John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has been heralded as a "lyrical work of nonfiction," and the book's extremely graceful prose depictions of some of Savannah, Georgia's most colorful eccentrics--remarkable characters who could have once prospered in a William Faulkner novel or Eudora Welty short story--were certainly a critical factor in its tremendous success. (One resident into whose orbit Berendt fell, the Lady Chablis, went on to become a minor celebrity in her own right.) But equally important was Berendt's depiction of Savannah socialite Jim Williams as he stands trial for the murder of Danny Hansford, a moody, violence-prone hustler--and sometime companion to Williams--characterized by locals as a "walking streak of sex." So feel free to call it a "true crime classic" without a trace of shame.
Book Description
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative reads like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction. Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case.
It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman's Card Club; the turbulent young redneck gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the "soul of pampered self-absorption"; the uproariously funny black drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young blacks dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, this enormously engaging portrait of a most beguiling Southern city has become a modern classic.

Useful, durable.......2007-03-21
If you are a garden designer or like to have a quick visual reference while planning a garden, this is a great book. I don't believe the intention is to provide extensive information, instead this is to be used a resource that is quick and easy. I currently spend a lot of time working on designs for my friends' yards and they love it when I bring this book over. The fact that I am able to show them quick pictures of what to expect is so nice to someone that does not have a "green thumb". Take the book for what it's worth....not all of them are trying to be college text books, and that's a relief.
Good general plant selection guide for beginners.......2006-08-01
This attractive handbook is a basic guide for beginning gardeners for selecting plants that will do well in the state. Plants are arranged alphabetically in sections of Annuals, Perennials, Trees & Shrubs, Roses, Vines & Groundcovers, Bulbs, Corms & Tubers, Herbs and Ferns & Ornamental Grasses. Each plant profile includes a nice color photo and minimal information on growing conditions, tips and cultivar recommentations. An okay guide for the beginning gardener - if you are looking for in-depth information, you may want to look elsewhere.

Although you would think this more of a coffee table book, it is a good read and has some beautiful pictures.
The City of Squares!.......2004-07-15
Savannah has always been a "southern-charm" city. Some of it's beauty and history has been preserved by the renewal of interest in it's squares, small parks and cemeteries. This book is a perfect companion depicting the charm of this city-so unique in the busy world of today. Not only is the photography superb, but the accompanying writing is great. A great memory boost for someone who has been to Savannah or a precursor for someone preparing to tour the city. I visited in the mid 1960s and was delighted to see it again! Thanks!
Book Description
Charles Valley’s legendary dowagers, the three Miss Margarets, have lost one of their own: Peggy Garrison, who married into a huge fortune but was constantly overshadowed by the legacy her husband’s first wife, the great Myrtis Garrison. When Peggy’s will is read, the news of who will take over the Garrison fortune shakes the town to its core. To everyone’s shock, Peggy has left all of the Garrison holdings–the world-famous botanical gardens, the massive resort, and the lovely Garrison “Cottage,” where FDR once visited–to the town’s down-and-out wild child, Laurel Selene McCready.
Laurel was like a daughter to Miss Peggy, but the last thing she wants to do is step into Miss Peggy’s shoes as the wealthiest, most powerful person in town, especially since the Garrison fortune never bought Peggy any happiness. On top of that, when Laurel reluctantly explores her hew home, the storied Garrison Cottage, she discovers that mysteries abound when it comes to the great Miss Myrtis. What clues are hidden in an old suitcase containing a child’s dress and sheet music dating back to the Southern Vaudeville circuit? Who is the elderly woman outside Atlanta who has been keeping track of the Garrison estate’s every development via the Charles Valley Gazette? And how will Laurel avoid the fate of her two predecessors whose secrets have far greater implications than Laurel could ever have imagined? Culminating in an unforgettable sleight of hand, proving that behind every great fortune there is a great crime, The Ladies of Garrison Gardens is as page-turning and irresistible as its predecessor.

Mayra Calvani -- Curled Up With A Good Book.......2006-12-03
The Ladies of Garrison Gardens, a sequel to this author's first book, The Three Miss Margarets (2003), is a light contemporary novel with a rich Southern flavour and a strong touch of mystery.
