5 out of 5 stars Firefighting in the olden days.......2006-01-03

This book describes a seasonal firefighters job in 1977. This was before the advent of much of the specialized equipment used today. He also capture the essencial conflict between the resource/ranger staffs and real live firefighters. Reading this book I can feel the B2 unit digging into my back from my green canvas backpack.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book I've read on forest firefighting.......1998-10-29

This is a great book, written not from a journalistic point of view nor from an official point of view, but from that of somebody who was a fire boss for over a decade on the Grand Canyon's North Rim fire crew. Written as fiction, although it is based on actual events with only the names changed. Edward Abbey, who worked in a fire tower on the North Rim for a couple of seasons, makes a thinly-disguised cameo appearance here as "Abner". Effectively captures the work, the culture, and the humor of forest firefighters in a way that no other book I've read has. If you're at all interested in the subject I'd recommend picking this up.

2 out of 5 stars Read with discretion..........2006-11-30

This book does offer some sound advice, but one must sift through the pages with incredible jurisdiction. Here are some red flags, the first of which caused me to stop reading the book:

      1. Dr. Leman makes the point that women should strive to resume a sex life as soon as possible in order to maintain marital bonds. While resuming intercourse is of course important, he asserts that this can occur as soon as bleeding stops, which may be as little as 14 days. This is horrifying advice! Standard medical advice for resuming intercourse is in the ballpark of six weeks. Many doctors even encourage a postpartum exam in advance. Isn't it just as important [for a marriage] for a husband to be patient in allowing his wife to physically and emotionally recover? Yes, he's likely gone without, but wasn't the reward worth it? A woman has just endured nine months of carrying a child, accompanied by a massive physical trauma. For his wife's sake, he can just DEAL for a couple of months! It's not like she's asking him to be permanently celibate.

      2. Many points Dr. Leman makes seem terribly counter-intuitive, like allowing a baby to fuss so that s/he doesn't develop a habit of doing so to meet his/her needs. As fussing is one of few means for an infant to communicate, this advice, to me, makes little sense. I personally want my baby to know he can trust me.

      3. The author so frequently uses the word "hedonistic" in reference to children that I began to wonder if there wasn't an innate power struggle at play.

      4. Dr. Leman is indeed a God fearing man and makes many references to this fact. This may leave those of non-Christian values a little cold.

      5. This is definitely not the book for any mother hoping to return to work in any fashion. While he says that he doesn't want any woman to feel guilty, this seems like lip service. It is very judgemental. He indicates that in his early career he was able to support his family on a modest income...which in the 1980's was not so modest at all. Beware.

      6. It is very difficult to discern the science of psychology and personal opinion. I am not a psychologist, but fear that Dr. Leman passes off many of his personal views as sound practice. I wish he had cited some of his information.

1 out of 5 stars Warning: Never read a "first time moms" book written by a man.........2006-09-20

I should have known not to read a book about First Time Moms written by a man - psychologist or not. He has a very strong viewpoint on moms not working Full Time outside of the home. If you are a mom who chooses to do so, reading this book(and that chapter in particular) may cause you to feel like you aren't making enough 'sacrifices' as he puts it, for your child. He is very anti-daycare and seems to lump all daycares into one group. I really, really disliked this book. Save yourself the time and read the Girlfriend's Guide instead of this man's old fashioned viewpoints that just don't work with today's families. Being a good parent is more than being home during the day to "make lunches for your child" or 'bandage their knee" in my opinion...

1 out of 5 stars Working mothers BEWARE!.......2006-09-12

I bought this book after a friend recommended it to me. I have to say that I'm sorry that I did. The book advises first time parents that at least one parent should stay home full time. For a second it actually made me to start to feel guilty for wanting to work outside the home....for only a second though. It also goes on to say that the family should sacrafice and live on one income. I personally feel that my husband and I are setting a good example for our children since both of us are working and contributing equally to the household. After reading Lehman's opinion on this, I decided there was no need to continue reading.....don't waste your money on this one!

2 out of 5 stars If you plan to work out of the home - watch out!!!.......2006-08-18

Dr. Lehman will step on your independent toes and leave them broken and bruised!

