Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2005-10-04
This is a handy reference for Alabama and Mississippi gardeners and one that you'll refer to again and again. It is especially great for beginning gardeners who are often confused with the large variety of plants profiled in general gardening guides. The plants profiled here are wise choices for AL and MS although some will perform better in the northern areas of the state and vice-versa.
There are 186 tried and true individual plants featured, organized in sections of "Annuals," "Bulbs," "Groundcovers," "Herbs," "Ornamental Grasses," "Perennials," "Roses," "Shrubs," "Trees," "Vines," and "Water and Bog Plants. Each plant's profile covers an entire page and includes sections on "When, Where and How to Plant," "Growing Tips," "Care," "Companion Planting and Design," and "Personal Favorites." A color photograph, common names, bloom period and seasonal color and mature height and spread of the plant is included. Chapters in the back of the book include "The Low Maintenance Lawn," "General Pest Control," "Landscaping with Native Plants," "Plants to Attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds," "Landscape Tips for Winter Months."
This is a guide that can ease the pain of choosing plants appropriate for the area for beginning gardeners and experienced gardeners will appreciate the practical advice of caring for the plant. I would hope that future editions would include even more plants (there are some that are mysteriously absent) - that would make this an invaluable reference indeed!

Bouquets: a Year of flowers.......2005-09-06
This is an awesome book. It got my creative juices flowing. I use this book for inspiration often.
Inspirational.......2005-06-13
This book is truly beautiful and will inspire anyone to instantly plan a dinner party, a tea, a wedding or shower(actually, any kind of gathering!) in order to put all the wonderful ideas to use. There are so many creative and innovative suggestions for setting a table and it made me look at things I already own in new ways. I also appreciated the suggestions for borrowing from friends and family or purchasing inexpensive pieces to make my old presentations look fresh and new.
It is so hard to pick a favorite from among all those shown - but the Day of the Dead celebration and the white summer wedding are spectacular. The children's birthday in the park will give mothers some great suggestions for a unique party - including menu and recipes.
This book will continue to inspire me for years to come.

These are not your mother's flower arrangements. Ariella Chezar throws out old rules about greenery and focus points and presents us with a wealth of new gifts to decorate our homes. Her ideas incorporate a few classics like roses and peonies, but also make use of grapes, persimmons, olive branches, and Asian eggplants; what they all have in common is a lush beauty and sense of ripeness that add a feeling of real bounty to the rooms they adorn.
After a short introduction covering general techniques and container recommendations, Flowers for the Table takes you through the seasons. Spring is surprisingly sophisticated, rather than more traditionally pastel, featuring unusual checkered lilies and vibrant ranunculus. Summer brings a stunning "tomato feast," with tomatoes of all sorts twining their vines with tiny red roses. Fall lights up with golden calla lilies and orange peppers, while winter charms with succulents and kumquats. Each section comes to a close with a short glossary of the materials used, helpful if you're unfamiliar with such items as Chinese lanterns or euphorbia.
Containing a mellow mix of stunning photography and straightforward suggestion, Flowers for the Table will give you both inspiration and specific direction whether you're planning a wedding or just looking to dazzle your dinner guests. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Filled with lush seasonal arrangements, Flowers for the Table is the perfect guide to creating a gorgeous centerpiece for any celebration or gathering. What makes floral designer Ariella Chezar s work so distinctive is her utterly contemporary approach. In the 24 stunning arrangements included, she demonstrates how to fashion centerpieces out of flowers, branches, fruits, fabrics, and unusual flea market treasures. A brunch tabletop is crowned with delicate white bouquets of clematis, ranunculus, lilies, and anemones. An abundance of roses, amaryllis, and berries festooned with ribbons sets the stage for an intimate dinner party. And the hot pinks, reds, and yellows of winter poppies in silk-swathed vases warm the room for a winter cocktail party. From sleek modern arrangements to more traditional bouquets, there s something for every sensibility. Full-color photographs, an introduction to each season and the flowers and greenery available, a glossary for each section, and countless tips make this the ultimate guide to creating magnificent table arrangements.

