Will Be Reprinted.......2007-06-13
I wrote Simon & Shuster, yes this is going to be reprinted. Here is what I received June 12, 2007 "Yes, there will be reprint coming out 10-1-09, ISBN# 1416535179 for $45.00 in hard cover.....Alishia Nix,Customer Service
Simon & Schuster ,Domestic / Canada".........so save some money! It's well worth the $45, I wouldn't pay $200+ though....
It's being reprinted in 2008.......2007-03-08
Check the knittersreview forum before you plunk down an absurd amount of money for this book. The book is on the reprint list for 2008.
If you can't wait that long, take a look at the Mary Thomas knitting books. Those are in print and are better in my opinion.
Let's get this book republished.......2006-10-12
This is by far the best and most comprehensive knitting reference book I have ever seen. I checked it out from the library and instantly succumbed to book envy. Unfortunately, reference books need to be on hand so you can....refer to them. If I had an extra $200+ I would buy it in a minute. Alas, I am not burdened with surplus dollars at the moment. If we all call Simon & Schuster and request that they republish it..... Maybe they will..... They can be reached at www.simonsays.com or 1-800-223-2336. Ask all your knitting friends to call too. Thanks and Happy Knitting!
Petition the Publishers.......2006-10-02
Does anyone know whether this book will really and truly be re-issued?
I would dearly love to have a copy but cannot purchase it at the going auction prices. Maybe we could petition the publishers to reprint it.
This is my knitting bible.......2006-09-27
I'm an on again-off again knitter. I haven't been really into knitting for about 10 years but last year I really got into it again. Well somewhere along the line I bought this book, and boy am I glad I did. This book is my knitting "bible". I KNOW I can master anything about knitting if this book is resting on my knees. You knitters know what I mean. It would be nice for a reissue. Some of the terminology is dated. For instance, if you would be looking for a provisional cast on it wouldn't be in this book. Maybe by another name or something you would be able to find it. You have to look at the diagrams..
I didn't know this book is going for such a high price. I thought I'd look it up and boy was I surprised. But sorry boys and girls I'm holding on to my copy because it is truly a treasure

Book Description
Finishing Techniques for Hand Knitters presents expert tips and tried-and-tested shortcuts for beautifully finished hand-knits.
Expert tips and tried-and-tested shortcuts for beautifully finished hand-knits.
An otherwise finely crafted piece of hand-knitting can often be spoiled by the finishing details. Now you can learn the shortcuts—and even more important, where not to cut corners. Starting with reading patterns and instructions, this invaluable guide then explains the different ways of casting on and off and the importance of shaping and sizing. It shows how to sew a variety of seams, provides methods for each type of stitch, and explains how to create perfect buttonholes, button bands, and necklines. Finally, a section on decorative detail shows how to add beads and other embellishments, while the trouble-shooting pages tackle those annoying problems that occur when things have gone wrong. An invaluable companion for beginners and more experienced knitters.

Very helpful for beginners.......2007-08-30
I have had some experience with knitting, but not too much. This book is great if you want to add a professional touch to your garments. The chapters about assembly and altering are just great. The patterns are few and very basic indeed, but that's the point with books for beginners, isn't it?
Disappointing.......2007-07-18
Pattern lacking in schematic, difficulty level, clarity of abbreviations. There have to be better books out there than this. Slick look but lacking in completeness.
Disappointing.......2007-04-19
I was trying to decide between this book and "The Knitters Book of Finishing Techniques" by Nancy Wiseman and I chose this book because (there were no reviews when I bought it) I was sucked in by the glossy cover. Similar to other reviewers I found this book high on glossy pictures and short on actual information. It's almost borders on a being a coffee table book.
I'm ordering the Nancy Wiseman book today.
Pretty Pictures, Not Enough Information.......2007-03-05
I found this book to be annoyingly simplistic. The illustrations - full color photographs - are nice enough but the text leaves a lot to be desired.
For example, the book gives three steps for sewing in a zipper, which might be enough if they told you whether to use thread or yarn for the backstitching into place (the picture seems to show them using yarn but it's not really clear), whether or not to remove the backstitching (the picture of the finished garment appears to show the (rather sloppy)backstitching still in place. The third step is to slip stitch the edge of the zipper into place...again, no mention of whether to use the yarn or matching thread, though it would appear to be embroidery floss.
Kitchenering is shown briefly (and not explained very well) but is called "Grafting by Sewing," so a newcomer to knitting wouldn't know what to look for in this book when confronted with the term "Kitchener" in a pattern and, alternatively, when faced with the term "Kitchener" in a pattern wouldn't know that this was the method they might have seen in this book called "Grafting by Sewing."
I'm sure there are better books on finishing techniques than this one.
Not for the advance knitter.......2007-02-21
I had high hopes for Finishing Techniques, I've been looking for a book that really explains all those important little details. Unfortunately this one wasn't it. The book seems rushed, glossing over some techniques (one paragraph for lining a jacket?), and covering others that are easily found online or in VK Quick Reference (k2tog,cable cast on etc).
With the clear knitting pictures (some could be more up close or have the background cleaned up),I think this would make a nice reference guide for a beginner (though I still suggest VK Ultimate Knitting Book)with a few patterns in the back. Short rowing and picking up stitches are easily explained and demystified.

