PARKS.......2007-02-18
First of all let me state catagorically that this book is hella overpriced..it's a VERY thorough book on the parks the author decided to cover..quite an eclectic selection. Where was the Bois de Bologne, Hyde Park, Fairmont Park, Hermann Park, Golden Gate Park...???..For this amount of money, I would expect every major urban park in the world to be included..certainly more of the great American Parks...and frankly Hyde Park and the Bois are arguably the most famous in the world, the great Central Park, Prospect Park, and the Teirgarten are included thankfully, but this is hardly comprehensive, the parks he does cover, he goes very indepth and the images are adequate..but get real, the price of this book is in a word: outrageous
Invaluable reference.......2001-10-11
An invaluable reference book for those interested in urban park design. Tate has surveyed 20 city parks in Western Europe and North America ranging from tiny Paley Park New York to the whole of the Minneaplois Park system. He has described each systematically under the heads of History, Development, Planning and Design, Management and Usage, and Plans for the future, and then drawn conclusions.
He knows his stuff; he sent out questionnaires to the parks managers in 1987 and 1998 and the book is generously illustated in colour with photographs by the late Martin Jones, again taken over two decades. This is a bit of a labour of love, Tate's magnus opus is a must for any academic landscape or planning library. It is not a light read, nor is it a historical account of park design (though the the page 1 thumbnail ouline of two centuires of park design on page 1 is a model of its kind). But it does give a fair and impartial landscape architect's critique.
Each park is accompanied by a line plan. It's a bit pricey and very Anglo-Saxon in world view, but if this is really your subject then do buy it or order a copy for your library. Pity to mix metric and imperial, and Richard Haag's Gasworks Park in Seattle (see p.114) was not the source of the Latzs' design for Duisburg Nord Landschaftspark (Latz's Hafeninsel Burgerpark, Saarbrucken from the 1980's was the source).

Taking it for granted .......2007-09-21
When we are at home in SF, our family has spent time in some part of Golden Gate National Park at LEAST once a week for many years. Amy and the others whose largely untold story this book recounts and who protected this remarkable place cannot be thanked adequately. It is a case study of citizen activism, told in an appropriately understated and detailed way (though it is less than the compelling read it would have been if it were morphed into the script of a Docudrama -I'm thinking maybe Kathleen Quinlan as Amy?). It seems that there was all kinds of serendipity but the underlying successes and the dedication of these folks, without whom it would NEVER have happened (including a class of politicians, looking out for the future, who I don't see in today's politics) is something to be admired, studied and recreated.
Bonus: Richard Nixon, visiting SF during his reelection campaign, took a short boat trip out into the Gate and declared his support for legislation that would establish the Park. There is a photo of him on the boat looking more relaxed and happy than in anything I have ever seen other than a family photo. I'd like to think it was the setting and the idea that helped him feel that way.
In any case, when I am on Thornton Beach with the dog (under voice command and ignoring the Snowy Plovers) or running in the Headlands (once the proposed site of a 30,000 resident planned community!) or hiking on Sweeny Ridge or at an event at the Presidio, I always try to remember the many years of hard work that I learned about from Ms. Myer and Mr. Delehanty.

The rapid growth of nineteenth-century English cities produced leafy suburbs, and an occasional feature of these was the development of the estate park of modestly secluded Victorian villas. To preserve their valued amenities, such parks bound the middle-class owners of houses within them by restrictive legal covenants. The documents relating to such parks are often inaccessible, but for three of them in Liverpool, the available records enable their early history to be studied.
The first part of this book deals with the legal basis and evolution of the restrictive covenant, a device still of considerable importance in housing development and amenity protection across England. The second part deals individually with the three Liverpool parks, the social reasons for their foundation and growth, and the problems that beset the entrepreneurs who established them in the mid-nineteenth century (and often then lived in them) during the early years of the parks’ existence. After more than a hundred years, all three of the parks studied continue not only as highly favored residential areas, but also as exemplars of the success of the deployment of the restrictive covenant.

William Glasser's book provides valuable insight into the dynamics of parent-teen relationships, and he offers a jargon-free approach that focuses on building the relationship. Glasser offers no magic formula, but parents reading this book will gain a better understanding of their teenager, and, more importantly, begin to understand why the things they are doing now aren't working, and what they might be able to do instead. When neither permissive parenting nor "tough love" have worked (they seldom do, in the long run), this book offers a third way. After reading it, the approach just makes so much sense: at its core is a fundamental approach to all positive relationships, in fact.

A Must-Read for all moms and teenage daughters!.......2006-02-13
All Moms....if you're even remotely interested in this book, I would recommend it very highly. My daughter & I began to have many conflicts before she became a teenager. I kept hoping things would get better eventually, but they weren't. I really felt like I was at my wit's-end. In my online searching, I purchased this & read it as soon as I got it. I am not saying it has solved all problems between my daughter & me, but it has really helped me to understand things from her point of view. It is so well-written & so insightful! I am definitely going to order some as gifts for my friends who have daughters. I could go on & on but I'd rather just encourage you to get on with ordering it.

I've bought many books trying to understand this passage in my and my daughter's life, and I needed to buy only this book. It confirmed with text what I was feeling and thinking and gave me a better perspective of her teenage life, which I had either forgotten or not come to grips with in these millennium years. I say the same about Wonderful Ways to Love a Teen, a companion book.

This book is a true one-of-a-kind. Open, honest, and real, this book is full of practical ways that mothers and daughters can learn from each other to create a strong and loving relationship during the teen years. Each chapter begins with a true senerio that all mothers and daughters can relate to, (like the desire for body-piercings, learning/teaching to drive, dating/boys, etc.) then Judy and Amanda take time sharing each of their perspectives on the situation. The wonderful thing about this book is that it has both the mother's and the daughter's voice. The book is also beautifully designed on the inside with quotes, interesting facts, quizes and activites for mothers and daughters to enjoy together. I gaurentee that all teenage girls and their mothers will love this book!

This book was great!!
Don't let the year the book was written make your decision to buy because the information that Dr. Ginott provides in this book is relevant to our teenagers today. He provides solid advice along with senarios of how to deal with particular situations. This is not a book that you have to read from cover to cover, you can start anywhere in the book depending on the situation at hand.
This is definitely a must have for all parents and educators.
