Landscape Lighting 101.......2006-04-17
The Landscape Lighting book, by Janet Moyer, provides both an academic and practical level of landscaping lighting knowledge. Another good book, if you can find it, is the Ortho's book of How to Design and Install Outdoor Lighting.
In comparison, the Ortho book has more colorful pictures and offers a very colorful education - I'd say, more or less at a good high school level. If you want more of college level introduction to landscape lighting - perhaps, to start a business or to broaden your knowledge, The Landscape Lighting book is the book for you.
The Art and Craft of Landscape Lighting.......2006-03-08
The second edition of Janet Lennox Moyer's THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is an absolute necessity for everybody who works in landscape lighting or who is seriously interested in creating their own garden lighting. Ms Moyer has greatly revised and expanded the color plates and Chapter 4, "The Design Process - Documenting and Installing Landscape Lighting" as well as writing an entirely new Chapter 5 "Follow-up Work - Record Documents and Project Maintenance." These changes and additions and the many other updates make the new edition well worth the purchase price.
First published in 1992, THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK has served as the single and indispensable reference for the landscape lighting industry. It has offered all new landscape lighting practitioners guidance and provided an emerging industry the foundation necessary on which to build solid practice. While there is a wealth of other books that offer how-to help and publish pretty pictures, none of them even attempt to define and explain professional practice for the landscape lighting industry with Ms Moyer's authority and confidence.
THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is not an easy book to read but it is well worth the effort. Once you understand the theory behind the short cuts and rules-of-thumb that other how to books offer, you are free to create your own. With the freedom you gain when you understand and can apply those fundamental principals and concepts to your landscape lighting, you become like the cook who ignores the printed recipe and creates a masterpiece of culinary art.
expert opinion.......2000-07-13
Still the best book for the professional. Invaluable resource for architects, landscape architects and landscape lighting designers. Broad and deep with plenty of technical information. I purchased this book in 1992 and I bought it again today (an electrician friend "lost" my original copy). A second edition (if planned) should include better information about transformer regulation (the ability of a low voltage lighting transformer to maintain 12v under load) and voltage drop (the dreaded decrease in voltage through the main supply cable) which are presented as formulae rather than actual measurements. Great photographs mostly of large scale projects. This book should be in every outdoor lighting designer's library.
There is a second edition (Wiley 2005) of the book revised and updated by the author to reflect changes and improvements in techniques and equipment. The second edition is easily recognized by the illustrated four color cover; the original had an illustrated dust cover (missing from the last run of the first edition) by the cover itself was plain black.
I have both editions and consider them a bargain in terms of concentrated relevant information.

Rankin Redux.......2002-07-17
This is exactly the same book as "Creative Lighting for Outdoor Living"; only the title has been changed. There is something vaguely suspicious about re-titling the same text and illustrations to lure the unwary into a second purchase. That said, my earlier review stands but my opinion of Lark Books has taken a fall.
Book Description
Homeowners, garden designers, landscape professionals, and anyone with an interest in highlighting and improving the look of their home landscape will be inspired to learn how even the most drab setting can be transformed into a stunning showcase garden using simple, modern, and creative lighting schemes. Revealed in these pages are the secrets behind a wide range of lighting styles. Separate chapters cover topics such as different effects of lighting varieties available-using complementary indoor and outdoor lighting, planning for safety, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Useless Book.......2006-09-16
This is purely a picture book and the photographs are mostly bad. The whole point of photographing garden lighting is to capture the look of the lighting at twilight. When the photographs are taken too early the lighting has no impact; when taken too late the contrast levels result in hot spots of lighting that do not in any way replicate what is seen by the eye in that particular after-dark setting. The text merely gushes about what you are looking at but seldom provides any useful information about how the effects were achieved. There are a number of books about garden lighting that are better photographed and contain details about how the lighting effects were achieved. I have reviewed all of the books on outdoor lighting that were or are still available. If what is being sought is a well illustrated primer on lighting effects in a garden setting one will not find it here.
Book Description
Design and build a garden-lighting system yourself. Learn about lighting techniques, materials and fixtures, design principles, and installation methods. Numerous photographs help you plan the look you want.

