Weeds in My Garden: Observations on Some Misunderstood Plants
ASIN: 0881926574 |
Book Description
Now for the first time in English, one of the world's best-loved garden writers explores the connections between the life of the garden and the life of the mind. In this omnibus volume that ranges from discussing why gardeners should grow bad-smelling plants to how readers should eat their flowers, Jürgen Dahl identifies curiosity and patience as the gardener's chief virtues. What matters most to Jürgen Dahl is that a garden is not a sterile copy of a picture in a book, or a beautiful "triumph" that lacks all experimentation and wonder. In Jürgen Dahl's garden, things do not "work," but instead they happen --- or maybe they do not. Many things that please, surprise, or disappoint a gardener do so because the garden's living creatures can only rarely be tricked into obeying the gardener's will; in their own quiet but unyielding way, they follow their own laws. Jürgen Dahl's stories are wise and cheerful, and full of opinions and premonitions, all told with the insatiable curiosity of the true explorer.
Customer Reviews:
All good things take time.......2006-08-28
A good book takes time to read and progresses in a slow and orderly fashion, much like the garden itself. Such is the case with The Curious Garden by Jürgen Dahl
The Curious Garden is a collection of Dahl's previous 3 books, much of which were originally created as weekly gardening columns. The 3 books include How to Eat a Lily (1995), The Stinking Garden (1997) and The Curious Gardener (1998). Each book is divided into easy-to-read sections, probably due to their origin as columns.
According to my library record, I have renewed this book twice, each time for 3 weeks and it is rapidly approaching time to renew it again. This means a total of 6-7 weeks to read one book. How could it possibly take so long to work through 250 pages? The fact is, this book was perfect for dipping into whenever I needed a change of pace. Its short section invited a few moments spent in the joys of gardening before returning to more mundane work. It was a gentle friend in the evenings when no more thoughts of computers or email or web pages could be processed.
It seems to happen more frequently than I would like, but I often find myself wanting to meet authors who have already passed from this world. From his writing, Dahl would have been an interesting gardening pen pal. It would have been a joy to read his columns as they were created, rather than in this final collection of his best. Still, I can enjoy the fact that his work was deemed important enough to collect and translate into English.
The Curious Gardener would be a great book for the reading chair and night stand as Fall approaches and quickly turns to Winter. You could lose yourself in the pages as snow flies and your own garden sleeps and wake with new ideas, new thoughts and a new garden come the Springtime.
A Great Entertainer.......2004-11-25
The Curious Gardener is most definitely a read from the beginning to the end. Reading this book is like reading a letter from a gardening friend or sitting down for tea with him. Dahl connects the garden with the mind by telling stories that will make you look deeper into the art of gardening.
Dahl ranges in discussions from why you should grow bad smelling plants to, how to eat a lily, making this book a truly enjoyable read. After finishing this book, you will look at your garden in a whole new light. It connects us back to some of the pleasures we sometimes miss in our rush to get things done.
From rambles and rants, to carful observations, this book is a delight to read on a rainy or cold wintery day.

Book Description
The ERG gives architects and others in the building industry a basis for comparing the environmental impact of building materials, products and systems. It provides a consistent format for assessing the environmental impacts of building materials from their original extraction and manufacture to their final disposal or reuse. The ERG was launched by the AIA in 1992 with funding from the EPA to create a simplified methodology for assessing the environmental impact of building materials, and as a vehicle for disseminating that information to the building community at large. The AIA Press has brought in Wiley as a publishing partner to improve its content, format, packaging and marketing.
Book Description
Covering five major areas of domestic design, International Design Yearbook 16 devotes separate chapters to furniture, lighting, tableware, textiles, and products created over the past 18 months by both well-known designers and new names from around the world. This year's selection has been made by internationally acclaimed architect and lighting designer Michele De Lucchi.
As fresh as the millennium itself, the annual presents futuristic technological ideas, such as Ron Arad's computer-animated vases, as well as reinventions of time-honored objects, like Sir Norman Foster's light design for Artemide. This who's who of domestic design includes the vibrant, modern talent of Emmanuel Babled, Jonathan Ives, and Ettore Sottsass, and design teams from Philips, Sharp, and Siemens. The objects are lavishly illustrated, and full technical data is given for each. A comprehensive reference section provides biographies of the designers, a list of suppliers and their addresses, and an updated list of design acquisitions at major international museums.

Customer Reviews:
An annual compendium of architecture and design information.......2001-05-21
An annual compendium of architecture and design information, articles, and facts, James Cramer's Almanac Of Architecture & Design 2001 offers rankings of the top Architecture and Design colleges; state-by-state registration laws; ratings and rankings of the leading firms; the Pritzker Prize and other major award speeches; the latest state and city "Salary and Compensation" survey results for designers; a comprehensive design competition calendar; the latest records, rankings, and achievement sin design; "need to know" facts on architecture and historic preservation; exhibition schedules for top museums of design; a locator for architecture bookshops; comprehensive and updated award histories, deadlines, and winners; recent obituaries of design leaders; student leaders on education and the profession's future; and an exclusive ranking of the "most visited" historic house museums. Almanac Of Architecture & Design 2001 is a core reference title for personal, professional, and academic reference collections.
A must for anyone interested in architecture.......2001-04-05
This book was recommended to me by an architecture student. While not an architect, I must say that this book is one of the most valuable architecture resources in my library. As someone who has always had an interest, this almanac has really allowed me to explore and enjoy my interest in architecture. This book has a lot of information that will be of interest to professional architects, but it goes well beyond that and has something for everyone. There is a lot here that you won't find anywhere else, and its as up-to-date as it gets. I will be adding a copy to my library every year. Highly recommended.
Informative and excellent quality.......2000-03-19
I bought this book and have not been able to put it down. It has more information packed into it than I had originally thought. The best sections I think are on liscensing laws in landscape architectue, architecture, and the 250 leading design firms in the U.S. I will make my own recommendations to the editors but this is one of the most informative sites that I have visited. The section on journals and magazines is especially helpful. I recommend regional magazines be included such as Architectue Minnesota and Texas Architect. Quality of the paper and print is outstanding. Thanks for this breakthrough book on architecture lists and rankings.
Useful and Interesting-.......2000-03-09
A good resource, for a number of reasons. The variety of information the editors provide, from hard building cost data to locations of architectural bookstores, makes this guide useful in many ways. Although the book bogs down in spots with lists that I will probably never use, most of the material is stuff I just KNOW I'll need to look up at some point (such as average architectural salaries, by level and state; that "some point" is when I change jobs again). In fact, I've already referred to it a couple times already, and the year 2000 is still young. Plus, the book enlightened me to the fact that Walter Gropius shares my birthday (how do you compile that knd of stuff? call his house?). Anyway, I can't possibly enmerate all the ways this book is useful. I can say its a pretty good one to have on the shelf.

Book Description
Overflowing with fresh creativity this exciting annual presents the best communication design produced in Europe at the end of the 20th century. 894 designers and 100 clients from eleven countries submitted over 2300 works from which a panel of jurists chose 27 award winners. Explaining the selection criteria one jurist said, "Good communication design initially appeals to the gut and then establishes itself in the intellect". Dutch agency Limage Dangereuse won the grand prize for their 'Father Business' website design. Other award categories include television and electronic media, product communications, advertising, culture and sport, publishing and multimedia.
