A Must-Have for Interactive Reading.......2007-09-20
These books are a must-have for all babies! The artwork is adorably colorful, and the interactivity of the flaps makes reading more fun; it gives baby something to do while you read.
Great books.......2007-05-25
Our daughter fell in love with these books around 6 or 7 monhts and still gets excited and selects them over others at 14 months. She has learned so much through them too! We have many of Katz board books with the flaps, and are so happy the author is so prolific. Our daughter likes them all, but the 4 here are her favorites (and "What Does Baby Say?"). Keep them coming!
Great for the family.......2007-05-21
These books are a great way for everyone in the family to feel appreciated and loved. They make the reader (grandmother for example) feel even more special. I love them.
They're also sturdy enough for my 9 month old to play with and chew on. These aren't his favorite books (that's Violet's House) but they're still great.
And I love that it's cheaper to buy the set than it is to buy the books individually! :) I love book sets.
karen katz books.......2007-03-21
My daughter is 14 months old and she LOVES these flap books. She has many books, but these are her absolute favorite. We have several sets in fact. I carry them with us in the diaper bag...there are some in the car...at Grandma's house....she never gets bored with them. We read them several times a day!!!
Book Description
Daddy, Where Are You? collects more than 70 portraits of this Los Angeles-based photographer's family. Set mainly in and around her mother's home in Georgia, where Gearon grew up, this series takes as its subject the interaction between the photographer, her children and her mother. These beautiful but strikingly raw photographs also document a story with a more expansive emotional force: the closeness and the profound distance between our loved ones and us. It is this psychological tension, as well as her direct confrontation with one of photography's enduring themes, that distinguishes Gearon from her contemporaries. Daddy, Where Are You? combines revealing tableaux, garnered from Gearon's observations of family outings and routines, with a sequence of portraits of her mother. Together they capture the impossibility of truly understanding the nature of those we love.

Tierney's Laughter.......2007-07-13
I've known Tierney Gearon since she was a nineteen-year old girl from Atlanta, studying ballet on scholarship at the University of Utah. And to me, one of the most pleasant things about being around her has always been her unabashed, spontaneous, and at times almost helpless laughter.
The first time we went out (I took her to dinner on her 19th birthday) she told me about her "crazy mother", and how at thirteen she'd been drafted into taking over the role in the family that her mother's absence had left behind. There was no self-pity in her tale. Yes, there was a childish flush of, "Isn't this a weird story? Have you ever met anyone like me? Someone who had a crazy mother?" She even laughed at the absurdity of her position.
I thought it brave, though perhaps a little foolhardy, for her to tell me this so soon after we'd met. And on my way home I reflected on how much more mature and grounded she seemed at nineteen than I was at thirty-one. I also wondered how I would've turned out if my mother had been mentally ill. Would I be so open and able to laugh at my situation? Upon reflection, I decided I wanted to be like her.
In the space of a single evening, Tierney Gearon had become one of my role models.
We've kept in touch over the years, and I had the privilege and pleasure of accompanying her on two trips to visit her mother in upstate New York (not Georgia, as has been incorrectly noted above). The first visit was in 1990, and the second was about three years ago (in 2005) when I tagged along with my dog Freddie (who's mentioned, by the way, in the acknowledgements section of this book).
Tierney seemed tense and agitated for a large part of that first trip, which was a few months before her first gig as a professional photographer. (I remember her first assignment because she somehow roped me into being her photo assistant!) During that first trip upstate I wasn't sure why she was so tense. There were moments when she was herself and that lovely laugh of hers was able to burst forth. But underneath it all there seemed to be a hidden need I couldn't assess.
On the second trip, during which I was privileged to watch her shooting some of the photos in this collection, that inner tension was still there, but this time it had an outlet--Tierney's camera. When she wasn't bringing in her mother's groceries and cigarettes, giving instructions to her kids, or being pragmatic about her mother's bills, she was taking pictures, pictures, and more pictures. And as I observed her, looking through the viewfinder, trying to find the right light, trying to find the right pose, it finally hit me: she's trying to find her SELF.
Children need modeling from their parents. Girls need to watch how their mothers behave around their fathers, their friends, their teachers. They need to see how their mothers just move through a doorway, through the world, through space and time. Tierney didn't get enough of that from her mother, not the right kind, anyway. She had to become her own role model. And I don't think she understands yet what a miraculous, impossible thing that was. And I think she keeps trying to find that missing piece of herself in her photographs.
It frustrates me a little to try to make her laugh while she's looking into her camera. She's too focused to listen to my jokes, as if her lens was a doorway into a very serious world. (Sometimes she'll hear a joke of mine but won't react until two minutes later.) That doesn't mean she never laughs when taking photographs. In fact, she cracks herself up all the time. And I laugh myself silly when viewing some of them. There's a great deal of humor attached to almost everything she does, as you'll see in this book. There are moments captured here that will probably make YOU laugh, or at least smile. Yet I should warn you: there are also pictures here that will make you cringe, make you want to look away, make you almost wish you hadn't seen them; they get too close to the bone of that madness Tierney Gearon has been both escaping from and flirting with nearly all her life.
Still, who knows what effect these photographs will have on the life of the viewer? Will people find the humor in them? The beauty? The emptiness? The madness? The solace? The horror? I think so. I think that's how art works. The artist looks at herself, and we, in looking at what she sees, find our own reflections.
Powerful and poignant.......2007-05-20
Relatively new artist Tierney Gearon became famous for her provocative photographs of her own children, rather like Sally Mann before her. With "Daddy" Gearon demonstrates a greater depth. In upstate New York, she masterfully captures her hippie schizophrenic mother in her various moods: sedate, joyful, depressive, eccentric, spirited, funny, warm, protective and dissociate. Gearon uses surrealistic techniques in some images in order to convey her mother's state of mania and in other images to pose questions about identity. Her surreal photographs are vestiges of black comedy --morbidly funny.
The images are replete with stunning landscapes, which envelop the characters (Mother, grandchildren, and Gearon herself) in lush green rolling hills and tree branches etching out soft-hatched shadows into the light. The landscapes are bound by turquoise drenched skies. In one image of pure beauty, a translucent champagne chiffon nightgown softly shimmers in the light of a window diffused by a sheet. Gearon is working out some of her demons here, as in one picture the pain is palable in her eyes. Ultimately the book is about the forces that pull families together. In a candid image, a naked mother and daughter embrace in mother-daughter moment. The book challenges the view with the title's question, "Daddy, where are you?" And the book answers in a surrealistic fashion, tinged with a tongue in cheek humor. In the second to last image her mother wears red hippie style dress and a Nixon mask. These powerful and poignant images bring Gearon's work to a new level of sophistication.

