What a Beautiful Book.......2007-06-02
I read about this book in a local newspaper and was dying to get my hands on it and I was not disappointed. I love palm trees and living in California (southern) we enjoy seeing many types. If you are looking for a reference book or field guide this is not it. It is a gem of a coffee table book that everyone who has sat on my couch has been tempted to thumb through.
A wonderful gift for palm lovers.......2007-03-26
While "Palm Trees: A Story in Photographs" does not contain the detailed information that experts and amateur enthusiasts would refer to for guidance or research, it is an esthetic jewel of a book whose magnificent photos render it the perfect "coffee table" item for palm lovers everywhere.
Beautiful pictures--very informative........2007-02-18
We really like this book. It has a lot of the different types of palm trees in it with beautiful pictures and good, dscriptive information.

Funkifying the Clave: Afro-Cuban Grooves for Bass and Drums (with CD).......2007-01-12
Ok I will spend hours with this, lots here to learn, I understand you might be able to find the old VHS of this as well. Lots of fun end enjoyment for a bass player....
Buy this Book if you are serious about drumming!.......2006-03-18
An essential book for any drummer serious about understanding and playing Afro-Cuban grooves on the drum set.
A must have Latin encyclopedia.......2005-09-08
This book is essential if your a non-latin drummer trying to understand this percussive language. Clear, concise, this book will occupy you for months, even years.
WOW!.......2002-07-09
Combining traditional Latin claves with a funk backbeat. I bought this book / cd combo to improve my bass playing and drumming. (Yep! I play both.) I enjoy Latin / rock type music and wanted to become more familiar with the various styles and rhythms of this music. This book is awesome! It is also not fot the beginner or the timid unless you are dead serious about your playing. This will not only improve your playing, but your reading as well. The CD's start with a group of songs performed by the band. Then they break into LOTS of examples of ALL different styles of Latin music. Once you think you have it all mastered, the songs you heard at the beginning of the cd are there without drums / bass depending on which cd you want to play along with. Yes there are 2 cd's. One for drums, one for bass. By the way, all the songs on the cd have studio grade charts in the back of the book for you to follow. If this book doesn't keep you busy for a long time, you must already be a seasoned studio professional. Even if you are, there's probably something in here for you. ENJOY!
A Must-have for drummers/bassists looking for improvement.......2001-02-01
This book is a goldmine of information and ideas pertaining to the addition of the salsa feel in your playing. The authors lay out, in both English and Spanish, the different latin styles and feels clearly, and the included cd's make learning the material that much easier. The different patterns discussed include the clave, tumbao, songo, guaguanco, cha-cha, mozambique, and afro-cuban styles. Also included are 6 songs (complete with charts) for the student to play with (recorded with and without drum/bass tracks). This book is a must have for a player of any level. It was recommended to me by a bass player friend of mine who plays in a touring group specializing in latin/flaminco music. It has made a huge difference in my playing, and I've been drumming for 23 years. Get this book and enjoy the new world of ideas and possibilities!

Sharon O'Connor is a San Francisco-based musician and entrepreneur who matches delectable recipes from significant restaurants with music to suit them in one convenient package. The result is a fine gift idea--or a nice treat for anyone who likes to check out menus (or even try whipping up a few recipes) while listening to good music. Most of O'Connor's previous productions featured her own San Francisco String Quartet; this book comes instead with a compact disc of arias (in older recordings by outstanding artists now, for the most part, retired) chosen by members of the Metropolitan Opera Guild. The recipes are from assorted high-profile Manhattan restaurants. And though the disc opens with the "Brindisi," or drinking song, from Verdi's La Traviata, most of the other selections have little or nothing to do with food and beverages--or their consumption. No matter, it's still a lot of fun. One warning: the cookbook itself contains the only guide to the identity of the voices on the CD, and that can be somewhat aggravating for listeners with only the CD in hand trying to figure out just which tenor or soprano is performing. --Sarah Bryan Miller

An Exposition of Improvisational Elements - Book I & II.......2006-08-05
Both Frank Gambale Technique Book I & II are essentially studies of five different improvisational approaches to tackle a particular chord type, namely: scale, pentatonics, arpeggios, triads, intervals. As such, Frank presents a wide range of harmonic possibilities on improvisation, based upon which the intelligent student can construct meaningful solos when these music elements are internalized.
Note that in those two books there is a large amount of materials to digest, however a solid understanding of these materials is fundamental to jazz improvisation. The aspiring guitarist is urged to seek ways, from other sources, to build lines once these improvisational elements are digested. Recommended for a core course of improvisation.

a masterpiece of funk drumming analysis.......2000-08-02
I use this book extensively with my private students and consider it one of the best drumset instruction books ever written. The book explains the seminal James Brown funk grooves and how to build upon them, the Tower Of Power grooves that Garibaldi made famous with that band, and has eight funk-fusion music tracks with and without drums, charts of those songs and developmental analysis of the different grooves used in those songs. The drum solo alone on the CD is worth the price of admission. There is also a companion video called "Tower of Groove" that shows Garibaldi and a very tight band playing these songs.

