I have travelled extensively in the Dordogne and was able to follow along the geographic detalis nicely. An interesting story set in the place where the Brits and French fought for 100 years.

3 out of 5 stars A Scenic Route for Orchid Fanciers........2005-11-29

Mara has been haunted by her twin sister's unexplained disappearance in France. For nineteen years, she had a recurring dream in which she is following Bedie through a forest, only to find that it is not she doing the following but is the person being stalked. When she turns to confront the man, she wakes up." After many such experiences and no word from the French authorities as to the whereabouts of Bedie, she decides to search on her own for clues as to the route taken and what could possibility have happened in May, 1984.

After finding the area where Bedie met her fate, Mara finds her camera in a secondhand shop with the last roll of film still intact. It contained thirty-four pictures, so Mara enlist the assistance of an Englishman who lives there to follow the trail of the photos. Julian wants only to locate the unusual flower in the last frame. He tells her, "Although you have the sequence of exposures, there's no way of telling" when your sister took them. Most of the flowers are pretty widespread through the area. "Even the 'Bird's nest' could potentially grow in any forested glade. This makes pinning down an exact location pretty hard."

Everything suggests that the photos were taken at different times, on different days, in different locations. She looked at the backgrounds and noticed many stone pigeon coops ('pigeonnier'), also called dovecots. Pigeons were a profitable possession, for economic reasons, for this Dordogne area. I'm glad to know that a population somewhere appreciates pigeons. The GSA officer here told me that their mess can cause blindness, if the person rubs his eyes after touching it. How absurd!

"you're hoping to follow your sister's footsteps using floral landmarks of almost twenty years ago." She had found the camera in Villereal, a short distance from Julian's business. "You could be looking for something which no longer exists." For two centuries, European and American orchid hunters had trekked into the jungles of the Amazon, Borneo, Sumatra in search of new, undiscovered spedies. Bedie had been a wild-orchid fancier and took snaps from different views, such as that of the Man Orchid )'Aceras anthropophorum'), so called because the labellum is haped like a little man. "Orchids have three petals, surround by three sepals, which are like a kind of cup holding the petals in place. One of the distinctive features of orchids is that the middle petal, the labellum or lip, is specialized in fantastic ways."

The last picture to be taken by Bedie was of a Venus's Shoe ("Cypriepedium'); in English, it is called 'Lady's Slipper.' That had been her final look through the viewfinder, it seems. And so they go on the excursion to find this treasure and finds, instead, Alain whose parents are elderly aristocrats. He is associated with several missing persons and is either a stalker or serial murderer. He even confesses that he killed his only brother in the farm pond when they were children. Mara is saved from the same fate of her sister by Julian.

This is the first novel by Michelle Wan who, with her horticulturalist husband, makes an annual pilgrimage to this area in France to photgraph and chart wild orchids. I always said that debut novels are autobiographical. She gives beautiful descriptions of the Dordogne countryside (complete with map), culture and people. Along the way, you see medieval castles, small villages, and many pigeonniers.

Description: An elegant mystery and the opportunity to learn about wild orchids growing in France
Pros: Well done in the 320 pages available
Cons: Too short for truly satisfying development of the plot and characters

Nearly twenty years ago, Mara Dunn's twin sister Bedie disappeared while hiking in the Dordogne in Southwestern France. Everyone, including the police, seems to have forgotten about Bedie, but Mara continues to be haunted by thoughts of her twin. When Mara finds what she believes is Bedie's camera containing the film of a series of wild orchids in varying habitats, she believes that local orchid expert Julian Wood may be able to trace the route Bedie followed-the route on which she disappeared.

Julian reluctantly agrees to help her, not because he's interested in solving the mystery of Bedie's disappearance, but because one of the photographed orchids appears to be a type of Lady's Slipper that doesn't grow in the Dordogne. Julian would like to be the discoverer of that rare orchid.

Mara and Julian encounter a member of locals in their search-some interesting, some peculiar, some frightening-and Mara finds herself in danger before the hunt is over. The mystery is solved and the rare orchid is explained along the way. I enjoyed the excellent descriptions of the area, the inhabitants, and the food as much as the mystery. But everything about the book seemed scant. I kept thinking this was a longer book that had been over-cut: I wanted more.

Recommendation: Buy.

