In spite of the title, we have been told by experienced orchid growers in the U.S. that this little handbook is useful for growing orchids indoors anywhere in the world. It is beautifully illustrated and full of practical information on orchid culture and propagation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Book for the Tropics.......2004-02-13

This is the only book I have been able to find that is specific to orchid growing in the tropics.
The kinds of orchids this book gives details on are the ones that grow best in my particular location: tropical Hilo, Hawaii. I'm definitely a hobby orchidist, not into nomenclature, mericloning, or anything fancy like that; I buy plants in flower that I like and always have luck with getting them to grow and bloom again in these ideal conditions. Nonetheless, I do enjoy reading about species, hybrids, and methods of propagation, and this book has a lot of interesting details for more serious or commercial growers. The illustrations are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for all orchid growers beginning to advanced........2000-03-24

Wonderful finally a book that clearly shows disease processes and treatments with excellent photography. The anatomy and growing instructions are complete and easy to understand. It is written so that anyone can grow orchids from terrace to orchid house. I find it exceptional in that it takes into consideration the hot humid condions that exist here in So. Fla. (zone 10).

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to growing orchids in warm climate.......1999-11-01

Intended for beginners or moderately experienced growers, this book is well written with a wealth of photographs and diagrams. It is easy to read and has sections on most topics of interest to the tropical orchid grower.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners to gurus on tropical culture.......1997-07-09

I read this book as a novice orchid grower living in sub-tropical conditions. It is well written and has many fantastic pictures to back up the text. I found the book extremely helpful in both orchid identification and as a reference tool for cultural problems. It is easy to read and I would recommend it to anyone growing orchids outdoors

Book Description

Orchids in any setting make for a beautiful sight, but native orchids growing in their natural habitats offer an especially rewarding view for plant enthusiasts, naturalists, and nature lovers of all ages. South Carolina hosts a rich potpourri of these enormously popular wildflowers, thanks in large part to its unique position as the lower boundary of more northerly species and upper boundary of species found in Florida and the gulf states. In Wild Orchids of South Carolina, James Alexander Fowler captures with spectacular photography and encyclopedic knowledge the full glory of the state's native orchid population. From the bogs and bays of the coastal plain to the mountain woodlands, Fowler catalogs rare and widely distributed species, offering a wealth of information for identifying these prized plants.

In addition to providing photographs of each species, Fowler includes common and scientific names, flower descriptions, bloom times, ranges, habitats, pollinators, and refreshingly candid personal observations about the orchids as he encountered them in the wild. He details his experiences of coming upon a show-stopping colony of large yellow lady's slipper orchids (Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens) and of locating the rare monkey-face orchid (Platanthera integrilabia).

Paul Martin Brown, a nationally renowned botanist and wild-orchid specialist, provides an introduction to the volume. He explains South Carolina's significance in the larger context of North American orchid habitats and prepares the reader for the striking display of beauty and information assembled in this volume.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book focusing exclusively on orchids in South Carolina. .......2005-10-31

A must have compendium of SC species presented in a first-hand accounting of one man's remarkable journey with these plants. Each has a photo of a grouping in situ and closeups of floral parts, there is room for notes and extensive explanations of habitat needs, personal observations, recollections and recommendations for where you might find the plant. This is an exceptional book and I highly recommend it. I recently had an opportunity to correspond with the author and his intoxication with our wild orchids is contageous and enlightening.

2 out of 5 stars unremarkable.......2005-10-16

This guide offers a concise overview of the cultivated trees (mostly fruit trees) of SE Asia. The narrow size of the book suggests that it was designed for the glove compartment of a car. I can well imagine it may come in handy as a first check. The distribution maps are a nice feature.

Nevertheless, in such a guide I would really expect more in the way of illustrations. The plates are dominated by tree silhouettes (often in black) and the watercolor pictures of flowers and fruits don't get as much room as would be desirable: often they are printed rather smallish.

In this day and age of glorious color photography this 1995 guide looks rather modest, certainly at this price.

4 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Guide.......2001-08-05

Michael Jensen has provided foresters, agronomists, sociologists, economists, ecologists, students and anyone interested in the botany of Southeast Asia with an invaluable guide. And there can be no doubt that this guide is much needed: previously there had been no easily found guide in print for the identification of the cultivated trees of Southeast Asia. The color plates in the book include close-up renderings of bark, leaves, and fruit, as well as pictures of the whole trees in juxtaposition with people or animals to give a sense of the plant's size. Jensen has also included easy to read maps that show the trees' distribution throughout Southeast Asia. The guide's only fault (if one would call it that) is that its scope is limited to cultivated trees. Jensen intended the guide to be used to increase cultivation of these plants, and so had no intention of trying to put together a comprehensive guide to all the trees and plants of Southeast Asia, which would be a momentous task indeed, but one that is desperately needed nonetheless. Perhaps, if we're lucky, a complete field guide to Southeast Asia will be Orchid Press and Mr. Jensen's next endeavor.

