A domestic dervish whose Summer Notebook and Fall Notebook skillfully blended seasonal advice on gardening, entertaining, and crafting, Carolyne Roehm now turns her thoughts to winter in this, the third installment in the series. Believing that "winter is the most encouraging season for the gardener ... the only time of the year when the creative juices of the plantsman are given free reign," Roehm offers expert information on a wide variety of horticultural activities suitable for the season, including forcing bulbs and branches, growing and arranging hardy hellebores, and creating a winter-garden checklist.
Not to be outdone are the holidays, namely Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's Day, which Roehm illustrates down to the finest detail. From delectable meals and to-die-for decorations to vibrant floral arrangements and millennial good-luck gifts, everything one needs to plan and execute the finest of gatherings is covered, complete with clear recipes and instructions. Full-color photographs accompany Roehm's musings, along with pockets for storing ideas and "additional notes/inspirations/remember next year" lists for recording personal thoughts, making the Winter Notebook ideal for organizing one of the busiest seasons of the year. --Stefanie Hargreaves

Good purchase.......2006-02-24
Exactly the book I was looking for - great photos, good hints, clear explanations. A pleasure for the eyes!
Nice, but nothing to get hugely excited about........2001-11-02
Roehm makes pretty things and to do that she relies upon items such as hellebores (a winter-blooming flower) which are quite hard for the average person to find. If her projects were less work or so dazzling that you didn't mind running all over East Overcoat to find the necessary components, then I'd be more enthusiastic about this book. As it stands, it's kind of a pricey picture book. I'd recommend Tracy Porter or Martha Stewart for a more hands-on experience.
VIVE LA DIFFERENCE!.......2000-05-01
WHAT A TERRIFIC BOOK! This is"la creme de la creme" and i find it very difficult when other reviewers compare her product with Martha Stewart's line!It is as if we compare Opera with Andrea Bocelli, this collection of notebooks are so refined and so classic at the same time that i rediscover them each time i need them. The winter notebook gives wonderful ideas of presents for the guests and the flower arrangments are one of a kind. The level of artistry is demonstrated in each pages and places Carolyne Roehm as one of the most elegant designer of all. I also appreciate the fact that Carolyne Roehm understands the need of elegance in the day-to-day life and that it doesn't have to be expensive. I'm a young Opera singer and in my field you receive a lot of flowers and with this book i was able to create wonderful bouquets and appreciate another form of art. I admire her flair and her sense of style, for me Carolyne Roehm is not only a designer but a real artist who search for the very best in every detail.
Perfect for a creative person.......2000-03-03
I found this third book in the series as inspirational as the others. I don't need step-by-step instruction to develop something beautiful. A little inspiration goes a long way with a naturally creative audience. For those who have time to glue flowers on boxes, I leave you Martha. From a busy professional's point of view, I'll take the Roehm way, any day.
Not bad, but lacks content.......2000-02-26
This was the first of Ms. Roehm's seasonal notebooks that I purchased. I have since bought the other two, and am anticipating the Spring notebook due out soon. While the photos are exquisite, I feel that the book lacks content. I couldn't help wishing there was more of everything in this book - more pictures, recipes, etc. I enjoy a good "picture book" and that's most likely the reason I'm awaiting the last book to the series. I couldn't help comparing her to Martha Stewart, and I'd gladly welcome a new face in that field, but it just doesn't come close to Martha's myriad of ideas. The bottom line is: if you like to look at pretty pictures and get some inspiration for decorating your own home, then you'd probably like this book.

Beautiful Designs!.......2007-09-06
This book is just full of gorgeous decorative monograms and floral motifs. Highly recommended for anyone looking for inspiration in the lost art of embroidered monograms such as what you'd find on beautiful linens and items found in antique shops and flea markets.
Treasury of Floral Designs and Initials for Artists and Craftspeople.......2007-04-05
I was excited when I discovered this book and I knew I had to have this for my library. I am a calligrapher and I am always looking for designs that will enhance my work. I was not at all disappointed when my package arrived! The work is very detailed and the book has plenty to offer. not to mention the embellishments are just to die for!!! The script/lettering is fantastic and it was well worth the investment. I know this book will never be found on the shelf or coffee table because it will be well used and always on my work table. Just sign me as "ONE HAPPY CALLIGRAPHER"!!!
Inspiration for Embroidery.......2006-10-05
This book had TONS of inspiration for embroidery and silk ribbon embroidery. Lots of monograms and designs that can be adapted easily. I use it all the time! I've also noticed a few Anna Griffin designs seem to be inspired from this book as well!
Book Description
This second volume of "moving meditations" shows how simple Japanese flower arranging (ikebana) techniques can be used to refresh the body and restore the spirit. Emphasizing that ikebana is first and foremost a "Way"--a spiritual and meditative art--the book offers solid grounding in Japanese aesthetics and philosophy, with references to Zen, tea ceremony, and other traditional Japanese arts. Line drawings and color photographs show step-by-step arrangements especially for beginners and casual practitioners.

