1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2000-07-03

When it comes to the specifics of growing plants this book is pretty skimpy. If you are an absolute beginner to gardening this is not the book for you. The book expects you to already know a pretty good amount about gardening because the instructions are vague and you need to fill in the blanks yourself. He seems to spend more time talking about building trellises, planting boxes and cabinets than he does plant growing. The book also seems targeted more toward people who have a large deck or some other area larger than the average apartment building balcony or fire escape. So apartment dwellers may not benefit as much. Also this book seems more oriented to people who want to grow vegetables for ornamental purposes instead of grocery bill savings. He spends a lot of time describing how to build an acrylic window greenhouse into the wall of a house and a glass door cabinet designed for growing plants indoors. I'm weary about that because vegetable plants need a lot of sunshine to produce well. I had to move some of mine from an outdoor patio to an even sunnier location in the yard, so I can't imagine them doing well indoors. At the back of the book he offers some recepies and quickly discusses what he calls "Mexican Vegetables" like; Cactus, Chayote and Jicama. There is also a list of 13 seed suppliers and a few beneficial insect suppliers. You might pickup a few good ideas from this book but overall I don't think it is very good. The only part I liked was the section on growing your own sprouts, like bean sprouts, alfalfa sprouts etc. (By the way "mung bean" sprouts are the ones used in Chinese foods like fried rice.) For that section only I give the book one star. Actually I'd give it 1 1/2 if that were possible. A MUCH BETTER book is MOVABLE HARVESTS The Simplicity and Bounty of Container Gardens By Chuck and Barbera Crandall. ISBN 1-881527-70-0.

2 out of 5 stars Robert Kushner: Gardens of Earthly Delight.......2007-05-23

Very disappointed with the book. I was hoping the book would have more flower-paintings since the book calls Gardens of Earthly Delight.
Although over half of the reproductions (about 50 of 80) are of abstract people and other abstracts instead of flowers.
Colorplates are small - pages are with huge margins.
If you like flowers of Robert Kushner rather then his other abstracts I do not recommend the book. You will be disappointed.

In this book I could apreciate the work of this great artist and discover our similar points of interest. Beautiful plates and good reading.

      Book Description

Joyce Carol Oates’s Wonderland Quartet comprises four remarkable novels that explore social class in America and the inner lives of young Americans. In A Garden of Earthly Delights, Oates presents one of her most memorable heroines, Clara Walpole, the beautiful daughter of Kentucky-born migrant farmworkers. Desperate to rise above her haphazard existence of violence and poverty, determined not to repeat her mother’s life, Clara struggles for independence by way of her relationships with four very different men: her father, a family man turned itinerant laborer, smoldering with resentment; the mysterious Lowry, who rescues Clara as a teenager and offers her the possibility of love; Revere, a wealthy landowner who provides Clara with stability; and Swan, Clara’s son, who bears the psychological and spiritual burden of his mother’s ambition.

A masterly work from a writer with “the uncanny ability to give us a cinemascopic vision of her America” (National Review), A Garden of Earthly Delights is the opening stanza in what would become one of the most powerful and engrossing story arcs in literature.

A Garden of Earthly Delights is the first novel in the Wonderland Quartet. The books that complete this acclaimed series, Expensive People, them, and Wonderland, are also available from the Modern Library.

      5 out of 5 stars Riveting Read...A Wonderful Book!!!!.......2007-07-17

I believe I read this book some years ago, but forgot that I had, as Joyce Carol Oates has rewritten it. It is a wonderful story about migrant farm workers living during the depression, and what one of the characters, Clara, the daughter, does to get away from this miserable existence to a place where she feels she has some power. In essence, this book is the story of a woman who is realized by the company she keeps (the men in her life)...all of them are interesting characters, and bring out both of her worst and best values ...The ending is devastating, profound...and a surprise...Joyce Carol Oates has written a riveting story in her 30s, and has rewritten it so well, and so profoundly that you can't imagine not being part of the people and places she takes you into...

      3 out of 5 stars Unrelieved dreariness.......2005-11-21

Unrelieved dreariness and misery. I kept on reading hoping the story would pick up and there would be at least one bright spot or two but there was none. There was no pleasure in reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quality of writing.......2004-07-27

The plot was all right, but I was most impressed by Ms. Oates's lyrical use of language. She has the ability to transform the most mundane actions, feelings, or settings into something that seems really unusual or noteworthy just by describing it a certain way. I love the way the the main character, Clara, sees the world...it is very refreshing and unusual. I can't really tell if the awesome descriptions throughout the book are because of Clara's candid and innocent way of seeing the world, or because of Oates's special way with words. It's nothing big really. Throughout the book, she notes the little things, like how the migrant farm workers don't care how they look while picking fruit, and how they make weird faces as they think things to themselves or how they mumble sorta as they replay conversations that theyve had in their minds. But for me, it's the little things like that that make a book really come alive. This novel is full of really sweet quotes, and the language just really blew me away.