Book Description
Young Jeremiah never noticed it before, but now he can’t seem to think of anything else: his daddy is missing a lot of hair! In fact, Daddy even says that he has “lost” his hair. But whatever’s lost can be found again, right? Jeremiah’s search leads him all over the house and yard. Not a sign of the missing hair. Luckily, Dad isn’t too upset about it. So maybe it’s not such a big deal to misplace a full head of hair after all?
In coming to terms with his father’s baldness, Jeremiah also ends up embracing diversity.
Customer Reviews:
A well loved gift!.......2007-08-23
I bought this book for my niece for the obvious reason. Her dad is bald. I never actually read the book, just handed it to my sister to read to my niece. Anyway, my sister called me to tell me how adorable the story is and her and her husband love reading this to their child. My sister told me when I get a chance I should read the book, because it's actually a VERY SWEET STORY!
Top Notch Childrens Book.......2007-01-10
Fun, entertaining with great illustrations. My daughter loves it and as a follicly challenged man I get a chuckle out of it too.
Where did Daddy's Hair Go?.......2006-11-10
This is a great feel good book. I have it in my salon and all who read it laugh during the reading and appreciate the ending.
Wow what a wonderful sounding book........2004-11-30
Wow, I had my dad order this book for my little brother and me. Just looking at the cover, it said READ ME. When my father told me that it had come in I was so excited. I read it immediatly. It was wonderful. I especially loved the pictures.

