Burpee has created a truly encyclopedic, but non-intimidating, guide to organic vegetable gardening that can be used and appreciated by anyone, whether or not they've ever stuck a seed in the ground. All the essential information is here--how to condition the soil, how and where to plant, sprouting schedules, what kind of yield to expect from each plant variety, and harvesting tips--in beautiful, bountiful, illustrated detail; the book's largest section, "Plant Portraits," contains explanations of the many cultivars of each vegetable and herb. If you're a novice vegetable gardener or new to organic gardening and can only afford one gardening guide, this may be your best value.

Great overview book.......2007-06-09
This book is great if you're a beginner gardener, and want just one book to sit down and read that covers all aspects of gardening. You'll want to go on an buy other books that go into more detail on specific topics, but this is a great place to start, and one to keep on the shelf.
It is presented as a gardening book should be - a large hardcover with lots of glossy colour photographs.
Chapters are:
1) Growing you own
2) Getting Started
3) Garden Tools & Equipment
4) Improving the soil
5) Laying out the Garden
6) Planting the Garden
7) Caring for the Garden
8) Coping with Garden Problems
Should be called the Coffee Table Encyclopedia of Gardening.......2007-03-10
I am so impressed with this big, beautiful book! The photos are inspiring, and the technical aspects are thoroughly covered. I love the historic background of each vegetable and herb.
I think there is literally everything I ever needed to know about vegetable gardening from seed germination, through care and feeding, to harvest. Detailed charts outline fertilizer, pests, water, soil conditions, and planting and harvest times.
I keep it on my coffee table and flip through it daily just to enjoy the photos and learn some new fact.
You will not be disappointed with this book!
Gardners Dictionary.......2006-10-31
I am a new gardener and this book has helped so much! I look everything up in it. RIght down to problems with plant to how much water each plant gets. It has a guide to all plants and great pictures. Also has tips for gardening.
Well Organized, Comprehensive, Excellent Layout.......2002-08-14
Burpee's "The Complete Vegetable and Herb Gardener: A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically" is fantastic. In addition to what Burpee lists on the back cover of what is inside the book, there are also many easy-reading tables that contain excellent information such as the vitamin(s) that each vegetable contains, different cultivars, plant PH needs, watering needs per week, crop yields, etc. Many interesting tidbits.
The layout is so wonderful, one does not feel overwhelmed with all of the information that is in the book!
Vegatable Gardening Made Really Easy.......2001-11-02
Very similar in content and structure to Ortho's Complete Guide to Vegtables. The difference comes in the experience the writer has growing and maitaining the various plants. I find using both books gives different perspectives for growing and caretaking of plants but conatins the same basic information. For instance the Ortho book has better Garden Setup and maintenance data, and raw data on the various gardening aspects like fertilizer and pest eradiction. The Burpee book focuses on plant and cultivar details a little better. The book is filled with plenty high quality pictures of plants and their fruits using multiple pictures of various cultivars within plant families.
The book is geared for both beginners in gardening and the handy do it yourselfer types. Chapters progress you through the steps from site selection and plant selection to harvesting, crop rotating and soil conditioning over winter and indoor greenhouse seed starting. The book also contains references to various cultivars within vegtable species, so a beginner gardener could not only successfully select and grow well know vegtables, but could also grow and use the odd often hard to find fresh herbs.
I consistently flip between both this book and Ortho's book. I find using them in this manner makes the information extracted complimentary and thorough.

How to For Herbs.......2004-01-02
Four chapters on herbs provide what promised: complete guide. The first chapter is on how to grow and raise. The second then talks about herbs in various habitats, i.e. fully shaded, etc.
The third concerns designing with herbs, while the fourth is a dictionary.
Book Description
Herbs sets a new standard of excellence for illustrated gardening books. Turid Forsyth's photographs and watercolor illustrations capture all the beauty and detail of these fascinating and practical plants. Patrick Lima's highly readable and entertaining text, chock-full of helpful advice and wry anecdotal observations, packs the maximum amount of information in the most accessible and enjoyable form.
Chapters are devoted to: Selecting and Growing Herbs, Soil, Perennial Kitchen Herbs, Thyme, Alliums, Herbs to Blend and Brew, Herbs for Fragrance, Growing Herbs Indoors, Cooking with Fresh Herbs and Gathering Wild Herbs. A chapter is devoted to herbs with seeds such as caraway, chives, coriander, cress, mustard and poppy and another to sages for seasoning and teas as well as for adding color to the flowerbed.
This volume, as beautiful as it is useful, combines the wisdom of two longtime gardeners to make
Herbs, The Complete Gardener's Guide, a delightful and essential addition to any gardener's library.