4 out of 5 stars Three Novellas Describe a Woman's Path through Life.......2004-02-11

This book has recently been rewritten by Ms. Oates. I am reviewing the original version. I suggest that you begin with this one, and move on to the revision if you like this edition.

A Garden of Earthly Delights looks at life's challenges as seen by an exploited, powerless woman who lacks a religious foundation . . . but has a crude beauty and appeal that are irresistible to men. Through her eyes, we see the importance of being self-confident and focusing on the main chance . . . whatever that might be. In the process, her heart is darkened and her life damaged by the hard choices she has had to make. That darkness and damage seep out of her to contaminate those around her. In the end, a fresh young beauty leaves behind her a morass of rotting vegetation.

The book has three parts. In the first part, we meet Clara Walpole who is the much-loved daughter of her father, Carleton Walpole, who is a rough and tumble migrant farm worker who drags his wife and family behind him like torn cobwebs as he focuses on his own pleasure. The family gradually disintegrates under the pressure of the hard living and Carleton's inability to provide loving support. In the second part, Clara develops relationships with two other men as a teenager after she leaves her family. In the third part, Clara devotes her life to her son, Swan (aka Steven), who must stake a life for himself in Clara's husband's family. Each of these parts is written like a novella, but the three are connected through Clara.

The first part struck me as extremely fine writing of the sort that reminded me of John Steinbeck's novels about migrant farm workers. Unlike Mr. Steinbeck, Ms. Oates has a way of capturing only moments and events that crystallize our understanding of her characters and their lives. To me, reading this part was like occasionally glimpsing through a peephole into someone's life . . . but only at the most revealing moments. Interestingly, Clara often doesn't quite know what's happening since she has had both a deprived childhood and is a child. You as the reader have to interpret what is happening, which makes for a story element that makes the book read a little like detective fiction. This aspect of the book reminded me of William Faulkner's writing about the Snopes. If the book stopped with part one, I would have rated it as five stars and praised the book to the heavens. But I would have wondered what happened next to Clara.

In the second part, we find out how a young teenager builds a life for herself through the aid of Lowry, the man who helps her escape from her family. To me, Lowry is the most interesting character in the book. Ms. Oates reveals his nature very slowly, and he brings many surprises to the story. Although deeply flawed as a person, he tries to do the right things for Clara . . . and ends up leaving her at a very difficult crossroads. From her experiences with him, she learns the duality of love/hate that comes to dominate her life. This part of the book is very fine and I highly recommend it.

In the third part of the book, Ms. Oates seems to fall into clichés. Everything is so foreshadowed that I felt like I could have written out the plot in detail before reading it. There were few surprises, and those were unimportant. I would have enjoyed the book much more if I had skipped this part. I would rate the third part as a two star book if it were a stand-alone. Unless you feel compelled to find out what happens to Clara and her son, I suggest that you consider skipping this part. Perhaps you could read the first 25 pages to see how it sits with you.

As I finished the book, I came away thinking how important it is that those who are deprived of love and care receive attention from everyone else. One of the book's lessons, however, is that such attention must be effective . . . rather than simply well-meaning . . . or it will do more harm than good.

3 out of 5 stars Not Her Best.......2003-12-24

I am a very big Joyce Carol Oates fan, however, I was a little dissapointed in this one. Don't get me wrong it was still a good read and included her trademark detailed description, as well as intricate character development. The problem for me was mainly the ending. It almost seemed like Oates could not think of a way to tie everything up neatly so she relied on an over used cliche to be done with it. If you are an Oates fan you will enjoy it simply to see how she revamped one of her earliest novels, but I would not suggest this one to those who are new to her work.

      Book Description

Few paintings inspire the kind of intense study and speculation as Garden of Earthly Delights, the luminous triptych by Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch. The painting has been interpreted as a heretical masterpiece, an opulent illustration of the Creation and a premonition of the end of the world. In this new flexi-cover edition of the book, renowned art historian Hans Belting offers a radical reinterpretation of the work, which he sees not as apocalyptic, but utopian, portraying how the world would exist had the Fall not happened. Taking readers through each panel, Belting discusses various schools of thought and explores Bosch's life and times. This fascinating study is an important contribution to the literature and theory surrounding one of the world's most enigmatic artists.

        Book Description

Corinna Chapman was once a high profile accountant and banker. That is until she walked out on the money market and her dismissive and unpleasant husband James, threw aside her briefcase, and doffed her kitten heels forever. Now she is a baker working in her own business, Earthly Delights, in Flinders Lane, Melbourne, Australia.
Corinna is living in an eccentric building on the Roman model called Insula, which has eight stories, sixteen apartments, and a lot of strange and interesting people. These include a retired professor of classics, Dionysius Monk; a Dutch gardener named Trudi; Mr. and Mrs. Pemberthy and their rotten little doggie, Traddles; a pair of disgustingly thin, would-be soapie stars Goss and Kylie; and a jobbing witch, Meroe of The Sibyl's Cave.
Corinna is quite content with her cat Horatio and her shop until a junkie falls half dead on her grate, a gorgeous sabra stalks along her alley and tells her that she is beautiful, and she starts receiving threatening letters accusing her of being a scarlet woman.
Then it is Goths, lost girls, fraud, late nights, nerds, and beautiful slaves. Life for Corinna has suddenly become interesting. And she still needs to get her bread out in time for the morning rush....
Includes recipes. Earthly Delights is the first book in this delicious new series by the award-winning author who brought us the Phryne Fisher series.