Mommy and Daddy tell their daughter Jenny about where do babies come from, within the context of family values. It also touches on child abuse prevention.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I had in Mind.......2000-01-23
When I ordered this book I was looking for an answer to my six-year-old question "where do babies come from?" From the title I thought this book would help with the uncomfortable topic of sex at a six-year-old level. The only thing this book did was preach about morals and values which I mostly agree with but are not completely true to this day and age with combined families and single parent families being more common. Plus I know how to teach morals and values I wanted something to explain the new baby in my tummy to my daughter. This book did not do that at all.
A book about good values.......1999-11-09
This book is not for educating your child about sex, it is to teach your child values about when sex is appropriate. It seems a little wordy and not as forthright as I might have liked, but the message is a very valuable one.
Charming book with a moral message!.......1999-04-23
I recently purchased this book for my niece and was absolutely delighted by it. The main character, Jenny had parents who explained to her what must come before making babies: deep love and marital commitment. The negative effects of not waiting for true love and marriage were emphasized also. There is nothing inappropriate or offensive about this book. It is a good stepping stone for talking to your child more in depth about sexuality. You must buy this book!
Customer Reviews:
Powerful!.......2002-07-30
I don't know why this book is out of print - it had a profound impact on me and everyone I lent it to. It addressed so many painful issues in my life that were directly related to my relationship with my father. It explained why I feel the way I do about so many things, and released tears that had been dormant inside me for so many years. Read this if, for one reason or another, you didn't have a "daddy" - it hurts to read it, but brings you toward healing. And there's no other book quite like it.
Daddy is home..........2002-05-21
I bought this book for my wife who has been struggling with this subject since childhood, and it has changed her life. Father God be praised!
When Dad Doesn't Act Like Dad.......2001-10-27
This is a great Christian perspective on how to deal with the emotional scars that absentee, abusive, etc. fathers have left on their daughters. I needed to read what was contained in that book; it gave me good ideas on how to deal with my own family situation. The author lets women know that they can have the courage to move on and not let the past failings of dads who couldn't and/or wouldn't be there for them cloud their lives.
Right where i needed it!.......2000-12-12
This book was exactly what i needed!! I recieved such a healing from reading this book. It gave me a greater understanding of why i was having such a hard time trusting God. It is a very easy to read book. Goes right to the heart of the matter. If you have a problem trusting God,"because he is male", sort of thing, then this is the book for you. Learn how to go into a personal relationship with Him.
Daddy where were you: Healing for the father deprived daught.......2000-05-03
This is really an awesome, powerful, life changing book. The information and understanding in these pages helped me to be able to identify why it was that i was having such a hard time learning to trust God, man, life. This book changed my life. Helped lead me into the direction of learning to have an intimate relationship with God. Very powerful, hit the nail on the head, book. Read it, it is worth it. I had bought 3 other copies and gave them to my friends.

Customer Reviews:
To me, it was bad advice..........2005-07-07
This book, while it does have good intentions; makes few good recommendations and advocates things which most counselors and single mothers for that matter would not agree with. For example: the author advises letting a childs father back in their life no matter how long the man has been apathetic or univolved. She also,in my opinion, is very forgiving of the men who leave their wives or girlfriends to be single mothers, citing excuses and reasons why they would do these things and why they should be forgiven and given 2nd, 3rd or 4th chances.
For the mother who is single due to her husbands death, this book offers very good advice. For those of us who were left all alone so our husbands/boyfriends could go grow up and get someone else pregnant it is insulting. I would not recommend reading this if you are at all still angry or bitter about your situation.
Not what I expected.......2004-02-19
I thought this book would give me advice on rasing a child without a father. It did. Her advice? Keep the father in the picture. If the father could/would be around, I wouldn't need this book.
Also the parts on unwed mothers was pathetic. All it talked about was teen mothers and fathers.
how to excuse the absent father.......2003-06-26
If you want to know how to be extra supportive of the father of your children, no matter how terrible/immature/selfish he may be, this is the book for you! I was amazed this book has been written by a female since all the author indicates throughout the book is: lets see things from their point of view. I got this book so I could get practical advice on how to fulfill the gaps in my child's life, and all I got is more frustrated. This book was made to understand why men leave, why they dont care and why their ego prevents them from keeping a relationship with their children. This book is full of excuses for the absent father.
Are you serious???!!!.......2003-06-05
This book was a waste of money and the author appears to be out of touch with reality.
While I expected a useful guide of what to tell my child when he asks about his absent father, and how to make growing up easier for him without the valuable influence of a father, I instead got advice on how to grovel and push my son into a man's life who wants nothing to do with him.
This book made me angry. Being a father is not my responsibility, I can do nothing more than have an open door policy and be a good, supportive mother. This book portrayed mothers as vengeful and without having their children's best interest at heart.
Considering the author is a stepmother, and was so during a custody/visitation dilemma regarding her husband's children, her advice seems just a bit one-sided. Women do not have to continue to coddle their ex-husbands/boyfriends/etc., because they have children together. It is not necessarily in the children's best interest to continue having a father in their lives who does not wish to be there.

What a perfect way to put it!.......2005-10-26
I recommend that anyone experiencing the loss of a friend or family member buy and read this book. Whether it's for yourself or a child, it brings a sense of understanding of death, and the knowingness that no one ever really leaves for good--they just aren't necessarily around in the same way that they once were. The price is right for a simple book that helps to explain the subject of death which has become rather complex and frightening over time. Well done to the author, Ms. Eloise Edmonson!
