Book Description
If you love the joys of eating home-garden vegetables but always thought those joys had to stop at the end of summer, this book is for you. Eliot Coleman introduces the surprising fact that most of the United States has more winter sunshine than the south of France. He shows how North American gardeners can successfully use that sun to raise a wide variety of traditional winter vegetables in backyard cold frames and plastic covered tunnel greenhouses without supplementary heat. Coleman expands upon his own experiences with new ideas learned on a winter-vegetable pilgrimage across the ocean to the acknowledged kingdom of vegetable cuisine, the southern part of France, which lies on the 44th parallel, the same latitude as his farm in Maine.
This story of sunshine, weather patterns, old limitations and expectations, and new realities is delightfully innovative in the best gardening tradition. Four-Season Harvest will have you feasting on fresh produce from your garden all through the winter.

Does this book even need another 5-star review?.......2007-10-06
Even if you don't want to garden year round (if you do this is the only book you need), it's a fascinating and fact-filled read. He tells how to garden more efficiently, how to compost and rejuvenate soil with crop rotation and "green manure" and which direction to plant rows for optimal time in the sun. There are formulas throughout such as how high a retaining wall to build to protect plants from cold (the wall heats up during the day and radiates warmth back during the night), or how many degrees to slant a bed to maximize sun and minimize cold wind damage. He tells how to plan succession planting to have vegetables year round, rather than one humungous crop all at once. His tone is congenial, never talking down or above his target audience. It's fascinating--if you buy you won't be sorry!
ORGANIC HOME GARDENER.......2007-08-04

The bible of 4-season gardening.......2007-04-18
There is nothing like the satisfaction of talking to another seasoned gardener and having them say "isn't it too early for snap-peas?" and responding "nope, mine are doing great". This book gave me the confidence and knowledge to plant a month and a half earlier than I have ever planted before, without protection for the plants even!
It lays out in simple terms variety selection, location, timing and all the information you need to be harvesting vegetables literally all year round all the way down to zone 3!!
Book Description
Elizabeth Lawrence (1904–85) is recognized as one of America’s most important gardeners and garden writers. In 1957, Lawrence began a weekly column for the Charlotte Observer, blending gardening lore and horticultural expertise gained from her own gardens in Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, and from her many gardener friends. This book presents 132 of her beloved columns. Never before published in book form, they were chosen from the more than 700 pieces that she wrote for the Observer over fourteen years.
Lawrence exchanged plants and gardening tips with everyone from southern “farm ladies” trading bulbs in garden bulletins to prominent regional gardeners. She corresponded with nursery owners, everyday backyard gardeners, and literary luminaries such as Katharine White and Eudora Welty. Her books, including A Southern Garden, The Little Bulbs, and Gardens in Winter, inspired several generations of gardeners in the South and beyond.
The columns in this volume cover specific plants, such as sweet peas, hellebores, peonies, and the bamboo growing outside her living-room window, as well as broader topics including the usefulness of vines, the importance of daily pruning, and organic gardening. Like all of Lawrence’s writing, these columns are peppered with references to conversations with neighbors and quotations from poetry, mythology, and correspondence. They brim with knowledge gained from a lifetime of experimenting in her gardens, from her visits to other gardens, and from her extensive reading.
Lawrence once wrote, “Dirty fingernails are not the only requirement for growing plants. One must be as willing to study as to dig, for a knowledge of plants is acquired as much from books as from experience.” As inspiring today as when they first appeared in the Charlotte Observer, the columns collected in Beautiful at All Seasons showcase not only Lawrence’s vast knowledge but also her intimate, conversational writing style and her lifelong celebration of gardens and gardening.

i have hundreds of gardening books and this is one i love, love, love. i will pick it up every season of the year to get ideas.
Outstanding Four Season Gardening Book, A Must For Pacific Northwestern Gardeners.......2005-10-04
This book is written for gardeners in England. For those of us in the Pacific Northwest the plants suggested are perfect. They are readily available and many do their best here. Every gardener in Seattle, Vancouver BC and Portland OR should buy this book. For gardeners in other parts of the USA it will not be pefect but still well worth reading.
The technique of layering the garden with plants that have interest in more than one season and the wonderful combinations can be applied to plants that will thrive in your climate zone. There are suggested combinations and vignettes throughout the book for all seasons. There are detailed sections on key plants throughout also. Clematis, Heather, Dwarf Conifers and many more get the spotlight.
This book is full of outstanding color photos. They are beautiful as well as instructional. Many of the plants are shown in more than one season so you can see not just what the blooms are like but the fall or winter color too.
This book makes it easy to have a garden that is just as interesting in December as it is in May.
Great Year Round Gardening.......1999-02-26
I found this book to be highly helpful for a new gardener. It not only shows combinations, but gives lots of year round tips. A friend brought it to me to browse, I was so impressed I had to buy the book for myself. I also told a few friends - that this is definitely the "1" book you want to have in your gardening library. I can't wait for mine to come, I'm sure my friend is anxious to have hers back.