Peggy Garrison, one of the "three Miss Margarets," has died of cancer and, to the shock of the town, has left her large estate to feisty, thirty-five-year old Laurel Selene McReady, a former journalist to the Charles Valley Gazette who had become very close to this old lady.
Laurel, who up to this date has had to count pennies to keep herself, is understandably overwhelmed. How is she to run Garrison fortune--the famous botanical gardens, the huge resort, and the lovely Garrison "Cottage?" She knows absolutely nothing about business. After a little research, she finds out a new management would do wonders for the poor employees, who hardly have any benefits or health insurance, but her plans are brought to a halt when Garrison lawyer Stuart Lawrence begins to pressure her to give him power of attorney so he can continue to "rule" Garrison Gardens as he always have in the past.
Why has Stuart Lawrence been given power of attorney all these years? What kind of power has he over the family?
Parallel to this mystery is the obsessive interest that a little old lady named Miss Rain has over Garrison Gardens and to everyone and everything related to it. What, in fact, is her connection with the Garrisons? Through her memories the reader will travel to the 1920's, to the time when she was a vaudevillian and her involvement with a mother and a daughter called The Sunshine Sisters. Are they related in any way to the mysterious dress and sheet of music Laurel unexpectedly discovers in an old trunk in the Cottage?
Laurel is certain the Garrison family holds a secret...but what?
Miss Rain, seriously ill in bed, feels she can help the new Garrison heir have control over the evil Stuart Lawrence. With this in mind, she decides to write a long letter revealing the secret. But will her letter reach Laurel in time?
The strength in this novel lies in the way the author brings the south to life with all its sights and sounds. One can feel the warm sun on the daylilies, daffodils and hollyhocks; one can taste the iced tea. The old ladies in the book are lovable, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to relate to Laurel, who's favourite words seem to be the hell with this and the hell with that. Her relationship with the young Dr. Perry, eight years younger than her, adds a twinge of romance to the story. At times the novel moves very slow, particularly during Miss Rain's flashbacks. After all the build-up with Miss Rain's letters, I found the ending utterly disappointing--though I suspect this is to serve the book three in the series. This is not a book worth its hardcover price; I'd recommend readers to wait for the less-expensive paperback edition.
Read the first one first!.......2006-07-28
I haven't read The Three Ms Margaret's yet, so everything would fall into place a bit better, but never mind that. This book was still outstanding!
Lots of southern charm, a bit of mystery about who Mrs Rains is exactly and what does she want with Laurel? Why did Peggy give everything to Laurel in her will? Laurel doesn't know what she wants after inheriting everything, because she didn't grow up with money. Perry, also known as Wiener, seems to have a crush on her, but Laurel is convinced it is a little crush from the olden days.
Will Laurel decide to move into Peggy's house and assume her role, or will she take the money and run? Find out all this and who the infamous Mrs. Rains really is!
The Ladies of Garrison Gardens.......2006-07-06
This is an intriguing story that has, in my opinion a pathetic, weak, frustrating ending. This story sucked me in emotionally and then left me wishing that I had not wasted my time reading it.
Mrs. Rain's story is told throughout the Novel and then her story at the end dies without any resolution...very, very sad and pointless to have such an interesting story end so badly.
Better than the original.......2006-06-05
We return to Charles Valley, Ga., a Miss Margaret short, as Miss Peggy has died and left her estate to Laurel who no longer hates the gals, she's now one of them, albeit not named Margaret.
Will Laurel be able to continue the legacy of Garrison Gardens, and at what price? Why is the price so high? Because someone is blackmailing one of the Margarets and was blackmailing her predecessor.
There is MUCH more of a story here. The characters are better developed as is the plot.
I enjoyed this book so much more than the first.
A light, quick, and fun read........2006-01-17
A light, quick, and fun read. Don't look for much else in this book. It is well written for what type of book it is but it is still your basic troubled girl meets nice boy, nice boy likes her...she doesn't, he winds his way into her heart by helping to solve her problems and they live happily ever after.

A little book with a lot of information.......2007-02-04
This is an excellent book, full of information and inspiring photographs. No wasted words here, but facts and directions for planning and implementing a small space garden. The author has a brisk, and often humorous style that is easy to read.