This book is golden.......2006-03-27
The earlier reviewer pretty much covers what the material is about, I just want to add that its just a power packed book. Its not about riffs or scales or modes - its about entire frameworks you can use for improvisation. The material is dense, it is NOT for beginners, but if you know a little about guitar and theory, this thing is incredibly valuable.
A million ideas to improve your soloing.......2004-02-25
This is an excellent book for anyone who is serious about learning to play guitar. Although, I bought this book for $40 not $100+ as listed here. Gambale breaks everything down into chord types. Minor 7, major 7, unaltered dominant 7, altered dominant 7, minor 7 (b5), diminished. He attacks each chord type with several soloing approaches. He lists and gives examples of appropriate modes, arpeggios, pentatonics that can be used over that specific chord type. For example. When discussing a minor 7 chord he says there are two ways to look at it. You can look at it as a II chord or a VI chord. Say you are playing a dmin7. Dmin 7 is the II of C and the VI of F. So in this case you can use D Dorian or Aeolian. He also says that if you treat Dmin7 as the second of C you can use. Dmin, Emin, Amin blues/pentatonic scales over the Dmin7. Since the minor chords are II, III, and VI in any major scale. You can also approach soloing using arpeggios from cmaj over the Dmin and you can play these in fourths to get a more interesting sound, rather than just running up or down arpeggios. He has gone through all of that by page 8 and there is about 80 pages in the book. So basically, there is a huge wealth of knowlege in this book and it is an excellent way for a guitarist to get away from moving to the trusty pentatonic scales as soon as its time to solo. This book also comes with a Cd containing samples of each excercise as well as a couple short songs that Gambale has put together. Im not a big fan of the effects he uses while playing the excercises, but it doesn't really take anything away from the learning experience. If you can get a chance to get a hold of this book you should give it a chance, but know that it will take some serious time and experimentation to make these theoretical ideas come out of your guitar as music. They cant really be charging $107 for this, can they? Keep your eyes open and you should be able to find this book for around $40.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible wealth of exercises. 1/2 the price of the video!.......2004-03-06
First of all, I'm not a die-hard Jaco fan. Hell, he isn't even in my personal top 10 list. So my reason for giving this 5 stars is not "because it's Jaco"; it's because this package contains a WEALTH of bass knowledge and exercises designed for the non-beginner, jam packed into a 36 page book and single CD.
The contents of this book/CD package were directly taken from the video edition of the same title. But the book/CD stands alone as a separate product; you DO NOT need the video to make sense of it. In fact after I bought this, it was still years before I got to see the video.
The book starts off with a quick review of the scales and modes, and the rest consists of transcriptions of all the exercises and solo pieces found on the CD. One thing that sets some of these excercises apart from other books is that they're fun and musical, not boring and mechanical. You may have learned all your scales and modes before, but these exercises have you practicing and playing them in new ways and in new position. Jaco also covers the use of chords, harmonics, playing in odd beat divisions, and plays a few solo songs that really put it all together with groove. All of the exercises are GREAT for helping you think-out-side-the-box.
Aside from the exercises, the CD also contains some of the band-performed music found on the video and interview clips. Jaco talks about subjects like the importance of reading sheet music (a good reason why this book contains no tablature), how he became a bass player, and playing different musical styles.
Considering this book/CD set has pretty much everything from the video and costs half as much, I'd actually recommend this product over the video itself.
Insight into Jaco's Technique from the man himself!.......2003-01-26
This instructional book gives many exercises from Jaco himself. It has a cd that comes with it that helps out. It covers harmonics (has a chart) and ways to improve your left hand speed, precision, and clarity. The book itself is clear enough that you can use it to teach yourself. Though the book goes with the video (of the same name) so it's good to get both. Also, on the cd is a jam session with jaco and an interview. All in all it's a great value and no jaco collection is complete without it.

Lofts DesignSource
ASIN: 0471623636 |
Book Description
The New York City loft has become a tradition. It is possible to look back at the evolution of the loft as an architectural type that has influenced the whole concept of the New York apartment dwelling, particularly the nature of its space. Large areas of urban blocks containing a huge variety of warehousing have been transformed by innovative design, providing the pattern for the architectural Manhattan loft. The central discipline of the Manhattan loft lies in the handling of space and material elements, the common theme being openness This book presents a critical review of ten architects' work. The lofts reveal a developing modernity - based on a flexible spatial content - which is not about fashion, but is instead concerned with a sense of rooted settlement and the restorative values of ordered space and light within the basic structure of a personal retreat. At first sight these lofts are all very different; some are minimalist, others more opulent and sophisticated. But what is common throughout is that they have been conceived within the pluralistic framework of the modern architectural tradition.

Book Description
Joe Ambrose stayed at the Chelsea Hotel, home to many famous authors, artists, and outlaws down the years. Andy Warhol shot
Chelsea Girls there, and welsh poet Dylan Thomas died there, having reputedly inspired the young Zimmerman to change his name to Bob Dylan.
Every room at the Chelsea tells its own story-not unlike The Overlook in Stephen King's
The Shining. Sid Vicious met his death in one room, an episode recounted in detail by Rockets Redglare.
This is the first factual book on the building and features conversations with William S. Burroughs, Paul Bowles, Gerard Malanga, Victor Bockris, and others.

New York urban planning before 1900.......2001-11-18
Ms. Boyer documents the urban fabric of Manhattan from 1850 to 1900. She focuses mainly on urban planning and the architecture of the era, at times blending social history into her narrative to convey what life was like for the well-to-do of the era. Topics include early retailers, theaters, hotels, apartment buildings, and even brothels, but the overarching theme is how Manhattan developed as the city spread to fill out the street grid. Photos and drawings average more than one per page, with only several floor plans, although most page space is used for the text.