The Japanese Way of the Flower.......2001-09-18
Flowers--not on, but as a spiritual path. This is the principle behind kado--widely known in the West as ikebana--the Japanese art of aesthetic flower arranging. The point is emphatically made that, as with other spiritual art forms, it is not the art itself that leads to awakening and profound realizations; rather, it is how we approach the practice that determines our growth. In kado, the simple meditation exercises prepare for the process of composition; a genuine understanding of harmony of mind and body and of the oneness of nature are essential to success. Fully half of the book is devoted to preparation--a thorough understanding of the concepts, and development of effective meditation techniques. A chapter expands on the fundamental principles of kado--harmony, asymmetrical balance, artlessness, impermanence, and oneness with the universe--and to the classification of arrangements. A final chapter guides the beginner in several simple arrangements, while appendices provide sources for supplies and a glossary. Lovely and elegant line drawings illustrate important points throughout.
An impressive, authoritative, and comprehensive introduction.......2001-01-31
In The Japanese Way Of The Flower, Davey and Kameoka successfully collaborate to instruct the reader in the Japanese art of flower arranging and how it differs from Western floral art. The reader will learn simple meditation exercises to prepare for the process of composition; basic flower arrangements with color photos, diagrams, and step-by-step instructions; important Japanese aesthetic and spiritual concepts; the history of "kado" (The Way of the Flower) and its different stylistic schools; and where to find formal kado instructors and flower arrangement supplies. A very welcome addition to students of Japanese culture, interior decorators, florists, and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in floral arrangements, The Japanese Way Of The Flower is an impressive, authoritative, and comprehensive introduction.
Book Description
In this strikingly beautiful and revolutionary work, Kawase has taken a fresh approach to flower arranging, demonstrating through breathtaking color photographs his universally appealing style of bringing nature indoors.
Often misunderstood as a static art form, its rules frozen by generations of teachers, Japanese flower arranging should in fact be a dynamic relationship between man and nature, with every arrangement holding within it infinite possibilities of form and statement.
While based on a thorough knowledge of traditional techniques, Kawase's designs are liberated by his personal response to the natural environment. The arranger, in his view, is an artist, not tied down by the received way of doing things, but free to express himself. The object, ideally, is to
create a form of a floral poetry.
Hence the word "inspired" in the title: his aim being to inspire, to suggest new ways of designing with flowers. At the same time, though, he provides practical tips for beginners; explains the importance of using the right containers, and shares his own thoughts on what makes a particular
arrangement eye-catching or graceful.
Here, in a new, slightly smaller format than before is one of the most unusual and beautiful books of its kind ever published.
Customer Reviews:
a work of art.......2002-05-21
Not only the flower arrangements, but also the photography, the re-production, and the text is done with much attention to artistic expression, the book itself is a work of art. A delight for the heart and soul.
art (not instruction).......2000-10-14
Beautiful photographs of, yes, inspired flower arrangements. These arrangements go beyond ikebana in the formal sense, and head out into mixed-media art territory. The photography is lovely as well. If you're looking for ikebana instruction, this is probably not it. But if you love plants, art, Asian/minimalist aesthetics, and/or lovely photography, drink deep.

Book Description
For centuries people have been using flowers and plants to decorate their homes. In a lovely book that combines practical how-to advice with informative social history, Mary Rose Blacker details the use of flowers and plants in houses throughout Britain, Europe, and North America-from the delicate bouquets of the 16th century to the extravagant displays of the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Just as recipes culled from old cookbooks provide a taste of the past, so flowers and plants enhance the authentic appearance of a period room. Stunning photographs of specially commissioned floral arrangements, shown in the houses and great estates preserved by Britain's National Trust, offer ideas and step-by-step instructions for arranging Elizabethan wedding bouquets, Georgian-style garlands, Victorian table decorations, and much more.
200 photographs, 165 in full color, 8 3/4 x 9 5/8"
MARY ROSE BLACKER has worked with Britain's National Trust for 30 years, and was research assistant to the noted architectural historian Gervase Jackson-Stops. Blacker, who grew up in Ireland and whose family includes such knowledgeable and well-known gardeners as Lady O'Neill of the Maine, was instrumental in re-creating the famous 18th-century flower displays at the Trust's Osterley Park in 1985.
ANDREAS VON EINSIEDEL is an acclaimed photographer of interiors whose work has appeared in such magazines as House & Garden and Architectural Design and in Abrams' Historic Interiors of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Mostly Dry History, Little Arrangements.......2006-04-19
Mostly dry historical text, and most of the "photos" are not of the recreated new arrangements, but of ancient paintings and old drawings about history. Of the very few recreated arrangements, most look rather ordinary, with some photos even too small to tell. There were only 4 or 5 that I'd say were truly original and outstanding.
Flora Domestica - Blooming Marvellous!.......2000-06-13
I had this book recommended to me by a college. As it's a new book I thought I'd have a look. Having studied Floristry and Flower Arranging I am now Lecturing in Floristry and have been looking for a new book to recommend to my students. This book has long been awaited by students and teachers alike. A lot of books covering this subject have been written, but are now out of print. This will fill the gap. A beautiful book. I can't recommend it enough. Blooming marvelous!

It is rare to discover an auther who has focused on the topic of flower arranging from a sociological perspective. By placing flower arranging in the social context of it's time, the reader is better able to appreciate the use of particular flowers, artistic design and color combinations. Also, by looking to England, we here in the U.S. can better appreciate our colonial era of flower arranging.

Lovely, Natural Christmas Decorations.......2004-11-22
I've used this book over and over to decorate my home at Christmas with Southern style arrangements. Demonstrating these techniques for garden clubs and at libraries, I always found a ready audience for this and it was really easy. I learned it all from this book.
The supplies are easy to gather (pinecones, apples, oranges, holly, greenery, wire, ribbon, etc.). The results are spectacular. Your arrangements will look very professional!
Each page shows four or more drawings showing the steps for attaching the pieces to make a different decoration. It shows various wreaths, table decorations, swags, roping, corner accents for doors, mantel decorations and an herb kissing ball.
If you ever visited Williamsburg at Christmas, you will want to recreate these beautiful arrangements in your home. This website gives you an idea of the variety you can create:

Excellent presentation and accompanying text........1999-07-23
I have seen this book at the publisher's and it is outstanding. The photographs are exceptional and the descriptions well composed and pertinent. You have, however, left out the name of the CO-AUTHOR, Mary Miley Theobald. I hope you will correct this as both professionals worked long and hard to assemble the edition.
Book Description
