Make Your Own Mediterranean Garden.......2006-01-19
I read much of the book today. I was very impressed with the information the book had in it. I bought the book for a work related project and have recieved enough general information that I feel comfortable planning this type of garden for a client. The book told of many types of plant material that come from that region. I was extremely pleased with how the author wrote about how to amend the soil to make it as close as you can to their soil.
Book Description
Over the last 25 years, Heidi Gildemeister has converted a dry landscape on the western Mediterranean coast into a gorgeous, thriving ten-acre garden. Her own experience and research have taught her the secrets of utilizing drought-resistant plants and waterwise gardening practices to allow the soil and plants to absorb enough winter rain so they can survive the dry summer.
Now this expert gardener, author of the widely praised Mediterranean Gardening: A Waterwise Approach, shares her wealth of knowledge in a lovely, inspirational volume that shows us how to create a lush garden in mediterranean-climate regions throughout the world. Her presentation of 20 dream gardens-among them an olive grove in bloom, a haven by the sea, and a scented shade garden, each with extensive plant lists and practical advice-is at the heart of her book, illustrated with more than 200 of her own, exquisite full-color photographs. AUTHOR BIO: Heidi Gildemeister, a founding member and former president of the Mediterranean Garden Society, is the author of Mediterranean Gardening: A Waterwise Approach and has contributed to The New Royal Horticulture Society Dictionary of Gardening. She lives in Mallorca, Spain.

Great ideas for the Med........2005-09-18
Gildermeister goes into detail on several subjects when doing gardening in Mediterranean climates. This book is a great complementary book to her book "Mediterranean Gardening" because it expands on some of the ideas she fist presents in that book but, "Gardening the Mediterranean Way" stands well alone because it looks at specific gardening situation in such a way that the reader will not find it lacking. This is a delightful book that gives both novice and expereinced gardener a better understanting of med. gardening. The book has wonderful illustrations, photos and great ideas that, in her own words, makes one's garden a 'personal Eden'.

Absolutely invaluable.......2003-10-20
This book is clear and easy to follow, practical yet artistic.
From preparing the ground, to creating special personal spaces in the sun. It has taught me a lot about Mediterranean terrain,
and how the plants have adapted to survive the climate.
There is no doubt planning a Mediterranean garden is very different from planning an English one and this book is ideal with its suggestions for planting, be it open ground, pots or courtyards. I loved it!
Let this book inspire your garden........2002-10-21
As a beginning gardener with a large garden to plan, I've found this book to be a wonderful inspiration and a good gardening resource. My idea of low-maintenance is NO maintenance, and that's pretty much the idea behind this book (although the soil preparation required can be quite extensive). I return to this book whenever I need to be reminded that a garden can be beautiful without being rigidly planned.
The only weakness is that the plant lists include only true Mediterranean plants, rather than including other plants (for example, plants native to Southern California) that meet the criteria for drought-resistance and low-maintenance.
How to plant a naturalistic mediterranean hillside garden.......2002-04-17
This book is written by Brits, so the perspective is a "how to" from a relatively cold climate, and the advice is a bit skewed. If you live in a mediterranean climate and are new to gardening, I don't think this would be the best advice book (check a regional book). The mediterranean gardens used for inspiration are the wild, hilly areas of France, Spain and Italy--not the quaint domesticated gardens in homes and villas along the sea. On the plus side, there is good information on how to prepare the soil for planting a mediterranean garden, which plants will likely succeed, and how to get the look they've described. I enjoyed the details about how specific plants survive in a drought-tolerant climate. There are "weekend project" ideas (i.e., creating mosaic pots and tables) that may or may not appeal to the reader. This is the kind of book I'd rather get from the library, than purchase, as the information I found helpful was minimal.
Mediterranean vacation in your backyard.......2000-02-25
If your idea of gardening is low-maintenance, informal and full of creativity, this is the book for you. I own many gardening books but must say that this is one that has given me lots of great and useful ideas to try out. Last year we adapted a suggestion from the book and painted pieces of broken terracotta pots in vivid colors and patterns. We then used those pieces in our gravel path, mixed with colored glass marbles and beach glass. It looked great - almost better than the original! There are also lots of useful practical tips on planting, propagating and over-wintering, as well as pictures of how a flower bed develops over the course of a season - very hands-on, ideal especially for someone who doesn't feel overly confident with gardening... Very good buy!

