This gardening classic was first published in 1975, and now a second generation of gardeners who prefer pest-resistant planning to chemicals will find a place for it on the shelves. Not only does it tell what to plant with what, but also how to use herbal sprays to control insects, what wild plants to encourage in the garden, how to grow fruit and nut trees, how to start small plots or window-box gardens, and much more. It's one of the most practical books around for any gardener of edibles, no matter how serious or casual.

Book Description

This classic has now taught generations of gardeners how to use the natural benefits of plants to protect and support each other. Here is a reader's complete reference to which plants nourish the soil, which keep away bugs and pests, and which plants just don't get along. Here is a complete guide to using companion planting to grow a better garden. 555,000 copies in print.

Great book. Very informative. I highly recommend anyone who likes to garden, or even those who just want to landscape their yards.

5 out of 5 stars Katy loves "Carrots love Tomatoes ".......2007-06-14

Really A good Guide... I work hard in my garden.. so I want the best results
this book helps me to do this!

2 out of 5 stars Notthing special.......2007-06-09

I was disappointed that this book offered no scientific evidence for companion planting, and offered little more information than you could easily find for free on the internet. I read this book, took a few notes and then sold it immediately. Not one for the shelf.

3 out of 5 stars useful reference book.......2007-05-23

I was hoping for a book that would be an interesting read. This one is more like reference book. It is comprehensive, but kind of like reading a dictionary. I would recommend it because it has useful knowledge, but if you want a gardening book that you can read and relax with, this one probably won't do it.

4 out of 5 stars ... and veggie gardeners just love companion planting!.......2007-05-23

True, there are many edible plants and herbs that Louise Riotte does not mention in her wonderful 'Carrots love tomatoes', and true again, her hot and humid part of the world is not the same as the cool, flat countryside
of Holland's extreme North (where I live). So, she doesn't write about witlof (white chicory roots) or our wonderful brands of kale, but what she DOES write about it absolutely amazing. In my view companion planting is one of the basic principles - and such a sympathetic one! - to create a healthy garden. And what better haven, to enjoy everyday, by yourself and with others? Good on you, Louise!

5 out of 5 stars Concise, but useful.......2007-06-09

This is a relatively small book at about 150 pages, but it manages to pack in a lot of information very concisely. It's beautifully illustrated with color photographs and drawings.

The first 2/3 of the book includes general herb gardening background and use of herbs tips: how to choose plants, pick the location, general design principles, planting instructions (including some nice tips on extending the growing season), propagation, harvesting, drying, pests and diseases, etc.

It also includes suggestions for common culinary uses, such as salads, herbal vinegars, flavored oils, teas, jellies, honeys, and breads. These are not an extensive set of recipes, but more like master recipes with some suggestions for how you can mix them up with variations.

The book also includes suggestions and recipes for health and beauty products (again, not an extensive collection). This section includes potpourri, sachets, bouquets, dried arrangements and insect repellents.

The last 1/3 of the book has individual pages on about 50 different herbs. These individual pages tell you a description, how to grow, harvesting instructions, suggested uses, tips, cultivars, and also includes a quick key on the level of care required (using a 4 glove rating system), if it attracts beneficial insects, whether or not it is ornamental, whether or not it can be grown in a container, how much yield you can expect to get and how easy it is to grow.

The back of the book contains a few pages of resources for laboratories, vendors, herb associations and other books or literary resources.

There are lots of charts and sidebars and overall I found this book to be very useful and easy to access. It doesn't have the level of information needed to make this anything other than a quick reference book though.

5 out of 5 stars in love with herbs.......2007-01-25

I adore this book! Wow! It has all the things I wanted!
    - it's organic
    - it very thorougly covers many herbs in different formats, so you know everything from what bugs they attract or repel, how tall they grow, and what zone they can be grown in
    - common uses for them: I discovered many herbs I thought were inedible plants that are indeed herbs
    - easy to use tables

I wasn't too hip on all the cosmetic and craft uses - I'd rather eat them, but they're short and may come in handy. I know the rest of the book sure will!

