Classic Appeal.......2006-08-20
This book is a great point of reference for anyone looking for formal garden inspiration. It is wonderful to see the way architecture and garden design can really complement one another so harmoniously. In these cases, neither would be nearly as interesting without the other.
G. Jekyll's garden plans are very interesting to look at. They are giving me many thoughts on good plant combinations & spacing. Also, while her designs are filled with a lot of material, she seems to have a keen eye for leaving space as well.
The attention to detail is wonderful and one can really see the benefit of meticulous planning. Rather than the plant and see what happens approach, it is actually possible to make very deliberate & specific choices.
Now I just want to know who the poor people are who have to do the weeding, watering and pruning in these giant gardens - eeeks!
A Must Have For The Complete Garden Library.......2005-08-09
Gertrude Jekyll's expertise is evident in this finely written and illustrated book. It covers the Arts and Crafts era of fine gardening in extensive detail. She illustrates the garden relationship to the residence and outbuildings and what plants to use to create different effects.
Informative and useful...beautiful update of the classic.... .......2005-06-30
First published in 1912 by `Country Life' as GARDENS FOR SMALL COUNTRY HOUSES, ARTS AND CRAFTS GARDENS by Gertrude Jekyll and Lawrence Weaver was republished years later as part of the Antique Collectors Club LTD, and now as a "revised edition with additional colo[u]r illustrations" by the Garden Art Press. More art book than instructive garden guide, the modern publication includes many black and white illustrations as well as layout drawings of the houses and grounds discussed, as well as detailed examples of other features, appearing in the earlier volume, along with beautiful color photos and illustrations depicting specific design elements as they appear today. Thus the reader can determine what the landscaper saw and planned, and how well her design worked then and years later. Jekyll's foresight and intuitive understanding of the "art" of garden design (which many of us learn about the hard way) as illustrated in this book, provides the modern reader with an idea of why Jekyll is still revered among garden designers.
The book title, `Gardens for Small County Houses', may appear ludicrous to the contemporary reader, as it provides an overview of selected examples of various gardens the authors developed in Surrey, Berkshire, and Guildford, which by today's standards are quite large. Chapters cover houses and gardens in their entirety, and at least one covers the "Treatment of Small Sites" such as Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, a gorgeous town house site. Other chapters cover selected design elements, such as "balustrades and walls", "steps and stairways" and retaining walls. Most of these elements are used by modern landscape designers in large public settings and on a few "estates", but many cannot be adapted to the small scale urban garden. Many features of these "country" gardens were lifted from Roman villas and most of us don't own villas, however, some of the elements, such as pergolas, arbors, and trellises can and probably should be adapted to a modern urban garden.
Because you probably wouldn't want to attempt to duplicate these designs on an average modern lot, the value of this book other than as a beautiful art book lies in its ability to inform. You will want to study it before you visit one of the notable "estates" where Jekyll worked in England.

Gertrude Jekyll's Colour Schemes.......2002-07-31
As an Engish Gardener "displaced in Kansas" this book was a delight. Anyone who wants to plan a garden large or small should turn to this little gem written over 80 years ago. Miss Jekyll was the definitive garden planner, her ideas of colours and seasonal planting will inspire you to create a beautiful garden of your own. Quite the best of her kind.

Excellent summary of Jekyll's work on gardens.......1997-08-15
This book has become my bedtime reading material. It offers an excellent summary of Jekyll's views on color, plant selection, the layout of beds and the philosophy of the garden. While I would have liked detailed drawings or layouts of the various gardens discussed, her written descriptions feed the imagination. I've already laid out a new garden border as a result of the insights gained, and I am inspired to read other works by Jekyll and others

Customer Reviews:
A Woman of the Garden of Lasting Wisdom.......2005-04-26
Perhaps it is due in part to that time of year when most of us turn to the exhilarating pleasures of watching Spring waken the dormant lawns and flowerbeds, the pots and trees that have survived the coffin of winter. Or perhaps it is the nostalgia of noting a friendly blossom from a wastrel seed from last summer's plant. Or perhaps it is that special time of day when, garden tended, we relax after our labors and read of the history of the smells and sights we've unblanketed. Whatever the reason, returning to the timeless writings of Gertrude Jekyll and the inimitable manner in which she shared her passion and love for her garden is renewing and rewarding.
In this beautiful book compiled by Cherry Lewis are photographs and numerous paintings that provided the atmosphere of an illuminated manuscript to the wise, warm, thoughtful and enormously timeless instruction for the gardener. Her writings are composed like conversations about old friends, and on reading we just happen to feel like one of them. Jekyll lived from 1843 to 1932 and never stopped discussing the care and management of the gardens she grew and those she designed. And her advice is superior to the many wordy, current 'how to' books on gardening because that advice comes not only from a botanist but also a naturalist.
This lavishly illustrated book contains some lovely old painting reproductions in super color and on quality paper. Appearing like a Valentine yet containing solid sage advice on horticulture, this book is a treasure house of information and reveries. And perhaps that is why it surfaces so comfortably during Spring to linger on the coffee table year round. A Gift. Grady Harp, April 05

