A Gallery of Natural Wonders.......2002-03-26
It is regrettable that this book is no longer in publication. It is an exquisite compilation of the national parks of Japan, stating at the northeast tip of Hokkaido island, and proceeding south to Iwo Jim and the Ryukyu island chain that reaches almost to Taiwan. It includes active volcanoes, even one that erupts almost every day. The climates range from sub-arctic to tropical. Also found are sand dunes, hot springs, waterfalls, forests, scenic calderas similar to Crater Lake, picturesque seashores of all sorts, and beautiful mountains, among them the incredible Fuji.
The parks are divided into geographical groups. Each park is described separately, and most have detailed maps. The written text is excellent, but the highlight is the photography. Many of the photographs are done in four-color format to accentuate the highlights.
Even if you never make it to Japan, and I haven't, you will derive hour after hour of enjoyment from this esceptional travel book. I strongly recommend its acquisition, and equally,
against loaning it out.

Book Description
An ideal commingling of exquisite and often rare materials, perfection in craftsmanship and exceptional purity of line are what place Ming design, particularly in furniture, at the zenith of Chinese art. MING FURNITURE IN THE LIGHT OF CHINESE ARCHITECTURE is the first book to show the essential kinship between Ming furniture and the buildings they were designed to be placed and used within. Sarah Handler's special perspective sheds a luminous glow on the concepts of interior and exterior form, function, placement, and purpose and reveals the inextricably intertwined relationship of Ming furniture to Chinese architecture. Decoration, construction, and function come together into a harmonious and indivisible whole, just as the Chinese artisans envisioned.
Customer Reviews:
Mortise and Tenon.......2006-07-28
Being a fan of Sarah Handler, its easy to feel the furniture flow through the Ming Architecture.
Just having retured from China and Tibet, this book was in the back of my mind as I stood and gazed up at the columns and beams mortised and tenoned together to form the typical Chinese structural backbone. Sarah has made the connection between the structural engineering of Ming/Qing building skills and the master carpenters' use of the Lu Bang Jin manual that describes appropriate and propitious use of shapes, materials, orientation and all things lucky in architecture. Buy this book and you will be happy, have prosperity and long life!
BEN
disappointing analysis of furniture and architecture.......2005-07-29
chinese furniture have a strong relationship with architecture, in its proportion, construction, and relationship to the space. I was looking forward to see a more detailed analysis of such relationship but this book turned out to be a mediocre repetition of numerous chinese furniture books already in the market. Many of the pictures are from dealer's photos or Museum's existing photos. The reference paintings are primary from Chin P'ing Mei or similar paintings which have been published numerous times by other authors. The sketch or drawings are mediocre. There are no measured or proportional anaylsis of the furniture to the architecture. I have returned this book.
Book Description
This book features a fascinating collection of some of the most innovative tables, chairs and lights ever designed; those that push the boundaries of imagination, art, and design.
This is a must for any designer interested in not only beautiful and often innovative design, but how such furniture is constructed. Taking 50 of each of these objects (tables, chairs, and lights), this book follows the furniture maker from original brief through to finished object, and features the work of some of the most highly talented and accomplished designers in the world. It is visually stunning, with photographs and diagrams to illustrate the design and construction processes, whilst particular attention is paid to the materials employed.
A veritable tome, this book will become essential to all designers' reference libraries. This new value-for-money and re-sized paperback edition brings the book within reach of all design students who will value it.

Nice book.......2007-02-06
Nice book, ain't got chance to finish it.,
But initial experience is really good..
Great Book.......2005-11-23
There are tons of furniture books out there but this one is different from the norm. Not only does this book show images of the final product but it also has illustrations of how the furniture was built, the process of development and material call outs. This allows the reader to gain a much deeper understanding of the furnitures. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
No one can resist smiling at these houses a-dazzle with twinkling lights and decked with flying reindeer, jolly snowmen, inflatable Santas, plastic sleighs—and every other sign that hearts are overflowing with Christmas cheer. It’s become a holiday tradition around the globe to drive through the neighborhood to look at these extravagantly decorated homes. Planet Christmas offers a world tour of the best and the brightest, from Auckland, New Zealand, where the Ballentine family pumps clouds of artificial snow off their balcony, to Peters Township, PA, where sightseers view Santa and Mrs. Claus presiding over a Santa’s Workshop 50 yards wide.

This is a beautiful book. The pictures were excellent. I really enjoyed it and got some good ideas for my decorating.
Planet Christmas: The World's Most Extreme Christmas Decorations!.......2007-01-19
I don't have the space or the money to have an extreme Christmas at my house, so I build on to what I have every year. This book inspired me to try some new things and each family who contributed to the making of the book had some neat tip or suggestion. I like having the best display in my neighborhood every year. The adults might think Christmas decorating is a waste of time and money, but the kids love it. I can't wait for next Christmas. My favorite is the elegant house and yard display from Springfield, Massachusetts on page 26. Other favorites are the Rice family on page 95, and the wonderful London displays on page 112 & 113.
pictures.......2007-01-19
Plenty of pictures, so few words. We were hoping to find more info on decorating. Not worth the $.

Book Description
Continuing to put great classic and contemporary design within everyone s grasp, Chronicle Books proudly delivers the next four installments of the popular Compact Design Portfolio. Written by top design critics, these books cover modern masters whose work ranges from the cozily domestic to the aggressively avant-garde: Eva Zeisel, whose elegantly democratic housewares span a 70-year career; Ingo Maurer, who raises lamp and lighting design to a high art form; Gaetano Pesce, whose rejection of traditional good taste brought about revolutionary furniture design; and George Nelson, the impresario behind the Marshmallow sofa and other Herman Miller classics. Follow-ing the introductory essay, a visual gallery exhibits selections of the designers best work in photographs and sketches. Presented in an irresistible small format, this series encapsulates the life, work, and influence of the great designers of our time.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting reference book.......2000-05-19
This book is divided into lights with various materials such as ceramics, plastics, paper, etc. The lights are fun, zany, aesthetically pleasing, as a form of art, contribution towards perserving the environment through the usage of recylcleable material, avant-garde, elegant, practical, simple. The book also depicts the mechanism of some lights & how the lights are installed. Some of them are plain simple but downright effective & I wonder to myself aloud why wouldn't I think of that before. This book doesn't contain much classic lights or probably, it deliberately chooses not to feature lights of the famous but exposing the readers to more diversified range of lights by various designers. Despite so, there are still lights by Philippe Starck, but Ingo Maurer can't be seen & neither does Archille Castiligione. Probably this lighting reference book is not as precise as I want but still, it doesn't detract from the fact that it reveals to us there are almost unlimited way of expressing our creativity over the expression of light. Keep up the good work.