    Book Description

Cattleyas are frequently called "the Queen of the Orchids," and Carl Withner's passion for them started before World War II. About 12 years ago he published the first in this series of six books, which now comes to a conclusion with this final volume. The South American Encyclia species have not previously been the subject of a book, and the genus presents many problems and difficulties. A few of the species are known from a single herbarium specimen and may well now be extinct because of the continuing loss of habitat.

This volume also includes taxonomic and nomenclatural changes affecting species covered in the earlier volumes, as well as additions and changes to the text of each of the five volumes.

Thie stunning book shows the real splendour of orchids in their natural environment. It's an intelligent book, thoughful and caring in its obvious respect for the Florida wildlands and orchids of the world. The images are for conservation afficionados as well as the average person who cares for nature, as well, of course, for orchid lovers around the world. It's a great Christmas gift because it appeals to so many different audiences, and because it reflects on the serenity and spirit of the natural world. And, especially for those in Florida, a great gift for clients and customers

5 out of 5 stars Capture the imagination.......2006-10-15

In Wild Love Affair, Connie Bransilver writes that "Orchids capture the imagination . . . evoke an insatiable passion, a sensual appeal . . . [and] cast a powerful spell." That is exactly what she has achieved in this beautiful book. It is a sensual delight of photography from a passionate orchid aficionado. Bransilver captures the imagination of orchid lovers and those who merely appreciate the beauty of nature in all its forms. Anyone on your gift list this holiday season would appreciate this wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift Idea.......2006-10-11

Wild Love Affair is a beautiful book to display. Connie Bransilver takes exotic exquisite photographs. The essay collection takes you to deep swamps and secret places with environmental heroes. Wild Love Affair would make a special gift for birthdays or holidays, especially Floridian flower lovers. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful celebration of Florida flora.......2004-07-09

This book from Nature photographer/writer Connie Bransilver is a true celebration of Florida's native, mystical orchids. 'Wild Love Affair', which is more photo-poetry than field guide, gives colorful insight into the intoxicating world of 'Orchid Fever', an epidemic which regularly captures the minds and hearts of sunshine state naturalists. A combination of essays from leading orchid experts gives the book an authoratative feel, without lulling a reader to sleep with page after page of textbook style writing. The photographs, which are the highlight of this hard cover edition, get you intimately close to these elegant flowers without having to trudge through thick swamp land to enjoy them. Visitors to my home have a hard time putting it back down on the coffee table once they have picked it up! If you have even the slightest interest in Florida flora, scenery, or entrancing color photography...this book is a must!

4 out of 5 stars Another entertaining book by Jack Kramer.......2000-09-04

This is a great book for anyone trying to grow and bloom orchids in a warm climate. The focus is on the southern United States, but the information will be useful for other areas as well.

The photographs selected are gorgeous and contain a good mix of flower closeups and displays of plants grown in home settings. Basic orchid cultural information is presented in an entertaining way with plenty of illustrations.

Topics include: tips on buying orchids, natural orchid habitats, growing and housing indoor orchids, 200 orchids suitable for southern growers and chapters focusing on outdoor orchids and cut flowers.

One of the most helpful sections of the book is the "Quick-Reference Orchid Chart" which is a alphabetical listing of orchids and their cultural requirements, size and usual time of bloomng.

The Appendix includes lists of mail order sources for orchids and supplies, orchid society contact information and a glossary.

      Book Description

This authoritative guide showcases the unmatched beauty and diversity of the native orchids of the southern Appalachian mountains. Based on Stanley Bentley's many years of nature study, it covers the 52 species—including one discovered by Bentley and named after him—found in a region encompassing western Virginia and North Carolina and eastern West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The entry for each orchid provides the plant's scientific and common names, a description of the flower (including color, shape, and size), and information on the time of flowering, range, and typical habitat, all in the context of the southern mountains. A range map accompanies each description, and Bentley's own superb photographs are an additional aid to identification.

Using straightforward language yet incorporating the most up-to-date scientific information and nomenclature, the book will be welcomed by amateur naturalists or professional botanists looking for species in the field and by those who simply enjoy photographs of beautiful wildflowers.

5 out of 5 stars As Beautiful As the Orchids.......2002-05-13

This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.