now for something completely different..........2002-09-07
I want to take a moment here to thank Georgeanne Brennan. With her "Mediterranean Herb Cookbook" she has done us all a favor.
Being a connoisseur of sorts when it comes to cookbooks (at least the ones the library allows me to get my hands on), I must start by saying how spotty most cookbooks are. Rarely do you come across a book that can handle putting two good recipes on opposing pages, much less giving you consistent ones throughout.
Yet Mrs. Brennan has done just that--her Mediterranean Herb Cookbook is filled with consistently great recipes. Not only that, there are a whole lot of recipes to choose from. From entrees, breads, and salads to drinks, marinades and spice mixtures--this book has it all.
If this is not enough, Mrs. Brennan provides information about the herbs themselves--their characteristics, how to grow them, how to dry and store them. This book is packed with great stuff!
In a book so filled with treasures, it is hard to pick a favorite recipe. Yet I believe that the Rosemary-Walnut Flatbread, if it has not become a favorite, will at least become a staple in my repertoire. It is an excellent variant on traditional flatbread (I used black walnuts and it was amazing).
I give "The Mediterranean Herb Cookbook" my full recommendation.

What could be better than fresh food enhanced with herbs?.......2002-08-14
Georgeanne Brennan lives a charmed life with homes in both the US and Provence, France. She teaches regional cooking in France, emphasizing what is in season. This cookbook celebrates all our favorite herbs: Lavender, Rosemary, Mint, Oregano, Thyme and more. Luscious recipes for every course and helpful instructions for making simple dishes elegant are indicative of Ms. Brennan's expertise.
Whether you want to serve a stylish main course like Halibut Kabobs with Winter Savory and Lemon or a fun sweet like Apple Crumble with Lavender, the four recipe sections--Small Dishes, Salads and Soups, Main Courses, Breads and Sweets, and Basic Herbal Recipes--will provide ample selections. In Basic Herbal Recipes, Herb Blends like herbs de Provence, Herb Butters, Sauces, Marinades, Beverages, Oils and Vinegars are included (over 50 recipes in this section alone).
Everything you need to know about Herbs.......2000-07-06
Although this book is identified as a cookbook it contains much more than basic recipes. This book is targeted to the cook who not only wanders the supermarket aisles hoping to find fresh herbs but also the cook who grows his/her own herbs. Drawing the reader in with beautiful photographs this cookbook includes a section with a description of herbs divided into the categories of green herbs and woody herbs. I found the hints for what flavors the herb complements and how to prepare the herbs especially helpful. In addition to basic recipes for appetizers, main courses, and desserts, this cookbook also included a section for sauces, herb marinades, herb-flavored oil and vinegars, and beverages. The last part of the book is devoted to tips on growing herbs. This section provides a range of information - from ease of starting from seed to preferred growing conditions. This contains just the right amount of information for a cook to get started on an herb garden without overloading the reader with detailed gardening instructions.

Book Description
The publishing of the Flora Graeca was a landmark event in 1830. Only 25 copies were published, due to the book’s size of 10 double folio volumes and its numerous illustrations, and it cost over £620, a colossal sum at the time. The Flora Graeca brought together beautiful renderings of the fruits of the travels of British scientist John Sibthorp, who made multiple trips to the eastern Mediterranean in the early nineteenth century to collect a rich array of exotic floral specimens. Now The Magnificent Flora Graeca chronicles Sibthorp’s immense undertaking, including brilliant selections from his groundbreaking volume.
The story of the expeditions of Sibthorp and his renowned illustrator Ferdinand Bauer is a tale replete with larger-than-life characters and adventures on land and sea. Harris profiles the lives of Sibthorp, Bauer, and other leading characters, and explores the Flora Graeca’s rich cultural and scientific legacy. Sibthorp’s pioneering adventures unearthed floral specimens previously unknown to science, as he collected the originals of such popular garden flowers as the Crocus flavus ssp. flavus, the parent of the Golden Yellow; and Cyprus’s Cyclamen persicum, the parent of the widely grown garden cyclamens species.
This new volume, drawn from photographs of Sibthorp’s remarkably well-preserved specimens and luminous reproductions of the original watercolors and engravings by Bauer, features more images from the Flora Graeca than have ever been published since its first printing.
A fascinating treasure of floral wonders, The Magnificent Flora Graeca is an essential addition to the bookshelf for the plant lover or anyone curious about the natural history behind their beloved garden retreats.
