4 out of 5 stars Really wonderful, but..........2000-10-21

Truly, a fine book, but I doubt it's for beginners. After a brief (30 page) culture and environment description and introduction, there's a list of the miniature orchids you can (possibly) grow...but here is the crux of the problem. The plants are described, but it seems as if the descriptions are simply being quoted from some unknown source; mostly there are no culture descriptions. Most orchids aren't all that cheap, and most growers like to do research on what they're going to buy. Temperature, humidity, resting period, etc are all important...and unless you can do a search on some of these true rarities, the money (and the search time) will be simply wasted. There's simply nothing about them other than the descriptions.

                    Book Description

Here is a family guide to classic novels, contemporary fiction, myths and legends, science fiction and fantasy, folktales, Bible stories, picture books, biographies, holiday stories, and many other books that celebrate virtues and values.

There are more than 300 titles to choose from, each featuring a dramatic story and memorable characters who explore moral ground and the difference between what is right and what is wrong. These books will capture your child's imagination, and conscience as well-whether it is Beauty pondering her promise to Beast, mischievous Max in Where the Wild Things Are, the troubled boys of Lord of the Flies, generous Mr. Badger in The Wind in the Willows, or the courageous struggles of such real-life characters as Frederick Douglass and Anne Frank.

With entries arranged by category and reading level, there is something here for all readers-from preschoolers to teenagers-whatever their tastes may be. Each entry features a complete plot summary and publisher information so that you can find the book with ease in your local library or bookstore. It's not always easy to teach a child the difference between right and wrong, but stories-whether they are based on fantasy or rooted in real life-can speak to children more eloquently than any list of dos or don'ts and can impart moral values as they nurture a child's imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Choosing Books.......2007-10-04

This is an excellent book. It has chapters on various aspects of reasing as well as an annotated list of recommended books. The emphasis on the role of stories in building character is so true and valuable. This is a great resource for any family.

2 out of 5 stars Where Have We Seen This Before?.......2002-09-19

This book is OK, but I think it is merely a rerun of William Bennett's "Book of Virtues", sans William Bennett. And maybe it's just me, but I think the most important and fascinating book to have come along in a long time, if not ever, and is not even included in this book's list, is Norman Thomas Remick's rising star, "West Point: Character Leadership Education, A Book Developed from The Readings And Writings Of Thomas Jefferson".

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource for finding worthwhile books for kids.......2001-11-25

The title of this resource sounds stuffier than it is. The authors' philosophy seems to be one of "less is more" -- making the case, in an interesting and literate foreword and five introductory chapters, that books can be useful and even important resources for trying to help your child figure out what makes life interesting. These books can help provide role models, teach empathy, and transport the reader to a different world or state of mind. The authors de-emphasize problem novels for young adults, which they feel teach self-acceptance rather than improvement and whose authors often sacrifice story for message, opting instead for the mythic, transportive style. I've read a lot of children's literature and still found a number of new and interesting titles here.

Books are divided into genre and then age group (4-8, 8-12, 12+). There is a good science fiction/fantasy section. Other chapters include: picture books; fables and fairy tales; myths, legends and folktales; sacred texts; books for holidays and holy days; historical fiction; contemporary fiction (post WWII); and biography.

The book list contains about 300 books and includes title, author, illustrator, publisher, year of publication and number of pages, as well as a one-page summary of the plot and brief discussion of issues or virtues covered in the selection. Also included: a list of the books, in the order they appear, sans commentary; a short chapter about the Book List; a list of twenty videos deemed worthwhile viewing; a notes section in case you want to delve deeper; and an index. The index is the weak link here. For example, on page 35, one sentence ends " ... just as most good parents, whatever their views on censorship, tend to buy their children books by A. A. Milne and Mark Twain rather than books by the Marquis de Sade." Then the Marquis de Sade is in the index (!) while useful subject terms, like 'loneliness' and 'friendship', are not. Later editions should include a thorough subject index.

A good companion book to Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook, and a valuable resource for anyone mentoring children. The commentaries are thoughtful and well written.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to Books Worth Reading.......2001-11-10

As another reviewer pointed out, the title and subtitle of this book may put people off. But this isn't a book that applies a preachy sort of moralism to the task of building a child's character through literature. Far from it. It's a very valuable guide to books that have, and will, stand the test of time as classics. I discovered many wonderful books through this guide and had a great time reading them to my children. The best children's literature is as satisfying on an adult level as it is for the child.

