Ready to weave more twill.......2007-01-24
This book is clearly written, has great pictures - I can't wait to warp up a new twill project.
Wish I bought this years ago!.......2007-01-15
I've been weaving on and off for more than 12 years, without really getting "caught" by weaving fever. Until I got this book. Now I really understand so much more than I did before and have been weaving regularly. It is well written with great illustrations and pictures. There is enough information here that you could weave nothing but twills and be busy for years. It gave me a whole new appreciation of twills, rather than thinking it was pretty much a "starter" weave pattern. I would recommend this book to every weaver I know.
Gorgeous book.......2006-07-19
There are lots of beautiful things to make and good explanations of twill from simple to complex ones. (Full disclosure) I haven't had a chance to actually weave any of them yet. My fingers are itching to get those threads on the loom, but more urgent matters pull me away.
Book Description
This charming and rewarding collection of beautiful paintings celebrates the centuries-old iconography of women engaged in needlework, an activity that has always united women from all countries and in all stations of life, whether taken up for practical or artistic purposes. Artists as long ago as the Middle Ages sought to capture the needle-worker's quiet concentration and domestic milieu, to convey the social and cultural connotations of this largely female domain, and its symbolic resonance. Many of the loveliest of these paintings are depicted, including works by Vermeer, Chardin, Velasquez and Dalí, by the Pre-Raphaelite school and by the Impressionists, in particular the works of such women artists as Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot.

Birthday hit! .......2007-09-08
I gave this to a needlewoman friend who was delighted - had never seen the book and was thrilled.
Not for the specialist.......2007-03-16
While this book includes some delightful examples of paintings which include people practising various needle arts the lack of any criterion of organization by period, type of needleart or even name of artist, together with sometimes not well informed commentary makes this more of a charming 'keepsake' gift book rather than a significant study. While the author has turned up some less well known examples other interesting works relevant to such a collection do not appear.
In Praise of the Needlewoman.......2007-01-15
This book is a beautiful way to associate art throghout the ages with our needlepoint of today. It is so interesting to find paintings that you have seen and then look at them again by being shown a person sitting and stitching. You can actually see and feel her joy in her work and the feeling of accomplishment it is bringing to her. Wonderfully done and researched. And since Gail Sirna is a designer and teacher of needlework, she brings authority and true feeling into this interesting book which is a "feast for the eyes".
mostly for 19th century enthusiasts.......2006-11-27
Beautiful clear reproductions of paintings and descriptions of needlework in relation to social history of the period. Even so I am quite disappointed in the book because my interest is in earlier periods and the book descriptions are slightly misleading. I ordered it because the book jacket says "spans more than five centuries" and "from the sixteenth century onwards," and a description on this page mentions medieval. However, the earliest painting is from 1595 (d'Estrees sisters in the Louvre) and the needlewoman therein is part of the background, not the main painting. That is the *ONLY* 16th century painting and there are only 6 from the 17th century.
The others are all later: 5 from the 18th century (2 of those from the 1790s); 21 from the 20th century; rest are all 19th century. This is a visually lovely book but if you want a balanced continuum of the needlewoman across "more than five centuries," this isn't it. If you're looking for needlewomen in the 19th century, you'll enjoy it.
Lovely full-page color photos are accompanied by insights into the painter, his subject, and the world of needlework........2006-11-07
In Praise of the Needlewoman: Embroiderers, Knitters, Lacemakers, and Weavers in Art could've been featured in our Arts section but is reviewed here for its special interest to any involved in the needlework arts. Works by old to modern masters depict the needlewoman's artistic pursuits, and come from such famous names as Vermeer, Chardin, and Dali. This celebrates the theme, analyzing the surveying the fine art of women's work through some of the best needlework classics of the art world. Lovely full-page color photos are accompanied by insights into the painter, his subject, and the world of needlework.

Not for beginners or owners of 4 shaft looms.......2007-01-05
Although the ideas look really neat, there are not many uses for someone with a 4 shaft loom (like me). More stuff for 8 shaft owners. I think some of the ideas could be adapted, if one were an experienced weaver. Certainly doubleweave is a technique that some might like to attempt, but this is not the book to start with.
Book Description
This must-have draft book contains almost 1000 different patterns on more than 25 weave structures. Introductory chapters provide a thorough understanding of how each structure works.

This is a very good compilation of 8-Shaft patterns from Handwoven magazine.
A helpful resource.......2001-09-21
This is an excellent book! The patterns are beautiful, and the instructions are easy to read. I have made many nice projects from this book.
A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns: From the Friends of Ha.......2000-08-09
This is the modern 8-shaft weaver's most treasured pattern resource! The 25 chapters are titled according to weave structure, and each begins with a thorough explaination of that structure and it's method of drafting notation. Black and white photos and drafts follow.
There are 765 patterns and samples from which to choose! As useful as a reference for 8-shaft weavers as Davison's Handweaver's Pattern Book is for those who use 4-shaft looms.

A must read for those even thinking of adopting a toddler.......2007-10-08
I found this to be a great book. It really opened my eyes to what a toddler adoption could be like. I highly recommend it.
Toddler Adoption: The Weaver's Craft.......2007-08-27
Excellent condition, received on time. I adopted five months ago and not only did it prepare me for adoption issues, I refer back to it almost weekly! Thank you!
This is a Must Read!.......2007-08-15
This book was one of our most important resources in deciding whether to adopt a toddler or preschooler (we did) and whether we were up to the task. True, not all adopted toddlers will have the issues described in the book, but a great many will have SOME of these issues. It is so much better to be preared for the worst and hope for the best, then to be blindsided by issues you have no understanding of. The author spoke with real families and this book is based on real experiences. I can not recommend this book highly enough!

Don't let this scare you away.......2007-03-22
Being the mom of a son who was adopted as a toddler I can tell you that not all toddlers adopted at this age have such incredible attachment problems, emotional outbursts, etc. I personally believe this book had led to many toddlers not being adopted. This is not to say that problems can exist, but attachment problems occur in babies as well. For those parents who are looking for answers on how to deal with a toddler with attachment issues this might be the book that will help you. If you are a prospective parent of a toddler, realize that there are many, many children adopted as toddlers who come home without the severe problems this book focuses on.
very helpful!.......2007-02-13
this is probably the most realistic and in-depth book i've read on the topic yet! a great compliment or follow-up to MAPP or GPS class.