4 out of 5 stars Le Mystère Magnifique!.......2005-09-07

Beatrice "Bede" Dunn became fascinated with wild orchids when she got a summer job with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. They sent her to the Bruce Peninsula to map orchids. She spent three months there, wandering around the woodlands, doing some serious hiking and camping-out. When she returned in the fall with fifty rolls of film, she had a new avocation - wild orchid hunting. Bede became passionate about "documenting the existence of a single flower or the breeding ground of a particular species." In 1984 she and her boyfriend, Scott, went on a hiking holiday in the Dordogne region of southwestern France. When it began to rain, the couple had an argument about whether to leave their camp and seek shelter elsewhere or to stay put. Bede was adamant about remaining and so she did - alone. When Scott returned two days later the tent and their things were still at the campsite, but Bede was gone, along with her camera, backpack, Michelin guide and a book on wildflowers and orchids. No one ever saw the young woman again. After a massive search and investigation, which garnered much publicity, no evidence of foul play was discovered, no body, no crime scene.

Mara Dunn, Bede's identical twin, has never resigned herself to the loss of her sister. She moved to the Dordogne after her divorce became final and went into the interior design business, all the while maintaining contact with the police. Nothing concrete, however, was found concerning the disappearance. During an antique hunting expedition in a near-by town, Mara discovered an old Canon camera in a pile of junk. She noticed it immediately, even though the case was mildewed and worn, because it was identical to the cameras her parents had given her and her sister for their high school graduation. She was sure it was the camera her sister had traveled to France with. Inside the case the initials "B. D." were written, and inside the camera was an undeveloped roll of film. Damaged by time and dampness, but still viable, thirty-four photographs were revealed upon development, of wild orchids and a dovecote, taken in what appears to be the local landscape. Mara is convinced the photographs document her sibling's final days.

Now, almost twenty years after Bede vanished, Mara, with the photographs in hand, makes yet another effort to find her sister, or her remains. Julian Wood is an English expatriate living in Dordogne and an expert on wild orchids. He is also the author of "Wildflowers of the Dordogne/ Fleurs sauvages de la Dordogne," and the man Mara wants to assist her. She asks him to help her retrace her sister's footsteps using the photographs as a guide. Julian is skeptical about turning up anything new on the missing woman. He doesn't really want to get involved and he doesn't care much for pushy, intense women. Besides, the police have copies of the photographs and don't seem very excited by them. When Julian views the final picture though, he becomes agitated and as motivated to begin a search as Mara, but for different reasons. The photo is of a Cypripedium - Sabot de Venus in French, sometimes called Lady's Slipper in English. And since this rare wild orchid does not grow in the Dordogne, or anywhere in Europe, he has his own mystery to unravel - if he decides to become involved with Mara and her investigation.

Not only is "Deadly Slipper" a good literary mystery, it is really a fun book to read. Filled with an exotic cast of characters - from the local bogeyman and his mother, who is even scarier than her son, to the bizarre Sauvignac family, (the local nobility), to Julian Wood's fanatic orchid hunting nemesis and competitor, and the regulars down at Chez Nous, the town's cafe/bar/gourmet restaurant, plus a French police inspector and his lads, these personages all enrich the narrative. The horticulture tidbits are fascinating, and I'm no gardener. The description of food, wine, the gorgeous countryside - c'est tres magnifique! The setting IS France! There is even some romancing going on in between gruesome discoveries. You cannot go wrong, especially if you're looking for something different in sleuthing.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm afraid if I do I'll lose her forever. So I have to keep hanging on" .......2005-08-27

It all happened so long ago, back in 1984, when Mara's twin sister Bedie went missing while on a back packing trip in the Dordogne region of France. Resolved once and for all to solve the mystery of her disappearance, Mara moves to the area to set herself up as an interior designer in order to be close to her sister's last known whereabouts.

Hope at solving the mystery finally arrives in the form of a camera with Bedie's initials inscribed on the front of it, and inside, an undeveloped roll of film of local plant life that is mostly of orchids. Convinced that the photos may hold a clue to her sister's whereabouts, Mara contacts Julian Wood, a reticent, and introverted Englishman who arrived in the area years ago.

Julian, who now makes his living doing landscaping for the wealthy locals, is a renowned orchid expert and has written an acclaimed book, "Wildflowers of the Dordogne/ Fleurs sauvage de la Dordogne." When processed, the roll of film reveals thirty-four photos, constituting a record of Bedie's blossomy trek around the Dordogne with her shots of the orchids and also one pigeonnier, or stone pigeon coop.

The photos rivet Julian, not so much because they may hold clues to Bedie's disappearance, but because the last shot Bedie ever took was a close-up of a Lady's Slipper, a rare orchid that has never been known to grow in the Dordogne. Enthused by the discovery, the two amateur sleuths come to a tentative arrangement - Mara will help Julian locate the Lady's Slipper, if Julian helps Mara retrace Bedie's last movements before she disappeared.

