Talk about fast!.......2006-12-18
I did quilts out of this book and there are so fast to make it will make your head swim. Actually I was astonished at how fast they were to make. Easy, easy, easy. Fast gifts!
Made my first quilt!.......2006-12-01
I have never taken a quilting class but made my first quilt using this book! The instructions are easy to follow and the photographs clearly illustrate step-by-step how to proceed. She tells you exactly how much fabric you need once you decide the size quilt you want to make and how many blocks are necessary. I had not been excited about the log cabin pattern, but when I saw all the different ways the blocks could be arranged, I developed an interest. I have four small children under the age of 8 and began my quilt in August so that it would hopefully be completed by Christmas. Much to my surprise,I finished it (about 70"x70") in a month! I would recommend this book to any beginning quilter.

fantastic book!!!!!.......2007-08-08
I found the book to be even more than I expected. The pictures and description doesn't do it justice. I'm not a fan of paper-piecing, but this book has got me very interested in trying it. smarlow
Endless possibilities.......2006-11-11
Four stars because I don't happen to like many of the examples of actual quilts, and perhaps that's because they reflect a Swiss / German origin and are a trifle too formal for my taste. Elsewise, this is a fabulous book. Found it at the library, tried to take notes, and decided it was worth owning because I'd never be able to harvest all the ideas. As might be expected from the origin, the instructions are thorough and clear. I don't happen to need them; I want ideas, not steps. YMMV.
The larger point: the basic log cabin block presents an almost endless number of ways to play with color both within the block and within the finished work. Adding the twist, and then varying the starting shape, and then mixing the blocks (different starting shapes within the same finished work) essentially squares the # of colorway options available to the textile worker.
This book contains enough examples of finished quilts to give you an idea of what can be done with the shapes. Each finished quilt is accompanied with a line drawing of the pieces so you can work out your own colorways.
I like infinite possibilities. Now to find the time to play with them all...
Log Cabin with a TWIST by Barbara T Kaempfer.......2006-03-25
What a fantastic array of options this book evokes. You too will want to get out the fabric and start trialling different ways of producing Log Cabin blocks that enhance the fabrics chosen and excite the eye. The possibilities seem endless and will lead the Log Cabin enthusiast to new levels of decision making and creativity.
A challenge.......2005-09-24
This book has some very challenging techniques and quilts. The opportunity to be exceptionally creative is there if you wish or you can follow a pattern as shown and create a very personal quilt. I have really enjoyed reading through it and look forward to using it to create. It is not for the beginner nor for those who are afraid of color.
Log Cabin with a Twist.......2005-08-30
I purchased this book having seen Bonnie demonstrate the twisted log cabin and just fell in love with it. I have been searching for a log cabin pattern for quite sometime and just happened to tune into Simply Quilting show on tv and saw the different patterns that are displayed in this book. The colored photos and instructions are very easily understood. This is a must have book.
Book Description
This book not only includes the traditional Log Cabin block (in four sizes), but it takes the Log Cabin out of the past and into a new creative realm of innovative block design. Linda Causee has twisted the logs and changed the usual rectangular strip shape--making this the most exciting collection of Log Cabin blocks ever!

For the foundation paper-piecer.......2006-10-24
With full-sized paper piecing patterns, lots of log cabin designs, and color photographs of completed blocks, this book is perfect for those who like paper-piecing log cabin blocks. I haven't seen another book that fits all of these criteria.
out with traditional, in with variety.......2000-05-28
Quilting designs in a large variety of variations with some traditional ones included all with great color samples. Included with the full size templates are shaded greys of the pattern for ease in chosing your own masterpiece. Twisting and twirling the log shapes gives some spectacular results. An easy method for piecing tops it off. Now I have to decide which one to try first. The way it's layed out makes each block a very do-able project. Good for beginners as well as the pros.
Customer Reviews:
Nice designs, but watch out for errors!!!.......2007-09-12
Most of the designs in this book are quite beautiful. I decided to start with the Ladybug quilt, since it is really cute and of medium difficulty. I cut all the fabric first, per the directions. The first mistake is in Diagram 10 on page 25. Logs 5 and 6 are reversed, so I had to rip it out and re-sew.
The second problem is that the photograph of the quilt does not match the exploded view in Diagram 23, nor Diagram 24, or even the diagram on page 29. In fact, all four of these pictures are slightly different. Only diagram 24 matches the directions. The differences are above and to the right of the birdhouse.
The third problem was a major setback, since I had already cut the green for the "pieced border flowers" at 2-1/4" wide. The finished flowers that attach to the green strips have 1-3/4" squares for the centers. These finished center squares are about 1-3/4" on the diagonal, which is the same as the finished width of the green strips. Therefore, they will not be inset around the "petals" per the picture. I only discovered this AFTER I finished all the flowers, so I had to purchase more green fabric, and I'm planning to cut them into either 2-3/4 or 3 inch strips.
I'm still not done with this quilt, and I'm hesitant to start another one in this book with all of these setbacks!
Lovely.......2007-03-19
A fantastic book about Log Cabin, its contest lots of innspirations and has good instructions.Love it.

