Paint is often seen as the magic wand we can wave over rooms to change them into something completely new. To a great extent this is true: with a little bit of practice and a limited investment, just about anyone can manage startling paint-induced room transformations. With exquisite photos and expert advice, Better Homes and Gardens' Paint Ideas & Decorating Techniques explores both the aesthetic considerations behind choosing the right paint treatment and the specific how-tos of achieving them. Dozens of photos showcase a wide array of living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens, while extensive captions analyze the paint effects in each one, from bold solids to subtle textures, stripes to plaids. The techniques explained are the usual ones: ragging, combing, sponging, faux leather and suede, checkerboard and diamond patterns.

The success of these rooms often depends as much on the well-chosen furnishings and accessories as on the paint treatments, and these considerations are addressed here in only the broadest terms. Would-be decorators seeking this type of specific advice had best look elsewhere, but anyone hunting for easy, attractive paint solutions shown in good-looking room settings will find plenty of ideas in these pages. --Amy Handy

2 out of 5 stars A few ideas - not worth the $$.......2000-04-17

There were approximately 10 painiting techniques shown in this book. The content is basically pictures of what other people have done, but I was looking for examples of what to do for my personal situations. For example, if you have, white wood floorboards, or if you have bright sunny rooms. I was also looking for color combinations that they recommended, you will not find that here.

This book lacked in explanation of "what to do if..." I have textured walls, but liked the looks of the stripes that the book exampled. But for my textured walls, straight lines would not be possible. This book lacks explanation of individual situations...

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Paint Ideas.......2000-03-26

I just bought a new house, my first, and it was very important to me that it look like a showcase. I did plenty of research before I bought any interior decorating books. I even talked to a professional interior designer who gave me some free advice: get what you like. I like this book. It has more faux finishes than I have rooms in my house, so I can repaint in a few years with different styles I've learned about in this book. Some of the finishes are a little too "cute" for me, but it is still a book with techniques I've never seen before. I also recommend Recipes for Surfaces, Decorative Paint Finishes Made Simple by Mindy Drucker. Her book is not "cute" at all, and together, these books tell you all you need to know about paint finishes.

5 out of 5 stars Small book packed with pretty pictures & nice ideas.......2007-06-28

This book is part of a series that Mary Engelbreit issued a few years ago. The book series is comprised of these nifty little books filled with great ideas, depending on the topic. The photos in this particualar book are absolutely amazing, just as all of M.E.'s books have wondeful photos. Ideas are easy to follow. Very inspirational.

PS: this book was written in 1999 but the information still holds true, ---even in 2007!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to the Mary Engelbreit book collection........2000-12-11

This is a typical Mary Engelbreit book with lavish pictures and a "vintagey", comfortable look. Where some of her books are more for ideas than how-to's, this one is not. While you will most definitely find much inspiration in these pages, it also includes shopping lists and detailed instructions for recreating these looks in your home. There are many painting techniques described, including striping, sponging, glazing, and a few more!

I'm not a professional painter so I need a lot of details on how to do something and this book was short on details. Most of the pictures of the effects are very close up, so I have no idea what they look when viewed a few feet away. I was disappointed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for modern paint designs.......2001-12-30

I am a professional decorative painter, and this is without a doubt my favorite idea book. This doesn't have any of the frilly country stencils or flowers - this is all very stylized and modern, with clean lines and bright colors and metallics. It is definately something different from the normal decorative painting fodder. It is a great addition to a collection of idea/reference books. I use this book all the time.

            Book Description

For more than thirty years, Foxfire books have brought the philosophy of simple living to hundreds of thousands of readers, teaching creative-self-sufficiency, the art of natural remedies, home crafts, and preserving the stories and customs of Appalachia. Inspiring and practical, this classic series has become an American institution.

Foxfire 12 is the latest volume, the first in more than five years. Here are reminiscences about learning to square dance and tales about traditional craftsmen who created useful items in the old-time ways that have since disappeared in most of the country. Here are lessons on how to make rose beads and wooden coffins, and on how to find turtles in your local pond. We hear the voices of descendants of the Cherokees who lived in the region, and we learn about what summer camp was like for generations of youngsters. We meet a rich assortment of Appalachian characters and listen to veterans recount their war experiences. Illustrated with photographs and drawings, Foxfire 12 is a rich trove of information and stories from a fascinating American culture.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BETTER FOXFIRE OFFERINGS........2007-06-06

