No longer useful.......2007-09-23
This book may once have been useful, but we found it outdated to the point of uselessness. Some of the trails described no longer meaningfully existed as such, and one was a dirt road with a heavy 4wd traffic. After having been mislead one too many times, we abandoned this book completely and relied only on the trail descriptions in The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed (Ultimate Kauai Guidebook). That said, we looked to this book only for hikes, not beach walks and the like. It may be that it is a very competent guide for strolls. This book doesn't describe that many more hikes than the Ultimate Guidebook does, but the way some trails are broken into several hikes makes it seem at first glance that it does.
Kaua'i Trails.......2007-08-24
This was one of two books we used while hiking Kauai. The description of floral and birds one might see on certain trails was extremely good. Since we are birders this was very beneficial. Excellent text and very detailed.
Excellent trail book.......2007-01-10
I can't imagine the trip we took without this guide. It took us along trails that were stunning and amazingly little traveled. I felt like we saw the REAL Kauai. Surely it wasn't the hotels at the shore. Our only complaint is that some of the trails narrowed without warning at high altitudes and in places that seemed less than safe - especially along the Napoli coast. But all in all it made our trip the excellent journey that it was.
Inspiring - use supplemental trail maps for footpaths.......2007-01-06
Just returned from 6 days on Kauai, where we enjoyed a number of the shorter hikes using the 2002 edition. The author's fondness for Kauai really comes through in each hike's description. The ratings of length, elevation gain, and particularly of what kind of footwear is needed for each hike were invaluable -- we didn't have hiking boots and focused on the "tennis shoe" options. As the author recommends, DO get supplemental trail maps even for what you might *anticipate* will be a straightforward short hike - we relied on Kauai Trails in attempting to find the Berry Flat & Discovery Center trails in Kokee Park since it looked so simple, and ended up spending a panicked hour on trails through thick growth of strawberry guava trees as the sun was setting because trail names/signs had changed. (If you do attempt Trip 40 or 41, check with the Kokee Museum for a map. Trips like 9- Kuilau Ridge on old roads are indeed straightforward and also rewarding.) Another possible frustration is with the driving directions, which don't use the ubiquitous mileage signs: On Kauai many spots of tourist/hiker interest are not clearly marked and with the one-lane roads you may not have an immediate opportunity to turn around to access the pull-over, so do read driving instructions carefully before you set out and pull over whenever you think you might have found the spot. As previously noted, instructions to refer to a previous hike listing can be frustrating and it would be helpful if the exact break point into Hike A and Hike B were marked in the text and on the maps. I was also concerned by the reference to picking up (a few) shells on Anini Beach given that if everyone took shells off beaches there would be none left for others to see or for mollusks' homes.
Very Helpful.......2006-11-11
11-06 Just returned from Kauai traveling with an impaired walker.
The book was fabulous for planning side trips. Level of difficulty,
distance and even type of shoe required are all here. Good maps & info.
I can't wait to return with a fellow hiker to take advantage of all the
great trips and tips in this book.

Great reference for the serious gardener.......2007-09-24
Not full of flashy photos, so this won't be appealing to casual gardeners. If you have some education in botany and understand the taxonomy, this will be a reference book you will come back to time and again. Very comprehensive.
Book of the Century.......2005-08-20
I have just finished writing a review of this book for the West Hawaii Today newspaper. I've looked it over quite thoroughly. It's flawless! And I'm a very picky reviewer. It will be the authoritative classic for many years to come, and I predict it will garner some horticultural book awards during the coming year. The binding is real cloth, a rariety these days. Bishop Museum has produced a deluxe book. I know tropical horticulture books well and review them on my website.

