Book Description
This book steps into the studios of top designers as their ideas happen. Case studies trace the evolution of great logos, symbols and icons, illustrating the process with initial roughs and intermediary sketches that lead up to the final designs for companies including Nike and IBM. In addition, this book expands its boundaries to include symbols and icons, two rarely covered yet increasingly vital areas of design. Gregory Thomas is the owner and principal of Gregory Thomas Associates, a Santa Monica-based design consultancy. The award-winning company boosts an international client list that includes CBS, IBM, Levi Strauss & Company, Yale University, and MCA/Universal Pictures.
Customer Reviews:
Nice book but not that helpfull.......2003-12-01
I bought this book with the idea of creating logos but that was a mistake. But it's a great book when you are interested in processes. This book shows how companies design logos and their process of getting from start to end. So, much talk about the process, no talk about the techniques.
Great book at a great value!.......2003-08-23
I bought this book in the hardcover and still refer to it all the time. Awesome guide to how some of the top firms create logos and their process. I still recommend this book to everyone, especially at this price!
Book Description
Logos are everywhere. You can't walk down a supermarket aisle, open a magazine, drive down the highway or turn on tv without being pummeled with graphic IDs that shout, "Apple Computers!" or "Nike!" or "Purina!"
Now see where great logos, symbols and icons come from. If you want to understand what makes them "tick"--what makes them good--then look here. This is not your typical collection of neat-and-polished, finished designs. This book steps into the international studios of top designers as ideas happen--to show you what worked, what didn't, and why. You'll even get an up-close and personal look at the making of symbols and icons--two fast-growing, but rarely covered, fields of design.
Inside, case studies illustrate the evolution of logos, symbols and icons created for a variety of clients, from small, start-up businesses to large corporations. You'll get the whole creative story--from the initial client briefing ... through early roughs and intermediary sketches ... to the ultimate, finished design. Don't miss this rare, real-world look at how designers sum up a business or a product in a single, graphic signature.

Process Study.......2003-05-02
This book is helpful in that it shows you what is involved in the design process of creating a successful logo. It doesn't show you exactly how to make one yourself but gives examples of how certain logo's where produced.
More Coffee Table Than Professional Book.......2002-07-09
How To Design Logos (Forget about symbols and icons, there is maybe two or three pages on these aspects in the book.) is more for a general audience than the professional designer.
It has 24 studios working on projects from large to small. One thing I immediately noticed was the influence of the "net" design style of most of the projects. Having been published in late 2000, before the dot bomb era: this was where the bread and butter for these shops was developing. Alas, now they must go elsewhere and their designs after only a year or two seem dated.
I believe it is a good book for the non-professional. Each project has a small write up on how the design was done. These write up are no way an indepth study of the rendering of the logo. It does have great graphics and examples of the development of the logos.
For the coffee table or non-professional I gave it three stars, but if you are looking for professional advice I would give it two.
Excellent study of how logos are developed........2001-12-28
Buy this book! This is a terrific resource for any designer, art director or student wanting to learn more about how a logo or brand evolves from the drawing board to the billboard.
I'm making this required reading for my designers!
Response to the reader from Manhattan Beach, CA.......2001-02-03
I have to say that I do and don't agree with the reader from Manhattan Beach, CA. I agree that reaching a target audience is very important in any identity system. This book, as stated, is designed not just for the art director or the designer, but for student, the entrepeneur, the marketing manager, the high level executive (i.e. CEO, CMO) Etc. According to the review, this book has achieved that goal with flying colors. I have to disagree with the rest of the review. This book's other goal was to enlighten the reader as to the process behind the final logo. To say that the range of logos in the book is average to excellent misses the whole point. It is not a ranking book like so many other logo books. Each logo was simply supposed to represent the very different processes and solutions possible. They were supposed to inspire the creative process and educate the reader (prospective client maybe) on what the process involves. If you follow the purpose of the book, they each stand on their own as excellent examples of creatively tackling the design process. In reading this book, the Philharmonic example was meant to show that although the computer is heavily used today, some ideas still rely on old solutions. In this case, there is no need to show other concepts. It would be hard to illustrate all the concepts and try to make the same point in four pages. Overall, this is a successful book on branding, identity and design.
Inspiriational and Technical.......2000-12-13
As much inspirational as technical, How to Design Logos, Symbols and Icons provides a clear vision of the intricacies and factors that go into the successful design of logos and symbols. Spending more than 100 of its 142 pages delving into the decisions and considerations that are behind some of the most successful and recognizable corporate trademarks in America today, How to Design Logos, Symbols and Icons is an invaluable resource for today's graphic designer. The main vehicle this work uses as an instructional guide is the real life examples of many major corporations and how they approached the design and use of the symbols we all immediately recognize today as well as what they rejected and why. This, coupled with clear forthright descriptions, explanations, and instruction in the basics of this genre of graphic design, make this a must have for the novice, student, expert, or anyone seeking insight into the process that created these remarkable designs. How to Design Logos, Symbols and Icons gives its readers not only what they need to create designs but also to successfully judge the acceptability and appeal of presented designs. In fact, you will never look at the logos and trademarks that surround you in quite the same way again. This book is a must for those interested in the field or currently facing design challenges themselves. Whether you're a novice or a professional, this work will not only get your creative juices flowing, but flowing in a proven direction of success.