This is the third volume in a landmark series of six books devoted to the genera of the "Cattleya" alliance. Carl Withner's extensive experience, study, and research give readers access to an unparalleled range of information about appearance, growth habit, incidence, and cultivation of each species he describes. In addition to his considerable expertise, Dr. Withner brings clarity, precision, order, and enthusiasm to the complexities the genera present. The clear and detailed text is supported by photographs, type illustrations, and diagrams. Some species are illustrated here for the first time, and of special note is the reproduction of one of artist Margaret Mee's unpublished paintings of "Sophronitis". Volume III presents information of "Schomburgkia and Sophronitis", along with twelve other Brazilian and South American genera. With increasing interest in habitat survival and in the conservation of all species. avid orchid hobbyist wish to see and know more about the lesser-known taxa. The general run of taxa in this volume is not to be found in ordinary orchid books and will be great interest to enthusiasts. Useful both as botanical and a horticultural reference, this is the most complete and up-to-date work on the genera included. Writing in the "American Orchid Society Bulletin", Rebecca Northen said of the first volume "This is a book for all time. It and the five volumes to follow will form a grand addition to orchid libraries...(a) source of information for years to come."

If you are looking for a coffee table book with lots of glossy pictures, this book is not for you. The title may be a bit misleading: while there are plenty of anti-aging ideas presented here, Anti-Aaging Prescriptions also contains chapters devoted to the more general topics of pain relief, weight loss, and insomnia. Written with lots of personal advice from James Duke (who has a Ph.D., not an M.D.), you'll find recipes for everything from mouthwash to skin cream, along with recommendations for following a "Paleolithic" diet and getting plenty of exercise. To Duke, "Paleolithic" means lots of raw-plant food and steady exercise, so really it's just a fun term for what we already know: eating vegetables and grains and working up a sweat are good for us.

The number of herbs mentioned in this book may be overwhelming if you read it cover to cover, so start with the specific sections that you find of particular interest. The table of contents is laid out very specifically, so you can turn right to the section on angina, joint pain, bunions, impotence, or whatever health issue you're looking to improve. Duke has anywhere from 5 to 20 suggested herbs or supplements for any condition, along with the best way of growing or buying that herb and the proper dosage and method of application. Some herbs, such as ephedra, are known to be potentially dangerous, and Duke does an excellent job cautioning users to follow proper dosages as carefully as you would any prescription medicine. He writes with plenty of personal experience and includes interesting anecdotes, but his discussions of particular studies tend to be on the vague side--he may tell you the positive results, but not mention the year the study was published, or who conducted it. Still, anecdotal evidence is enough proof for most of us, and Dr. Duke's upbeat tone, wealth of information, and specific recipes may be just what the doctor ordered. --Jill Lightner

      Book Description

On one recent Fourth of July, Peggy and I skipped the manmade fireworks. Instead, we pulled a few lawn chairs past our gazebo into the Garden of Youth to watch nature's own pyrotechnics, the cosmic dance of the evening primrose blossoms and the hawk moths...... We felt calm and peaceful. We felt alive. Rejuvenated. Young.-From chapter 1For Dr. Jim Duke, even gazing at the blossoms of his favorite herb can be an anti-aging activity. His passion for medicinal plants is understandable: They help him feel and look younger than his 72 years.Dr. Duke is convinced that almost all plants contain compounds that can slow aging and minimize its effects on the body and mind. In The Green Pharmacy Anti-Aging Prescriptions, he identifies the herbs and foods that he believes deliver on the promise of lifelong youth. Some of these plants are familiar, like ginkgo for a sharp memory and garlic for....well, just about anything. Others are just beginning to attract attention, like pigweed to strengthen bones and astragalus to boost the immune system. While Dr. Duke specializes in medicinal plants, he firmly believes that a healthy diet and regular exercise must round out any anti-aging plan. That's why this book combines herbal preventives and treatments with nutritional recommendations and lifestyle strategies. But Dr. Duke isn't advocating a formal anti-aging "program" or "regimen." He's giving you choices, so you can develop your own anti-aging plan, based on your unique needs and concerns.By taking the right herbs, eating the right foods, and making some minor lifestyle adjustments, you can stay healthy and maintain your youthful zest for life. Getting older has never felt so good!

      5 out of 5 stars A VERY fine book.......2007-07-06

As a professional academic biologist with a background in nursing and biomedical research, I highly commend and even more highly recommend Dr. Duke's book. He is a first rate ethnobotanist. This book, and his ohters, should be far better-known and read. Not does does he give sage advice (so to speak) about herbals, he presents a great approach to life and growing older. Read, consider his line of reasoning, and absorb the larger messages in the books. Then, if you're like me you'll eat better, be more suspicious of standard medical answers and and more open to trying herbal approaches that are frequently safer, and sometimes more effective.