Stunning!.......2003-10-07
Such a beautiful book--I bought this book less for practical instruction and more for inspiration, and I was not disappointed. The arrangements are lush, elegant, classic with a twist. This is truly floral art. There are practical suggestions, and information about each of the flowers used is listed at the end of each section.
I'm not sure how useful this book is for the novice (such as myself) but it offers beauty and inspiration, regardless of skill level.

useless.......2006-04-18
This book has no useful information in it. The pictures are pretty, but I don't spend good money on a book just to look at the pictures. Even the ideas aren't all that creative. If I had cupboards full of antiques and drawers full of beautiful linens, I wouldn't need a book to tell me how to use them. Other, better books show the same techniques and ideas, and show them with materials more easily available to us mere mortals.
The example that really did me in was the little girl's birthday party... with crocheted lace doilies on the drinks glasses, and all the little girls in Edwardian-style lace dresses. PLEASE! You want an example of a pretty child's birthday party, get the Shabby Chic entertaining book.
No new ideas for a woman of culture.......2005-01-12
I regret this purchase. As one reviewer said, this is just a coffetable book. It doesnt introduce any new idea to an educated woman. Who cant roll a napkin and tie a ribbon on it ??? It doesnt take a professional caterer to know that !!! Funny, but an out of print 1960's cookbook by Mary and Vincent Price ``A Treasury.....'' showed far more intricate, elegant, and exquisite napkin foldings. The utensils showed in Tabletops are not even for very dining ! Worse, an old item was made to pass off as an antique centerpiece and I am a professional antique collector. I lived in Europe and this book does not deserve space in any European home or library. What I saw here, I see frequently in crafts store windows in small towns. DONT BUY. I got instead ``Perfect Setting'' by Peri Wolfman (?) and finally, I got something intelligent with truly new ideas to captivate an intelligent woman. At best, give this book to a grade school kid.
Use as coffee table book only.......2004-12-10
The author uses many of her antiques to decorate the table which is nice if you own any yourself. Many ideas were very "english", maybe a little too elegant, not the kind of book for someone looking for different ideas using everyday items or at least items you can find in everyday stores. Nice coffee table book but not easy to recreate her tabletops.
Good basics, easy to follow.......2003-10-18
Great pictures and a great way to get started entertaining. Also, easy and inexpensive ideas wtih decoration (flowers, etc. you can get right from your own garden)
Check it out at the Library first.......2001-09-22
I'm glad I didn't "buy" this book and went to the Library
first. I was looking for more "whimsical" ideas and the
ones offered in this book seem to be the basic, traditional
ones.

Wow! We gave Piazza to my Italian husband for Father's Day and it was a hit with the whole extended family. The photographs captivated all of us-- by either taking us back to Italy in our memories or inspiring the desire for a first visit. Piazza excites and inspires through the very last photo. We can tell the authors/photographers are in love with their subject. This is truly and exceptional book!! Debra Romano

The authors/photographers images are so vibrant and exciting you feel like you've traveled and experienced the moments with them! Not only is this book a must have but a great gift for even the non-traveler!
One of the most lush and beautiful coffee table books I have ever seen.......2007-06-11
Joe Bauwens and MaryBeth Flower love photography and Italy! The results are incandescent. This is a fabulous gift!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2006-11-14
The summary and review were not helpful at all and misleading. As a food service professional, I am always looking for new ideas for tablescapes for my banquet facility. The book was impractical and the centerpieces were uninspiring.
Suddenly A Centerpiece.......2004-12-29
I found this book to be very easy to follow with great color picture samples. The instructions are easy to follow.
You will feel great once you complete the project and it actually looks like the picture!
Wonderfully well done!
Book Description
Gardening on Pavement, Tables, and Hard Surfaces is the first book to describe how to grow garden plants directly on hard surfaces such as pavement, rocks, tables, and other impermeable platforms. Plants have known all along that they can grow on these media, and George Schenk translates this small miracle into practical language for gardeners. With just a few inches of soil, gardens can be created almost anywhere. Tabletops can serve as the foundation for small rock gardens; ground covers can grow vigorously on concrete; even bonsai can thrive directly on decorative stone. Using extensive photos, plant lists, and step-by-step instructions, the author shows how every gardener can adopt this charming, vibrant, and beautiful style of planting.
Customer Reviews:
An unusual "take" on gardening.......2007-05-09
This is an extremely interesting "take" on gardening. It had never occurred to me to plant directly on pavement, but this book convinced me I should try it. I did, and with spectacular results. I now have flowers growing in the middle of my driveway in a strip of dirt that's about 10' x 2' x 4-8" high. It looks much more natural than a traditional raised bed, and, amazingly, the dirt has stayed put without benefit of artificial barriers, just a few judiciously placed rocks. I also now have flowers growing out of a rotting stump. This book opened to me a whole new world of possibilities.