I purchased this book just after becoming a first-time mom a few months back. I enjoyed cruising along in this book full of some good advice until everything came to a screeching halt at Chapter 6 where Dr. Lehman, quite frankly, states that I am letting someone else raise my children because I am a working mother.

The entire chapter was full of his own opinions stated as fact and his reminiscing of his own childhood and how one day his mother told him to fix himself a sandwich and he said something to the effect of, "Oh, but it tastes so much better when you make it for me." At which time she then proceeds to fix him his sandwich. That's one more man in this world that can't fix his own sandwich!

I, for one, quickly realized that Dr. Lehman believes that a woman's place is in the home regardless of financial situations, her independence and her sense of self. To work outside the home, inside the home, or to be a stay-at-home mom is up to each individual family and what works for others may not work for some.

I wish I had my money back that I spent on this book. The money that I made "while someone else was raising my children" as I educate the youth of our country every day. My own money which I made - that allowed me to purchase Dr. Lehman's book in the first place.

2 out of 5 stars Not for AP parents.......2006-03-09

There was some helpful, interesting advice in this book, but so much of it went against my basic instict and attachment parenting style. For example, he tells mothers that they need to get out of the house and leave the baby with a sitter in the first 10 days. It's important, he says, that the baby learn that mom won't always be there. A baby needs to learn that at 10 days!? Shouldn't they learn at that point that mom WILL be there, so they feel secure and loved? He also calls babies hedonistic manipulators, saying if you pick them up whenever they fuss, they'll just learn to fuss. I believe in listening to the baby's cries and realizing they cry for a reason. Infants don't have the ability to manipulate. I didn't finish the book because after these tidbits, I didn't trust any other advice he had to offer. Glad I got it from the library.

5 out of 5 stars Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me?.......2007-01-12

Melanie has taken many real life accounts of new mothers and given direction on how to handle their issues. Working with families all the time as a birth doula, I don't usually see the "other" side of birth - the newborn care. Now I have a resource to share with families having these problems.

4 out of 5 stars Debunking the Myths.......2006-11-04

Postpartum Doula Melanie Bowden shares a collection of new mother interviews in her new book "Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me?" Aimed at debunking several motherhood myths, her book shows that life after pregnancy isn't all smiling babies and easy times. New moms from all walks of life share their experiences from being single and married, young and old, delivery at a hospital and at home, as well as both uncomplicated and surgical births. Further, each account has its own unique set of problems - mild to severe postpartum depression, breastfeeding issues, sleep deprivation, annoying visitors, post-delivery health problems, and more.

Bowden does well in bringing many problems to light, many of them embarrassing for the new mom to discuss. In each, the mother had never been made aware of the problems that could arise until she was actually experiencing them. Much of the disappointment in the book comes from an unrealistic expectation of delivery or babies and a lack of knowledge obtained during the pregnancy. Bowden notes that new moms can feel so much stress to be a `supermom' - being able to do it all - that they ignore the signs that they need help. Feeling like a bad mother, incompetent, or not worthy can keep problems locked inside and weigh heavily on the mom's mental state and relationships with her husband or family.

Although sometimes feeling like a 143-page commercial for doulas, "Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me?" is an informative book on the harsh realities of motherhood. Bowden includes further reading recommendations and urges those mothers that are experiencing similar problems to seek help. Motherhood is much more difficult than most imagine and moms-to-be and new mothers cannot overeducate themselves on the only certainty in child rearing - anything can happen.

--Vicki Landes, author of "Europe for the Senses - A Photographic Journal"

      5 out of 5 stars it's true!.......2006-11-03

This book is so helpful because it reveals the UNtruths new mothers - all mothers, really - believe: that they have to be perfect, that it will be an easy and natural transition, that breastfeeding is pure bliss, or at least the finest bonding ever. The reality is, motherhood is a beautiful thing, a wonderful privelege and GIFT from God, but it is HARD! The first months are exhausting, bewildering, frustrating, and just plain hard. Read this book to find out you're not the only one struggling! It's hard for all of us. Melanie did a great job of exposing the myths and therefore validating all of us that we are doing the best we can and that is all we need to worry about.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE for new or expecting mothers........2006-10-14

A highly recommended book! Written clearly, it is a very realistic and informative book that will help many women understand better what they may be going through. Guys: if you love your wife and you're starting a family, don't hesitate a second: get her this book, as she'll surely appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift for a Mom-to-be.......2006-10-07

Need the perfect gift for a shower or a new mother? This is it! This book doesn't sugarcoat being a mom -- it tells it like it is from the perspective of several different women. Also, it gives valuable information and suggestions from other moms who have been in your shoes: ask for help, don't be afraid to ask questions, get a little time away from your newborn and pamper yourself.