Book Description
Practical gardening advice mingles charmingly with poetic descriptions of the plants that Vita Sackville-West admired. These essays, first published in the London Observer more than 50 years ago, reflect the author's experience in England with her garden at Sissinghurst Castle; however, all of the plants are grown in America and suited to large sections of the American climate. The result is a useful and gracious guide to some unusual but easy to grow plants from the pen of a poet who was also a working gardener. A Cover to Cover Classic Complete and Unabridged. 4 cassettes.

Timeless Treasure.......2000-08-24
This audio book is pure pleasure to listen to if you're at all interested in gardening. Vita wrote a month by month column in a London paper about gardening, and this contains excerpts from these. It goes through the year, season by season, in her famous garden at Sissinghurst Castle in England, during the years immediately following WWII. She shares planting tips, planting mistakes, and offers her views on the style of gardening she made famous. For example, she recommends planting masses of one plant and one color in a defined area of a garden.
In addition to her dry and witty remarks about gardening in general, she discusses the origins of some of the Latin names of plants, and she indirectly gives us a peek into some of the English culture of the "country house" at that time. The reader is superb! One can actually imagine that, had Vita read it for us herself, she would've used the same tone and inflection. I love this tape. I've given this as a gift to fellow-gardeners, and have listened to it myself over and over. It a real gem!

Best Perennial Gardening and Design Book!.......2003-09-15
I have alot of gardening books and this one stands out as a winner that I highly recommend. It is a book for beginners as well as advanced seasoned gardeners. What I love the most and what made me buy this book is how he takes his 30+ years of gardening experience and distills his knowledge into very easy to learn principles.
He doesn't talk down to his readers or use terminology that is over the head of the average gardener. His tonge-in-cheek and witty comments shows that he is a normal gardener like the rest of us, making mistakes, buying the wrong plant and putting it in the wrong place but that's part of the fun of gardening, trial and error and seeing what works and what doesn't. A great book to curl up on a couch/hammock to read and dream how you're going to change your garden soon.

Helpful Information for Aspiring Gardening Artists.......2003-06-10
Upon receiving this book, I glanced through it to see what it had to offer. I was very pleasantly surprised.
What most excited me, as an experienced gardener who is ALWAYS looking to expand my knowledge, were the many suggestions and explanations for the non-trained gardening "artist" that would help one better understand the principles of design and the use of color.
The information on the author's suggested plants for an ever-blooming garden were explicit, yet concise, and would benefit the average gardener as well as the beginner.
Within 24 hours, I had read the book, highlighted it, and recommended it to several gardening friends. In addition, I spent the day moving many perennials in my large mixed border to achieve, what appeared to me to be, an overall improvement in the design of my perennial garden. I look forward to seeing the results of the changes I have made as the season progresses.
This book, I think, offers the gardener, who might be tentative in his/her design decisions, knowledge that allows one to improve upon one's overall plan with a better understanding of the design principles presented and how to use them most effectively.
Book Description
The seashore garden is unique in the landscaping world. Here, fragile blooms thrive in spite of, or because of, the harsh elements. All seashores have in common the sun, wind, salt spray, and sudden storms, but beyond these elements, the conditions are different. This book has separate chapters for seashore gardening in different types of terrain and soil. An encyclopedia of more than 350 plants for the shore is illustrated with full-color photographs.

Oceanside Gardening as it was meant to be.......2007-07-20
If you live on a coastline and want a beautiful successful landscape or garden this is the book for you ! Living on a windy, coastal headland we were informed that nothing would grow. With this gardening guide we have a wonderful variety of lovely plants, shrubs, flowers and grasses. Landscape architects have stopped to take photgraphs; others in our area began selecting many of the same plants we used and now we have many neighbors having the same success.
Book Description
These attractive, accurate illustrations are perfect for arts and crafts projects calling for a maritime touch. Depicted are sea oats, fiddle-leaf morning glory, and other dune plants, shorebirds such as the great blue heron, white ibis, and sandpiper, and many other varieties of flora and fauna native to shoreline environments. 207 black-and-white illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Typical, simple clipart of the Seashore.......2007-10-11
Nice images of the classic shorebirds were a pleasing treat for me; however, the quality of the images were lower than expected. Yet this gave me freedom to design my images using these as outlines into something that I can truly say is my art. A nice Dover Clipart Book of life in this realm.
Sea Life.......2007-09-10
I was very disapointed in this book. I expected a lot of clip art of different sea creatures, but instead the book only has a few species in a lot of different sizes.
waste of money.......2007-01-04
These illustrations are very crude and in my opinion badly drawn. It might be right for some projects, but wasn't what I wanted at all.
Book + CD-ROM.......2003-01-30
...this collection of Mallory Pearce's excellent illustrations includes a CD-ROM with the book's graphics saved in BMP, EPS, GIF, JPEG, PICT, and TIFF formats. Have fun with the shore birds, crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms, Porifera, Coelenterata (I looked the last two up), and flora! Great to use on faxes, letters, and envelopes. This may turn out to be my favorite Dover clip art + CD-ROM collection since "Food and Drink Illustrations" ISBN: 0486999440.