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK.......2006-08-23

This is a great book for a beginning herb gardener. The first half of the book is a general overview of gardening techniques, designs, and uses for herbs. The second half gives specific information on growing and using many herbs. This has been extraordinarily helpful to me as background and reference for me.

However, it is pretty basic and only covers the most commonly used herbs, so I'm not sure that advanced herb gardeners would get much out of this.

5 out of 5 stars "Must Have" for aspiring herb growers.......2006-07-24

Great resource book. Covers all of the basics in clear, simple instructions.

5 out of 5 stars A complete herbal reference book!.......2006-06-26

I really like this book. It is very easy to follow and has a little bit of everything you need to know packed into the book. I bought it for the outside herb garden design, but I changed my mind. I am trying a kitchen garden, growing the herbs inside in containers. If you are new to herb gardening, this is the perfect book. And in my opinion, it is the only book you will need. I want to use the fragrant herbs for sachet crafts and dry some herbs for cooking. These will be terrific gifts for my DIL because she buys and uses a lot of herbs for cooking and will never have the time to grown them. You will never put this book away. There are so many possibilities of what to do with herbs.

5 out of 5 stars Companion veggie gardening.......2007-01-10

I originally bought this book over 20 years ago from Rodale press and lost it in one of my many moves. It is an excellent resource for companion and inter-planting of flowers, many of which are edible, with vegetables. I now garden in containers and the concepts in this book lend themselves easily to this kind of gardening.

3 out of 5 stars More about "Other Secrets" than "Companion Planting".......2001-10-19

I was a bit disappointed in this book. There were some references as to what plants complement each other, and what ones are used to repel certain insects, but those references were too few and buried deep within certain textual descriptions of various plants. Many, if not most, plant references did not even have companion planting information. Then there were the chapters referring to cosmetics, fragrances, and skin care that better belonged in a health and beauty aid book. I will be looking for a different book to supply my needs on companion planting--but this time will preview the book at a bookstore or library so I know what I am getting.

5 out of 5 stars Companion planting at its finest.......2000-05-25

Roses Love Garlic is a great book for novice and experienced gardeners alike. For the beginning gardener, chapter 19 offers many sample garden plans for both small and large plots. The more experienced gardeners might enjoy chapters 12 and 13 which provide projects involve dried flowers and the use of natural dyes. My personal favorite is chapter 7, "Companion planting with flowers and herbs." This book is a must own for anyone interested in chemical free gardening.

        Book Description

In association with Jackson & Perkins, Rose Companions is the first book devoted expressly to the exciting variety of plants that can be grown with roses in the garden. No longer must roses be considered appropriate only for the rose garden. Instead, today's roses offer an impressive array of characteristics that make them ideal plants for many landscape uses, including form, color, and fragrance. And the number of plants that make perfect partners for roses is astounding, including:

Rose Companions will give gardeners of all levels the information they need to create a beautiful landscape, whether they already have an established garden and want to add roses and other plants to it, or if they are growing roses and want to enhance them with companion plants, or if they are starting from scratch and have always dreamed of a garden lush with flowers-including roses.

        5 out of 5 stars A Must for the Rose Gardener's Library.......2005-12-09

The author's rose experience gives the knowledgeable rosarian broader understanding and the novice rich new territory to discover. Roses become assets for gardens rather than specimens separated from the whole. If I had this book when I first began my rose adventures it would have been a constant source of help and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars good guide to integrating roses.......2005-07-01

This is an excellent guide to integrating roses into a garden with other plants instead of keeping them in a separate location in a bare, mulched rose bed. Well written text and good pictures.

Shame on the publisher, though, for such poor copyediting! Next time pay a good copyeditor or proofreader and spare yourself the embarrassment of roses "baring their hips" (bearing, perhaps?) and "while your nose is ravaging the blooms" (really? RAVAGING?) and miscellaneous omitted words.

            Book Description

Courageous Souls explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, prior to birth for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. Because very different life challenges are often planned for similar reasons, readers who have not faced these specific challenges will nevertheless see themselves - and their motivations as a soul - in these stories. As readers come to realize that they themselves planned their lives, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.

