Book Description

This reprint of the third book in Nichols's Allways trilogy contains a new foreword by Bryan Connon, Beverley Nichols's biographer. Set in the English countryside, the hilarious memoir is as much about the author's love for plants as it is about the village in which he lived. The depictions of flowers and ornamentals — "A single one of those gloxinias would be an event in Allways ... I should give a party for it" — are both inspiring and unforgettable. This is the voice of one whose chief endowment is an appreciation for plants and the landscape, including a keen understanding of the importance gardens play in an increasingly modern world.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars VILLAGE IN A VALLEY.......2007-03-13

I was a bit disappointed in this book - Beverley seems to have not been as interested in his subject as he was in the other 2 books of this trilogy, and he became quite morbid in the last section. Perhaps he was in a hurry to get the book finished, or wasn't well at the time.

Book Description

In this pioneering book Daniel Usner examines the economic and cultural interactions among the Indians, Europeans, and African slaves of colonial Louisiana, including the province of West Florida. Rather than focusing on a single cultural group or on a particular economic activity, this study traces the complex social linkages among Indian villages, colonial plantations, hunting camps, military outposts, and port towns across a large region of pre-cotton South.

Usner begins by providing a chronological overview of events from French settlement of the area in 1699 to Spanish acquisition of West Florida after the Revolution. He then shows how early confrontations and transactions shaped the formation of Louisiana into a distinct colonial region with a social system based on mutual needs of subsistence. Usner's focus on commerce allows him to illuminate the motives in the contest for empire among the French, English, and Spanish, as well as to trace the personal networks of communication and exchange that existed among the territory's inhabitants. By revealing the economic and social world of early Louisianians, he lays the groundwork for a better understanding of later Southern society.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Study of a Neglected Subject.......2000-09-01

Usner's Indians, Settlers and Slaves is a highly readable and path-breaking study of economic interactions in southern Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama before the formation of the 'Old South.' Here is a world of great social complexity, and surprising equality, featuring the Upper Mississippi Valley in a time of low settlement density. A must for anyone trying to understand the long-term settlement dynamic of the South.

1 out of 5 stars Way too long!.......2000-02-15

Welcome to the incredibly boring world of the Mississippi Valley. If you have to read this book, the last paragraph of each chapter will sum everything up for you. There is also a ten page summary at the end of the book! So if this is required reading, don't sweat it. You can get everything you need out of this book in ten minutes! Please don't waste your time reading the entire book.

    Book Description

"The level of insight and reconstruction possible at Cerén is almost unparalleled in archaeology, certainly in the New World.... It's a remarkable story."

—Paul Healy, Professor of Anthropology, Trent University

On an August evening around AD 600, residents of the Cerén village in the Zapotitán Valley of what is now El Salvador were sitting down to their nightly meal when ground tremors and loud steam emissions warned of an impending volcanic eruption. The villagers fled, leaving their town to be buried under five meters of volcanic ash and forgotten until a bulldozer uncovered evidence of the extraordinarily preserved town in 1976. The most intact Precolumbian village in Latin America, Cerén has been called the "Pompeii of the New World."

This book and its accompanying CD-ROM and website (ceren.colorado.edu) present complete and detailed reports of the excavations carried out at Cerén since 1978 by a multidisciplinary team of archaeologists, ethnographers, volcanologists, geophysicists, botanists, conservators, and others. The book is divided into sections that discuss the physical environment and resources, household structures and economy, special buildings and their uses, artifact analysis, and topical and theoretical issues.

As the authors present and analyze Cerén's houses and their goods, workshops, civic and religious buildings, kitchen gardens, planted fields, and garbage dumps, a new and much clearer picture of how commoners lived during the Maya Classic Period emerges. These findings constitute landmark contributions to the anthropology and archaeology of Central America.

      Book Description

Discovered in 1976 by Sheets, and under continuous excavation and study since, the spectacular Ceren site provides us with an unusually clear window into the ancient past with which to view family activities on the frontier of the Mayan civilization. Since volcanic ash did not allow people to selectively remove artifacts, the site is well-preserved and it also largely stopped natural processes of decomposition offering this rare opportunity to study the Mayan past through household archaeology. Known as the New World Pompeii, this study provides a detailed portrait of the life, houses, artifacts, and activity areas of the people who supported the elites with labor, food and goods. As Sheets says, "With any civilization that's being studied, if the households of commoners aren't being investigated, you've eliminated the bulk of the population. How can you understand the society if you ignore most of the people? It's like an ethnography. Only we can't interview people, so their possessions have to speak for them." Art and images from the author's own collection help illuminate the discussions and bring them to life, while the author's discussion of his personal trials and triumphs add a more human dimension to working in the field.