To start, pay no attention to Publisher's Weekly when the whine about the repeativeness of the Foxfire books. The reviewer obviously has not read all the books. I own, read and use almost all of the Foxfire books. Actually, we owe both the Foxfire people and we certainly owe the characters of a gone generation. This work, Volume 12, is indeed like the others. That is a good thing! A wonderful history of how it was. In this day and age of having most needs meet and something for everyone on the Wal-mart shelf, we tend to forget just what it was like in our not too distant past. These books, the Foxfire books, brings to light skills, attitudes and a way of life that is all but forgotten. Do be warned though, as one reviewer has pointed out, these are not step by step "how to do it" books. But This is sort a good thing as the how to books out there are sort of a dime a dozen any more. When a people lose their history, they lose part of their soul. As the title of this work states, this addresses many of the old forgotten skills and there is so much more. The editors have done a wonderful job. They have made a very honest effort to replicate the dialect of those places and times and I feel that this is a big part of the charm of these books. I am old enough to have known many of the kinds of folks featured in these books, being only one generation past them, and have a great appreciation for what and how they did all the little things we take so for granted now. I might also suggest that you actually try some of the things mentioned in these volumes. It will give you even more of an appreciation for what they did, and hey, who knows, the skill you develope just might come in handy one of these days! This particular volume also includes some great interviews with the decendants of Cherokees who, after all, were the original owners of most of the land involved here. These interviews are priceless. Recommend this and the other Foxfire books highly.

5 out of 5 stars The Entire Foxfire Series.......2007-02-01

I have the entire series, plus the AUNT AIRE "special". I consider them all treasures. The way theu came about and still do, the subjects covered and in such detail too. There are 12 plus the special extra and they are all equel in value to me. To my knowledge, they are the most readily available to the public and a source of old Appalachian ways describing them in great detail.

            4 out of 5 stars My Style!.......2007-09-21

Finally, a book that reflects my decorating style! For years I have taken bits and pieces of several styles and mixed them up into "my style" and now I know the name for it--"Formal Country". It is neither "stuffy" formal nor "primative" country. It is a refined casual that reflects an appreciation of the artistry of formal and country. Every page of this book brings an "Oh, yes" to my lips. This book is a joy!

3 out of 5 stars I admit to being sucked into this book by its cover........2000-11-10

This book is a remake (a tenth anniversary) of an earlier publication of the same name. Being that I don't care for cutsey wooden plaques, and the red, white, and blue of the "original" American Country look made famous so many years ago, I was hoping for the best with Formal Country.

It just did not live up to the terminology "formal" for my tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Formal country, great book!.......2000-03-29

This book experiments with different shades of country style, from the Santa Fe to the European Tuscany or Provence, displaying the versatility that country decoration can have, departing from the traditional decoration ideas one may have.

The photographs offer an amazing display of the richness and colorfulness of the different settings that make possible to visualize the match of these many different styles to the country warmth.

This book is great for its innovative approach and its simplicity in the combination of elements and the degree of contrast one may play with.

1 out of 5 stars Should be called Study in Great Britain for Dummies.......2004-02-05

Having studied for two years in a non-English speaking country, I found that this book was extremely weak in presenting issues of study abroad in very different countries. I thought the title of the chapter "Daring to be Different: The British University System" was particularly laughable. It would have been better to have a more well-rounded author, or let this author write a specialty book from her own narrow experience.

This is a very useful book. Even just some little tidbits of information can save you from wasted time, money, and a disastrous experience. For example, I am thinking about recommending my son to study abroad at Oxford, England during the fall of his junior year because Oxford is a world renowned school outside of U.S. Before reading this book, I didn't know that Oxford and most of the Great Britain and Irish schools are on a trimester system. My son's college is on a semester system. So, if he were to go to Oxford (assuming that he can get in), he would only be studying for nine weeks. The rest of his semester would be wasted.

Here is another example of a good tidbit of information: If a student were to study abroad during the spring semester, he or she should apply for financial aid (which is usually done during the spring semester) during the fall semester before going abroad.

One unique point about this book is that it also covers going to graduate school abroad. However, there were some shocking facts I didn't expect to see such as "Earning a PhD in the U.S. requires 6 to 8 years, while in other countries only 4 years are needed. One of the reasons is that students enter undergraduate universities at a higher level than Americans do. So, they are doing U.S. graduate level work by the end of their undergraduate degrees..." Wow, I used to think that our undergraduate system is at the top of the world. I didn't know that college seniors in some other countries are doing U.S. graduate level work.

I won't waste the space here and list the content or the chapters of this book. Suffice to say that this book covers all areas of studying abroad in great detail and in good logical order. There are many excellent advices in this book. They will give you a good study abroad experience as well as save you time and money! I highly recommend this book.

By the way, this book is much, much better than "Getting the Most from Study Abroad."

2 out of 5 stars Not incredibly helpful.......2003-11-04

I read this book looking for some general information on study abroad and found it to be rather unhelpful. I think that students would be better served by going to someone in their school's study abroad office instead of buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars Could have been more helpful.......2007-04-20

Currently, there are about eight other reviews. They seem to indicate that the primary value of this book lies in the fact that there is no other source of information on foreign universities where the classroom instruction is conducted in the English language. While I appreciate that value, I am seriously disappointed by the fact that most of the cited schools are not the big name schools I had hoped to learn about. Rather, they include such "universities" as "University of Costa Rica, Rain Forest Adventure" with a total "student body" of 15, and "College Year in Athens." Some of these colleges sound more like businesses than like century-old centers of academe, such as "Webster University Thailand." I also wonder about the wisdom of going all the way to Italy to get a degree from the anglo-sounding "John Cabot University". And I fail to see the point in including the universities in England, as we already know that they conduct classes in the English language. Making the book seem even weirder is that, where there are photographs of the universities, they seem to be candid black and white photos from the 1960s.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on studying abroad!.......2004-02-05

This book is unique among study abroad guide books because it lists 68 schools around the world that teach in English and offer American-style degrees. There is simply no other book like this one. You don't have to worry about matching the academic calendar system or the language used in the courses if you go to one of these schools.