Customer Reviews:
For those that still do this..........2007-09-11
This book is a nice and detailed overview of the process, but for me the best part has to have been the darkroom setup ideas for "alternative" spaces. If you've got very little room to work with but you're stubbornly attached to the idea of setting up your own darkroom, this book is definitely worth a look.
The perfect book!.......2004-08-15
This book is amazing. It really has everything you would need to know to build a darkroom, from building the walls, doing plumbing and electricity, to how to build a sink. I am so happy I bought this book - there were so many little things I didn't even consider until I started reading this book. Now I know what I need to build the darkroom, and can actually envision what it will be like. I have so many ideas, and I'm really excited about building my darkroom!
This is the book you want if you are going to build a darkro.......2003-03-14
This is the book you want if you are going to build a darkroom. It is excelent! I got another book and half of it was how to build a wall using drywall. This one was not like that and really had plans and technical information that you want.
The only guide you will ever need to building a darkroom.......2000-04-01
I just purchased this book because i am planning to build a darkroom in my basement, and it has provided me with alot of information. And if you have a really small bathroom and you think it's impossible to turn it into a darkroom and use it at the same time, then you better get this book. There are floorplans/layouts & elevation provided, as well as pictures to give you an idea of how your darkroom will turn out. There are so many alternatives given that you can't go wrong in builiding the perfect darkroom of your own and save money as well.
A GREAT BOOK FOR LESS THAN PERFECT CONDITIONS.......2000-02-14
I found this book to be very practical and direct. What impressed me most was that the authors took into account the fact that not everyone has the ideal accomodations for a darkroom. Each section goes into the how-to of every phase of setting up a simple, basic to the sophisticated darkroom. Everything is spelled out in detail allowing you to "opt out" of any part of the process that you feel may be "over your head" (call the plummer) and to deal with those that are within your reach. In between, the book allows you to peek at how others have set up their facilities. Over all a great book for anyone looking to set up a dark room the "right way".

Book Description
"The artistic heritage of this place does matter." David Salle
Julian Schnabel owns a 10-bedroom Stanford White spread in Montauk, and Ross Bleckner has settled into Truman Capote's Sagaponack saltbox. The Hamptons have come a long way since Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner borrowed $5,000 from Peggy Guggenheim to pay for an unheated farmhouse in Springs, but one thing hasn't changed: the East End's allure to America's leading artists. In Studios by the Sea, Vanity Fair correspondent Bob Colacello and photographer Jonathan Becker go inside the renovated barns, split-shingled cottages, and minimalist mansions of the modern-day artist colony that is Long Island's East End.
Larry Rivers, John Chamberlain, April Gornik, Chuck Close, and David Salle are among the 40 prominent painters and sculptors featured in this gossipy, anecdotal book, full of luscious, sunlight-infused images.