great classic pattern with a twist.......2005-08-26
I loved the book. what a nice twist to a classic pattern. great color photos too. = )
disappointed.......2005-08-19
I am very dissappointed in this book. Not what I had expected.
It should be called a paper piecing book for log cabins. Since I am not a fan of paper piecing I would have been more careful in my selection.

first rate resource.......2007-01-18
this is one of the best books on log cabin quilts i've seen--no, it doesn't have basic quilting instruction, but the subtitle says it all "the ultimate creative guide to the most popular and versatile pattern.'
every variation of the log cabin structure is explored (at least i can't think of any other shapes). from the familiar square and pineapple forms to hexagon and triangle and more, there are enough examples to inspire any quilter for years.
the photographed quilts are both authentic antiques and contemporary quilts. many of the 19th and early 20th century quilts look utterly modern.
there's a short but thorough section on the history of the log cabin quilt. then there are sections devoted to the various block shapes.
each of these sections has line drawings of the blocks, some tinted to show pattern. the final section has page on page of graphed alternate settings for the blocks. these are in shades of black and grey. any of these could be photocopied and colored.
i skipped the section dealing with sewing a block. i'm happy with paper piecing, and i don't mind dealing with a large quilt on my domestic machine (well, not enough to send it out to be quilted, anyway!), so i wasn't interested in the authors' suggestions. this book was originally published in great britain, and using fabric as a foundation for piecing is still popular there. the authors also included instructions for quilting as you go.
the reasons for four and not five stars: 1) no paper piecing templates. i know i can draw my own, but i'd rather spend the time and energy sewing. for the basic log cabin and pineapple variations, i can always search my other books or my magazines; for the trapazuid and pentagon and others, i'm on my own. and 2) not much attention is given to uneven log cabin/pineapple.
aside from those two minor drawbacks, this is a wonderful book, with years' worth of potential quilts.
very informative.......2006-07-03
No disappointment from this purchaser. I had heard about the book from a fellow quilter, and knew I had to have it for myself.
Not what I expected.......2005-05-27
More pictures than instructions. As a new quilter, I need more instruction than this book provides.

It works! You really can make a quilt in a weekend!.......1999-12-27
I bought this book 2 months ago. I work full time with 3 day weekends, and have made a baby quilt and a king size quilt in my free weekend time. That means, I didn't spend all my day's off sewing. I had a life as well. I am not a seamstress of any kind, just an average home-ec graduate. :-) The instructions are easy to understand and follow. You have a lot of latitude to make mistakes as well as creative changes and the quilts still turn out wonderful. People think I'm some kind of expert seamstress now. I tell them I just bought a "make a quilt in a weekend" book, and it worked!

Customer Reviews:
A New Look at Log Cabin Quilts by Flavin Glover.......2006-03-25
Log Cabin blocks are so versatile. This book introduces the reader to exciting ways of thinking outside the square. Production of animals, scenes and paletes of colour are examined and open the mind to so many possibilities. The block does not constrict you to sqaures, rather explores the sizes and shapes of the block, and the fabric strips along with the internal arrangement of colour to produce amazing effects. The magic of illusion and secondary patterns is evoked by the careful placement of blocks.
Creative and Beautiful.......2005-07-08
When my copy of this book became due again at the library, I had to go out and buy it. This book is beautiful and inspiring -- Glover takes a traditional quilting style and completely transforms it. The pictures are great, the background text is interesting, and the patterns are definitely executable (though they're low on details and expect quilting experience). One word of caution -- this is not an intro to quilting or to piecing Log Cabin squares or to color theory, though she is obviously masterful in all three. Use it as inspiration, not as a project blueprint, especially if you are new to quilting.

Book Description
This volume includes the first complete translation of a thirteenth-century vernacular history of Norway from the ninth to the twelfth centuries. An immediate source for the Heimskringla of Snorri Sturluson, it is a central text in the Old Norse genre of Kings' sagas. It includes extensive citation of skaldic verses, some of them preserved nowhere else. This translation preserves many of the metrical features of this complex verse form, which are explained in the commentary along with aspects of historical and cultural interest arising from the text. The introduction places the text within the Kings' saga tradition and examines the particular concerns of its anonymous author. The volume will be of use to historians and those interested in Old Norse literary history.