As the couple, using Bedie's old photos as a pictorial map, tries to piece together her final journey, parts of the puzzle begin to interlock, but the full picture remains incomplete, critical pieces missing here and there.

What does the old woman, La Binette, and her horribly deformed son, Vrac know about Bedie's disappearance? They live on the Estate owned by the local and powerful de Sauvignac family, but Mara is convinced that La Binette and the Sauvignacs know more than they are willing to tell. And what of Alain Sauvignac, who has recently returned from working in Africa? He seems intent on casting Julian as a suspect in Mara's eyes.

Suddenly the countryside takes on a more forbidding aspect to Mara. Wild woods and fields, a scatter map of isolated farms and small communities, the rough clustered dwellings of the villages seem to draw in on themselves, stubbornly closing down secrets that the outsider would be hard put to dislodge.

Although Mara finds herself increasingly attracted to Julian, she wonders if there isn't something funny and even suspicious about a man who seemingly prefers the company of flora to that of women. Julian looks at the cypripedium, a remarkable flower and realizes that it's all too emblematic of his life - "doomed to clutch hopelessly at the things he wanted most, desired objects dangling just out of reach."

Meanwhile, Mara clings to something almost tangible, as if Bedie and her each had hold of a piece of string. Her end has gone slack, but she can't drop it, because she's afraid that if she does, she'll lose her sister forever. Her is world bound by work, "the reconstruction of dank water closets and primitive kitchens, and Bedie 19 years gone," but it occurs to her that viewed from this perspective; she and Julian have a lot in common after all.

Author, Michelle Wan has meticulously researched this first novel, not just the complex science of orchidology, but also the beautiful and varied landscape of southwestern France. Although the mystery plot is formulaic, the tension is effectively maintained throughout, as the quest nears its simultaneously desired and dreaded end.

Wan carries her tale off with panache and she manages to create a heady atmosphere that is stocked with colorful French characters, off-the-beaten-track villages, and clandestine motives that are forever linked to the deadly beauty of the Lady's Slipper. Mike Leonard August 05.

Book Description

This authoritative guide showcases the unmatched beauty and diversity of the native orchids of the southern Appalachian mountains. Based on Stanley Bentley's many years of nature study, it covers the 52 species—including one discovered by Bentley and named after him—found in a region encompassing western Virginia and North Carolina and eastern West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The entry for each orchid provides the plant's scientific and common names, a description of the flower (including color, shape, and size), and information on the time of flowering, range, and typical habitat, all in the context of the southern mountains. A range map accompanies each description, and Bentley's own superb photographs are an additional aid to identification.

Using straightforward language yet incorporating the most up-to-date scientific information and nomenclature, the book will be welcomed by amateur naturalists or professional botanists looking for species in the field and by those who simply enjoy photographs of beautiful wildflowers.

5 out of 5 stars As Beautiful As the Orchids.......2002-05-13

This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.

Book Description

Presenting both the botanical and horticultural aspects of Cypripedium, Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium, and Selenipedium, with particularly extensive information on hybridization, this survey of the slipper subfamily has been aptly described as "a scholarly work of love for these plants."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate slipper orchid reference.......2002-11-01

The book contains about 220 pages composed of: 17 pages on orchid anatomy, biology, and basic taxonomy overview, 18 pages on growing conditions, 35 pages on the genus Cypripedium, 56 pages on the genus Paphiopedilum, 5 pages on the genus Selenipedium, 15 pages on the genus Phragmipedium, 61 pages on hybridization and a historic review of crosses, and a 13 page bibliography. The book contains 225 color photographs (most are 3" x 4" in size). Each photograph displays an orchid in flower and each plant is identified to species or variety. Pages are large, pages measure 8 1/2" x 11" in size.

Approximately 140 species are described with great detail. Each species is listed with geographic distribution, cultural notes, plant description, flowering season and other comments. The author continues in most sections with an detailed discussion concluded with an assortment of opinions, conclusions, and predictions. It is a facinating, thought provoking, and important body of work. I loved it!

The author, Catherine Cash, makes bold assertions throughout the book. I found myself arguing with many of her opinions and conclusions. I was amazed. Not that I disagreed with some of her statements, but that her statements actually got me to put the book down, think about what she had said, and then eagerly go back to read more. Books about plant taxonomy is usually pretty dry stuff. But Ms. Cash has made reading about the slipper orchids a rare treat. It is a carefully written reference book.