Great value but seriously dated. Outdoor lighting has gone through a revolution since 1984. The market is now filled to bursting with manufacturer's innovations including the adoption of low voltage halogen lamps (particularly the MR-16) in place of the old automotive-type 12v lamps. Still a good overview of both 120v and 12v systems and the price can't be beat. I've given dozens of copies away to clients over the years. Deserves an update. Ortho, are you listening?
How to design and install outdoor lighting........2000-04-13
This book was marvelous! It gave me some great ideas on how to save time and money. I have always wanted to try and install a unique lighting arrangement at the front and the back of my home, but I was very leery about the expense I would incur and the knowledge to "go ahead and try that, any way". I truly think this book is worth every dollar. You will not be disappointed......

expert opinion.......2002-07-17
At last, an up-to-date replacement for Ortho's 1984 "How to Design & Install Outdoor Lighting". This is a thorough overview of lighting techniques, system design and the variety of lamps and lampholders used in both line voltage and low voltage outdoor lighting. Despite the usual disclaimers (the Brits must be as litigious as Americans) about having only a qualified electrician install garden lighting there is useful information for the DIYer.
This is not an installer's manual but it does provide sufficient information to enable one to grasp the essentials of lighting design's dependence on the proper lamp type as the key to success. After all, lighting fixtures are just lamp holders and the effect is in the lamp not in the fixture. Many well-photographed illustrations of lighting techniques are provided with explanatory captions and backed up with colored drawings to reveal detail. I was surprised to see charts of lamp types drawn out-of-scale but there were accompanying photographs to put them back in perspective. Credits were in source order so it is difficult to track a photo to its source i.e. if you want to know who was responsible for a photo on page 107 you have to scan the entire acknowledgements section. No equipment credits are given although some of the photos look like catalog pix and the experienced eye will detect products not currently available in the US. The book cover shown above is not the cover on the book I received which shows a rather pedestrian garden walkway with pagoda (!) lights and a faucet and coiled garden hose instead of the sumptuous Japonisme entry.
Book Description
Vast decorative possibilities spring from each of these pages, presenting everything from traditional white and rainbow strings to large gleaming, flickering orbs. Brighten display shelves; bring the garden in with a star-kissed bower of glimmering plants; give a young girl a princess canopy over her bed; or go through the year with seasonal and holiday sensations.

Customer Reviews:
If you live in a...........2003-01-25
If you live in a 5 million dollar house, this is the book for you. If you have a 3000 sq foot cape cod, forget it. I purchased this book to learn how to light MY house. I don't have a 60 foot indoor pool, or a mountain top view of downtown LA. This book was of no use to me at all. I give it 2 stars because it has nice photos, of houses most of us will never see in person.
Great gallery of artistic lighting & designer sourcebook.......2002-04-29
This book is filled with examples from around the world of magnificent homes that are enhanced by stunning outdoor lighting effects. It is as much a gallery of artistic lighting as it is a sourcebook for the designer or homeowner looking for ways to make their home stand out.
The book is broken into sections with a brief overview of each before the many photographic examples. These include transforming a home after dark with dramatic lighting effects, creating a moon lighting effect and my favorite section on lighting pools and fountains with some really fabulous designs. There are also sections on outdoor rooms, landscape lighting and some wonderful ideas on using the view in through a window as part of the exterior design and lighting plan.
Full color, full-page photos fill most of the book. Brief descriptions are provided in captions along with designer and photographer credits. There is contact information for these designers and photographers along with some lighting manufacturers in the back of the book. This is a design book, not a technical manual. Each caption tells the type of fixtures used but there is no information on wiring or installation.
A very useful chapter on common lighting mistakes along with frequently asked questions and a glossary conclude the book. Although most of the examples in this book are of homes well beyond average means, many of the ideas and principles presented can be adapted to enhance almost any dwelling. I found it quite inspirational and enjoyable.
expert opinion.......2000-07-13
Wonderful photographs but otherwise a bit thin. This is a picture book mostly of California projects with some colder climate installations so these lush landscapes can only be envied by homeowners and gardeners outside the semi-tropics. DIYers will find this particular meal consists more of dessert than substantial fare. The clear intention of this book is as a feast for the eye and the few pages of technical information consist of an overview of techniques, common mistakes (with which I heartily concur), Q & A and a glossary. There is a helpful list of lighting designers (the first I've seen) limited mostly to the West Coast. There are plenty of good ideas here and most of the photograph captions contain a brief but useful description of how the lighting effects were achieved.
This is a very good book for my new house.......2000-04-10
Simple... this book is extremely useful to me. You know I broguth a new house and it help me alot of design stuff... it saved us alot of design fee... worth to buy this boolk. Go ahead.