            This book is FANTASTIC!
Everyone has a story and has things going on in their life. This book makes everything that happens to you make sense. It allows you to understand why you have ended up where you are in life. Why you have chosen certain paths. And allows you to understand and be at peace with other peoples choices and the way they live their life.
I just loved it.Everyone should have a copy.It is well written, easy to understand and informative. But above all..it just makes sense. And things seem alot more clear to me than they did before I read the book.I loved it.For anyone who needs alittle hope or clarity in their lives..read this book.

            3 out of 5 stars Slow read.......2007-10-12

This book has some interesting ideas but it is a slow read. Not too sure if I would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Karma is more than payback.......2007-10-11

This book really changed my perspective on my current life situation. I was quite negative about the situation I'm dealing with, feeling it was just the result of past lives in which I had incurred very bad karma and I would just have to live through it. But, after reading this book, I believe I am living this life because of contracts I made in the pre-birth planning. That changes everything for me - if I agreed to the challenges I'm working with because I wanted to help one I love, there can be no resentment, just gratitude for being able to help, and love for the one I'm struggling with. Thank you, Robert Schwartz, what a gift!

            5 out of 5 stars So that's why . . ........2007-10-08

If you ever want to get into the backside of your pre-birth planning of your life challenges, read Courageous Souls by Robert Schwartz. Want to know why you attract illness, accidents, birth defects? Want to know why you chose a life of alcoholism or drug addiction, or are around someone who has? Read this book. The stories, while may start out slow at first, are powerful and insightful. Just stick with them. Robert uses mediums who are able to access multiple guides at one time, and your primary guide and listen in on conversations between you and your soul group.

            2 out of 5 stars not credible.......2007-09-30

I got to p. 300 and started reading another book. I found this book painstakingly slow to read, the information provided by the mediums: farfetched, and the conclusions drawn by the author, hard to swallow. Often, when mediums are tired, their accuracy rate diminishes. I never heard of any of the mediums used in this book. Robert Schwartz makes everything so complicated when the subject matter is really quite easy to understand. The book just doesn't flow easily and it's not a page turner in my opinion. I'm a believer, but this book really is a waste of time and money. Read Journey of the Soul by Michael Newton, PhD. Instead of using mediums, he enters the superconsciousness of his clients and elicits information from them directly about their experiences on The Other Side.

            Book Description

Humanity, argues Michel Odent, stands at a crossroads in the history of childbirth - and the direction we choose to take will have critical consequences. Until recently a woman could not have had a baby without releasing a complex cocktail of "love hormones." In many societies today, most women give birth without relying on the release of such a flow of hormones. Some give birth via caesarean section, while others use drugs that not only block the release of these natural substances, but also do not have their beneficial behavioral effects. "This unprecedented situation must be considered in terms of civilization," says Odent. It gives us urgent new reasons to rediscover the basic needs of women in labor.

At a time when pleas for the "humanization" of childbirth are fashionable, the author suggests, rather, that we should first accept our `mammalian' condition and give priority to the woman's need for privacy and to feel secure. The activity of the intellect, the use of language, and many cultural beliefs and rituals—which are all special to humans—are handicaps in the period surrounding birth. Says Odent: "To give birth to her baby, the mother needs privacy. She needs to feel unobserved. The newborn baby needs the skin of the mother, the smell of the mother, her breast. These are all needs that we hold in common with the other mammals, but which humans have learned to neglect, to ignore or even deny."

Expectant parents, midwives, childbirth educators, those involved in public health, and all those interested in the future of humanity will find this a provocative and visionary book.

5 out of 5 stars Every American Obstetrician Should Read This Book.......2007-08-10

As an L&D nurse, I have witnessed my fair share of medically managed labors and surgically assisted births. I also deal with the mangled mothers and stunned newborns left behind as the OB hurries off to their next "job." American/western hospital labor and birth is so far from normal it's shocking. How refreshing to read this book and learn how women's needs in birth can be met and safety and health can be a priority as well. Dr Odent describes the needs of women and how to meet them during pregnancy and birth delightfully. It is a fascinating and informative read.

            Book Description

Bestselling author Sheila Kitzinger, the world's foremost birth educator and activist, explores the universal experience of pregnancy and childbirth in this splendid new book, beautifully illustrated with hundreds of photographs.