Book Description
A user-friendly guide to public gardens and parks on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.
Book Description
Louise Eldridge is taking her public television garden show on the road--to Hawaii! But the tropical paradise isn't so idyllic once murder makes an unexpected appearance...
Lush with hibiscus, ficus, plumeria, and monkeypod trees, the island of Kauai is the perfect place for Louise to film a few episodes of Gardening with Nature.
After their shoot at the National Tropical Botanical Garden, Louise unwinds with a sunset walk on the beach. But at the base of a cliff, she makes a grisly discovery: the battered body of Matthew Flynn, a noted botanist. Her attempts to save his life are fruitless, and--after seeing his injuries firsthand--Louise is convinced that his death was no accident.
Now it'll take some serious digging for Louise to unearth more clues, but she'll have to be very careful, because this is one killer who is ready to plant her in the ground...
"Neatly plotted...Ripley's green thumb fans will relish the paradise island setting and Louise's reliable sleuthing." --Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Great story, great setting.......2007-04-02
This is the first book I've read in this series, and it was terrific. The author does an amazing job with the setting, particularly the trip to the volcano. The plant information is interesting and so is the debate in the storyline about searching out new plants for different possible commercial applications. I liked the main character (though I personally didn't think much of her husband!) and was surprised at the solution. Will definitely look to read more by this author.
botany version of Ten Little Indians.......2006-11-06
Louise Eldridge is euphoric as she takes her DC based PBS show, Gardening with Nature, to the Hawaiian island of Kauai for a special shoot at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Louise has scheduled a panel of expert guests to discuss horticulture. However, she finds the egomaniacal quartet (nursery owner Dr. Bruce Bouting, ethnobiologist Dr. Matthew Flynn, environmentalist Dr. Charles Reuter and Pacific Island expert Dr. Tom Schoonover) so obnoxious she looks forward to leaving paradise for home.
While strolling on the nearby beach, Louise finds the battered body of Dr. Flynn that she quickly concludes was a homicide. Police Chief Randy Hau leads the official investigation, but a second homicide occurs. Unable to heed her spouse's warning to stay out of the dangerous water, the plant lady begins an inquiry as she seeks the root cause of this homicide.
The Gardening Mystery (see SUMMER GARDEN MURDER) crowd will enjoy the change of milieu because Louise feels a need to uncover the botany version of Ten Little Indians. The whodunit is fun to follow as Chief Hau and amateur sleuth Louise separately work the case. Fans of the series will root for the plant lady as Ann Ripley provides a fun tropical cozy.

Good but not top-notch.......2003-07-03
This map will give you a good overview of the island. But there are better, more detailed maps available. Try the surt shops around Poipu and you'll find a wide variety of maps, some comical, some with enough quality to frame.

These three new volumes complete our survey of American gardens; together, the four books feature over 500 public gardens across the country. Book Description
A Native Hawaiian Garden has much to offer professional horticulturists, landscapers, and botanists, and gives reason to hope that more spaces around housing developments, shopping malls, and other commercial buildings will soon include native Hawaiian plants. But the book will prove especially valuable to those gardeners who wish to grow and nuttier something truly Hawaiian in their own backyards. Among the many rewards of growing natives, the authors make clear, is the opportunity to contribute your own experiences and findings to a vital preservation effort.
Customer Reviews:
Good, I guess.......2005-09-01
I guess the book is good. Bought it for a college class but ended up dropping class so I never read it.
A Native Hawaiian Garden: How to Grow and Care for Island Pl.......2000-03-25
This was an excellent book. It really showed people how to germinate, grow, and care for the native plants of Hawaii. After two centuries of gardens being full of exotics that escape and take over the native forests, it's time to start bringing the natives back into the cities. This book really shows how to do this in a quick and easy way.
Book Description
This study provides the first full discussion of Philoponus' excursus on matter in contra Proclum XI. 1-8 which sets out the innovative definition of prime matter as three-dimensional extension. The author argues that Philoponus' definition was motivated primarily by philosophical problems in Neoplatonism. Philoponus employs the explanation of growth, the interpretation of Aristotle's category theory and the notions of formlessness and potentiality to substantiate his definition. To conclude, the book offers an assessment of the significance of Philoponus' innovation. It is demonstrated for the first time that Plotinus' view of matter exerted considerable influence on both Philoponus and Simplicius. Moreover, the structure of Syrianus' and Proclus' metaphysics prepared the way for Philoponus' account of prime matter.
