Book Description
Popular quilting expert Ricky Tims presents an imaginative new piecing technique that quilters will adore! Convergence quilts feature two or more fabrics cut into strips, sewn together, then cut and pieced again. They may look complex but are fun and easy to make. Four projects walk you through the process, and Tims shows how to add appliqué, beadwork, and other decorative touches to achieve an infinite number of looks from one ingenious technique!

Ricky Tim's Convergence Quilts.......2007-09-11
One look inside and I just couldn't wait to make won of these. Easier than they look. They can be so very pretty.
An easy technique that makes everyone say WOW!.......2007-08-25
Some quilting books show gorgeous quilts that you know you'll never make. The techniques are complex and time consuming, or the writing fails to give you confidence that you understand the steps involved. Perhaps it'd make sense if someone showed you just once... but the instructions are confusing.
Ricky Tims avoids these pitfalls, with a book that is *incredibly* well written -- and yields brilliant results.
Just how easy is this? I made my first convergence quilt top in two or three hours, while I was also watching a baseball game, using 4 fat quarters that I already had on hand. And I'm no quilting wiz.
Since then, I've made two additional convergence quilts, and I'm sure to make several more (the holidays are coming, after all). As a quilting instructor pointed out, these are like potato chips, in that you can't stop at one. I've loved every quilt I've made, and so has everyone who has seen these quilts.
Do note that the basic quilt is very small -- perfect for a wall quilt but not much more. I think you could create several of these as blocks to turn into a bed quilt, but you'd be on your own to do so. The quilt is so easy to make and I like the results so much that I am tempted to give it a try.
This would be a great book for someone who is fairly new to quilting. I wouldn't suggest it as your very first book (you should do at least a few small traditional projects first), but the forgiving nature of the techique is sure to give you a quilt to be proud of. It's all straight lines, and despite the appearance of the quilt it has no complex piecing. What fun! Highly recommended.
Convergence Quilting.......2007-06-07
This book is a fantastic starting point to creating your own convergence quilt. The step-by-step instructions are very clear and the examples so varied and intriguing that you are inspired to step outside your comfort zone and create something totally unique and different. If you're ready to try a new and exciting technique, this book is for you!
Simple but spectacular.......2007-04-05
What a fun concept this technique is for both beginning and experienced quilters. It is basic strip piecing and takes advantage of some of the fabulous batiks and hand-dyed fabrics available today. Most of my quilting friends who've used this book took their basic Convergence pieced quilt top and embellished/appliqued them to the nth degree. It is a contemporary look to say the least.
This Book is FUN!!.......2007-03-06
Once again I will sing the praises of Ricky Tims and his "think outside of the box" tips & techniques. He understands we are not all degreed artists, and some us are a bit more creatively challenged than others. He, once again, shows some simple, yet at times a bit daring, techniques that will yield results to impress even the best artists. (I know because I was able to WOW a couple of pros with Masters Degrees in Graphic Art.) Anyone can do this, even children. You just need to be able to bring yourself to sew it together then cut it apart, a phobia you will quickly get over. Ricky actually shows you how to "break the rules" and live with yourself for doing so, because the results are amazing & totally unique every time! These techniques work with any fabric or color choice. (I intentionally put together 3 fabrics that normally would not work with each other- purple, orange, and green- just to see, and had fantastic results!) You can't go wrong, no matter what choices you make, and best of all, you don't waste fabric! It takes only a little to "test" your idea, and even that becomes a work of art all on its own. I HIGHLY recommend this book... It is FUN!!!!!

Authors Patricia Maixner Magaret and Donna Ingram Slusser both confess to a lifelong fascination with shadows dating back to shadowplay in early childhood. Naturally, this attraction eventually found its way into their quilts, adding an inventive element to otherwise traditional patterns. Shadow quilts, they explain, combine several visual layers of images to create a design. The smaller individual blocks compose one layer, while the shadow layer is a large motif that hovers in the background of the smaller blocks. Like an optical illusion, this shadow image is not immediately apparent but rewards the careful viewer gradually. Thus, for instance, an autumn leaves quilt consisting of 24 multicolored blocks of similar leaf designs camouflages a huge golden leaf residing behind them. The seemingly complex designs become quite attainable in the authors' capable hands; good directions and photographs ensure that anyone with a working knowledge of traditional piecing and a dose of patience can create these enchanting designs. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Dramatic multi-layer images and sleight-of-hand techniques are shown in this truly original quilting book in which nine inventive projects progress from easier to more complex patterns, featuring lively shadow effects in both small and large scale.