Artists of Long Island's East End.......2007-02-19
This is a beautiful book, with great shots of the studios of different artists. The studios are as different
from each other as the artists are themselves. It has given me great inspiration in designing my own
studio.
Book Description
"Several years ago, 26 prominent studio furniture-makers were asked to design works of furniture based on period pieces in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The result is an explosion of form and fantasy in which past and present are mergedUa celebration of the continued existence of small-scale furniture making in the midst of mass production. Among the works discussed in this lavishly illustrated book are pieces by Garry Knox Bennett, JohnCederquist, Kristina Madsen, Judy Kensley McKie, Michael Pierschalla, and Paul Sasso. In an insightful and detailed essay, author Edward Cooke Jr. contextualizes these works, outlining their complex relationship with American traditions of furniture design."

American Country Building Design: Rediscovered Plans for 19th-Century Farmhouses, Cottages, Landscapes, Barns, Carriage Houses & Outbuildings
ASIN: 0966307534 |
Book Description
If you love the look of traditional buildings and need a new garage, guest house, small home, backyard office, stable, studio or workshop, this is the book for you.
Seventeen talented architects and designers provided drawings of 44 of their best Carriage Barns. All have the charm of yesterday's carriage houses, but they're all modern designs that you can build from efficient blueprints or building kits. Since many of the buildings have flexible plans and optional sizes, there are actually 142 different layouts here for you to choose from.
The book includes a gallery of 26 authentic 19th century carriage barns for your inspiration, and a directory of 168 catalogs and websites with sources of old-time hardware, vintage timber frames, coach house lamps, stable equipment, cupolas, weather vanes, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Very good resource/directory /inspiration.......2001-01-26
Excellent directory of hard-to-find plan catalogs, websites, products, references and materials. I found the illustrations of garages, horse barns and apartment barns to be lovely, and I liked that I could reach the architects/designers directly for more information on their designs. Many websites given here don't seem to appear on search engines, so this book will help you with your Internet search for plans. This is similar in format to Berg's "Barns and Backbuildings" and "Backroad Home" and, like those, will be a great help if you're dreaming to build.
Valuable ideas.......2000-10-13
Wow, this book is great! Terrific plans and a great resource tool. Just what I needed for inspiration. There are samples of the carriage barn, stable and garage designs on Donald Berg's website...See for yourself!
GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT..........2000-10-03
THIS IS A VERY DISAPPOINTING COMPILATION. THE INFORMATION GIVEN IS EITHER AN ADVERTISMENT TO BUY OTHER DESIGNERS' IDEAS, OR IS ALREADY READILY AVAILABLE FOR FREE ON THE INTERNET. MOST OFFENSIVE ARE THE TERRIBLE RENDERINGS; FIRSTLY, BECAUSE THEY ARE IN LIGHT GREY, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DISCERN ANY DETAILS, AND SECONDLY, MANY OF THEM ARE NOT EVEN CORRECTLY DRAWN TO PERSPECTIVE! ANYONE CONSIDERING USING THESE RECOMMENDED DESIGNERS SHOULD HAVE THEIR HEADS - AND EYES - CAREFULLY EXAMINED.
Makes the "first building" question easy to answer.......2000-05-01
First, the definition provided by Berg: "In certain parts of the country, the terms `carriage house' and `carriage barn' are synonymous with any building that combines a garage and an apartment." The value of this book thus becomes obvious; many of us are faced with the dilemma of which to build first, the house or storage building to shelter tools and materials. So here's the answer, build a carriage barn that serves both purposes. Later, one can build the dream house and use the previous apartment as guest quarters or writing/painting/sculpture/crafts studio. As with his other books, Berg stimulates and inspires with lots of drawings showing classic and contemporary solutions to questions of style. Drawings from previous centuries and current working architects give a panorama of choices. Whether restoring an old carriage house or building a new one, this book is a useful tool for finding ideas, plans, and salvaged or new products for authentic construction or reconstruction.