Melanie Bowden captured the very essence of motherhood -- and why it's a difficult, yet most rewarding journey.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it! The most useful book for all new moms........2007-07-18

I, like most first time moms to be read all the typical books (What to Expect, The Girlfriend's guide, etc). This was by far the most useful and it covered from labor forward which the other books lacked. I read it about 2 weeks before my due date and used it as a reference countless times in those first couple months after the baby came home. Thanks so much for your insight Wendy!

5 out of 5 stars Poignant and Honest View of Labor, Delivery and Parenthood.......2005-03-01

First Time Mom was the BEST book I read during my pregnancy. It was honest, entertaining and informative. At one point or another, all the other pregnancy books I read gave me some level or paranoia. Not this book! It actually got me excited me about going into labor and all the amazing moments that led up to the birth of my son. When I returned home from the hospital, I went back to re-read certain chapters to help me with breast feeding, sleeping, etc. and remind myself that I wasn't alone in this journey.

Having a baby is the most amazing experience a mother can have and this book translated those emotions wonderfully. I plan to re-read now that I am pregnant again!

5 out of 5 stars This was the best!.......2004-07-01

I found this book at my local library and kept it out for two months. The advice was amazing and real. This is a must read for every first time mom. The lists at the back were a great way to get organized before the big day.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent...I highly recommend it!.......2004-03-18

This book helped me through what could have been an unbearable time in the hospital. Even though I ended up having a cesarean delivery, this book really helped see what labor and delivery is, as well as what to expect when I got home. I applaud the author on her honesty and candidness. She really made labor and delivery bearable and VERY enjoyable to read about. The other books out there are too technical, this one is easy to read and understand. She offers fantastic tips throughout the chapters making it easy to use for reference later. I even recommended this book to my sister who gave birth before reading this book...she too found it very informative and fun to read. We would like to see another book from this author in terms of what a first time mom should expect the first year.

5 out of 5 stars The most helpful book on being a new mom I have ever read!!.......2003-06-13

I owe Wendy Beahn, the author of this book, a huge thank you for having written this. At 36 weeks of pregnancy, I have read just about every book on pregnancy and childbirth but I felt that nothing I had read had prepared me for the realities of what REALLY to expect during labor and after I give birth. After reading Wendy's book, I was so relieved in that I know what to expect. Wendy tells it like it is; her honest and forthright approach will be appreciated by anyone who reads this book. The checklists and summaries at the end of each chapter are indispensable. This book is an incredible resource, and enjoyable reading. I could not put it down once I started reading it. Kudos to Wendy Beahn for writing a book with a fresh approach. This book made me laugh and cry alternately, and Wendy Beahn is the girlfriend that all of us pregnant women wish we had - the one who truly tells it like it is. If you are pregnant or even thinking about having a child, DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS INCREDIBLE BOOK!!! It should be required reading for fathers as well!

      Book Description

Tales from the Mom Front offers an insightful and engaging look at the early years of parenthood from the perspective of a first-time mother. Author and family therapist Rebecca Martorella chronicles her journey from pregnancy to preschool with a dose of realism and wit that reads like a conversation with a good friend.

Unlike advice books that outline what to expect from parenthood, Martorella shares the unexpected moments that have parents everywhere wondering, "is it just me?" Stories include:

and more. She reveals her mistakes and victories and encourages parents to trust their instincts, laugh at their blunders, and release themselves from the pressure to be a "perfect" parent.

Tales from the Mom Front began as a newspaper column that earned praise from new and experienced parents and grandparents alike. Parents find a sympathetic voice in the author and are relieved to learn that they are not alone in their daily confusion and joy.