      Book Description

Usually associated with splendid Renaissance châ teaux and historical monuments, the Loire valley is in fact a place of even greater interest than the image of popular perception. The Loire River itself is the longest in France and passes through a succession of landscapes, many of them of a richness that proves this is truly "the garden of France." And there is variety too, reflected in the buildings and settings of the beautiful villages so stunningly illustrated in this book. Traveling west, James Bentley and Hugh Palmer take us first to the communities around Orléans, the villages of the Loiret and Cher départements. We then progress to the lands around Blois and Tours, where, it is said, the purest French is spoken. Here begin the villages with the great chateâ ux, such as Chambord, Cheverny, and Azay-le-Rideau, reached by long roads lined with poplars or lying beside the banks of one of the many tributaries of the Loire. The slopes here are frequently vine-clad, producing the delicious white wines that make such a fine accompaniment to the traditional fish cuisine of the region. And finally we arrive at the villages around Angers and Nantes where willow-lined rivers divide a landscape of quiet opulence, and green fields alternate with market gardens growing vegetables, flowers, and fruit. Over thirty villages of the Loire valley are described and beautifully photographed in this book, which is completed by special sections on wine and food and abbeys and churches. As with all the volumes in The Most Beautiful Villages series, there are appendices listing the most important sites, markets, hotels, and restaurants. 275 color illustrations.

        Book Description

Archaeological excavations at the Garoga, Klock and Smith-Pagerie Sites in the mid-Mohawk River Valley, New York are presented in this new volume published by the New York State Museum. These three sixteenth-century Mohawk sites were excavated by State Museum researchers under the direction of the late State Archaeologist Robert E. Funk. Each site was a large Mohawk Iroquois village complete with longhouses, palisades, and once occupied by hundreds of people. The extensive excavations revealed the settlement plan of each village, exposed dozens of fire hearths, storage pits, and other features, and recovered thousands of artifacts. This volume presents the results of these excavations including a description and analysis of the settlement patterns at each site and a detailed study and comparison of the large artifact assemblages.

Published posthumously, this monograph represents the culmination of Robert E. Funk's long involvement with Iroquois archaeology. Dr. Funk's excavations, research, and publications helped establish our current understanding of Mohawk lifeways during the sixteenth century, the period just prior to Iroquois contact with European fur traders and colonists. His significant contributions are memorialized in this final report.

Although the book is written as a scholarly text for the professional, it will also be of interest to anyone with a fascination for the Iroquois or Iroquois archaeology.

While these sort of books offer lovely, crisp photographs, they contain very few ideas that are realistic when you're on a tight budget...or if you have children and safety is a concern. This book in particular didn't take safety or budget into concern from my perspective.

The objects themselves aren't important when it comes to your personal style, so focus on placement and use of space rather than whether or not you like that particular cabinet or couch and you'll do great. For example, if country is your style--when you find a room layout that you like, just replace the leather mid-century sofa with a fluffy, cotton duck one instead. IKEA has really warmed up their styles lately so I'm sure you'll find something that works for you when browsing their catalogs and website.

I've kept several of the last few IKEA catalogs at a cost of ZERO dollars for color schemes, hints on how to use light and texture, fun with fabrics and furniture arrangement with oodles of storage. Hold onto them because they run out fast.

If you are designing with practicality and comfort in mind but aren't near an IKEA store, I urge you to visit the IKEA website and browse their interactive catalog for hints..then print up a page that inspires you. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Good resource for Interior Designers and aficionados.......2006-03-22

Beautiful, funky and cutting edge interiors. High quality paper. Great reference because it also includes floor plans and elevations. Super cool and a great bargain for such a beautiful book.

2 out of 5 stars A nice little fantasy trip.......2006-03-20

This is a wonderful book to read if you want to imagine yourself living somewhere exotic in an uncluttered space with minimal (or no) possessions.

It's all about design and I'm sure design mavens and architect-groupies will love it.

I picked it up looking for "good ideas" (as advertised in the title) I could use in, or adapt for, my small condo. In my real life as a middle-class working person living in the US. I found none.

Pretty pictures, though, of some inventive solutions to putting bed, bath, kitchen, and sitting facilities into small areas.

                  5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!.......2006-03-20

Of all of the design and architecture books in my library, I have to confess that this is the only one that I have ever read cover to cover. This wonderful book contains 51 gorgeously photographed small living spaces from 150-968 square feet - each one a jewel box of contemporary minimalist design. Here the art of living has been reduced to the basic essentials of ample light, beautiful design, clever storage, and minimal possessions. Each project is sparingly and simply described, with architectural drawings included in most sections. What a joy it is to be immersed in this book, imagining myself as a sophisticated debutante living in the chic apartment in Shepherd's Bush London, or a modern day hermit communing with the Divine in the Itamar Cave in Jerusalem, or an expatriate writer on a long, but fruitful sabbatical at Darmos House in Spain. Ah the joy of the simple life - unfettered by the weight of too many dusty possessions or heavy ornamentation - pure bliss!

                      Book Description

Outdoor Spaces is a unique collection of innovative, alfresco designs that integrate human habitats seamlessly into their surrounding environment. The use of natural light, filtered into the interior spaces of the residence, is just one example of how contemporary architects and landscape designers attempt to reestablish a connection with the outdoors. Using state of the art design and materials, these terraces, balconies, gardens, and courtyards embody the merging of luxurious living spaces with a more respectable attitude toward nature. Whether the view is a secluded, sandy beach or a metropolitan skyline, these spaces function as stylish yet relaxing leisure areas.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Inspiration .......2005-11-09

This is a great source for minimalist/urban kitchen inspiration. It is solely a picture book. I was a little disappointed when I went to the websites listed in the manufacturer directory. All are located in Europe and didn't appear to have much in the way of sourcing in the US.