With an intimate, informative style that both enlightens and engages her readers, Kitzinger looks closely at feeling and emotions in pregnancy, the physical and spiritual experience of giving birth, and the bonds that are traditionally formed between mothers and midwives. She chronicles ideas and mythologies about birth, as well as pregnancy traditions, from a magnificent array of cultures past and present -- and, with breathtaking perception and insight, explores how can we learn from them. And she focuses on the need today for vital and human connections in the birthing process, when medical procedures can overshadow the fundamental humanity of giving birth.

In Rediscovering Birth, Sheila Kitzinger enables women and their partners to make informed choices about how they want to live through their own unique experiences of birth and parenthood.

5 out of 5 stars The bigger picture.......2004-11-27

Sheila Kitzinger puts the 21st century American childbirth experience in its proper context. Reading this book breathed fresh air into my pregnancy.

Parts of this book are interesting in a "huh. i don't know that" kind of way. Others are real paradigm shifters. For example, before I read this book, one of the only reasons I could think of for not having an ultrasound was the expense. Kitzinger talked about how ultrasounds and other prenatal testing have changed the culture of chldbirth around the world (creating an atmosphere of pressure to abort girls where male children are preferred, one example). What was more directly relevant to me personally was how, in America, prenatal testing is changing the mother-child relationship from one that is exclusive to one where the mother ignores her child's direct communication in favor of allowing her child to speak to her only through 3rd parties, such as a doctor or technician. In this manner, the "authorities" can wrest even more control over women, because you "need" them to perform the tests in order to have a relationship with your own child.

The book would be worth it even without the text. The photography is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful and empowering celebration of birth.......2004-08-24

Sheila Kitzinger's book "Rediscovering Birth" is a gorgeous, lavishly illustrated book that will make you feel confident in your body's ability to weather the challenges of birth. Topics discussed include the journey to birth, birthing rituals, mythologies of birth, and the importance of informed choice today. I wish I could give this book more than five stars. It is awesome!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Supplement to Your Pregnancy Reading.......2003-08-05

Definitely not a substitute for a good pregnancy reference book, but a beautiful addition to your reading list while you wait and prepare.

I love Kitzinger's use of photographs, art, and ancient and historical texts in describing the social aspects of birth and mothering. She has done extensive research into the birth rituals and practices of many cultures. While she is critical of the overuse of interventions in American births, she openly acknowledges that they can be a wonderful blessing in saving the lives of mothers and babies in emergency situations.

When I first got this book, I just paged through and looked at all the pictures and quotes. They way the book is printed (double-spaced on wide, glossy pages) makes it a little difficult to read, for me anyway. After a few days, I started reading it from the beginning and am enjoying it so much I'll forgive the printing style.

A great book for mothers who are relishing this profound, defining time in their lives. It will inspire you to read more on natural childbirth (if you haven't already) as you begin to realize the power within you to give birth.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful read for an expectant mother.......2002-01-11

It's clearly not a guide-to-pregancy book, but I have found it to be a wonderful companion to the other pregnancy books I am reading. This book, with beautiful pictures and photos of ancient artifacts, surveys birthing myths and pregnancy traditions worldwide, comparing how this common, yet miraculous, human experience is appreciated and interpreted.
The author takes a harsh view at our highly medicalized, Caesarian-obsessed state of obstetric medicine, but I believe, she is right in that regard. Obstetrics has stripped women of some of the magic and the love that countless generations of women have experienced as they give birth.
I think that not every reader will appreciate or accept some of this, but it is perfect for me. I am a woman of color, with a deep fascination and appreciation of other cultures and ancient cultures and of the goddess religions and reading this book has affirmed much of what I already believe.
If you are a woman searching for a more spiritual, more universal meaning to your pregnancy, I would highly recommend this book.

            4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Coffee-Table Type Book.......2001-10-27

If you're looking for a book on childbirth preparation, this is not it. If you're looking for a book that celebrates women, birth, and the mysteries of both, then you've found one! The detail is wonderful, the writing is lush, and the pictures are simply amazing. This is such a beautiful book with a beautiful message about women, our wonderful bodies, and our wonderful babies.
