyway lets face it is "perfectly normal"
I was sexually abused because of books like this..........2006-10-06
When I was about 5 as a little girl I was playing at another kid's house. That other kid was 5 years older and MUCH larger than me. She told me that she wanted to show me something and that it was a secret. I was excited about a "secret" and wanted to see. She led me into her room and closed and locked the door behind her. Her room was cluttered like any kids room and she pulled a book from underneath some small blankets on the floor. It was a book with cartoon pictures inside. They were cartoon drawings of boys and girls similar to the ones in this book. Some of those pictures included vague sexual activities. As a child I was curious about the book and in awe of what it showed. I was too young to understand all the words and I do not remember much of what I did understand. I remember reading the word sex, but that is the only one that I can confirm.
While viewing the book she said "I have an idea. Let's try these!" and pointed to a man and a woman having sex in missionary position and another photo of a girl having oral sex performed by another man. I told her that I did not want to try those and that they did not make me feel comfortable.
Unfortunately the whole event is something that I remember in great detail to this day (21 years later). I will not go into great detail, but I was forced to perform those actions, among others shown in the book. To this day I can remember the smells and tastes and the physical pain as I was being hit and my hair pulled when not complying and to put me where she wanted me to be. I remember the weight of her body as she forced herself down upon me so hard that I could not get away or even move.
I had not put much thought into the incident in my adult years. I remember it, but did not feel the pain... until I saw this book. It is books like these that portray sex to children in such a way that they want to explore it aggressively for themselves. And if they cannot find cooperative partners they will make one. It could be the neighbor's boy, it could be their sister, or their cousin. You may say, "No, not my child.", but I believe that children will do very bad things sometimes because they don't understand it. In this books case it would be condoned and therefore it might be ok to go farther because the people in the pictures were doing it.
Technical Criticism:
The images in this book are extremely graphic and even step into pornographic. I would say that some of the images also border on child pornography (and I am the type of person who thinks that it is ok for young toddlers to pose in underpants for clothing ads and that taking nudie photos of their little babies and funny little 2 year olds playing in the bathtub is just fine). They display people having sex and children masturbating or playing with themselves. There are far more nude photos of both sexes than needed for education and cartoons are not an accurate visual for anatomy. The birthing section just did not look right.
Additional Description:
I am typically a very liberal person. I know that many kids will figure out and practice masturbation and tend to figure it out without being told how. I believe in sexual education starting around 3rd grade. Sooner if you want to tell your kids how cats and dogs make the cute babies or how chicks are born. I believe that this all should be taken on a very clinical level. It is after all a very scientific occurrence. It may seem boring for the child to learn and they may not be interested. Don't push them. They are not interested because they are just not ready for it. They will remember what they need and you can provide a clinical informational book on the shelf for them that they know about. Then they can peruse the matter on their own volition. Kids don't need to be encouraged to have sex or engage in sexual activities. Humans have been doing this for thousands of years and never needed any form of encouragement to get there. Sure educate them, then if they forget and want to refresh their minds, just make sure and leave them the capability to find out on their own.
There are healthy books for teaching children sexual education.
Despite what others may think. I just don't want to see what happened to me to happen to other children. I believe that books like these should be burned.
As another note: I hope the author is just ignorant, stupid, or innocent and not just sick.