Customer Reviews:
Restoring an historic garden.......2003-06-05
Imagine buying a delapidated old manor house old manor house with a large overgrown garden for a very reasonable price and finding that not only was the house historically important but the garden, invisible under weed growth, had been designed by one of the most famous of English garden designers. Itýs hard to imagine who was most fortunate - the purchasers who lucked into this masterpiece but who paid for it many times over in the toil and expense of careful restoration, or the nation who almost lost a yet another treasure to developers.
The Wallingers, looking for a house that was fairly close to London, but within their price range, took a chance on a most unprepossessing house. This book tells the story of the restoration of the garden to the exact specifications of Gertrude Jekyll. It must have been a daunting task. The plans themselves, once they were unearthed, were difficult to read. To be honest, they look like a bunch of scribbles and scrawls and to have deciphered them at all is a remarkable achievement.
This book covers the first fifteen years of the gardenýs re-birth. It is a detailed account, taken from Rosamund Wallingerýs diary, but it is written with wit and style and her frustrations and triumphs are felt rather than read. And all along you can follow the illustrations of how the garden progressed from months of ripping up and burning to the glorious borders, wild garden and rose garden of the present.
But this is a value-for-money book with the story of one familyýs life work , not just a collection of pretty garden pictures. Not many people restore gardens, we usually start off from scratch. So this is a whole new viewpoint, and there is much that we gardeners can learn from it.
A beautiful and inspiring book.......2000-08-28
In 1983, Rosamund Wallinger (the author) and her husband purchased a turn-of-the-century manor house in Hampshire called Upton Grey, a large estate that needed many repairs and a derelict garden that was overgrown with weeds. While researching the history of the house, Wallinger learned that the garden was designed by the great garden designer Gertrude Jekyll. She had no interest in gardening before she moved to Upton Grey, but she did recognize Gertrude Jekyll's stature in gardening history, and so she set out to restore the garden to its original splendor, a task that would take more than a decade. She located Jekyll's original plans at the University of California and began a difficult process of translating the plans from Jekyll's bad handwriting and attempting to locate the plants that were originally used in the garden. Fortunately for us and herself, Wallinger kept a journal in which she documented her progress. The before and after photographs are amazing and the reader becomes quickly engrossed in Wallinger's project as well as a growing attachment to her menagerie of dogs, ducks and geese. This beautiful book will be an inspriation to any gardener, especially those have a formidable gardening challenge ahead of them.
Gertrude Jekyll's Lost Garden: An Adventure in Restoration.......2000-08-25
During research for restoration of a derelict Arts and Crafts home, which had been designed by the famous English architect, Edwin Lutyens, to fit around the shell of an Elizabethan farmhouse, the new owners discovered that the original garden had been designed in 1908 by the legendary Gertrude Jekyll.
Rosamond Wallinger began research on the garden, discovered Jekyll's plans in the University of California's Bancroft Library, and `with the ignorance and enthusiasm of a true amateur', decided to restore the garden to its exact original glory
This story is a fascinating account of the labors, heartaches, and joys which accompanied the sixteen year project. It took her and her husband two years to remove the brambles and weeds which covered the two acres of original garden. The detective work required for the location of exact plants specified in the plans involved a global search and brought her many connections throughout England and Europe, gardeners who shared her enthusiasm for the project and provided information, seeds, and cuttings.
Wallinger, whose previous gardening experience was nearly non-existent, freely confesses the mistakes and mishaps which occurred during the project. Her meticulous records and beautiful photographs show the emergence of the now complete garden, the only fully restored Jekyll garden still in existence. Readers will enjoy the unfolding story, told with self-deprecating humor, which also contains practical advice and insight into the Jekyll's ,methods.
An eminently readable book of interest to garden historians, garden enthusiasts, and arm chair gardeners as well.
(The garden is now, in season, open to the public on a regular schedule, and visitors today can enjoy the paradise garden envisioned by Gertrude Jekyll nearly a century ago.)

Customer Reviews:
Who are they kidding?.......2007-06-01
This book is completely full of 'case studies', yet the biggest flaw is that they wrote it with such political correctness as to alienate the very person who is buying the book, mainly, the women! Almost every story is about some woman being the 'jerk' and some poor helpless guy getting taken advantage of! Give me a brake!
mixed bag.......2007-03-09
Most of the comments made are based on large assumptions about the dynamics of the relationships. I don't think it takes into account when you have an ex who isn't willing to work anything out. For such a circumstance I don't think this book really helps at all except understand your own feelings. I think I have a pretty good handle on my feelings and don't need any book to tell me how I feel or to help analyze myself for that matter. This book might help in trying to figure the ex out but in my opinion I think those are assumptions and opions as well and not neccessarily fact. If the author put in advice about legal options it might prove to be more useful.
A divorce recovery must have!.......2007-01-09
This book really helped to comfort me and to put things into perspective. I could hardly put this book down.I highly recommend it if you are in any stage of divorce. I wish I would have read it before my attorneys used my emotionally difficult divorce to suck thousands of wasted dollars out of me.
How To Inflame The Situation. Should be the title of this book........2006-09-07
One parenting acting like a jerk is bad enough. Advising the other parent to act like a jerk is not going to help the children.
Be as kind to yourself, your children and your X as you can. Don't behave like a jerk or make things harder for any reason.
Not recommended.
Everyone should read this book........2006-08-30
I personally think everyone regardless of their status should read this book. It's a great communication tool. Very quick read; simple; easy to read and understand. Personally I've found it to be a great help in dealing with many different situations, especially in times of conflict, that have almost impossible or non-existant positive communication.
This book makes it simple and easy to understand just how powerful taking responsibility for ones own issues and communication can be. It gives the reader a clear and concise way to gain control over themselves and their communication and hand back to the other party that which does not belong to the reader. I've bought this book for many of my friends and they have all felt like it was a valuable read not only when dealing with an ex-spouse, but also in many other situations where one finds ones self dealing with conflict.
My one regret with this book is that the title is such a poor choice for such a wonderful tool!