This book is valuable not only for the lists and summaries of good books for children (grouped by age level and category) that takes up most of its pages. The first 60 pages contain five short chapters on the importance of reading for children and of selecting the sort of books that will build their character and intellect. It explains why it does matter what your child reads (not just that they read). Don't skip this reading. No matter how convinced you are of the importance of good literature for a child's development, your conviction and understanding will deepen by reading what the authors have to say in this introductory material.

The fifth chapter has some especially useful guidelines on selecting and sharing good books. Distinguish between issues and virtues: "Having enlightened opinions is no substitute for having character". "Good books are people centered, not problem centered." Context of behavior portrayed in a book is crucial. "Character building books are not simply about good people doing good things. ... The question is not whether unethical behavior is present, but how it is presented". Look for stories that "open up new possibilities and stretch the imagination. ... be wary of stories that focus exclusively on narrow teen or preteen preoccupations, or those that offer nothing more than the therapeutic reassurance that everything is okay". "Look for books in which the main character grows". There is an education here to help you discern for yourself the quality of children's literature. There is also some good advice on how to read to your children; a good list of "do's and don't's" that make reading aloud more productive an fun. It won't be long before your kids are turning off the TV and asking you to read to them. You will have plenty of good material to draw from with this book as your guide.

                    5 out of 5 stars Character Building.......2001-10-01

It's important for people of all ages to be concerned about character and moral values, especially in these modern days. Themes of classic stories have not really been improved upon over the years; wisdom is timeless. I also recommend Storybook Mentors, Grown-up Wisdom From Children's Classics.

                    Book Description

One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is a strong sense of personal values. Helping your children develop values such as honesty, self-reliance, and dependability is as important a part of their education as

teaching them to read or how to cross the street safely. The values you teach your children are their best protection from the influences of peer pressure and the temptations of consumer culture. With their own values clearly defined, your children can make their own decisions -- rather than imitate their friends or the latest fashions. In Teaching Your Children Values Linda and Richard Eyre present a practical, proven, month-by-month program of games, family ctivities, and value-building ecercises for kids of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Gift.......2007-06-13

Teaching Your Children Values is one of those rare books that outgrows trends, critics, and what is currently popular in the way of teaching and parenting. This book, written by Linda and Richard Eyre, is full of stories, games, and activities that teach values, such as honesty, courage, love, self-discipline, respect, and unselfishness.
The Eyres draw from years of experience raising kids(nine), and being active in the national movement toward more conscientious parenting. Richard has served as Director of the White House Conference on Children and Parents, and they host their own radio and TV programs, geared toward helping parents to become better at instilling the same values they speak of in this most wonderful book, destined to become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, something that works.......2006-09-19

I've read lots of parenting books (over 50 or so) and this is my second favorite. My first is by the same authors, 3 Steps to a Strong Family.

This book contains information on how to teach values to your children. We've just started using it but are having excellent results already. My kids are happier and are grasping concepts they've struggled with in the past. There is a calmer feeling in our home as we all work together to master a certain value.

I appreciate the personal experiences the authors share and the writing style is easy to understand and very well organized.

My two 6-year-olds enjoy the games and stories. They do not have any problems with them as an earlier reviewer mentioned would happen.

I highly recommend this book, but suggest you read 3 Steps to a Strong Family first. These books work and will make your home such a happier, calmer place.

5 out of 5 stars Some common-sense wisdom for parents!.......2006-03-01

This book is a must-have for parents who are worried about the effects of our increasingly values-less society on the well-being of their children. The authors present a number of important values and then provide strategies to teach these to children within the context of the family. I found the anecdotes from their personal experience--the authors are a married couple with nine(!) children--to be especially helpful and encouraging. I have read and re-read this book many times, and passed it on to anyone who will agree to read it!

                        Book Description

Making a difference in a child's life that will last for a lifetime!

Parents are aware that the emotional ups and downs in their child's life happen because of the way that child thinks. Wrong thinking produces wrong emotions, wrong reactions, wrong behavior and unhappiness! And learning to understand and redirect these thoughts is the first step on the way to healthy thinking and living.

But how do parents help their children survive today's cultural chaos of relative values? How can a child be taught to cut to the heart of every matter and find the core of truth in what they hear, what they feel, and what they observe? How do they discover the truth about themselves, about others, about life that leads to healthy thinking?

Based on the Bible, authors William and Candace Backus provide parents with a simple, easy-to-follow, sequenced plan to help their children learn to:

Stop and listen to what they say and believe.

                        Tell the truth about themselves.

                        Find the truth about causes.

Get in touch with truthful emotions.

                        Manage strong feelings.

Expose the lies that lead to uncontrolled anger.