A few seashore styles...would be a more appropriate title.......2003-06-17
I was a little disappointed, the title inspired more than what appeared in the book. However, it still contained beautiful and inspiring pictures and a few tips on colors, styles, and materials evocative of the sea. Thank you.
I was disappointed.......2000-02-25
What I thought I was getting was a DECORATING book about seashore style. What I got was a book about lots of ditsy little crafts projects -- but nothing on overall decorating. If you want little crafty projects, the book is fine; if you want a decorating book, look elsewhere.
well worth the investment of $$ and time to read it...........1999-06-08
Seashore Style is a great reference book for people who enjoy living by the ocean - or even inland lake. It gives one some very good ideas on decorating seashore-style.......
In fact, I decorated my guest bedroom seashore-style and it's just charming. I think it's now my favorite room in my house.
I don't live by the seashore, but I wish that I did - and this little guestroom makes me feel a little closer to the ocean.
"Seashore Style" is placed in a predominent spot in the guest room for all to enjoy who stay over.
Enjoy!
Decoratively, ruggedly, and nautically worn..........1998-07-08
...Are the objects brought together in this seaside photographic adventure, which focuses on the old and weathered rather than the new and convenient style of seaside living. The settings are for the most in the famous seaside huts of the British Isles, but the whimsical and practical ideas presented apply as well to classic "shantytown" communities such as Wildewood, New Jersey and other rugged American coastal getaways. This book is more a photographic essay than a decorating guide for the average shore dweller or the lavish beach houses currently in vogue; but the suggestions can easily be applied to porches, studios, lofts or small outbuildings one knows not quite what to do with. Children will enjoy the nature craft aspect of the projects, and adults will appreciate the help with making the most of spartan waterfront living. In my opinion, this book is most valuable as a relaxer, a lovely something to sit down with and read at leisure when an escape from the daily grind is in order.
wonderful, creative,inspiring.......1998-04-05
I encountered this book thru a friend and found it to be interesting, creative and educational on the type of decorating I am interested in. Please put the book back in print. The pictures are truly beautiful. I want it on my bookshelf.
Book Description

Book Description
From the pounding surf to the interior of a fisherman's hut, coastal scenes provide infinite inspiration and drama for beginning and advanced artists. In Create Dramatic Coastal Scenes in Watercolor, award-winning artist Carlton Plummer teaches artists how to capture the elements of the coast to make a dynamic watercolor. Readers will learn how to utilize the keys to drama--lighting, scale, value patterns, color, and more--so they can add intensity to their paintings.
Plummer also shows how to use technical and intuitive thinking when portraying subjects, and how to accurately paint tidal pools and the surf, lobstermen and clam diggers, and other elements of coastal life.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book, but not for beginners........2007-09-13
This book is not a beginners watercolor technique book. It is more for the advanced watercolorist to understand design methods to create drama in a painting, but beginners can certainly benefit from all the information in this book and be inspired by the stunning and dramatic coastal scenes that Mr. Plummer teaches through his many demonstrations and explanations of how to create drama and excitement in painting coastal scenes in watercolor.
Mr. Plummer teaches and demonstrates about things that can add drama to a painting such as using light, exagerating shadows, adding warm color on a generally cool scene, using analagous colors on the color wheel to create continuity, connecting shapes, deciding tonal values, etc.. He breaks the coastal elements into such things as sky, surf, calm water, reflections, rocks, ledges and beaches, vegetation, boats, and buildings.
It's an absolutely stunning book and each painting is certainly filled with enormous energy through the use of design methods that Carlton Plummer teaches and demonstrates in this book. I'm somewhat a beginner, but I love this book even though it would be more helpful to me if I were a bit more advanced. Anyone with an interest in watercolor can enjoy this beautiful book.
Create Dramatic Coastal Scenes in Watercolor.......2007-07-11
A must have book if you like to paint marine paintings or even paint in watercolor. Who better then Carlton Plummer to show the artist ways to paint the coast in watercolor? This book is full of a life time of helpfull information and great paintings to put the artist on the track to feeling the texture of marine life in watercolor.
great book.......2006-07-06
i received this as a gift from my son. not for a beginner, but great instructional techniques. a book chocked full of fabulous paintings and demos. i cant put it down. just makes you want to paint maine scenes!