Traditional Creativity.......2001-05-27
It is no surprise to discover that Patricia is a methodical, organized designer while Donna is a "what if" sort of person. They have blended these two approaches perfectly in Shadow Quilts. The concept is that you begin with a traditional block and layer it over a shadow version of itself (or even another block). The shadow is formed by making the block appear in the background in a different fabric. The first half of the book is devoted to exploring the possibilities and explaining the concept so that you can go out and create your own Shadow Quilt. The second half contains 9 projects so you can have your hand held until you are ready to fly on your own. Their writing style is entertaining and easy to read. There are numerous sections with detailed instructions for techniques such as adding a sleeve or hand painting your fabric. If you are looking for a way to be more inventive and want a little guidance, this is a good place to start.
Modern Color and Geometry in Tradition Quilting.......2000-05-04
Maxiner and Slusser lead the quilting world in structure and color with this new book. The quilts in the full-color photographs are stunning. The author/quilters have once again shown their artistic abilities. Quilting is an American tradition, but the authors have moved this tradition to a higher level in their choice of color placement and geometric patterns. In this book, they show that quilting is no longer just a process of using what is left to create a practical item. We can no longer envision quilters hand-sewing squares of scraps together to create a necessity. The authors of this book use up-to-date methods and tools. They have created beautiful works of art that are methodically thought out and carefully pieced and, as are traditional quilts, sure to become heirlooms. A beautiful book!

Bought two.......2007-01-14
I liked this book so well that I went and bought two (by mistake) I am partial to traditional quilts, but I like the different spin this has and I don't there too hard for beginner to intermediate.
Product Description
Streamline the cutting and piecing process while making these 9 stunning quilts using the surprisingly easy Strip-Piecing technique. The real beauty of this piecing technique is that great results do not rely on your scrutinizing every measurement allowing you the freedom to be expressive.

Make Great Quilts from Strips.......2006-12-08
STRIP EASY makes cutting patchwork squares as easy as can be. You simply sew strips of fabric together and then cut the patches required for the quilt. Ms. Meunier shows us nine different quilts that can be created with this technique.
A page of general directions is included and a page on how to piece the Drunkard's Path block is also given. For those of us not used to doing anything but straight lines, this page is especially helpful. While I am not a particular fan of the colors used in the quilts as they are show. I can certainly see the wonderful patterns and will be sure to make them using my own color style.
Each pattern has a materials list, cutting instructions and directions. The book doesn't have all the instructions in one place. That is, the layout artist is still thinking in the "above the fold" newspaper mentality of 20 years ago and uses the "continued on" direction instead of putting all the instructions for one quilt continuously. People don't want to have to hunt for the "rest of the story". It was most likely done this way so that each facing page would show a full-size quilt photo and the beginning instructions. Using another colorway would prevent this, as well as using smaller photos and placing the templates with the instructions rather than putting these things on a page farther back in the book.
Book Description
A classic 1931 tulip quilt pattern by Ruby McKim is taken into the next century with an easy stirp method for three different quilt settings.

Below Average.......2007-07-21
I've ordered a few books on fireplaces recently because I'm building a home. And this book just doesn't display the knowledge or variety of pictures that other books do. While this book makes claim to styles from "Early, French Classical, Georgian, American Colonial, Victorian, Modernist and Contemporary," they are barely reflected in some of the photos. I expected, not better photo quality pictures (aesthetics), but a better selection of pictures (aesthetics). Form, Function, and Design? Not well depicted
History book.......2006-02-03
This book presents very interesting historical information on the development of fireplace styles over the centuries, and the photographs included were inspiring! (If a photo had been provided for every fireplace described in detail in the text, I would have given 5 stars!) Keep in mind this book's emphasis is on the history rather than the 'how to' of fireplaces.
Very few pictures, very few ideas.......2005-05-27
This book is not worth your money. Fortunetely, I got it used. There are no good ideas and good pictures here. Don't buy it.

