    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Very little Colorado specific information in this book.......2002-02-19

I was greatly surprised by the poor regional quality of this book's contents given John Cretti's reputation as an excellent and respected Colorado gardener. "Colorado Gardener's Guide" is essentially a generic compendium of plants that will grow in Zones 3 to 6. There is a brief (7-page) introduction that gives some common Colorado growing advice mixed in with general gardening advice. The only insight into why the author included certain plants in the book is, "The plants recommended in this book are good performers in many parts of Colorado." Many of the recommendations contradict the author's own advice. For example, under the entry for Poplar, the author warns against landscape trees that are weak-wooded and susceptible to storm damage. He then goes on to list the Goldenrain Tree as recommended despite noting that it is weak-wooded and susceptible to snowstorm damage. A number of plants included in the book are potentially invasive and are commonly listed in Colorado and other Western states as plants that responsible gardeners should try to avoid.
The recommended plants are divided into simple categories of annuals, perennials, groundcovers, lawns, etc. There are no further helpful subdivisions such as native, xeriscape, mountain compatible, etc. The reader must read the two page description for each plant to ferret out any such information. Although I did find one plug for drought-hardy plants, many of the plants recommended in this book for semi-arid Colorado require frequent watering. It would be more helpful to include at least some lists that indicate which plants will require extensive soil modification, protection from wind and sun, have high water requirements, etc. After all, this is supposed to be the COLORADO gardener's guide, not a general garden guide. Although the book is inexpensive, I would not add it to your garden library. I wouldn't have bought it if I had leafed through it first rather than buy it unseen, as I did. (I was swayed by the two previous reviews, reviews that now mystify me!) Unless you do not own a single other garden book, this book will give you very little new information, especially Colorado-specific planting information. A much better beginner gardening book for Colorado is "Month-To-Month Gardening, Colorado."

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know.......2000-07-13

This fabulous book lives up to its subtitle -- it truly does tell you what, where, when, how and why to garden in Colorado. It's written by a Colorado native, which is helpful to a "flatlander" like myself who is trying to garden in this challenging climate. This is by far the most helpful gardening book we've bought -- it outranks our Sunset western gardening book since it is written specifically for Colorado.

5 out of 5 stars John Cretti is a GARDEN GOD.......1999-04-28

John is the greatest. I'm not a gardener, but with this book, it takes the guess work out. I only have to buy one book. I know my garden this year won't be without envy.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I greatly enjoyed this book.......2005-01-16

In arid west, water is a scarce resource that has been taken for granted. This book provides many good ideas on how to have beautiful yard while using less water. One of the best parts of the book is the summary on different plants and their water requirements. Many in the west don't realize how much beauty they can bring into their landscapes by adding xeric natives such as penstemons, agastaches and the like.

One of the best guides to xeriscape plants to experiment with, I recommend this book to all western gardeners who would like to use less water and provide more cover and nectar for wildlife.

5 out of 5 stars Gardening WITH Nature (instead of against her).......2000-03-15

This book was written for those of us who live in the arid west, love to garden and desire an attractive landscape, but who are faced with an uncertain water supply. As water resources are becoming more expensive, and in some cases rationed, we all need to consider how to garden appropriately for the climate zone in which we live. This book begins with the rationale for water-wise gardening, takes the reader through an easy to understand planning and design phase, and finishes up with excellent photographs and plant descriptions. Xeriscaping is definitely the wave of the future, no matter where you live!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a must for all mountain gardeners........2001-06-13

The book is not a pretty picture book, but one full of valuable information about mountain gardening, which is much different from my California coast gardening. The technical descriptions of how, why and when to do certain chores and very detailed line drawings make this book the most useful one in my gardening library. The book contains sections on tools, plants, suggested layouts and much more. A novice can create a long lasting balanced beautiful garden after reading this book. At the same time I've learned much about all the plants for the harsher climates. A lesson in botany at the same time. Very nice job.

4 out of 5 stars A Veggie Book! (and more....).......2000-03-27

This second volume of Barbara Hyde's Gardening in the Mountain West series does for vegetable gardening what the first book did for landscaping in the mountain and intermountain areas of the west. A retired Boulder County, Colo., Cooperative Extension Agent, the author draws on degrees in horticulture and a lifetime love of gardening to guide the reader through what works--and what doesn't--in mountain gardens.

Vegetables, fruits, berries and herbs that do well in the mountain west are described in detail, along with specific variety recommendations. Insects and diseases common in this area also are discussed, along with chapters on weeds and co-existing with wildlife.

Hyde also adds some chapters on ornamentals, including bulbs, vines, roses, ornamental grasses, wildflowers, container gardening, indoor plants and attracting birds and butterflies to the garden.

This book is not the stuff of what dreams are made of--it's about the realities of gardening in high altitude areas where it's hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and dry most of the year. If you are new to the area, this book and the previous volume are essential if you want to garden in town or in the country.

Major disappointment. Probably a ton of good content. But the little stick drawings of plants, at best, and no drawings a lot, for most, is a real let down.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, She Really Does Understand What it's Like Here!.......2000-03-27

The author has spent her entire life in the mountain west, has degrees in horticulture and is a retired Colorado Cooperative Extension Service agent. She implemented the Master Gardener program in Boulder County, and she's one smart lady!

This book is a real compendium of ideas suitable for mountain and intermountain areas. She not only describes what works--and what doesn't--but tells the reader why. The first section includes chapters on landscape planning and design, followed by a section on cultural procedures. Want to plant a windbreak? She tells you how. Need to know how to prune a tree without destroying it? It's right here. And much, much more. Hyde mixes contemporary wisdom and knowledge with "old-timey" country skills in chapters on protecting plants from flood, frost, hail, heat, ice, lightning, vandalism, wind and Ol' Man Winter. Other sections focus on specific plants for the mountain west and the garden necessities, including tools.

I live on small acreage on a northern Idaho prairie. There are gardening books I've enjoyed more, but none that have helped me as much as this one.

        Book Description

This authoritative guide showcases the unmatched beauty and diversity of the native orchids of the southern Appalachian mountains. Based on Stanley Bentley's many years of nature study, it covers the 52 species—including one discovered by Bentley and named after him—found in a region encompassing western Virginia and North Carolina and eastern West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The entry for each orchid provides the plant's scientific and common names, a description of the flower (including color, shape, and size), and information on the time of flowering, range, and typical habitat, all in the context of the southern mountains. A range map accompanies each description, and Bentley's own superb photographs are an additional aid to identification.

Using straightforward language yet incorporating the most up-to-date scientific information and nomenclature, the book will be welcomed by amateur naturalists or professional botanists looking for species in the field and by those who simply enjoy photographs of beautiful wildflowers.

5 out of 5 stars As Beautiful As the Orchids.......2002-05-13

This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.