Beautiful & inspiring.......2003-04-25
"I want to plant a herb garden!"
That's how I felt after reading this book!
I learnt that herbs are beautiful, useful & so colorful, yet they are easy to grow.
The book shows many pictures so you know how the herbs look & how to arrange them. It also introduces other herbs that you may have forgotten about. The book chapters make it easy & helpful to look through, chapters such as: herbs that seed, salads, tea, silver colored herbs, flowering, scented etc.
At the end there are tips on planting, freezing & drying. Also a few herb recipes that look delicious, but I haven't tried them yet.
All in all a beautiful book to look at

I've not only read this book a few times, but attended Kath's workshop on Redirecting Children's Behavior! Great book, wonderful and very useful info that needs to be shared by all!!!!
Wow! Best parenting book I've ever read, by far........2007-06-29
A few years back, a friend of mine gave me a copy of this book. I read through it, liked what I read, and decided to try a few of the suggestions it contained. I was AMAZED at how insightful and effective the approach in this book is. I am a parent and I also work in a school, and this book has made a significant impact in improving the environment both at my home and at the school. More important than the techniques and suggestions outlined in the book, though, is its general philosophy: all misbehavior is communication -- if you understand the goal of the misbehavior, you can avoid yelling and fighting with your kids and instead "redirect" the behavior and discipline in a way that is more loving AND more effective. Eventually, I contacted the company that publishes this book and got trained through them to teach the corresponding parenting course -- also amazing. I strongly recommend this book to all parent of children or teens, as I feel that it's relevant to both age groups.
Best Parenting Book!.......2007-04-29
I am the mother of a [...] son who has been diagnosed with Asperger's disorder. When he was 18 mos. I was at my wits end and my pediatrician recommended this book and the class that is available in some areas to take with it. It completely ghanged our lives! When my son was diagnosed at 5 we started to see a therapist to help with our adjustment and the school issues. He credited the book with how well adjusted my son was and said that had we seen him earlier he would have had me implement the same techniques described in this book.
I love that it helps you teach your children self-discipline. Other books suggest techniques that require you to be the "behavior police". That method seems to teach children that you can do wrong as long as no one sees it. I'd rather teach children to do the right thing from a stance of having made a reasoned decision with regard for the consequences of one's actions. This book teaches you how to create this process within your children.
Not every technique applies to every age but that just means that you will have a resource to return to as your children grow. I have recommended this book to countless friends and am buying my second copy.
Great service.......2007-02-11
I was very pleased with the service...the book arrived the next day and was not even sent federal express. The book was in excellent condition and was a good price. Previously, I had purchased one from Overstock for my daughter and it took over a week to arrive
One of the most wonderful parenting books ever written.......2006-11-27
This book has wisdom that could not be learned in a thousand lifetimes of raising children. Quite simply it teaches you how to parent in an effective and non-judgemental way so that everyone's feelings and desires are considered but you still achieve your goals as a parent. I have used it on children, nieces & nephews and even adults my age and I must tell you that it works.
For example, when a young nephew spilled apple juice on a niece's newly colored princess picture, she burst into tears. Her father tried in vain to distract her, telling her to stop crying, in order to end the extremely loud sobbing. (Any embarassed parent would do this! It's your first reaction and is so natural!) Remembering what this book had taught, I toweled up the apple juice and softly said "Let her mourn. It was a beautiful picture and a terrible accident has happened. My brother did the same thing to one of my drawings when I was in the second grade and it was heartbreaking. She has the right to be sad right now." Within an instant of a second my niece stopped her loud sobbing and stared at me in disbelief. Her dad was surprised, too, at how quickly the dramatic wails had ceased. A few big tears still rolled down her cheek and there certainly was a follow-up whimper or two, but she was instantly ready to get out the blow dryer and salvage the picture, all because I had said I understood her sadness and it was okay for her to cry. Why did it have the complete opposite effect? Because the frustration of being told to "quit crying" when she had a right to cry wasn't added to the mix of her emotions. She only had to deal with one emotion - the sadness - and when acknowledged by another, she was able to work through it much faster. I give this insightful book 100% credit for that outcome.
I simply adore this book and although I found it almost mind-bending at times to read and comprehend, I truly cherish it. I sincerely mourn that the first copyright date was long before I was born and that my parents did not ever get their hands on this book. I am also sad that I have this wonderful knowledge and yet find it so hard to be as loving and non-judgemental towards my husband who I adore, although I would love to treat him so divinely. Read the book and you'll understand what I mean - you really do become sad each time you don't apply it's wisdom to solving the difficult situations you encounter in real-life relationships. The good news is this book gives you the power to change and is SO FUN to put into practice!

Provides a structured way of thinking.......2002-01-31
Although full of practical aides and examples for all ages of children, this book provides excellent flexibility to adapt its way of thinking to your own family's situation. The first 3-4 chapters are more of an overview, and the later chapters provide an excellent detail of how to implement the ideas. It appears to be directed at all ages, and at the entire family, not just the children.
good advice for parents.......2000-09-17
There is so much common sense advice in this book. It's a breath of fresh air to be told to trust your instincts in certain situations. It should really be called "Redirecting your own behavior". If we change the way we view a situation, it makes all the difference.