Our community of knitters share ways to cope with the wide variety of problems encountered in the pursuit of finished products from our needles and hooks. Found it to be an excellent resource and enjoyed reading how resourceful fellow knitters can be.
Knitting Tips and Trade Secrets.......2007-05-15
Lots of helpful ideas and new twists on things you already know. Even though my knitting friends consider me an expert knitter, I will be getting ideas from this book for quite awhile!
Tips even very experienced knitters never knew.......2007-02-16
I have been knitting for over 40 years. This book is full of very useful tips that I never heard of before. Well written, clear instructions and illustrations. Every knitter should have a copy of this book.
a lot of good advice and tips.......2006-12-29
I found this book to be very helpful. It's basically a bunch of little tips and techniques gathered from a bunch of knitters all over the US and Canada. Many of the tidbits I was willing to just pass by, and a some were rather confusing, but I've also gained a lot of good information from some of them, including an easier way to rip back and some tips on multicolor knitting. This book is definitely worth looking at.

Beginning Knitters and Those Adroit with Their Hands.......2006-10-25
This jewel should be cast, page by page, in transparent laminate to preserve for lifetimes. I've had this book since it was published, having re-learned from other books how to purl and knit and sort of remembered from watching German mom how to hold needles in hands with some elegance. This book has taught me how to KNIT SOCKS (galore), how to make edges look finished instead of ragged, knitting with either beads or sequins, several varieties of button holes,full-figure sizing and knitting, and now,15 years later, how to make not only fingered gloves(!!) but even thumb-no-fingers hand warmers that are all the rage today (2006)! I was so disappointed when Threads magazine went to all-sewing instead of both arts; it had been the BEST magazine for non-kitschy knitters! The illustrations in this collection of articles from their 1980s issues are large, clear, and easily scanned into computer for emailing to friends to show them how to give you their leg and foot measurements for socks, for example. Nothing skimpy, here! My Tibetan Buddhist teacher would say this book "essentializes" knitting knowledge, which is another way of saying it's a "diamond path" to knitting; cuts through all the mysterious stuff and gets right to the nuts and bolts of the good stuff you can do that is grown-up and good-looking. There is no other book like this on the market that I've been able to find. Enjoy!
A wonderful treasure trove of knitting knowlege!.......2002-04-09
This book is the first in a series of reprints from Threads magazine of their knitting articles, and to my mind the best and most useful for one's knitting library. If you are beginning to explore the world of seamless sweaters, this is an especially good book, as they have articles on bottom up seamless (by Elizabeth Zimmerman, no less) and top down raglans, as well as an article on converting flat patterns to circular knitting. Even if one is not particularly interested in the subject of an article, I find that the excellent text, color photograhs and diagrams serve to draw me into it. For example an article on gloves by Deborah Newton is so attractively and accessibly done, that I'm tempted to try it someday! Also "The Oddball Sweater" a seamless sweater worked from the top down with yarn leftovers is another project I'd like to try.
There are also articles on finishing, ribbing and fitting, of interest to all knitters, and a subject index to help one access all this useful information!
Reprinted from Threads, a good idea.......2001-02-16
Threads Magazine, a premier sewing magazine, used to print fine articles about knitting. Then in the early 90's they decided to go "all-sewing, all the time" and not publish articles on knitting. Meanwhile, they had a large collection of very excellent articles written with their signature hand drawn illustrations. Fortunately, Taunton Press, publisher of Threads has seen fit to reprint these articles in several books.
This book has the article on bead knitting, which has been responsible for getting MANY people addicted to this unusual form of knitting (and a vintage art, at that.) The article on fitting larger people is a classic, and relies on the Threads know-how on fitting. Some of the fashions now look a bit 80's, but even so, this is an excellent reference and well worth adding to the knitting library.
Everything you need in one place.......2000-08-31
I've been knitting for more than thirty years, and I still found plenty new to learn from this book. Anyone who's knit for a while knows that you'll often find a cast-on technique you like or a trick for making buttonholes or a timesaving tip in a magazine or book. Unfortunately, when you want to use the trick, you have no idea where it was. FINALLY, all of those tips and tricks are in one place! You'll definitely want to keep this in the bag with your current knitting project.
A definite keeper for any knitter.......1999-08-01
I would recommend this book to anyone who knows how to knit. It includes techniques for every part part of handknitting, from cast ons to bind offs and everything in between, as well as tricks for a sweaters and mittens. Definite keeper, my copy is frayed and well loved.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
This handbook for the reading of early Greek poetry is intended to be both a manual for teachers and a guide for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. It covers poetry in the elegiac and iambic genres, as well as melic poetry which is provisionally divided into the personal and the public. The book takes a critical look at scholarly trends applied in interpreting this poetry, exploring, for example, the problems of defining the nature of the elegiac genre, the origins of iambic poetry, the personal voice used by the poets, and the validity of historical criticism. Appearing in the Classical Tradition series, it considers the impact of modern literary theory on the reading of these texts - for instance the new interpretations suggested by feminism - and guides readers to a full bibliography on scholarly debates from the 19th century to the present.