NEVER RECEIVED THE BOOK - COMPLAINTS DID NOTHING BUT WAISTE MY TIME AND MY TIME IS WORTH MORE THAN A $10 BOOK
Building bbqs.......2007-07-23
There were not too many books on the market when I decided to build my own barbque. This book helped me understand what I was getting myself into, but it fell short of giving me all the information I needed for my project. But it was a good resource. 3 out of 5 stars!
Gotta get started!!.......2007-01-17
There are some really great ideas in this book...want ot start building them all!
If you are looking for outdoor kitchen ideas, grill plans, Barbeque (the real wood burniung smokehouse style, not propane grill) outdoor fireplaces, etc. This is the best book to buy and start building!
Gives all the details.......2007-01-16
This gives details from the concrete support to tiling the countertops. It even shows how to brick a patio or walkway for an outdoor grilling area. The only problem is picking out a design from the many listed.
Absolutely Inspiring.......2003-01-20
I bought this book about a year ago and was immediately captured by the possibilities of different types of barbeques. I would have never been able to dream up these types of structures. The stucco ones that you can purchase preassembled are a joke compared to these. Aside from the design ideas, this book only gives a brief description of different building techniques for masonry, electrical and plumbing. The reason I did not give this book 5 stars is because it is not thorough enough with the "how to" aspect, the depth of experience that you need to complete each project or the costs involved (some of them would easily be ten grand). The book should be called "Backyard Barbeque Ideas for Your Contractor". You will have to be experienced in several trades or do a TON of research in order to do these projects yourself (I learned the true meaning of the term "learning curve"). I had zero experience, so being tenacious (stubborn), as usual, I figured I would give it a shot. I looked through the book several times to decide which style I liked the most and then began drawing plans based on a space in my back patio. After working on and off for nine months...yada, yada, yada...I have a beautiful brick and slate summer kitchen (covering a forty sq ft area), fully accessorized with sink, fridge and stainless grill. I used a concrete block structure covered with facebrick, which may have been overkill. But, I live in Florida and am fully convinced that this will be the only structure left standing if a category 5 hurricane ever goes through my backyard. One last word of advice...if you decide to take on one of these projects yourself, be patient, work slow and do it right the first time. It was a great learning experience and I owe it all to the inspiration of this book.

just looking.......2006-03-13
This book has excellent photo's of backyard ideas. It is a great book if you are just looking for ideas. I had expected a book with a little "how-to" mixed in.
Very helpful book with great ideas.......2005-12-08
I haven't finished reading it yet but so far love it. It has many photos along with a paragraph about why/how this works - the type of landscape and things to make sure you do/don't do. I am buying a copy for my sister for xmas.

Customer Reviews:
A nice picture book with a few words.......2004-06-20
In The Fireplace Book there are lots of beautiful pictures and a short introduction for each topic (approximately a few pages per topic); however, there is no depth. The author talks about a lot of designers, periods, and parts of fireplace design. She talks about historical changes and adaptations. What this book could really use is twice the information and an improved index (the existing one is VERY weak). It absolutely needs a section for sources and further reading, along with a glossary of terms and people. If you are looking for a coffee table or idea book and know all the design terms, this could be the one for you. If you are looking for information on designers, periods, historical development, etc. or don't already know all the terms this book could be interesting, but you will need to a more wordy book to complement it.
Good photography but little factual detail.......2001-11-05
A well presented book with a wide variety of photographs making it a good source of ideas for interior designers. Beyond that there is little to commend it. Most of the pictures are not referenced, even those of grand or unique designs of fireplace. The commentary is lacking in technical and historical detail and the organisation into historical periods is only loosely adhered to. Not a bad coffee table book but not much good if you want information on designing, building or choosing a fireplace.
SPRUCING UP HEARTH AND HOME.......2000-12-17
Photographs of hundreds of fireplaces worldwide offer options for giving your fireplace a different look. What's your preference? Art Deco? Something reminiscent of the Renaissance period or more Contemporary? Included in this book is a directory. Detailed information is presented covering salvaged fireplace parts, antique and reproduction mantels. Miranda Innes has provided a timely book to enrich the beauty of the home and hearth. There's no place like home for the holidays sitting before a warm fire or the glowing embers emanating from a classic fireplace.