Morris talks about city front yards, side yards, courtyards, and small sections of larger gardens. He describes the garden process from planning to planting to enjoying. Pruning, problem plants, and watering: all here.
This book is not overly technical but enough detail is here to get your garden growing.
A visually breathtaking and highly informative tour.......2004-01-14
Filled cover to cover with gorgeous color photography, Small Gardens Of Savannah And Thereabouts by gardening enthusiast and expert Elvin McDonald offers a visually breathtaking and highly informative tour of more than thirty gardens created and maintained by the residents of Savannah. Useful secrets for garden upkeep pepper the text commentary in this horticulturally impressive and "reader friendly" exploration recommended especially to all dedicated gardeners and landscaping professionals.
The Small Enchanted Oasis.......2003-11-25
I visited Savannah many years ago and it was so hot and humid that I vowed I wouldn't go back. This book might make me change my mind though. Savannah is indeed a beautiful historical city, filled with charming little gardens and Georgian Colonial and Greek Revival architecture. Behind some of the walls and iron gates are these tiny paradises filled with semi-tropical foliage and old fashioned southern flowers. This tour showcases these gardens, both public and private ones. Chapters are arranged by garden type - walled gardens, side gardens, historical gardens, pocket gardens, rooftop gardens, container gardens, treelawns, work spaces, etc. Descriptions are included but the highlight of the book is easily the outstanding photographs. The author also includes a "must-have" plant list for the southern gardener and a month-by-month planting guide. This is a beautiful book sure to inspire the gardener even if we can't grow some of the tender varities featured here.

Book Description
The Design Patterns Conspiracy: How It All Happened When the Gang, as well as Grady, Christopher, and the Fifth member of the Gang of Four, Steve Swillvellis, were in college, they invented the ultimate reusable set of patterns for the most complex system of interactions available: dating. Their success with women was famous throughout the state. As Christopher said at the time, "Do you have any idea how unusual that is, for guys who read Knuth for fun?"
Then the sweet smell of success turned bitter. They realized that their grades were slipping, they were no longer as interested in computer science, and that they had more than once considered careers in marketing. They realized that while it is extremely pleasurable to have the dating world by the tail, that there were Higher Considerations. The scientific advancement and the economy of the world would be destroyed if all geeks were out dancing on Saturday nights instead of debugging.
So they suppressed their work and, to distract those who had heard of their remarkable book on patterns, they produced Design Patterns instead.
The dating work remained suppressed until the Fifth member of the Gang of Four could keep silent no longer and brought forth the original WordStar manuscripts, additional notes still penciled in the margins. He asked the Gang of Females to edit and publish the work.
Customer Reviews:
Funny and bizarre book for pattern fans or those who know the subculture of programmers .......2007-01-25
From its very beginning until the end the book contains adaptations of software design and architecture patterns to the field of dating. This makes dating an engineering discipline. It is a fun book, though the author claimed on her homepage that the patterns somewhat resulted from personal experience and so there was some truth in the patterns proposed.
The fun a reader might experience for sure while reading this book may result both from his or her a priori knowledge on software design and architecture patterns and from his or her insight into the specific subculture the book talks about.
Best use of the term "private members" in a patterns book.......2003-12-26
OK, when I saw this under the tree I thought that the Gang had a new little workbook deal out or something, and then I saw that there was a silhouette of a naked woman on the front and that it was very very doubtful that this was going to help me figure out distributed programming. But at that point I didn't care anymore and it is now officially my favorite gift. Applies the rules of patterns (strategies, refactorings, all that) to dating and it's hilarious. Definitely a kick for anyone with even remotely geeky tendencies.
Way more fun than regular patterns.......2003-12-17
It's like the Gang of Four had a little too much to drink (or something) at a National Lampoon party and went home and wrote a sequel. I think my favorite pattern is goTo guy, which is prefaced with a note that the article "GoTo Considered Harmful" doesn't apply to dating patterns. Haven't tried any of the patterns since my SO disapproves strongly of multithreading.
This is hilarious.......2003-12-16
I don't know what kind of mind is so into patterns that they come out the other end with this book, but the result is very funny. You need to be a geek to get it, but if you do it's definitely worth it. It's a satire of patterns and of some fairly leading figures in the computer industry. Basically the authors say that the Gang of Four came up with these dating patterns in college: Trojan Proxy, Interested Listener, Half Bad Boy Plus Protocol, Unexpected Persistence, Container-Managed Relationships, etc. Christopher Alexander was in on it, too, starting off kind of geeky and playing Dungeons and Dragons and going on to be a dating machine.