Her chapter on the hybridization of orchids is alone worth the price of the book. This chapter is an outstanding read. Cash challenges many of the current philosophies about orchid science and hybridization. She is clear, crisp, and wonderfully opinionated.

It is a complete work. 2/3rds of the book contains facts, details, and photographs - a great referrence section. 1/3rd of the book contains commentary, discussion, and opinions - a provoking insight to the field of orchid science.

This is a must have book for any slipper orchid grower.

Book Description

Vietnam has a remarkable and diverse orchid flora that is still being explored and described. The slipper orchids, a small but showy part of the flora, epitomize the exuberance of Vietnam's orchids. This book provides comprehensive accounts of the history, nomenclature, and relationships of each of the 22 slipper orchid species and natural hybrids found within the country. It provides the first detailed accounts of their habitats, biology, and ecology, and highlights the imminent threat of extinction faced by many of them. This book also surveys non-orchid flora, and it will enthrall the reader with descriptions of Vietnam and its unique environment, rich flora, and endemic plants.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference.......2007-01-22

This book is worth the purchase price for the beauty of its photographs alone. What a treat--it's the loveliest orchid reference book I've seen. In situ photos of the Vietnamese slippers abound, as do detailed climate charts and habitat info. Great for the armchair gardener, but a must-have for the Paphiopedilum collector. The only way you'd get a better idea of the growing conditions and habitat of these plants would be if you traveled to Vietnam yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A superb slipper orchid reference book.......2003-07-12

The book contains about 308 pages composed of: 54 pages on Vietnam flora and habitat, 34 pages on the anatomy, ecology, and distribution of orchids, 178 pages about individual slipper orchid species found in Vietnam (22 species), 20 pages on the conservation, 9 pages on literature referenced, and a 14 page index.

The text is far more extensive than just "slipper orchids" or "Vietnam". Rather it also introduces the flora, habitat, and physical geography of Vietnam, and it covers all slipper orchids of southeast Asia in very complete detail.

The last 2/3rds of the book is a treasure of information about the individual species of Vietnam slippers. It contains lots of field pictures, closeups of the flowers, flower diagrams, and distribution maps. I was impressed with the completeness of the treatment for each orchid. This is a superb slipper orchid reference book.

If you are a Paphiopedilum orchid book enthusiast - times are very good. There are presently three absolutely outstanding slipper orchid books in press: "The Genus Paphiopedilum" by Braem, Baker & Baker, "The Slipper Orchids" by Catherine Cash, and "Slipper Orchids of Vietnam" by Leonid Averyanov, Phillip Cribb, Phan Ke Loc & Nguyen Tien Hiep. Each book sets the highest standard of excellence. We slipper orchid hobbyists are truly blessed to have such talented and passionate writers on this subject. I reference each of these books several times each month. They are great additions to my orchid library.

There is total concensus over 2/3rds of the species in all of the books. But there are major disagreements over much of the rest. Discussions in the text are filled with little daggers about what the other book authors had missed or misinterpreted - it is facinating! Since Slipper Orchids of Vietnam was written after the other two books, Averyanov & Cribb have the last word in the arguement. But I suspect that new books from Braem and Cash are already in the making.

It's a great time to be a slipper orchid enthusiast. You gotta buy this book!

I was involved from the begining of this book and it took up a lot of my time to help Keith sort out some of the misconceptions with regard to some of the species. As I had been involved in the growing of PAPHIOPEDILUMS for a considerable time, and in breeding them I hope that I helped to bring this book to its final form. The trouble that was taken to obtian good photographs of all the specie was a long and dificult job as I can afirm. As recently I have had to give up orchid growing due to various reasons, I still look in this book to keep reminding me what great pleasure that I have had gorwing them in the past. We used to visit each others collections from time to time and exchange plants and ideas, and generally talk about what the future will bring. I can only recomend that anyone growing specie PAPHIOPEDILUMS this book is a must. Regards John L Marks

            Book Description

Dr. George Weinberg has been a therapist for over twenty-five years. In that time, he has worked with a great range of men, and he has discovered that deep down, men actually want commitment, love, and permanence every bit as much as women do. Over the years, his patients -- even those who have had a string of failed relationships -- have expressed deep desires for permanent, monogamous mariages.

So why do they behave as if they don't?

And what can a woman who wants a relationship do to help her man commit?

While other therapists tend to be students of women, Dr. Weinberg is a student of men. From childhood, most men have been taught to be strong and silent, never to show weakness. They've been discouraged from talking about their feelings, so they never learned the skill. Now, most are on a quest for the ready-made perfect woman. They feel that, in relationships, things can't be worked out. When the slightest thing goes wrong, it seems easier to bolt than to talk.

