    Book Description

This new edition of a regional classic has been completely revised, updated, and expanded to include many more facets of the joys and challenges of gardening in the maritime Pacific Northwest. 5 out of 5 stars Great advice for NW gardeners.......2006-11-03

Looking for a real look at the 'Nature of Natural Gardening' in the NW-then this is your book. In a very readable format, you are taken from what naturally grows here and why-then into how to enhance and embellish the natural flora and fauna. Regional references for geographic areas are given, so you can find your area defined. A truly wonderful book for those of us who appreciate what nature has provided for us to begin with and how to succeed with appropriate "revisions" that will flourish in these climatic conditions.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and thoughtful.......2004-03-08

This is a revised and updated version of a classic book about gardening with native plants in B.C and the Pacific Northwest. The writers, one with a strong belief in the role of native plants in ecological restoration, the other a botanist who spent 12 years as Assistant Curator in the Herbarium at the University of Victoria, have together produced the most useful book about the topic.

Written with the gardener in mind (and a gardener who might not initially be knowledgeable about, or committed to, gardening with native plants) this book is both readable and packed with precisely focussed information.

The book is in three parts. The first part, "Working with Native Plants" covers topics such as designing the garden, what to do about lawns, propagation and gardening for wildlife. I particularly liked the ideas for hedges - eliminating rows of pyramidal cedars and planting native deciduous shrubs. Even, dare I say it, a hedgerow of mixed native shrubs, which would make a more useful wildlife corridor.

The second section, "Plants and their Habitats" picks up the theme of plant communities and their cultural requirements, describing in detail forest, shoreline, mountain habitats, etc., and native plants that would grow well there and be valuable to wildlife. The third section is a regional source guide, suggesting sources for plants, further information and education in both Canada and the US. Throughout the book each chapter has plants lists and a generous reading list.

The writers, while offering a vast amount of information, are aware that many gardeners will want to move towards this kind of gardening gradually, and the book is full of suggestions for doing this. There are so many reasons for using native plants - for starters they maintain and restore our heritage of local plants and help sustain wildlife. But for those who wish their gardens to be avant garde the writers point out that native plant gardening is the leading edge of gardening today and that the focus is moving away from colour (bright beds of annuals) and towards more emphasis on form and texture. This book will help all Pacific Northwest gardeners have more trouble-free, ecologically responsible and leading edge gardens.

Gardeners in the Pacific Northwest have a fine revised, updated edition of April Pettinger and Brenda Costanzo's Native Plants In The Coastal Garden to enjoy: when first published in 1996, its focus on native plants was revolutionary and filled a need for basic information: this new edition includes updated facts. From using native plants in new ways to locating nurseries and designing a native garden, this is packed with fine material.

    Book Description

Although the climate of the Pacific Northwest can best be described as temperate, providing for a lengthy growing season, gardeners face the challenge of working in an environment that is dominated by salt, wind, and sand. Carla Albright discusses how to overcome these challenges and makes suggestions for garden styles and plants appropriate to the region.

5 out of 5 stars Read this BEFORE planting!.......2007-04-10

Finally a book specifically for novice coastal gardeners! How I wish I had had this book BEFORE I planted my coastal garden--I could have saved much time, money and sweat learning the what, which, where, how and when of northwest coastal planting. This is a comprehensive yet detailed book all those gardening in zones 7-9 should keep close at hand. Carla's suggestions on site analysis and planning, soil preparation and plant choices are valuable. Being a fellow Master Gardener, I appreciate and applaud her approach to sustainable gardening practices and her emphasis on gardening with few chemicals. Her writing is clear, concise and pleasant to read.

    Book Description

Finally: a book that addresses the unique challenges of gardening in the coastal South!

Master Gardener Barbara Sullivan provides an authoritative guide for gardeners from Tidewater Virginia to Florida and all along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas, an area taking in USDA Zones 7b, 8, 9, and 10. Combining helpful gardening advice with an A-to-Z plant guide that describes more than 1,000 plant varieties and cultivars, Garden Perennials for the Coastal South will become an essential reference for both experienced and novice gardeners in this region.

The book is organized to allow the reader to plan a year-round garden or to focus on a particular season, with sections on subtropical plants, vines, herbs, groundcovers, ferns, heat- and drought-tolerant plants, shade plants, bulbs, ornamental grasses, and annuals, as well as a list of disease-resistant roses for the region.

More than 200 color photographs illustrate both individual plants and examples of beautiful landscape design. Rounding out the book's usefulness is information on the basics of landscaping, soil preparation, plant care, propagation, diseases, and pests. Whether you are new to the coastal South or a lifelong resident, you will find Garden Perennials for the Coastal South an indispensable addition to your gardening bookshelf.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Garden Companion.......2003-12-13

This is a beautiful book you can trust to provide solid guidance on growing not only perennials, but companion annuals and vines that tolerate hot, humid conditions. Sullivan also presents lots of ideas for creating beautiful gardens in a range of sites, such as deep shade or at the beach. One of my favorite sections is called "Don't even think of growing these plants here," in which she shares wisdom on plants that are doomed in this climate. Every coastal gardener should have this book.

I was excited to see a book published that was specific to the coastal area of the Carolinas. The book contains information on all of the most common landscape plants used in the area including a month by month guide to the care for each species. It has been very helpful to me in planning and caring for my "garden."

            Book Description

Drawing on the latest research on development among toddlers and preschoolers, At a Loss for Words lays out the importance of getting parents, policy makers, and child care providers to recognize the role of early literacy skills in reducing the achievement gap that begins before three years of age. Readers are guided through home and classroom settings that promote language, contrasting them with the "merely mediocre" child care settings in which more and more young children spend increasing amounts of time. Too many of our young children are not receiving the level of input and practice that will enable them to acquire language skills—the key to success in school and life. Bardige explains how to build better community support systems for children, and better public education, in order to ensure that toddlers learn the power of language from their families and teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Making a big difference is not really a big deal.......2006-08-13

Those who appreciated Meaningful Differences by Betty Hart and Todd R. Risley, and From Neurons to Neighborhoods from The National Research Council, might also like this relatively lighter read, At a Loss for Words. At least to me, these three books seem related in considering practical opportunities available for strengthening U.S. children's early relationships and language acquisition.

Beyond providing physical safety, emotional security and adequate nourishment, the main thing families and caregivers can do to foster young children's best possible development is, as one of the persons quoted in this book explains, "bathe them in love and language" from birth to the time they enter school.

As natural as listening, speaking respectfully, and enjoying conversations with young children may seem, apparently nationally, the habit of simply talking with infants and preschoolers enough for them to pick up the ability themselves has diminished. Statistically, our children not only start off without an adequate early language foundation, they can't compensate later once their window of learning closes as they mature. At a Loss for Words is about how our current deficient state hinders children's successful development balanced with encouraging direction about possible remedies, not only in the home, but culturally

Author Bardige, a developmental psychologist, reviews recent early development research, in readable lay terms, and compares outcomes. I think she speaks helpful truths.