I've never laughed this hard reading a patterns book. (Well, OK, I haven't really laughed much at all at patterns books.) Can hardly wait for the book on refactoring. Wonder if Martin Fowler was dating refactoring god in college?
Who knew?.......2003-12-15
We all know that software development has benefited tremendously from design patterns. But I had no idea what you could REALLY do with patterns. Fortunately, my partner Bert was a beta tester for some of these patterns, and let me tell you, without half-bad-boy-plus-protocol, I'm not sure he would BE my partner today ; )
If you have a brother/friend/co-worker geek in your life who is still single and searching, you might want to slip this under the tree as, you know, a "gag" gift. But it's really a lot more than that--there's REAL dating advice in there! Don't be fooled by the fun; this book is really stealth love-life-improvement wrapped up in a package that will look funny and geeky and won't embarass the guy who needs it. He can put it on his desk or bookshelf where it'll look right at home next to the Dilbert-a-day thing. It'll make every developer/programmer (and yes, even the *architects*) laugh out loud, but secretly they'll be learning how to apply a pattern language of design to... dating. (Sorry, no sex patterns in this edition, so if the advice works and you find yourself in a successful dating scenario, you're on your own for what happens after that. Perhaps there'll be an eXtreme Dating (XD) version?)
Heck, forget the single guys--if you're a woman, you might give this to your partner if he's forgotten (or never knew) how to *act* like he's trying to sweep you off your feet.
There's one more reason I like this book... if even a fraction of the guys who work in cube farms take up the advice, the workplace will get a lot more fun and stimulating! How could more chocolate, games, and toys at work be anything but GOOD? (Yes, they really are girl magnets...although they might be guy magnets too, but that's OK too... the more friends you have in your camp, the more likely it may be that one of them will introduce you to your next hot date. And don't forget the puppy.
This is no fluffy, foofy, self-help, mars vs. venus, get-in-touch-with-your-inner-whatever book. You'll find all the things that make a software developer feel right at home, beginning with UML. If you've read GOF or just skimmed it, you know what to expect from the format.
So, get it for the humour, get it for the practical advice. And for gosh sakes, go get a slinky, a couple of unusual action figures (there's even an Einstein action figure now and a Starbucks-style barrista--either one a better choice than G.I.Joe) and some chocolate, right now, and put them on your desk tomorrow.
Have fun!!

Another Brackman Hit.......2007-04-03
An invaluable resource for the quilt historian ,conservator or just an interested quilter. The illustrations helped me to identify fabric by period, style and color. The text gave me invaluable information to help identify a puzzling old quilt which was found stuffed in a chimney undisturbed for 90 years. Barbara Brackman is the author to read when one seeks information about quilts and their history. I enjoyed the chapter identifications allowing me to quickly access the fabric type I was seeking.
America's Printed Fabrics 1770-1890: 8 Reproduction Quilt Projects: Historic Notes and Photographs; Dating Your Quilts.......2007-01-11
This is a good resource for the history of textiles with the purpose of dating quilts or construction of period correct clothing and quilts.
America's Printed Fabrics 1770-1890.......2006-06-29
This book gives a very good compressive over view of fabrics in a certain time frame. While I bought it for reference I discovered it is quite enjoyable just to read. I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in fabrics. It would be especially useful to a beginning fabric aficionado.
brackman/america's printed fabric 1770-1890.......2005-09-17
what a wonderful resource book for anyone who is interested in fabric/fiber arts.
i'm a quilter who likes to create quilts with a flair from yesterday. this book not only helps me to be closed in my interpretation of that time, it does guide me through the decision which colors have been more used than others. the contents/pictures are very clear and the instructions to recreate some of the quilts are outstanding. i would give this book 6 stars!
Wonderful book.......2005-03-25
I really like the layout on this book - full color pages of historical fabric swatches on the left pages, and comparison reproduction print swatches on the right. Wonderful book for anyone wishing to glean a good understanding of what historical prints look like and how they evolved.