I am a skeptic by profession as is Dr. Duke!), but slowly I've tried many of his suggestions. The results? Over the past two years, as I implemented his advice step-by-step, I found my high blood pressure dropping and needing fewer Rx medications; my type II diabetes is under truly superb control; and my blood lipid levels have been termed "all I could ask for " by my excellent family doctor. And one by one, Rx meds are being discontinued. Oh yes - regular use of turmeric and ginger have all but eliminated my pain from osteoarthritis, better than glucosamine ever did. But be prepared to give these trials a few months to see results.

Dr. Duke is the "real thing" and a wise counsel. Bravo, doctor, bravo!

If you're still a doubter after reading these reviews, read Medical Nemesis by Ivan Illich. Then read Dr. Duke. Modern medicine is still pretty primitive.

5 out of 5 stars The scriptures of youth.......2004-05-07

This extensive and voluminous work reveals nature's goldmine that can help us live a healthy life and explains how to maintain youthful looks and combat disease through the use of the right supplements and foods.

Part One: Beautiful Benefits From The Garden Of Youth, deals with phyto-pharmacy, in other words the miracle substances found in fruits, vegetables and herbs. The author explains the concept of the miracle sevens, i.e. the 7 best beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices.

Part Two: Natural Strategies That Stop The Clock, contains chapters on amongst others, the best herbs for staying young, easy breathing (including the Broncho-Buster Tea), cancer prevention, digestion, energy, a healthy heart, immunity, mental sharpness and smooth skin.

Part Three: Fighting The Enemies That Age You points out harmful habits and substances and provides remedies for specific problems and diseases like arthritis, fatigue, hair loss, blood pressure problems, diabetes, cholesterol, varicose veins, insomnia and more.

Anti-Ageing Prescriptions is an excellent guide to longevity by means of medicinal plants and their anti-ageing compounds. It also includes lifestyle strategies and recipes for making 76 elixirs. There is a Consumer's Guide To Self-Care, divided into sections for herbs, essential oils and supplements. The book concludes with a bibliography, resources list and index.

I recommend Anti-Ageing Prescriptions along with Renewal by Timothy J. Smith, Stopping The Clock by Ronald Klatz and Robert Goldman, Forever Ageless by Rothenburg and The Superhormone Promise by William Regelson and Carol Colman. The collected wisdom of these works will light the way to a longer, happier life.

      4 out of 5 stars Sage advice...........2001-08-17

I thought I would be the 50th person to write a "testimonial" for THE GREEN PHARMACY -- ANTI-AGING PRESCRIPTIONS by James Duke, but it turns out no one has written a review to date. This is a big surprise for me because Dr. Duke's book is wonderful.

Dr. Duke (he has a Ph.D.) retired from the USDA where he worked as Chief of the Medicinal Plant Resources Laboratory for years. In retirement (he's age 72), he remains active in ReNuPeru, a medicinl herb garden in the Peruvian Amazon maintained by the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. In other words, he has credentials in plant pharmaecology recognized by the U.S. Government.

Dr. Duke owns a six-acre farmette in Fulton Maryland where he raises medicinal/food plants. I discovered Duke in a book on herbalist gardens entitled, THE HERBALIST'S GARDEN, by Shatoiya and Richard de la Tour. Both books (Duke and de la Tour) were reviewed by a local garden expert in the Washington Post. The Post article and the de la Tour book contain beautiful photographs of Duke's garden but alas he has included no photographs in his own book (why I gave it 4 stars).

I've been growing and using herbs for over forty years (I drank Camomile tea and ate bean and barley soup in the 1960s), and I own a number of books on this subject. Dr. Duke's book on "anti-aging prescriptions" appeals to me because 1) I am older and the book meets my immediate needs, 2) the book is laid out by ailment or "challenge" not by herb. In othr words, I don't have to hunt for salient information.

For example, if you're worried about cracking and peeling skin you can turn to Section 22. 'Smooth Skin' and read about the various approaches, techniques, etc. you might use to improve your skin's health. I discovered the flaxseed oil I have been taking for symtoms of menopause is exactly what I need for skin health but I should buy a variant that includes Borage or Evening Primrose oil.

Duke has many helpful suggestions including eating what he calls the Paleolithic diet consisting of many servings of vegetables and fruits and fewer servings of meats, cheeses and other dairy items (I'm not eating grubs--nor does he recomend them). And, yes you've probably read about this diet--it's the official USDA recommended diet--but Duke's value-added information is the list of ingredient he pinpoints for health. He explains why prunes, plums and other dark fruit are good for you, and why beans other than soy beans make a difference. To begin your older years (50+) in good health, I recommend you read Dr. Duke's book and practice what he preaches.