In engaging prose filled with anecdotes we all can relate to, Dr.Weinberg unveils the psyche of men to show the real insecurities that lurk there. Other books like The Rules and Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus have played right into men's fears -- by accepting the old myth and telling women that their job is to "overcome" men's fear of commitment. As Dr.Weinberg explains, this is exactly the wrong thing to do. Men have a powerful radar that tells them to run away when any strategy is being used on them. He explains why games of any kind -- playing hard to get, making a man jealous -- will only push a man further from commitment. And he gives women four simple keys to understanding their man's real needs and helping them move toward relationships.

It is easy to scare a man, but it is also easy to capture his love without playing games. Why Men Won't Commit shows women how to enter places where her man has not allowed any other woman to go and, if it's right, to stay there in a loving, committed relationship.

3 out of 5 stars More helpful than most...........2007-02-22

I found the first half of the book very very helpful. Most relationship books aren't written by a man on a man's perspective on relationships for women (at least not in this way). I found it very interesting understanding how men view their relationships with women, though the men that Dr. Weinberg works with or uses as examples in his book seem to be confused about male identity and masculinity. I don't think the theories in this book apply to all men. I don't think men in general rely on gut instincts and are unable to articulate their emotions about why they can't commit (I know many that can).

I was disappointed because I bought this book based on the 5 star reviews. Unfortunately, I found the book a little too value based and not objective enough for me. I think every woman should find Dr. Weinberg's four theories about men's basic needs in a relationship very useful (I did), but the chapters after this made me put the book down. I hope there aren't any women that by into the chapter about sex (as soon as possible) and how it affects committment, intimacy or whatever (there are so many opinions about sex, which mostly depends on a person's values, morals, and religion and I found the chapter too biased and flawed.)

I appreciate the review from the man that wrote "don't buy into it ladies . . ." (re: the book in general). Read his review before you buy this book; I didn't.

            5 out of 5 stars so helpful.......2006-01-29

This book is well-written, in an easy to understand manner, and is so incredibly insightful and helpful I can hardly believe it. It identifies exact problems I have been having with my boyfriend but never knew what was actually wrong. It also has fabulous suggestions for help. This is a great book.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Believe it Ladies! From a real man.......2005-08-09

Men don't commit for several reasons, little of which is stated by the good Doctor.

            1. Yes, men are afraid to commit because there is much to lose and little to gain in this "feel good" society for a man to get married. Many women only commit to relationships today if THEY are the able to reap the benefits whether emotional, financial, security etc. from the relationship while for men it is a lifelong journey.

Fact: Many more women leave men and divorce them than men leave the woman for the very same reasons as stated above. Contrary to the Hollwood myth, most divorce is filed by the woman, near 70%.

            2. It is this very self centered attitude that makes many men wonder "Does she really love me for me" and "Why would I make a commitment because if we divorce I lose everything". So, ladies the Doctor is right about some things but wrong in many others. If you really love your man, tell him and show him. Be honest with him, don't play games and if you don't love him for him, with all his faults.

            Then you don't love him.

            5 out of 5 stars Makes Sense.......2004-06-04

This book makes sense. It tells you the 4 reasons a man will commit that women often aren't aware of. Also, it discusses how to argue, although the book, "The Seven Principles of Making Marriage Work: A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert" covers is best! However, this book is good at explaining why men don't/do commit, based off his research. Written for the woman's perspective. Much better than "The Rules"! Gave me confidence by realizing men also want commitment.

5 out of 5 stars strong relationship guide.......2003-04-08

After a quarter of a century working closely with men, Dr. George Weinberg concludes that the male of the species desires permanent commitment and a forever love equal to that, which women want too. The difference is men believe that to admit they want a permanent partner is not considered part of the cultural image and thus too feminine so most males hide their inner feelings as an alpha menace to their masculinity. Dr. Weinberg believes culture forces this role to include women placing the man of their dreams in a situation by comparing his strengths and weaknesses to his rivals.

WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT: GETTING WHAT YOU BOTH WANT WITHOUT PLAYING GAMES provides a straight forward guide for frustrated women to enable their mate to find his feelings ("gut reactions") by altering her behavior. Before feminists scream "no Jane" chauvinism and machos play Tarzan, the key in Dr. Weinberg's help guide is to accept that the male is the "weaker sex" so that the stronger female must take charge by being the relationship caretaker reaching through the stereotype stud to his inner being. This is an easy to follow guide that wastes little if any space assisting frustrated women with solid advice.