A second excellent point about this book is that it tells you the level of academic difficulty of each institution by the SAT scores. So, you can find the schools that match you. A third excellent point: it tells you what each school is good at. Some schools focus on science and engineering, while others on humanities or business management. The fourth: this book tells you whether the faculty of a school is available for help and mentoring, or aloof and unavailable.

Other aspects described by this book are tuition rates and financial aid information, housing options, extracurricular activities, and support services, contact information and directions on how to apply, advice on staying healthy and staying safe.

I give this book four stars because I think it can be improved. For example, it would be helpful if the authors were to categorize the colleges by their level of difficulty, their similarity in academic areas, and their cost, etc. Also, I would like to see the section on the academic programs for each school be expanded provide more detail. Another suggestion is to include some feedbacks from the American students who have gone to these schools.

As for the steps and procedures to take for studying abroad, I highly recommend the book, "Study Abroad for Dummies."

            5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-10-30

I agree with all the other reviews that have been listed. It's a very good, well organised book. There's so little information out there for students who want to study abroad, but this book (thankfully!!) gives you everything that you need.

Having this book, I don't feel like I'm jumping into the unknown anymore by applying to study abroad. I'm so glad that this guide was written!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need.......2003-10-28

Great book. Great introduction to how to get in to a university outside the US. Everything is laid out in an easy to read and easy to understand format. So far this is the only book that I've seen which is dedicated to people who want to study outside the US for the full four years, not just as a semester abroad (but it would be helpful for those looking to do a semester abroad as well).

This book answers all the little questions that are impossible to find answers to if you are trying to research foreign schools by yourself.

There is a great variety of schools listed: from not so far off (like in Canada) to schools that are literally on the other end of the earth.

Study Away has really got everything that you need to help you get in to a foreign university.

I highly recommend it to everyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars A world of opportunity awaits.......2003-10-27

This book is very easy to read and clearly tells you everything that you need to know to get into a school abroad. I wouldn't consider trying to apply abroad without the help of a guidebook and this one is really great.

"Study Away" really helps show the world (literally) of opportunities out there for where you can go to college. I really glad I picked it up because my choices in the United States have been limited somewhat by financial considerations. I had no idea that Americans could even apply to so many foreign schools (and have it be so much less expensive!).

            Overall, a very good book.

4 out of 5 stars nice color photos and good info.......2007-04-19

This 64-page book is interesting to flip through and is akin to a minature coffee table book (therefore, maybe it's an 'end table' book?).

On the plus side, the pictures are sharp and clear and sparkly. There are some good ideas contained within, with accurate and concise info on managing a pond. The downside is, there is a lot of vegetation and landscaping featured in the photos. I'd have preferred stark photos of naked ponds, sans all the greenery. Because of that, the book has more of a glossy "Better Homes and Garden" look, rather than, "here are some good ideas for your backyard pond."

And the variety of ponds offered is a little shy. Growing up in Portsmouth, VA, I was a frequent visitor to an old house nearby that boasted the most beautiful fish pond one could imagine. It was ornate, massive, rambling and ostentatious. "Formal Ponds" featured only more modest square, rectangular and circular ponds. Yawn.

My *kingdom* for a book on fish ponds that features vintage designs and old photos.

However, I'd still recommend it. It's not too pricey and it's a fun read for a rainy day.

                Book Description

One of the biggest challenges of the new millennium is to provide access to basic education for the approximately 840 million adults in the world who cannot read or write and to ensure that all the world’s children get some form of primary education. It is increasingly accepted that non-formal education has an important role to play in achieving this.
At a Symposium held in Burkina Faso in 2003, the Association for the Development of Education in Africa’s Working Group on Non-Formal Education took the argument one step further. It showed how, because of its diversity and flexibility, NFE can make a special contribution to the quality of provision, by making education not only available, but accessible, acceptable and adaptable. It also made a case for the complementarity of non-formal and formal provision and showed the need to mainstream NFE into the education system as a whole. This book reproduces the papers presented at the Symposium, with an overview summarizing its discussions and findings:

*The first part looks at theoretical issues and presents the findings of research carried out in Burkina Faso about the indicators which can be used to measure the effectiveness of the right to education. It places the discussion in a historical context and looks at current policies on the roles of non-formal and formal education in realising the vision of the seminal 1990 Jomtien Declaration on Education for All.

*The second part of the book contains case studies from seven African countries showing the diversity and potential of NFE initiatives.