3 out of 5 stars an early effort.......2007-07-02

i'd like to start by saying that i am an enthusiastic fan of greenwood's phryne fisher series, which i recommend without reservations to anyone who reads english.

this book was first published in the early 90s, but has been edited to include more recent references.

the mystery part isn't badly plotted, though greenwood has become much more masterful since this book. most of the book involves setting up the main charater's situation. corinna is a well defined and attrative character, and the supporting cast is also well fleshed out, but this is, to me, more a romance or regular fiction than murder mystery.

the major drawback, for me, in what i assume was the first volume of a planned series, is the dominance angle. i have no moral problem with that lifestyle, i just find it silly and pathetic when i'm not bored by it.

still, greenwood has always been an excellent writer, and i could recommend this without too much hesitation as a pleasant, light read.

        4 out of 5 stars enjoyable cozy.......2007-06-23

In Flinders Lane in Melbourne Australia, there is an architecturally, interesting building based on the roman design named Insular. It is home to Corinna Chapman, a Junoesque woman who owns a bakery Earthly Delights on the ground level. Each apartment has a roman name and their inhabitants are an eclectic quirky bunch that includes techno geeks, a dominatrix and a female witch. It is a peaceful place until the flyers start coming to the tenants claiming it is home to a temptress, whore or witch. The person goes from sending flyers to painting graffiti to attempted arson.

While Corinna is very concerned about this, she is dealing with other troubles. She saved the life of a heroin addict who almost died near her door. She meets Daniel, a man of mystery, who is concerned that people are dying from heroin because they are given it in its purest form. She meets Jason, a recovering addict who attaches herself to her, helps her with her baking and is the key to finding the clue that will let them discover who is behind the junkie's deaths. Corinna also is thrilled to realize that the handsome Daniel is in love with her even though she is not a size five.

The Corinna Chapman mysteries are nothing like the Phryne Fisher tales because the women are different as the latter is comfortable in all settings while the former struggles when somewhat outside her norm. The heroine of EARTHLY DELIGHTS is a determined woman who chooses her own path and takes risks on people that most individuals will avoid. Although there is very little action, this tale is a pleasurable interesting reading experience with mysteries great and small.

Reviewed by Louise Landeta for Reader Views (3/07)

"Earthly Delights" is a delightful mystery that will appeal to the female gender from teen-age to adult women of all ages. The story is well-crafted and peppered with a cast of enchanting characters, all revealing complex tales in and of themselves. The main point, of course, is who is murdering the local drug addicts and why. But there is so much more to play out. Ms. Greenwood achieves her ends admirably and entertainingly.

The protagonist Corinna Chapman grabbed my heart immediately. She is quite a loving person and lovely for it. The author succeeded in bringing her to life in all of the many facets of her personality. I could just picture her in her morning sweats baking her breads and other tasty morsels, then soaking her ample body in warm bath salts and lotions. She is vulnerable and kind, smart and savvy.

I was so entertained I could hardly put the book down--it is a real page turner. The author Ms. Greenwood is an able writer. She has a good grasp of the English language (which is sadly rare these days), and throws in many an intelligent witticism. I really like her style. The cast of characters was so entertaining that I hope to meet up with them again in future books.

As an aside, the title "Earthly Delights" is a reference to the 16th century painting by Hieronymus Bosch called, "The Garden of Delights." It has always been one of my favorites. The book inspired me to look for a print of it which I found and have since framed and hung in my house.

I loved "Earthly Delights" and look forward to more Corinna Chapman magic. I expect Kerry Greenwood will join the ranks of P.D. James, Agatha Christie and other good writers of mystery who have enjoyed a certain longevity.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2003-06-25

What a beautiful delightful book. A host of great recipes for anyone who enjoys vegtables and fruits. There are numerous vegetable stew and vegetable soup recipes that can easily be adjusted for whatever produce you have. Fantastic hot and cold soups and several healthy gazpacho like dishes that will make your mouth water. The full color photos are so colorful; the food so fresh looking that they seem to leap from the pages. Everything looks so delicious. Even those who are not vegetarians will like this book because it makes you want to eat more vegtables. A wide range of veggies are featured cooked numerous ways or not at all. Colorful salads and fruits.

This book is not just about light dishes either. There are some very rich cheese recipes including an very easy to follow souffle recipe. Try the three cheese pie or the brie fritters. The deserts are equally wonderful with an emphasis on fresh fruits. Everything you could ask for is here on how to use your garden to make wonderful delicious meals.

The only draw back is that no vegetable broth recipe is provided even though it is used in many of these recipes. Vegetable broth isn't complicated but it would be nice to get a good recipe for it.