                        Develop self-control with truthful self-talk.

                        Solve problems with the truth.

What greater gift could parents give their children than truth thinking!

Here is a book to kick start parents to stop spoiling and teaching kids that possessions represent love, personal significance or status.
The current generation of high school kids throws a tantrum when they aren't GIVEN 9 yes, given) a new car on their 16th birthday- and pay their own gas. well, theres only a parent to blame- stop buying and send them to work- thye truly feel entitled because they were raised on unearned praise and rewards- their language of love is things and they think their idientiy comes from having the right stiff. I see this in church kids and non-church kids. Wake up nation and reads this book

Ellie Kay has done it again. In this book Ellie lays everything out on the table when it comes to teaching your child about finances. Funny thing though, I learned a thing or two myself! Every aspect is broken down from age zero to eighteen and beyond!
I immediately applied what I had learned on my children and saw a dramatic change within one week. You must get this book along with her other books, "Shop, Save and Share" and "A Womans Guide to Family Finance". Your family will thank you later!

It's very nice to meet you here. I'm Jackie Ho from
Hong Kong. I'm just reading the book `Money Doesn't Grown On Trees'. It's really very useful. Actually I'm going to design and launch a class of `Money Education' to kids and teens. I want to tell them what the money is and teach them how to manage money, and also, make them more interests in math, logic, reading
comprehension, etc. This book gives me lots of ideas.
Thank you so much, Ms. Kay.

I was looking for a book to help guide me and my husband to teach my child about allowance and money management. I had no idea that this is a religious based book. I am a Christian, but I don't believe that God is the answer to money questions. Furthermore, there is not any straight forward, helpful information. This book is mostly just vague ideas. I would not recommend this book

Ellie is a gold mine of information regarding saving money and spending what we have wisely. I have 3 children and was pulling my hair out trying to teach them that the way to earning money is not by holding your hand out to daddy. I have read this book more times than I can count and have found and implemented many ideas. My 13 year old daughter is not very fond of her actually having to do something now but she can't hold her hand out forever. We have to remember that what we teach them now greatly effects their future. To have anything when you become an adult, you have to work and be on a budget. With the ideas Ellie has in her books, you can teach your children now. I don't want to see my children have a rough time when they are older because I gave them whatever they wanted when they were younger. I have noticed since my 7 year old has been working for that "I gotta have it toy", he takes care of them better and doesn't forget where he puts it.

Buying Ellie's books has been the best investment I could make to our budget. Thank's Ellie!

                        Book Description

Whatever your denomination, whether you practice religion formally or not, you know a strong moral compass and spiritual awareness are vital to your children’s happiness and well-being now and in the future. Even if you take your children to church or temple or drop them off at Sunday school, they will bring their big questions home, and it’s hard to find time and answers to address them properly in our hectic lives. In God at the Kitchen Table, Scott Cooper offers the guidance and resources you need to bring moral mentoring and God-consciousness into your home life.

You’ll learn how to use family time to teach virtues and discuss religious matters; how to find inspiration and material in books, movies, and online; and how to draw the family together to pray or to do service for others. Cooper offers ideas for fun and enlightening family outings, sample scripts for bringing up thorny issues, and insights from his own experience in raising three children and imparting beliefs in the natural course of life. His book will help you deal with problems that may come up, such as:

                        * How to help your child trust in God in a world where bad things happen
                        * How to reconcile different religious backgrounds and faiths—yours, your spouse’s, and others’
                        * How to sort out your own beliefs and values and pass them on to your children even though you sometimes have doubts yourself
                        * How to make religious teaching appeal to your children—like good food rather than pious medicine
                        * How to explain conflicts between religion and science
                        * How to teach about God if you don’t go to church

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Perspective on Spiritual Teaching.......2004-05-05

I come from a conservative Christian background (and am still an evangelical), but was interested in reading a less Christian-ese approach to teaching my children about God. I found this book to be very practical and it provoked my thinking about how to make religious/spiritual/moral conversation and observance a natural part of our family life. The author is clearly a theist, but the absence of further specifics make this book a non-threatening option for couples of different faiths.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Great Help.......2002-06-06

This is one of the most helpful and important parenting books I've read in a long time. For a mom like me who is not too big into organized religion I've struggled with how to pass along some basic beliefs to my kids. The book is filled with specific ideas and examples that make the process much easier. Just as important, it has helped me think about God and religion in new and positive ways. While the scripts on teaching virtues got alittle tedious for me, the ones on teaching trust in God, learning patience, and saying no to drugs and teen sex look to be of value. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to parents.
