4 out of 5 stars Great book on Marbling.......1999-09-01

What keeps this from five-stars is that I have not seen any other book as comprehensive as this one.

The history portion seems exhaustive, and I began to keel over with the descriptions of what happens when you marble (the paints form a 'lip' with the carragheenan to prevent them from blending together), but the color plates are worth the price of the book alone.

There are facsimiles of old German marbling swatch books (which I'd love to get a copy of).

This book is for those who love marbled paper (and fabrics) and who want to know about the history. Might not be the best First Book on marbling, but the process is best learned in a classroom setting, IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars A Japanese form of marbled papers.......2004-10-10

Even the name, 'spilled ink,' has a Japanese sense of self-deprecation about it. Don't be fooled: this simple and elegant art deserves the most serious respect.

Western marbling uses a thickened medium to support the inks. Suminagashi, instead, relies on the fluidity of water's surface to create its delicate drifting marks. It differs from Western marbling also in that it tends towards a limited palette, often being executed with black ink only. The results, however, go far past the Western style in delicacy and complexity. Suminagashi can fill the paper with marks as vivid and dense as marbled paper's. It can also create airy, open patterns as pale as morning mist, the kind that sit well under calligraphy or drawing.

Best of all, suminagashi is simpler in tools, materials, and process than its Western relative. You can try it yourself with only a shallow pan, ink, and a little detergent. Even kids can get good results within their first few tries, and get enough different results to hold their interest.

The basic simplicity of the craft takes nothing away from the masterworks of the craft's finest artisans. There is infinite subtlety in the play of ink and surface. The samples shown here are breathtaking. The book's value, though is in letting you create images of your own.

Go ahead. It's quite an experience seeing the films of ink forming on the water; it's almost magical to capture them on paper for yourself.

      Book Description

Graining and marbling--the craft of painting materials to imitate wood and marble--has seen a considerable revival over the last decade or more, and it is now taught and applied by an increasing number of talented and innovative practitioners of the craft. This classic text, first published in 1949 and out of print for many years, has again been revised to include additional colour plates and text describing popular finishes, such as lapis lazuli, tortoiseshell, malachite, patinated gold and fossilstone marble.

The large graining section has been enhanced by replacing the descriptive ground colors with two full color plates of suggested colors aligned to the British Standard, making them easier to obtain from paint suppliers and to make up as required. A chapter on broken colour effects, including ragging, dragging, stippling, sponging and shading, is again included.

If you've ever admired the intricate marbled patterns on the endpapers of old books, you may be surprised at how readily this look adapts to fabric. With a relatively small investment in materials and a good dose of patience, anyone can learn the secrets of creating elaborate marbling on silk, cotton, rayon, polyester, sheers, even ultra suede and tissue lamé. Filled with good instructions and helpful color photos, this guide explains all the basics and shows how to achieve 15 different marbling patterns and variations, plus advanced techniques like using resists to silhouette shapes in the marbling, adding dimension with rubber stamps, embellishing edges with scalloping, and making a three-color progression that allows for careful planning of a color scheme. To begin using your newly marbled fabrics, chose from among seven step-by-step projects, including vests, a pillow, and a quilt (there's also additional information on quilting marbled fabric). A brief gallery of some of the author's lovely wearables and quilts proves that marbled fabric lends itself perfectly to so much more than just scarves. --Amy Handy

This is a wonderful how-to book for the novice or advanced fabric "marbler." Easy to read, step-by -step instructions will help the beginner get set up, order supplies, prepare fabrics, mix colors and have a very successful time with this great fabric decorating technique. The advanced reader will see 15 beautiful color plates of marbling examples, and diagrams to reproduce them. In addition, I especially enjoyed reading the brief history of marbling. The Appendix and Resources section are very helpful. I plan to introduce this project to my students and this book will be an invaluable resource!

This book, one of several that Anne Chambers has written on marbling, contains basic info for a beginner. Being somewhat experienced as a marbler, I found it to be a disappointment and not worth the money. There are other books on marbling that I think are much better for beginners, such as "Marbling on Paper and Fabric" by Carol Taylor, "Marbling Techniques: How to Create Traditional and Contemporary Designs on Paper and Fabric" by Wendy Addison Medeiros, and "Marbling on Fabric" by Daniel & Paula Cohen.

The ancient art of marbling--long confined to the endpapers of leather-bound books--is experiencing renewed interest among today's crafters. This nicely presented book covers all the basics of marbling paper and fabric, from making your own tools to working with various types of paints to setting up your workspace. The heart of the book explains the specifics of how to create seven basic marbling patterns and how to troubleshoot technical problems, plus ways to achieve seven specialty techniques, including marbling dimensional objects. The concluding section offers ideas for several projects incorporating marbling, as well as a brief explanation about going into business selling your marbled products.

I learned more from this particular book in the first 30 minutes of reading it, than I did from three other resources on Marbling. I found answers in this book, I couldn't find anywhere else. Great photos of completed works and very simplifed instructions. One section focuses entirely on Preparing to Marble, tools for marbling, set-up, and furthermore is sectioned off by acrylics, watercolor, oil paints and tempera paints. Another section focuses on, patterns, tech. problems, special techniques, marbling on fabrics and resources. I would recommend this book first and foremost before all others.

I found this book at the library and searched everywhere for it. Thanks for carrying it. It has all the info I need to start marbling on paper which is an old art form and hard to find info and supplies for.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and readable.......2004-06-15

This is a great introduction to paper marbling - the technique that produces those wonderful swirls, feathery patterns, and colored speckles on paper.

The book is divided very roughly into three parts. The first gives clear recipes and techniques for preparing the marbling media and paints, for choosing and preparing the paper or fabric, and for creating the patterns. The authors are sensitive to the needs of the home crafter, and generally avoid exotic materials and tools. The second part of the book is a visual catalog of marbled patterns with directions for making them yourself. The final section of the book suggests uses for the marbled paper or fabric - boxes, books, and lots of other applications.

This is a how-to book, so leaves without discussion of some topics. There's not a lot of historical discussion, even though marbling has been used for hundreds of years. It doesn't cover more advanced applications, including marbling the edges a book's block of pages. This is for the starting crafter, though, not for professionals or academicians.

This is an enjoyable intro to a very enjoyable craft. If you want to get started in marbling, I'd suggest starting here.

An excellent primer on many variants of silk painting, The Silk Painting Workshop provides in-depth coverage of materials, techniques, color principles, and design sources. Beyond explaining the methods extremely well and supplying a beautiful and diverse selection of projects, author Jane Venables is skilled at expounding upon the nebulous doctrines of successful color combinations and good design. The typical painted silk piece displays flowers or abstracts; Venables also has a way with feathers, fish, birds, geometrics, and landscapes, and she helps us believe we can learn too. Her marvelous sense of design and glorious ability with color pervade every page, making even a quick glance through the pages an irresistible enticement to trying out this art form. --Amy Handy
